Roland TB-303 Added to Roland Cloud
"Continuing the Legacy
Roland Cloud is pleased to announce the addition of the Roland TB-303 to our suite of software instruments. Utilizing the same ACB (Analog Circuit Behavior) modeling as the Roland JUNO-106, JUPITER-8, and others from our Legendary series, the virtual TB-303 captures the hypnotic tone of the original hardware and forms the perfect complement to the TR-909 and other instruments in Roland Cloud.

Din Sync to Release RE-303 - New Roland TB-303 Clone PCBs
RE-303 - its not a clone, its a replica
Published on Oct 28, 2015 phono1337
"more info at http://www.re-303.com http://www.dinsync.info"
It looks like Din Sync is coming out with a new DIY"replica" clone of the TB-303. There have been plenty of emulations of the 303, but only a handful of actual clones. There was the x0xb0x was based on the schematics of the original 303, Cyclone Analogic's TT-303, and most recently Abstrakt Instruments Avalon Bassline Synthesizer which I've been told has circuit boards that can be swapped into an original TB-303.
The FAQ via http://www.re-303.com:
"Ok ill start with a few obvious questions, feel free to ask more and I'll try to answer them for you.
Q: What is the RE-303?
A: the RE-303 is a replica of the Roland TB-303 motherboard and switchboard
Q: Why do we need yet another 303 knockoff?
A: There have been many clones, I honestly wanted to make a genuine replica. Now the dead TB-303's with broken motherboards can come back to life and new TB-303s can be born.
Q: Hasn't this been done already?
A: Actually no, not in the purest form. We've had the x0xb0x which sounded very close but didn't look the part. We've had the TT-303 which looks that part but is not a genuine replica of the original hardware. The RE-303 circuit boards have been made by dissecting a mint condition pristine TB-303 and manually recreating the board in CAD from the hardware rather than the service schematics. Every nuance and mistake in the hardware not in the service notes is recreated in the RE-303. It really is for all intents and purposes a TB-303. [Note: I was told the Abstrakt Instruments Avalon Bassline Synthesizer boards can be swapped]
Q: When can I get one?
A: As soon as they are ready, just post on the waiting list thread. By the nature of this project It's likely to be limited, so first come first served.
Q: What about kits?
A: This is likely to never happen sorry, this project is probably going to be the most hardcore DIY many have tried. But it will be worth the effort!
Q: What about rare parts, the VCA and CPU, memory chips, switches pots etc etc.
A: There currently exists many solutions for these today and I'm actively working on some as part of the project.
Q: How long will this all take?
A: How long is a piece of string?"

TT-303 clone vs. real TB-303 & First Impressions by Computer Controlled
Top demo is the TB-303. Bottom is the TT-303 vs. TB-303. Pay attention to the accents.
"first 16 bars of TT-303 clone. after that 16 bars of TB-303.
after that 16 bars of BOTH playing at the SAME time paned L/R .
after that it's TT-303 and TB-303 back and forth to show the difference in sound.
i matched the settings and turned only cut off & resonance in exactly the same way on both machines. the pattern is programmed same way on both machines.
NO EFX is used, no comp, no eq, no reverb, no distortion.
just pure sound directly in the line in of the a2d."
There's some discussion on the AH that the accent between the two is slightly different. If you listen to 3:24 on you'll hear that the TT-303 doesn't quiet get that classic TB-303 quick accented filter sweep. Could be the settings? If anyone has a TT-303 and get that sound feel free to comment. I'll follow-up with a new post if I hear anything.
And some first impressions by Computer Controlled:
"Just got my TT-303 earlier this afternoon. After a few hours of playing with it, here are my observations.
Build Quality:
Its made of lighter weight plastic than the TB is. So it feels slightly cheaper. With batteries in it, it's lighter than the TB.
It has a glossy finish, as opposed to the TB's matte finish. I like the matte finish much better.
The switches have almost no throw to them. This takes a bit of getting used to.
The knobs do rub against the case, but this doesn't bother me at all.

Cognition 303: Bassline Deviations by Various Artists Celebrating the 40-Year History of the TB-303
Also on https://www.clananalogue.org/ where you'll find the release on other platforms including Spotify, Deezer, and Apple Music. Note this release features supporting members of the site!
"Cognition 303: Bassline Deviations celebrates the 40-year history of the TB-303, its status as the last great iconic instrument of electronic music, and explorations of its newest sonic manifestations. The TB-303 has become one of the most used, modified and cloned instruments in electronic music. For Cognition 303 Clan Analogue artists from across Australia heeded the call to create a new selection of sounds exploring all versions of this instrument and its expanding musical lineage.
The Roland TB-303 Bass Line machine was a discarded device of the 1980s, forgotten as shiny digital synths became the industry standard of polished pop and stadium rock. However a new generation in the late 80s and early 90s reclaimed these analogue relics from pawn shops and Trading Post adverts, inspired by the new sounds of techno, house and electronic experimentalism. These young artists became the flagbearers for new musical movements which swept through the 1990s. From this era Clan Analogue was born, Australia’s longest-running and most influential electronic music collective, now celebrating 30 years of underground electronic music activity.
Cognition 303 spans the styles associated with the TB-303 and pushes them into new and unexpected directions. Techno superstar Honeysmack collaborates with T-Rek for one of his famed acid techno bangers. Australian dance music pioneer Andy Rantzen teams up with fellow 303 lover Ryan Spinoglio to give us a stripped-back funk exploration using four TB-303s. Composite Cone and Klaps celebrate the famed Robin Whittle 303 Devilfish modification. Vision Four 5 produce an anthemic piece of stadium techno while KOshowKO channels the legendary Charanjit Singh by blending the 303 with non-Western instruments. Suspect and Factorypreset, two halves of the seminal Dark Network, each create a piece of hypnotic ambient acid house groove - just some of the squelchy masterpieces on Cognition 303.
Download Cognition 303 from Bandcamp for a bonus collection of 14 more Australian 303 tracks from Clan Analogue’s artists, including Bleepin' J Squawkins, Ming One and dyLAB.

TT-303 Bass Bot Comparison to Original TB-303 by Devil Fish's Robin Whittle
The following is via Robin Whittle, creator of the renown Devil Fish mods for the original TB-303. Robin plans to make the Devil Fish Mods available for the TT-303 Bass Bot as well.
"I have done a preliminary circuit tracing of most of the Bass Bot and compared its function and signals with those of the TB-303.
The Bass Bot is not claimed to be a replica of the TB-303 - it just looks that way. Please note that what I wrote relates to a single machine from the December production batch. There is a new batch just about to be made and I understand that there are some hardware and firmware changes - but I don't know what they are. What I wrote here may be updated in the future, may not be complete or accurate, and may not reflect the behavior of all Bass Bots: http://www.firstpr.com.au/rwi/dfish/TT-303/#diffs (Update: see the link for additional assessments added after this post)
The Bass Bot does everything a TB-303 does except:
It does not receive Roland/DIN Sync.
Although the right-most button is labeled "Tap" as part of replicating the design of the TB-303's front panel, there is no Tap entry mode in the TT-303's sequencer.
The synthesiser circuitry is functionally identical to that of a TB-303 except (based on our experience with one unit sent to us in December 2012):
Maximum Env Mod is about 37% stronger.
Accent Sweep via the Resonance Pot is about 33% stronger.
The VCA is a BA6110, which is a modern, enhanced, version of the original and now unobtainable BA662. The BA6110 has linearizing diodes, which are not used, so it behaves much like a BA662. The control current to the VCA is approximately doubled and the load resistor for the VCA is approximately halved. The signal level is about the same, but these changes reduce the VCA's background noise significantly.
The CV Out range is 1.333 volts for lowest C to 5.333 volts for the highest C in a Pattern's 3 octave range, when the Pattern is transposed up 1 octave. In the TB-303, this 4 octave range is 1.0 to 5.0 volts.
The exact response curve of the Resonance Pot is a 'log' curve at both the anti-clockwise and the clockwise ends. This is the same as with the replacement Resonance pots we have been installing in the Devil Fish for several years. The TB-303's Resonance pot has a "log" (AKA "audio taper") response curve. This difference only affects what knob position produces a given sound, not the range of sounds which are available.
The circuitry is in general identical - except of course that different transistor and IC types are used. I didn't find any evidence that these differences result in a different sound.
I will await a machine from the new production batch before I do the detailed work for the forthcoming Devil Fish modifications. Although the modifications will be identical or similar in principle to those for the TB-303, the new machine has totally different component numbering, different layout, and almost all the components are surface mount. It will be a while before I finalize the modifications.
I have added the Swedish distributor Jam.se to the above page."

Update: some pics and the official press release:
"Dallas, TX, April 04, 2012 - After months of testing and development, Social Entropy is releasing the Quicksilver 303 CPU Upgrade. Quicksilver 303 is a complete replacement CPU for the classic TB-303 BassLine Synthesizer. It uses a completely rewritten operating system that enhances and extends both pattern and track modes. All operations can be carried out while the sequencer continues playback. We have strived to maintain the classic feel of the sequencer, while removing the frustration.

Many features have been added to the operating system, with a focus on realtime performance and tweaking.
The sequencer engine supports standard step entry in pitch and time modes, while a new realtime record capability allows patterns to be entered live with the 303 keyboard or a MIDI controller. Editing of pattern information is now simple, with the ability to move forwards and backwards within a sequence while the pattern continues playback. A new chase LED makes it easy to visualize the location of notes in the pattern.
Functions like copy and paste, randomize, extend, rotate and reverse can be applied to pitch or time information independently. Patterns can be transposed in octaves or semitones in both pattern write and play modes. The transpose amount is stored with each pattern.
In pattern play mode, up to eight patterns can be chained for playback. A pattern restart and clock resync function makes sure that the music never stops during live performance!
The extended track mode allows for complete songs to be constructed using patterns. Each track step has settings for pattern transposition, multiple repeats or pattern chains.
Changing between modes can be performed without stopping the sequencer and all data is stored in EEPROM memory, eliminating the need for batteries.
Enhanced MIDI connectivity provides synchronization, sequencer input and output, as well as a new "MIDI Control Mode" which allows the buttons of the TB-303 to be controlled remotely by any device that can send MIDI note messages. Full MIDI System Exclusive support means that pattern and track data to be dumped to external devices for backup or sharing.
USB connectivity is used for easy operating system upgrades.
The Quicksilver 303 is available for immediate purchase. Price for the base CPU is $275 USD, with free installation for a limited time.

Roland TB-3 Article in Forbes Featuring Ladyada (x0xb0x), Klaus Suessmuth (acidlab), & Mr. Lee (TT-303)
Jasper Hamill wrote in to let us know he published an article on the new TB-3 for Forbes online here. The article features comments from x0xb0x's Ladyada, acidlab's Klaus Suessmuth, and the first interview ever with Cyclone Analogic's Mr Lee. Roland believes they captured the essence of the TB-303. From Brandon Ryan, AIRA group strategy manager for Roland Corporation, in the article:
“'We deeply analyzed what makes a 303 a 303,' Ryan told me. 'We consulted with the original engineers, studied original schematics and constantly compared the TB-3 to our own original TB-303 units. And we think we’ve improved upon the original in some ways. Even with its modern touches, it’s just got that 303 thing – and that’s really what matters at the end of the day.'"
Interface aside, there is one other thing to consider in addition to the raw sound of the TB-303. There's also the behavior and character of the 303 driven by it's sequencer. One characteristic that made the 303 shine in my opinion was the accent and glide or slide. The 303 is capable of an almost rubber band like action when it comes to the glide between notes. You can hear it come in at :57 in this video. I have yet to hear it on the TB-3 or confirmation that it can cover it. Informally I have heard that it can't, but I haven't given up hope. Not sure how the other clones compare. No other synth I'm aware of can do it quite like the 303. If you have an opinion feel free to comment.
It's worth noting the TB-3 is not the first 303 inspired synth from Roland. Prior to the TB-3, Roland also came out with the MC-303 and the MC-09 PhraseLab which many consider a great little box at reproducing the TB-303 sound. Not sure how it did with that slide though.
You'll find the full article by Jasper Hamill on Forbes here.

Almost identical to a vintage 303 except it has presets and
midi in/out.,
CV/gate out seems identical to a vintage 303 as does programming.
Unlike all those other 303 clones out there this one could easily be mistaken for an original.
... at least in its external appearance.
more audio demos coming ...
I'll do a direct audio comparison with a real 303 soon.
Tune is Alesso's Years..... sequenced in Abelton."

"A quick 3rd demo of the TT303 by Cyclone Analogic.
This video covers traditional programming and play. No midi or external sequencers used this time.
If you're familiar with writing a melody on a Roland TB303 you'll probably see that the procedure is identical.
The first part of the video is standard "Pattern Play".
Then we switch to "write/pattern mode"
Here is where we write our tune.
First we need to erase our previous pattern.
Then set the number of steps (in this example its 12) .. Max of 16.
Hit pitch mode.
Write the melody.
Then into "time mode" to tell the sequencer how many notes to play.
Hit "run" to play the tune :-)
This melody is kinda boring :-( .... lets spice it up with some accents, slides or transpose up/down.
Just like the good old days.:-)"

"Basic demo of the Dtronics DT-303 Distortion for the TB-303 / RE-303 / XoXbox"
DT 303 vs Dinsync RE 303
"The Dtronics DT-303 is a distortion that fits perfect with a Roland TB-303 or clone. Giving it unique sound to your acid music.
he Dtronics DT-303 is not your ordinary distortion, It is not a clone or copy.
It gives you 3 blends that you can adjust and filter. Each of the 3 settings have minor changes in the frequency spectrum. The distortion knop allows you to spice things up from minor to overrated distortion. Use the filter knob to suppress those high frequencies. A volume knob is added to adjust the output level to your needs. A bypass knop allows you to switch back to the original sound quickly.
The DT-303 was designed to fit perfect next to your TB-303 or RE-303. With the connections at the back you will have no spaghetti wires hanging over your gear."

"The Roland TB-303 Bass Line is a synthesizer with built-in sequencer manufactured by the Roland corporation in 1982 and 1983 that had a defining role in the development of contemporary electronic music. The TB-303 (named for "Transistor Bass") was originally marketed to guitarists for bass accompaniment while practicing alone. Production lasted approximately 18 months, resulting in only 10,000 units. It was not until the mid- to late-1980s that DJs and electronic musicians in Chicago found a use for the machine in the context of the newly developing house music genre. At the time they were very cheap, which helped to contribute to their popularity. The TB-303 is considered a collector's item today, often valued at US $1000 to $3000. An example recently sold on eBay for US $2,275.00. Phuture's "Acid Tracks" is widely acknowledged to have been the first Acid House recording to incorporate prototypical TB-303 sounds. Earlier recordings featuring the TB-303 can be traced back as far as the early Electro scene, including artists such as Ice T, Newcleus, and Mantronix, as well as pop musicians such as Heaven 17 and Section 25. In the early 90's, as new Acid styles emerged, the 303 was often overdriven, producing a harsher sound. Examples of this technique include Hardfloor's 1992 EP "Acperience", and Interlect 3000's 1993 EP "Volcano". The well-known "acid" sound is typically produced by playing a repeating note pattern on the TB-303, while altering the filter's cutoff frequency, resonance, and envelope modulation. The TB-303's accent control modifies a note's volume, filter resonance, and envelope modulation, allowing further variations in timbre. A distortion effect, either by using a guitar effects pedal or overdriving the input of an audio mixer, is commonly used to give the TB-303 a denser, noisier timbre--as the resulting sound is much richer in harmonics. The head designer of the TB-303, Tadao Kikumoto, was also responsible for leading design of the TR-909 drum machine." Be sure to check out the seller's other items. Quite the list there.

ROLAND TB-303 ACID BASSLINE SYNTHESIZER WITH QUICKSILVER CPU SN 164000
Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction
"This sticking point in this new age with the 303’s was attempting to slave or incorporate into your modern set up without the DIN function....in step the reputable QUICKSILVER CPU!!!
USB connection to slave with your chosen DAW giving you the full sync and editing ability from your PC or MAC whilst retaining full hands on control.
As usual has some minor mark on the casing as seen on the pictures but the face is clean with no pot fading, and printed letters clearly visible and legible.
Comes with a non original power adapter and Roland carry case...
The Quicksilver 303 is a replacement CPU for the TB-303 Bass Synthesizer. With a completely rewritten operating system, all of the creative obstacles to programming amazing sequences have been removed. The experience still remains uniquely “303”.
The Quicksilver 303 CPU can be used with or without MIDI. So, you can still benefit from the new features of the CPU without drilling any holes in your TB-303!
Of course, there are also great new MIDI capabilities. MIDI control over filter cutoff, “MIDI Control mode” which allows the 303 to be “remotely controlled” from any device that can send MIDI note messages. The sequencer can send and receive MIDI notes and MIDI clock and you can also record incoming MIDI to patterns in realtime.
All functions of the Quicksilver 303 are available while the sequencer is running, this includes programming patterns, changing modes and new live performance functions like “ALL ACCENT” “CHOP” and “BUMP”.
Entering new patterns is now interactive, with the capability to hear changes as the pattern plays, and the ability to move forwards and backwards to edit specific notes.
The Quicksilver 303 is equipped with USB connectivity for OS upgrades and USB MIDI. Allowing the Quicksilver 303 to be directly connected to a USB host!
Because all data is stored into internal EEPROM, batteries are no longer required to maintain memory. All internal memory can also be dumped using MIDI sysex messages for sharing or backup."

Cyclone Analogic Bass Bot TT-303 Hardware TB-303 Clone Released
Update 11/28: Update on the price:
UK: £449.00 + VAT
EU: €549.00 + VAT
US: $699.99 + VAT
Update: additional pics & PDF via Lorne/kidtronic via Rhythm Active.
Remember the Bass Bot TT-303 demo videos posted here back on October 18? Well, it is currently available as of today, and it is the first product from a new company named Cyclone Analogic based in Hong Kong (possible sites not yet live: http://www.cyclone-analogic.com | http://www.tt-303.com). You will find full details on the TT-303 further below.
Before we get to that, Robin Whittle, who brought us the Devilfish Mods for the original TB-303, will be performing them for the TT-303 as well. You can find details on his page here.
Lorne aka kidtronic wrote in to let us know Rhythm Active in Australia, one of our sponsors, currently has the TT-303 available. I also hear Syntaur in the US has them for The following details are via Superior Sound London, who currently shows them as being sold out in the UK:
"The Bass Bot TT 303 electronic bass synth features a selectable monophonic analog VCO processed through a 4 pole analog cascading filter. It uses 21st-century transistor technology to synthesize tones from super-crisp self-resonating leads to squelchy rhythms and deep subharmonic bass grooves.
Creating music as simple or complex as you want with the Bass Bot is a breeze. Its ground-breaking InstaDJ OS is an artificially intelligent sequencer and can be programmed in two methods: by a human user or by the computer-controlled Bass Bot.Humans may program musical patterns manually using traditional step entry with control over pitch, time, length and special characteristics such as octave transpose, accent and slide for each note.
Alternatively let the Bot generate a pattern and use it immediately, tweak it to taste, or mutate it into a new pattern altogether at the touch of a button. The Bass Bot TT 303 includes seven different ‘personalities’ each of which generates its own special style of musical patterns. No two Bots will produce the same patterns. Each is as individual as the user, though the basic personalities are the same for every Bass Bot.
The Bass Bot TT 303 features seven unique preset personality programs, capable to generate up to 224 computer generated presets by the Bass Bot ™.
An additional 224 Editable Patterns can compose up to 7 songs of up to 127 bars. All information is saved to onboard flash (permanent) memory and transferable directly to other Bass Bots via 8 Pin DIN cable (cloning) or to PC / MAC (backup) for storage with a downloadable transfer application available on our website. Other platforms to be supported soon.

Roland TB-303 Modded

images via this auction
"modified with FiveG which adds CV/Gate/Slide/VCF/ACC inputs for full control (and more) over every aspect of the machine from a MIDI sequencer via any CV/GATE converter or analog sequencer. The filter input allows you to program the filter amount from a sequencer or CV source (pedal, etc.), which is not possible using the internal sequencer.
The TB-303 is THE sound of acid and techno house music! It's a monophonic analog bass synthesizer married to a pattern-based step sequencer released in 1982. It features a single analog oscillator with two waveforms (ramp or square) and has a simple but excellent VCF filter with resonance, cut-off, and envelope controls. There are also knobs to adjust tuning, envelope decay, tempo and accent amount. How does it work? Well, it's not a performance synthesizer because you have to program a pattern of notes and timing info into it (sort of like a drum machine). Patterns can then be linked into songs. It was originally made to accompany a drum machine, the TR-606 specifically, and provide bass-line accompaniment to guitarists, keyboard players, etc. It was not a successful product in its time. As a result, creative DJs and aspiring electronic musicians found them for next to no money and began using them for techno and acid music. Usually a single pattern is continuously played while the performer tweaks the knobs creating an exciting and expressive musical event.
The TB-303 has become one of the most sought after vintage synths ever! It has helped develop and stylize many forms of electronic music including House, Acid, Trance and Ambient. If ever there was a need for a repetitive bassline/groove or an extremely resonant and bubbly sound, the 303 is KING. Truly a unique machine with a very identifiable sound! It has spun off several imitators as well: Novation BassStation, ReBirth, Doepfer MS-404, MAM MB-33, Syntecno TeeBee, and more (see Related & Alternative Gear sidebar).
Ironically, these days it's become trendy to dislike the 303 again, now because of over-use. But I don't and you shouldn't either because it is one-of-a-kind and it's just got that sound that everyone loves!
Getting creative with the 303 always leads to great sounds! Add a guitar distortion pedal for instant hard-core acid and techno. Use the CV and Gate outputs to control other old synthesizers and get that elastic 303 groove workin' your other synths (especially cool with a polyphonic synth).
There are some custom modifications for the TB-303 which are definitely worth mentioning here. Get all the acid you can squeeze out of your TB-303 with the modification, designed to enhance and extend the range of the 303's filters and sound."
