And the description from the UK store (not seeing MIDI support):

"The iOS version of the world-renowned TENORI-ON brings you a completely new musical interface. Even if you don't know much about music, you can create music intuitively as if you were arranging sounds in space. The music that you see on the 16 × 16 grid of buttons is the music that is performed.

On the 16 × 16 grid of buttons, basically, the horizontal direction is time, and the vertical direction is pitch.By laying sounds on these buttons, you can combine rhythms and melodies to produce music. A button will glow when its sound is produced. The movements of the glowing lights produce a visual performance.

TNR-i can produce 16 types of sounds at the same time (16 layers), and it can remember up to 16 song patterns produced using those sounds (16 blocks). By switching between song patterns in real time, you can produce a rich variety of musical expressions.

There are six different types of performance modes that you can select for each layer. You can make elaborate music by combining different modes. In score mode, the most fundamental of the modes, you can arrange sounds horizontally (temporally) and vertically (by pitch). In the exciting random mode, the sounds that you arrange are not just played in order—the melody and rhythm constantly change as twists are added. In draw mode, you can perform music by tracing your finger across the buttons as if drawing a picture. In bounce mode, the glowing lights are like bouncing balls that produce sound when they fall. In push mode, you can continuously change the sound as you perform. In solo mode, which is fun for solo performances, you can easily adjust the speed of repetition and the pitch.

First, please try the demo. You can experience the joy of performance just by switching layers.
- Loading the Demo: From the menu (touch the display), touch File menu, touch All Blocks, iD-Xtra_uncTK, and then Load.
- Switching layers: Press R5 and the area that the 16 × 16 buttons are in at the same time. (You can double-tap R5 to hold it and make it easier to switch layers.)

The appeal of TNR-i isn't just limited to its faithful duplication of the TENORI-ON concept and its design and interface, which were developed under the supervision of Toshio Iwai.
If you are connected to a network, you can participate in TNR-i sessions with distant friends and others. Up to four people can connect to each other over a network and enjoy performing together at the same time. First, tap Clear and the display at the same time to activate the Game Center feature. Then, invite your friends, or use the auto-match feature to automatically select a partner, and start your session. For more details, see page 23 of the internal manual.
Manual: From the menu (touch the display), touch System Menu and then Manual.

If you update the TENORI-ON (TNR-W or TNR-O) to version 2.1 and use it with TNR-i, you can participate in sessions using the TENORI-ON (TNR-W or TNR-O).
For details, see the TENORI-ON webpage at http://www.global.yamaha.com/tenori-on/.

The preset sounds of TNR-i are the same as those of the TENORI-ON, and the performance files are also compatible. You can use iTunes to transfer performance files saved on your TENORI-ON SD card to TNR-i. Of course, the reverse is also possible.

Please enjoy the world of TENORI-ON.

Notes
*You must have an Internet connection to participate in a network session. You also have to sign in to the Game Center.
*User Voice is not available.
*To run TNR-i smoothly, we recommend that you use an iPhone 4 or later or an iPod touch, 4th generation or later.

NAMM: Update to Yamaha Tenori-On Firmware

Not sure if this one actually is NAMM, but I haven't posted the details so here they are. Previous post mentioning an update was coming posted back on Nov 5 here.

"Content of Update
1 - Tighter operation
Through internal software refinements the Yamaha engineers have successfully improved the overall processing performance, giving the Tenori-On player the experience of a ‘tighter’ and more instantaneous real-time performance instrument.
2 - Improved MIDI sync
A high percentage of Tenori-On owners use their instrument in conjunction with a computer-based DAW. This combination gives maximum sonic versatility. The new Version 2.0 firmware now responds to the F2 MIDI Song Position Pointer message allowing it to be seamlessly integrated into all popular DAW systems.
3 - Global Mute
Its now simple to Globally Mute the Tenori-On audio output for all tracks by using R4 and L1 top panel buttons. This allows performers, especially when using the Tenori-On with a DAW, to create dramatic mutes (and unmutes) via shortcut keys, without having to enter the deeper menu architecture of the Tenori-On.
4 - Reset Loop Timing
When changing loop speeds and accessing the unique Tenori-On layer loop points, its possible to have different tracks running out of sync with each other. This can create a unique musical feel however, at some musical moment, its good to be able to reset all loop points. In the original Tenori-On firmware this feature was buried deep within the menu structures however, with Version 2.0, this is now available from the top panel buttons. Simply by hitting the combination of L4 and R1 all tracks will reset to their original loop timing points.
5 - User Scale
A feature that has been highly requested by the Tenori-On enthusiasts is the ability to expand and edit the instruments global note scaling. Rather than being confined to a range of 16 consecutive notes per layer, its now possible to create a global ‘User Scale’ allowing different notes from different octaves to be accessed and sequenced within one single layer. This new function will open up many new musical dimensions for the Tenori-On player as any note can now be assigned to a layer.
6 - Swing
With a new ‘Swing’ function implemented in Version 2.0 its now possible to give the entire instrument a new level of musical ‘feel’. With a -23/+23 swing parameter its also possible to fine tune this ‘feel’ using the jog wheel in real-time. The new Swing feature is especially creative when Slaved to an external DAW as it allows the Tenori-On to swing while the DAW remains rigid."

Tenori-On: Original double-sided, white LED design

via this auction

"This is an Original Tenori-On, with double-sided white LED screens and superior-quality magnesium alloy body construction. The newer version of the instrument is single-sided with orange LEDs and a plastic body...

About the Tenori-On

Media artist Toshio Iwai and Yamaha have collaborated to design a new digital musical instrument for the 21st century, TENORI-ON. A 16x16 matrix of LED switches allows everyone to play music intuitively, creating a "visible music" interface.

The TENORI-ON 16 x 16 LED button matrix is simultaneously a performance input controller and display. By operating and interacting with the LED buttons and the light they produce you gain access to the TENORI-ON's numerous performance capabilities.

The TENORI-ON provides six different performance and sound/light modes for broad performance versatility, and these modes can be combined and used simultaneously for rich, complex musical expression.

Tenori-on Meets Kyma

Tenori-on Meets Kyma from Nomad Cinema on Vimeo.
"In order to tap the real power of Yamaha's new Tenori-on, it helps to pair it with external equipment capable of producing more satisfying sounds than the somewhat lackluster soundset included with the Tenori-on itself. In this video, no internal Tenori-on sounds were used whatsoever. Tenori-on is functioning purely as a sequencer with external equipment, including advanced sound-shaping from Kyma and analog synthesis from Alesis Andromeda and Dave Smith's Prophet '08. Sequencer data coming from Tenori-on is processed in Ableton Live (utilizing midi scale and chord filters, as well as injecting some generative randomness) before reaching Kyma, Andromeda, and Prophet '08."

Update via BirdFLU in the comments:
"At the very bottom of the specs page is the real news:

'To coincide with the unveiling of the new model Yamaha have also confirmed a free forthcoming firmware update for current TENORI-ON customers. Following a range of user comments Yamaha are currently in the process of creating a new operating system which is expected to be available from January 2010.The update will address a number of areas including the synching of TENORI-ON to external DAW applications and offer an improved MIDI sync implementation.'"

Tenori-On iPad MIDI Output & Sync Demo

YouTube Published on Mar 9, 2012 by flx04
Part one below.

"This video tutorial shows off some of the MIDI output functionality of Yamaha's Tenori-On (TNR-i) iOS App.

You can use the Tenori-On App to sequence external hardware and software, like synthesizers or DAWs. I'm showing a MFB Nanozwerg, a MFB 522 Drum Machine and a MicroKorg in this video, as well as Ableton Live. Each Tenori-On layer corresponds to a MIDI channel, so you could output up to 16 different sequences at the same time. Apart form regular step-sequencer score layers, there are also random layers, bounce layers and more, to mix your sequences up a bit.

I'm using the Apple Camera Connection Kit and a USB-to-MIDI Cable to connect the iPad to Ableton Live. Other DAWs and CoreMIDI compatible interfaces like the Alesis I/O Dock, Line6 MIDI-Mobilizer II or the iRig MIDI should work as well.

The iPad 1 in this video runs iOS 5.0.1.
