In Conversation: Tony Rolando and Alessandro Cortini Discuss Bruxa's Development | Make Noise

video upload by MAKEN0ISE

"We were fortunate to be joined by our friend Alessandro Cortini here in Asheville recently. He and Tony Rolando met up at Drop of Sun Studios to discuss the development process of their latest collaboration: Bruxa.

Bruxa is a new evolution of Tony and Alessandro’s original prototype circuits which eventually became the Strega’s Time/Filter Experiment. In this freewheeling conversation, Tony and Alessandro discuss everything from the initial concept designs from which both Strega and Bruxa were born, Alessandro's recent series of concerts (wherein he improvises on a pair of Stregas and a pair of 0-CTRLs), the 'Scared System' and more!

Bruxa is a special release that will be available by pre-order only. Orders will be shipping out to dealers this October. Contact your favorite Eurorack dealer for details and availability.

Thanks again to Drop of Sun for hosting us!!

We all love Alessandro Cortini - but Strega not so much?

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"I've always been in a 'love / hate' relationship with Strega, where 'hate' is a figure of speech because I am actively working on not hating anything or anybody. Regardless, Strega is in my top 10 of all time favorite modules. With the announcement of Bruxa I noticed a lof of comments about Bruxa being just as mono as the Witch, and a more interesting call for help where Strega users just don't come anywhere Cortini's work - and some blame Strega for it (don't).

In this short 'essay', I checked out all videos I could find where Cortini does a Strega demo and found only one at Reverb.com. It's fascinating to see he ALWAYS uses the external input on three application examples.

Using Mr. Spock's logic I can safely speculate it's primarily designed as an FX processor. Sure I knew this, but I didn't get it. Sure there's a VCO, but Alessandro is using it to support whatever's coming in to create low drones, textures and fat saturated atmospheres. So I tried to plug in my guitar and noodled a bit with this new workflow in mind. If you don't have a guitar, try to get a kalimba in. You'll notice there's an abundance of FM paths you can use to influence the VCO and the Time/Filter/Delay/Feedback.

This video is not intended to change your mind about Strega. If you don't like it, that's perfectly OK. But if Cortini's work is part of the music you love most, it's a very convenient and easy way to get you in his 'zone'. He is definitely in there somewhere. And the ugly witch can be a beauty.

New Module from Make Noise: Bruxa!

video upload by MAKEN0ISE

"The Bruxa music synthesizer module is an audio alchemical experiment. Spill your sound into time, and let it decay through the filters to hear the results.

Bruxa is a collaboration between Make Noise and Alessandro Cortini. Inspired by Cortini’s music and sonic experimentations, Bruxa embodies the seen and unseen, the sign and magic, the alchemy of sound. It is a new evolution of Tony and Alessandro’s original prototype circuits which eventually became the Strega’s Time/Filter Experiment. It is a multi-tap delay line with over a dozen unique feedback paths and multiple filters within those feedback paths aligned to allow for accumulation of noise, saturation and signal degradation.

While Strega is a complete synthesizer in a tabletop form factor, Bruxa is a Eurorack module designed to be used as one part of a Eurorack modular synthesizer. You will discover a number of differences in layout, signals, and sound. Living inside the Eurorack modular system, Bruxa encourages you to patch your own sound and modulation sources, yielding results surprisingly distinct from Strega.

Bruxa is a special release that will be available by pre-order only. Orders will be shipping out to dealers this October. Contact your favorite Eurorack dealer for details and availability.

Alessandro Cortini + MATTHS Rig Tour

video upload by sonicstate

"Alessandro Cortini played a rare UK gig last weekend, and regular Sonic TALK panelist Matt Hodson AKA MATTHS was booked in the support slot.

We figured it was a great opportunity to have them talk about their gear selection and approach to the performance.

Alessandro opted for something minimal to support his completely improvised approach, with two Make Noise Strega (these were designed in conjunction with Alessandro) and two 0-CTRL - sequencer/CV controllers, Strymon Blue Sky and Volante all into an Allen and Heath Zone 96 DJ mixer, the laptop runs Resolume visuals for the show.

http://cortini.bandcamp.com

Matths has a different approach basing his set around pre writtern material and re-voicing larger modular rig, with the Knobula Poly Cinematic for chords, 1010music Bit Box for triggering CV and gates, the Expert Sleepers ES-9 running from the laptop for triggers from Bitwig, the Soma Pulsar-23, Beatstep

Matt uses an analogue parallel compression path to give the stereo feed to front of house a more consistent polished sound.

HOW TO MAKE: Alessandro Cortini - SCAPPA with Endorphin.es x Andrew Huang - GHOST new V2 firmware

video upload by Endorphin.es

"What if @Alessandro Cortini used Endorphin.es? How would it sound?
Having the GHOST paired with the Furthrrrr Generator for ambience and the Ground Control as a perfect sequencer on hands we could not refuse to replicate some of Alessandro's s masterpieces.
With the new GHOST V2 firmware we now have a shimmer, smoother filter and serial processing: global dry/wet mix, which altogether allows us to even deeper sound design experiments.
Ground Control project files included below."

Music Easel Senza Aria Scappa

Music Easel Senza Aria Scappa from CatManDeux on Vimeo.

"2022 marks two anniversaries: a half century since the debut of Buchla’s Music Easel and a decade since Alessandro Cortini performed these songs while on a solo tour. This is my attempt at recreating those songs on a more modern Easel reissue. This is inspired more upon the Control Voltage Faire performance.

I’m still working on refining the patching, and I’m not using a TimeLine delay like Cortini did. But I think I’m reasonably close. Thanks for watching! And be sure to check out Alessandro’s Forse series, which the final versions would ultimately appear (years after the live performances)."

Strega Musica by Make Noise Music

"Strega Musica is intended to be a free compilation— a gift from Make Noise and a celebration of Strega. All artists on the collection have already been compensated.

"Strega Musica" is a collection of music created with Strega, an instrument designed in close collaboration between Make Noise founder Tony Rolando and Alessandro Cortini. Thoughts on the collection from Strega's co-designers can be found below:

"It’s quite inspiring when people connect with your output and your works, making them theirs, finding their own emotional color in them. It’s truly magic and I will never stop being thankful for it.

Creating an instrument that reflects your idea for a vessel of compositional creativity, and seeing it stimulate other people’s creative output, has to be in a complete different level, and I couldn’t have been caught more off guard by it.

Hearing what people all over the world have made with Strega is invigorating and overwhelming!

If all that wasn’t enough, I’m here to present you a compilation of pieces composed on the Strega by some of our favorite musicians and friends: it’s really great to see how each of them was able to make the instrument their own, and speak their own language through the grammar that is Strega.

May you find your own language through it as well... happy exploring!”

- Alessandro Cortini

"As a listener, I am forever seeking music that has the ability to put me into an alternate space. Sounds that let me travel fluidly through time, forward or backward. I'm not usually looking to be in the now while I listen, as I must be in the now for most other parts of my life.

As an instrument designer, it makes me happy when people find a process, a patch program that creates a sound I'd not known was possible with the instrument. If that sound connects on an emotional level and takes me away from the now, the listener in me is also elated.

As a musician, I'm looking for an instrument that wants to connect with me and travel. Searching out a future I wish to know, or a past time I've lived. Maybe a moment I never thought about until I played that instrument on that day.

It doesn't matter if the sound is complex and never before heard, or simple and universally heard for decades.

As a listener, I traveled fluidly through time as Strega Musica played.

As an instrument designer, I was surprised by the sounds these artists achieved.
As a musician, the Strega sparked in me an energy I've not felt in a decade.”

- Tony Rolando, founder Make Noise

Strega Semi-Modular Synthesizer: Patch Examples, Exploration, and Thoughts

video upload by Patchwerks

"In this video Matthew (aka EZBOT) demonstrates patch examples and shares his experience with the Make Noise Strega Semi-Modular Synthesizer

Order the Make Noise Strega here: https://bit.ly/make_noise_strega

'Make Noise is proud to introduce Strega!

Strega is an audio alchemical experiment. Activate! Spill the tonic into time and let time decay through the filter to hear the results.

Strega is an instrument designed in collaboration with Alessandro Cortini. Inspired by Cortini's music and sonic experimentations, Strega embodies the seen and unseen, the sign and magic, the alchemy of sound.

Strega is able to conjure audio tones, generate control signals, and process external sounds. Patch the 0-COAST or any other line level source into the Strega to unlock new sounds!

This new instrument takes the same form factor as the 0-COAST and 0-CTRL. It was designed to be controlled by the 0-CTRL or the 0-COAST's MIDI CV B outputs and is equally happy interfacing with Eurorack modules as well.' -Make Noise

"Imagine you wished away your surroundings and found yourself in a synthetic landscape where the simplest 3 color pattern animated an entire horizon. If you could suppress your memory enough to experience the new beauty of it, but not so much that you lost the pieces of yourself that make life worth living, this could be your soundtrack.

Synth Design Podcast // E.10 // Tony Rolando, Make Noise

video upload by Synthux Academy

"Co-edited with Teunis Marseille, who's also responsible for the motion graphics and music you're hearing on every episode. Check out his work here: www.instagram.com/teueunis

---

Make Noise interfaces are like a riddle. They remind me of minimalistic art pieces from the early 20th century - inviting you to question geometric compositions of mysterious lines and shapes. These instruments purposefully do not give a straight answer but hint towards a direction one could take.

This is a deliberate design decision that aims to shape the way musicians use a Make Noise instrument.

The design invites a particular kind of composer - one that will dare to explore an untrodden path, in the search for exceptional sounds and performance along the way. The interface is like a guide, a map of sorts, that can be read in various ways.

The Strega, in particular, is interesting because of its unconventional signal path. This is not your traditional "voice", to say the least. Placing the delay/reverb in the center of the circuit directly affects the interaction with the instrument and the kind of sounds that will come out of it.

In this conversation, we dive into the challenges of designing an instrument like the Strega - a synthesizer that was made in close collaboration with artist Alessandro Cortini."

Morphagene as a Stepping Stone of the Creative Process

"In this video, Hélène Vogelsinger uses the Morphagene in combination with her voice to create the foundation of a whole piece.

She starts with a simple rhythmic and tonal vocal pattern, that then evolves into deep and grainy textures.

Podcast 352: Anthony Rolando (Make Noise Music)

video by 20Objects

"For my audience, Anthony Rolando probably needs no introduction. As the product designer at Make Noise Music, his work is found in almost every modular system you’ll run across. From his earliest designs (such as the Maths) to his latest (like the Morphagene), he’s helping to define the future of modular systems.

Recently, Make Noise has come out with a new standalone device – the Strega. This is a remarkable system-in-a-box that includes integrated effects and tone generation, and is particularly focused on live play. As a collaboration with Alessandro Cortini, the Strega is a deep, opinionated view on noise/sound manipulation, and launches a new perspective on what an ‘instrument’ is all about.

In our discussion, we dive into depth on the development of the Strega, Tony’s personal musical adventures, and a bunch of follow-up from our previous podcast (https://artmusictech.libsyn.com/podca...). As with any discussion with Tony, it was revealing, challenging and inspiring.

Enjoy!
