VEMIA is Peter Forrest's auction house. He is the author of The A-Z of Analogue Synthesizer Books.
"This interesting E-mu modular started out life at an American university, at a time when E-mu were happy to sell circuit boards and sub-modules to individuals as well as manufacturing the systems themselves. Because this was built by two people, they were completely familiar with the layout (even though they decided in a few respects to make changes to the design to improve the layout of, for instance, the Universal Active Filter). That meant that they had no lettering on the panels (as well as none of the distinctive blue edging that E-mu themselves use on modules).
Further research: according to a post for an auction in 2014, it was actually built by Pat Gleeson and a PhD student, and there were some pencil markings on the panel which have since worn off. Search the wonderful matrixsynth for Early Vintage E-mu Modular for Sale . Here's the link: https://www.matrixsynth.com/2014/05/early-vintage-e-mu-modular-for-sale.html. The most likely supposition is that this was built for Cal State East Bay (then known as Cal State Hayward), but we're trying to find out more.
In the interests of intelligibility by someone not intimately involved in its creation, we decided that it needed labelling. We did this with cheap tape, and a Brother printer. The results are more useful than beautiful. (If it was partly Pat Gleeson's work, the lettering and blue tape could easily be removed if you wanted.) Cosmetically it is generally good - the knobs have started to discolour a bit after nearly 50 years, but are still nice to use. One silver top is missing.
Working order: every module has been checked out as 100%. Three of them needed some expertise from Tony Wride, who used E-mu parts where possible and Pioneer Tribute parts where not. Altogether this modular is probably about 97% E-mu and 3% Pioneer. As this process has taken a year or two to complete, and the modular hasn't received the regular playing it deserves, some pots may be scratchy when first used.
Check the pics for what you will get. The UAF needed a replacement wooden piece in the cabinet to screw into, so hadn't been connected when we took the pics. Packing 30GBP."

UVI Introduces Quadra Modular
video uploads by UVI
UVI Quadra Modular | Overview
video upload by UVI

30 modular systems in a multi-instrument and sequence designer
Quadra Modular is a powerful 4-part multi-instrument and sequence designer, ideal for the creation of dynamic, rhythmic, and evolving sequences utilizing an incredible selection of patches created on a wide range of modular synthesizers, from vintage to modern, stand-alone to fully customized and purpose-built systems. We approached recording these beasts as if they were acoustic instruments, creating discrete velocity layers and round-robins in order to capture their organic soul.
Quadra is a versatile instrument, capable of a wide range of sounds and uses from standard fare instrumentation to evolving, complex, and adaptive progressions and harmonizations that can be morphed and performed in numerous ways to suit the needs of your production. With a masterful selection of hundreds of professionally designed presets, Quadra offers incredible sound quality and near endless inspiration on-demand.
Quadra leverages a powerful instrument selection, deep factory library, focused and intuitive workflow, and expressive performance controls to deliver cinematic sound quality and near endless musical inspiration.
Curated Instrument Selection
Quadra provides 4 robust instrument layers that can be used together to create striking and evocative performances. Each layer can be assigned from a selection of 30 multi-sampled sources including massive stand-alone systems like the Colossus, to popular small format systems like eurorack.

At the heart of each of Quadra's instrument layers is a powerful, multimode 64-step sequencer with MIDI effects, allowing you to quickly add rhythmic grooves, create arpeggiator sequences, add harmonies, and even quantize the incoming notes to specific scales. Choose a global rate, gate length, and max velocity, then customize your sequence with per-step velocity, link, harmonization, pitch offset, octave offset, gate, step repeat and panning. Save your patterns to disk as presets to share, or use the handy "copy-to" button to quickly duplicate your finished sequence from one layer to another.
Quadra includes a number of MIDI effect modules that allow you to embellish and augment your sequences in creative ways, including Euclidean Emphasis which adds rhythmic accents, MIDI Delay, Random, and Pitch Drift which enrich your sequence, and a scale quantizer that allows you to snap all notes to a scale of your choosing. You can even drag-and-drop the modified sequences as MIDI into a track of your DAW.

Playlist: (you can use the player controls to skip around)
1. Synthfest UK 23: Sequential - Trigon 6 Desktop
At SynthFest UK 2023, we had the opportunity to chat with Chris from Sequential, a part of the Focusrite group. Chris introduced us to the Trigon 6 Desktop, the latest addition to Sequential's synthesizer lineup. This compact desktop version of the Trigon 6 packs a powerful punch, offering three oscillators and a distinctive Dave Smith ladder filter. Designed for those seeking a space-saving solution without compromising on sound quality, the Trigon 6 Desktop retains all the features of its larger sibling, including patch recall, a versatile effects section with various modulation possibilities, and the distinctive feedback control that allows you to sculpt sub-harmonic richness.2. Synthfest UK 2023: Calc And the Prophet X
Trigon 6 Desktop Price: $2,499
https://www.sequential.com/
At Synthfest UK 2023, we caught up with Calc from Sequential, and he gave us the lowdown on the Prophet X. Now, you might be thinking, Prophet X? Haven't we seen that before? Well, you're right, but this hybrid instrument has been quietly making waves in the music world. It combines digital and analog elements, with digital oscillators and a unique twist in the form of multi-sample-based instruments. Yes, you heard that right, it's not just your run-of-the-mill synth; it's a full-on sampler too, boasting an impressive 50 gigabytes of memory for your custom samples. You can treat it like a rompler, a sample player, or even use those samples as oscillators, creating a whole new realm of sonic possibilities.
Plus, it's packed with stereo goodness, allowing you to explore a wide soundstage with ease. It's not your typical synth, and that's what makes its a favourute of Calc's

ALAN R. PEARLMAN FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES NEW BOARD MEMBERS
Press release follows:
The ARP Foundation Strengthens its Mission
Kingston, NY, AUGUST 31, 2023– The Alan R. Pearlman Foundation has welcomed three new appointees to its Board of Directors: Chris Meyer, Collin Russell, and Andrew Schlesinger.
Chris Meyer
As a teenager in the 70s, Chris Meyer took lessons on piano, bass, and modular synthesizers. He went on to write code and help design products for Sequential Circuits, Digidesign, Tom Oberheim, and Roland R&D where he was chief engineer. He is perhaps best known as the creator of Vector Synthesis. >
Chris also taught synthesis at UCLA Extension, wrote numerous articles for Music Technology Magazine plus a column for Keyboard Magazine, and was technical chairman of the MIDI Manufacturers Association where he authored several additions to the spec including MIDI Time Code.
After a two-decade detour in the video and film industry, he recently returned to modular synthesis, creating videos, courses, and articles under the name Learning Modular, and co-authored the popular book Patch & Tweak. Proving that one who teaches can also “do”, most recently he has been focusing on composing and performing sweeping, emotional electronic music under the name Alias Zone which combines synthesizers, samplers, field recordings, and percussion instruments.
Collin Russell
Collin Russell is a composer, sound designer, and educator specializing in modular synthesis and through-composed electronic music. In addition to creating sound libraries and scoring music for films, Collin releases his own personal music in genres ranging from ambient to harsh noise. His process is rooted in the melding of traditional harmonic and rhythmic structures with organic modulations, bridging the gap between familiar and explorative sound.
Synth Gems 1 and Inspire the Music – 50 Years of Roland History.
Andrew Schlesinger
Drew Schlesinger is a renowned professional sound designer who has been involved in creating patches for synthesizers, effects and software products beginning with the Casio CZ-101 in 1984. He’s developed internal presets for over two hundred devices from thirty different manufacturers including Roland, Korg, EMU, Kurzweil, Alesis, Sony, Yamaha, Eventide, Lexicon and Sound Toys among many others.
He's recognized as one of the most prolific and accomplished sound programmers in the MI industry and has created seminal sounds and effects that include “Crystal Echoes” (Shimmer), the “Black Hole” reverb for Eventide and “Prophetic Steps” for Korg’s Prophecy synthesizer.
Drew was recently presented with the Golden Knob Lifetime Achievement Award at the Knobcon 2022 for his work in synth sound design and the contributions to the electronic music community. He’s also included in NAMM’s Oral History Series and is a frequent podcast guest.

"We’re very excited to welcome these talented professionals into our Board of Directors," said Dina Alcalay Pearlman-Ifil, founder and Executive Director of the ARP Foundation and daughter of Alan R. Pearlman. "These three new Directors are well-recognized in their fields and we’re looking forward to their contributions bringing the Foundation’s efforts to the next level.”
The ARP Foundation continues its work with contributors, collaborators, vendors, manufacturers, venues, and synthesizer owners to provide music students with access to vintage ARP synthesizers to explore the endless possibilities of electronic music. The Foundation relies on donors to continue its mission, and encourages everyone who understands the importance of music education to visit https://alanrpearlmanfoundation.org to learn more and pledge their support.

"SE-3X Paraphonic Gooseneck and Magnificent 3 Chord Monte in Eb Major
A CODE8 w/CS-80 filters gets the party started with bright and bratty horns—hard—like St. Regis used to sling in the ‘80s, via our fridge-sized RA-200, periodically rotating-speaker amp.
Greg St. Regs’ immortal patch #1 on the SE-02 then pairs and nearly overtakes the initial CODE bass work.
Shimmering CODE background colors and creations abound, including (but not limited too) cagey vocodering and gorgeous collapsing strings (nearly soloed at end in the Easter Egg hangover). 'You'll see.'
My vocal-eazy leads on the SE-02 channel Keys 2 genius and my good friend (ladies & gentleman), @monteneuble !
Boomstar Brotherhood Drums (SE-80 Chapter) created vast swaths of the root percussive elements—practically all, including hi hats; claps and rims not included. Blame sound wizard & partner-in-crime Sean Charles.
Some Brian Scroggins DMX/EMU Modular magic from a fruitless EMU/Fred Z/Grass Valley adventure, many decades/lifetimes back, swings in and out—Ishtar appearance as well. And I miss you brother. Avidly.
Stereo'Jaco' bass: CODE. Always juicy it is.
Pocket 'Princey" 80’s SEM-filtered chords (Abm to AbM) bounce & thrill. Celestial celeste and ancient tech Cathedral organ offer healing & wisdom ;) with bonus happy feet pedal board dance, tracked incongruously enough with one of CODE8's “Pigalle Party” patches. "Yes that’s right the holy grail of Emu stuff. This item is so rare that there is literally none existent units for sale. Only about 50 made and maybe less then 5 still survived the 90s. We have to say that the routing possibility’s on this unit are quiet impressive. Plenty of CV/Gate triggers/out etc. for all of you modular people. We can guarantee that if you miss this one out, you won’t find another one again."
