Today Marks the 10th Anniversary of the Sequential Oberheim OB-6

Andrew McGowan, pictured here with Tom Oberheim, wrote in to let us know today is the 10th Anniversary of the Sequential OB-6. Andrew was a product designer at DSI/Sequential and worked with Tom Oberheim on the OB-6.

You can find a write-up on some the development of the OB-6 as well as the Prophet-6 on his website, https://www.smartbombdesign.com.

A couple of excerpts:

"I was sitting in my office at Seer Systems one day in 1997 or thereabouts when the phone on my desk rang. It was Dave Smith calling from his home. 'I’ve been talking to Tom Oberheim. He’s between jobs and wants to learn about software synths, so I asked him if he wanted to write the Reality operation manual. Can you get him set up and manage that?' I knew who Tom was, of course, but I had never met him, and now Dave was asking me to be his manager. I had no reason to believe that Tom was anything other than the warm, bright, and kind person that I now know he is, but the idea that I would be managing him made me deeply uncomfortable.

Seer Systems was in the process of developing Reality, which is generally considered to be the first 'professional' software synthesizer, though I’m not certain what makes one synthesizer professional and another not."

[Side note: Propellerheads Rebirth was also released in 1997, however the demo version was released in October 1996. A bit like The Damned vs. Sex Pistols for those in the know!]

And [thought this was funny]:

"Those Fucking Lines

Tom and I had talked about synths over the years and, on several occasions, he remarked how often people asked him to remake the OB-X, perhaps because not many were made. Or maybe Rush/Tom Sawyer? I don’t know. What little I did know about the OB-X was that it had a (low-pass only) SEM filter, and we had already made a synth with an SEM filter in it. And our hardware engineer Tony Karavidas had worked at Oberheim and owned multiple Oberheim synths. I also felt very strongly that if we were going to make two poly synths that were essentially the same except for the filter, the 2-pole, SEM state-variable filter would be complementary to the Prophet-6’s 4-pole, OTA low-pass filter.

Tom’s wish list was short. He didn’t want the Prophet-6’s analog distortion. And he wanted the OB-Xa’s blue lines."

Read the rest here

[P.S. I still own an OB-6 desktop and it's one of my most cherished synths. There is something organic about it. The demos I've heard of Sequential's new FOURM have that about them. I have enough synths as it is but the FOURM is very, very tempting for this particular reason.]

Moss Healing Meditation Music 🌿 Nervous System Calm & Anxiety Relief (432Hz)

video upload by Bio Music Vibrations

"Moss Meditation is a slow, immersive ambient soundscape inspired by the quiet intelligence of moss — one of the oldest and most resilient forms of life on Earth.

This deep meditation music was created to support nervous system regulation, emotional healing, and inner stillness.

There is no rush here. No rhythm to follow. Only sustained drones, gentle harmonic movement, and spacious tones tuned to 432Hz, allowing the body and mind to soften naturally.

Like moss, this music grows slowly.
It does not demand attention.
It creates an environment where healing can unfold on its own.

Perfect for:
Deep meditation & mindfulness
Anxiety and stress relief
Nervous system calming
Emotional release and rest
Sleep, stillness, and presence
Ambient background for healing spaces

Let this music become a safe place — where breath slows, thoughts dissolve, and the body remembers how to rest.

🎧 Best experienced with headphones or a calm listening space.
🌿 Created by Bio Music Vibrations."

How to make the Rush Tom Sawyer synth sound [No Talking] #synth #rush #tomsawyer #oberheim #teo5

video upload by SynthSoniq

"This video is a tutorial on how to make the Rush Tom Sawyer synth intro sound. It's good to know how to create this patch even if you don't want to play Rush, because it teaches you about filter envelopes, resonance, and the general character of a synth's filter. I like making it on any synth because it gives me a feel for that synth's sound. It's then easy to add some attack to the envelope to turn the patch into a great pad, or decrease the decay to make some cool bass sounds."

3rd Wave Analog Core Synth Soundset

video upload by Creative Spiral

"This sound set includes 100 new synth patches for the 3rd Wave, focused on the hybrid analog capabilities of the synth. Lots of classic/vintage synth inspired sounds, famous song patches, binaural stereo stacks and modern analog designs. https://sounddesign.sellfy.store/p/3r...

I've made hundreds of sound designs on this great synth, using all the various engines, including PPG, modern wavetables and the new sample engine -- but this sound set is focused entirely on the hybrid analog / VA capabilities of the synth. Dozens of famous song tone patches are included, and classic analog sounds inspired by legendary vintage synths: Sequential Prophets, Oberheim OBs, Roland Jupiters, Yamaha GX and CS, and Moogs, plus modern sound designs that take advantage of the extensive capabilities of the 3rd Wave.

The sound set is available here:
https://sounddesign.sellfy.store/p/3r...

The patches inspired by famous artists/songs include ones by: Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, MUSE, Tears for Fears, Toto, The Cars, Boards of Canada, Prince, RUSH, Daft Punk, M83, Stranger Things, Blade Runner, Harold Faltermeyer, Foreigner, Journey, Duran Duran, Simple Minds, Talk Talk, Van Halen, Thom Yorke, Radiohead, Steven Wilson, Adam Holzman, Michael Jackson and more.

The demo video features about half the patches included in the soundset... there are 50+ more patches as well! The sound in the demo video is direct from the synth, using only onboard 3rd Wave effects, and no external effects added. The drums in a few of the demos are from a Roland TR-8S.

Being perhaps the most popular version of one of the most iconic monophonic analog synth series of all time is no easy feat, but the Moog Minimoog Model D manages to pull it off. As one of the first non-modular synthesizers, the Minimoog Model D is highly intuitive and requires very little knowledge to use. The model D boasts contouring circuits and three separate, completely original oscillators, one of which can be used as an LFO. Although the Model D was reissued, the '70s Minimoog Model D hasn't depreciated in value, desirability, or style.

Watch me bring that sound back to life!🎹🕺"

Hardware Jams Kebabs Challenge - Don't Steal Kebabs :-(

video upload by SynthAddict

"I fell asleep last night on Mulholland Drive and woke-up to sunlight - had to
rush this little guy out on my OP-Z. 🙂
It was a very busy few days at NAMM.

OP-Z track is dark and brooding to scare you into not stealing
that kebab!
Notice the use of the pitch bender that no OP-Z user seems to use.
Had some glitches but no time for a re-take."

Behringer's UB-Xa Arrives

video upload by Behringer

"The long wait is over. The UB-Xa is ready to be unleashed.

After 6 years of intense development, what started as a labor of love morphed into a development of the most complex and versatile platform to serve not only the UB-Xa but all our polyphonic synthesizers we have planned.

'A special thank you goes to all our engineers and beta testers who spent years with us designing, engineering, testing, and fine tuning this beautiful instrument. We are immensely grateful for all your contribution.' - Uli

Music and Video created by Patrick with the UB-Xa."

Update: "List Price: $1,499 (stay tuned for a little surprise)"

Behringer notes it will be available on Amazon of all places.

"Classic Analog 16-Voice Multi-Timbral Polyphonic Synthesizer with 8 Vintage Modes, Dual VCFs and 61-Key Poly After-Touch Keyboard

Embrace the legacy and make your mark on history with the UB-Xa from Behringer. More than just a recreation of a classic synthesizer, we’ve made sure that the UB-Xa has all the bells, whistles and characteristics that came with the original, but it’s also filled to the brim with modern features such as velocity and after-touch, 512 user program memories and comprehensive MIDI implementation. This makes for a well-rounded synth that’ll make friends with anything in your setup.

Faithful Recreation and More
To recreate its iconic growl and sizzle, we dove deep into the inner workings of the original OB-Xa and brought them into the 21st century including all its original factory patches that made the 80s roar. Thanks to its VCOs and VCFs heavily based on the original 3340 and 3320 chip designs, 16 voices and the ability to split its keyboard so you can layer 2 different sounds, the UB-Xa is capable of conjuring up massive sounding riffs.

An Icon for the Icons
The UB-Xa is a synth like no other that stands on the shoulders of giants! Its legacy is what gave birth to the 80s most iconic hits from the world’s most famous artists! From Rush’s Geddy Lee, The Police, Prince to Van Halen, and even the iconic Terminator theme composed by Brad Fiedel, the UB-Xa’s lineage is filled only with the greats and now you can make your own mark on history as well."

Soon to be available on Amazon.

Oberheim Introduces OB-X8 Desktop Analog Synth Module

You might remember Oberheim mentioning they had something new coming to this year's Superbooth.

Here it is. The OB-X8 Desktop Module. Be sure to click the pics for the full size shots.

Press release follows:

Oberheim Announces OB-X8 Desktop Analog Synth Module Fits Perfectly into Your Studio, Your Music, Your Life

San Francisco, CA — Oberheim today announced the much-anticipated desktop version of their highly acclaimed OB-X8 eight-voice analog synthesizer, which faithfully recreates sounds from the classic Oberheim OB-X, OB-Xa and OB-8 synthesizers of the eighties. And now all its presets, synthesis features, and sound editing controls are available in a compact package that fits everyone’s creative space.

“The original OB synths were jam-packed with components and took up a lot of space. There was no way you could contemplate getting even a four-voice version of that sound out of a desktop or rack-mount unit,” mused Tom Oberheim. “Well, here we are in 2023: eight voices of our amazing OB-X8 three-in-one synthesizer now comes in a size that fits your studio.”

The new OB-X8 desktop version does not include the 61-note Fatar keyboard and expression levers found in the original, but don’t let that stop you from experiencing all the sonic power of these monster synths in a footprint that’s compact enough for studios of any size, and convenient enough to take on the road.

Just like the keyboard version, the desktop OB-X8 boasts an identical sound engine, featuring an all-analog signal path with discrete VCOs, VCAs, and filters. And it still manages to provide the same knob-per-function front panel sound designing experience, with immediate access to virtually all the synth’s parameters.

“Bringing back the Oberheim brand has been a joy,” said David Gibbons, CEO. “And since the introduction of the OB-X8 keyboard in May 2022, we’ve heard an overwhelming desire for a desktop module version catering to those whose free studio space doesn’t quite match their enthusiasm for unique synth sounds.”

In the hands of such luminaries as Prince, Van Halen, and Herbie Hancock, Oberheim synths were more than just instruments, they provided the soundtrack of an era. Now a whole new generation of artists are discovering their voices through OB-X8. “When I was shown the new OB-X8, I was immediately impressed with the forensic level of detail that went into its design and the respect for its lineage,” said Trent Reznor, the creative force behind Nine Inch Nails, and an Academy Award-winning composer. “I’m excited more people will be able to experience this classic instrument.”

OB-X8 desktop module weighs approximately 9 lbs. 9 oz. (4.34 kg) and measures 22.00” L x 8.50” W x 4” H (55.88 cm x 21.59 cm x 10.16 cm).

The OB-X8 desktop module is available for pre-order now, with a US MAP price of $3,499. Shipping worldwide in June.

Moog Taurus II Bass Synthesizer with Pedals

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Moog Taurus II. You know it, you love it. It's a Moog Rogue with an expansive, easy organ-pedal-style foot controller. Floyd, Rush, Yes, Genesis...Super deep thick bass or space jams as you wish. I just saw Brett Netson play one of these with Earth the other month.

The pictures show you the whole deal. Works great, all cabling, newish proper power supply. Pedals all work, electronics all work. No stand, but it's just a pipe and easily replaceable...personally I did not need or want the stand; I just put the synth module on top of an amp.

You can buy Rick Wakeman's elsewhere online for $8k or pay much less for mine! Local pickup in Chicago is fine, no fee for that, will meet up if you can get reasonably close."

Generative Ambient music in Ableton Live (free project file) | generative music for studying

video upload by CNTR RNDM

"Stumbled on this amazing @ANDREW HUANG modular twinkle jam (link below) the other day and it inspired me to try and achieve something similar in Ableton Live. Ableton is really great when it comes to generating and manipulating midi notes. It provides you with all these tools that let you manipulate midi events in so many ways. In fact, you could say that Ableton, at least kind of, is a / is like a modular synthesizer. @Seed to Stage has a really great tutorial on this topic (link below).
So, for this jam, I basically just used three instances of Wavetable (one for the lower notes, one for the mid notes, and one for the higher notes) and a TON of Ableton's midi fx to create and edit midi events, like, randomly. I also used @Ned Rush s probability tool (link below) to modulate note probability over time, you know, just to create some movement. And to top it off, I used the amazing Microtuner to create kind of a microtonal-I'm-a-bit-tipsy kind of vibe.
And the cool thing is, you can download the stock plugin version of the project file for free…have fun with it! Here's the link:

(little sidenote: this generative patch is BY NO MEANS perfect...I should have limited the range of the high notes here and there for example...so please tweak it, improve it, do whatever you like and make it your own!!!)

While we're at it, why don’t you grab my free drums sample pack as well:

Feel free to check my other packs on gumroad as well:

All my samples and kits are copyright free - you can use them in your own productions, videos, whatever. If you make a cool track with one of my kits or sample packs, let me know!"
