External MIDI Amiga Synth? Wait, what?!

"A few years ago I restored my childhood Amiga 500, and only recently found a way to use a soft synth, Aegis Sonix V2, with external MIDI control. I saw ‪@magicalsynthadventure3216‬ video on the topic a while back, and on a whim decided to revisit the idea of using my Amiga as a synth. Thanks to an Amibay.com forum thread, I learned that it's pretty easy to get Aegis Sonix V2 to respond to incoming MIDI, and so I was off to the races. Enjoy!

Update: An interesting side note is that Sonix was released in 1987 with a beta in 1986. That's 10 years earlier than Dave Smith's Seer Systems Reality, which was released in 1997. Seer Systems Reality is often credited as the world's first soft synth. Curious if the distinction was between an editor/interface for the existing Amiga sound chip vs. a self contained software synthesizer.

Today Marks the 10th Anniversary of the Sequential Oberheim OB-6



Andrew McGowan, pictured here with Tom Oberheim, wrote in to let us know today is the 10th Anniversary of the Sequential OB-6. Andrew was a product designer at DSI/Sequential and worked with Tom Oberheim on the OB-6.

A couple of excerpts:

"I was sitting in my office at Seer Systems one day in 1997 or thereabouts when the phone on my desk rang. It was Dave Smith calling from his home. 'I’ve been talking to Tom Oberheim. He’s between jobs and wants to learn about software synths, so I asked him if he wanted to write the Reality operation manual. Can you get him set up and manage that?' I knew who Tom was, of course, but I had never met him, and now Dave was asking me to be his manager. I had no reason to believe that Tom was anything other than the warm, bright, and kind person that I now know he is, but the idea that I would be managing him made me deeply uncomfortable.

Seer Systems was in the process of developing Reality, which is generally considered to be the first 'professional' software synthesizer, though I’m not certain what makes one synthesizer professional and another not."

[Side note: Propellerheads Rebirth was also released in 1997, however the demo version was released in October 1996. A bit like The Damned vs. Sex Pistols for those in the know!]

Tom and I had talked about synths over the years and, on several occasions, he remarked how often people asked him to remake the OB-X, perhaps because not many were made. Or maybe Rush/Tom Sawyer? I don’t know. What little I did know about the OB-X was that it had a (low-pass only) SEM filter, and we had already made a synth with an SEM filter in it. And our hardware engineer Tony Karavidas had worked at Oberheim and owned multiple Oberheim synths. I also felt very strongly that if we were going to make two poly synths that were essentially the same except for the filter, the 2-pole, SEM state-variable filter would be complementary to the Prophet-6’s 4-pole, OTA low-pass filter.

Tom’s wish list was short. He didn’t want the Prophet-6’s analog distortion. And he wanted the OB-Xa’s blue lines."

[P.S. I still own an OB-6 desktop and it's one of my most cherished synths. There is something organic about it. The demos I've heard of Sequential's new FOURM have that about them. I have enough synths as it is but the FOURM is very, very tempting for this particular reason.]

Keyboard Magazine Interview with Dave Smith


"When it comes to how keyboard players make music, Dave Smith may be the most influential person alive. His early experiments building sequencers led to his first company, Sequential Circuits, releasing the first programmable polyphonic slab synth, the Prophet-5. His work on wavetable and vector synthesis in the Prophet-VS was reborn in the enduring Korg Wavestation. His Seer Systems Reality is widely acknowledged as the first commercially available 'professional' soft synth. And though he tells the story more modestly, it’s acceptable shorthand to say that he invented MIDI."

A pioneer of the synth and MIDI world, Tom Oberheim co-designed the Synthesizer Expansion Module (SEM), a device that allowed musicians to simultaneously combine live playing and sequenced playback - a concept that pre-dated the MIDI revolution. In 1981, he, along with Roland's Ikutaro Kakehashi and Sequential's Dave Smith, developed the MIDI spec, which changed the course of modern music. Technical Grammy award-winner Roger Linn invented the LM-1 Drum Computer (the first sample-based drum machine) in 1979. Drew Neumann

Composer/synthesist Drew Neumann (www.drewneumann.com) created the captivating music, sound effects, and voices for Peter Chung's Aeon Flux, launched on MTV's critically acclaimed Liquid Television animation series in 1991. Drew also composed music for all 84 episodes of Nickelodeon's The Wild Thornberrys and the Paramount Pictures feature The Wild Thornberrys Movie, 52 episodes of Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, along with episodes of The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy and Evil Con Carne on the Cartoon Network. In addition, he created sound effects for Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Rollercoaster Rabbit, and Off His Rockers, and composed music for Disney Television Animation, E! Entertainment Television's Talk Soup, and major advertising agencies worldwide. He has consulted and designed sounds for synthesizer manufacturers/distributors Tom Oberheim of Marion Systems, Studio Electronics, Dave Smith Instruments, Moog Music, GSF Agency, and many more. Drew is currently working on shorts for Renegade Animation and for Frederator's Cartoon Hangover series Bravest Warriors.

Eric Persing

Eric Persing was the chief sound designer for Roland from 1984 to 2005, programming sounds for popular hardware synthesizers including the innovative D-50. An accomplished studio musician and composer, Eric is the founder and creative director of Spectrasonics (www.spectrasonics.net), a leading softsynth company that produces Trilian, Stylus RMX, and the flagship synth Omnisphere.

Dave Smith

Synthesizer pioneer Dave Smith founded Sequential Circuits during the mid '70s and in 1977 designed the world's first fully programmable polyphonic synthesizer, the Prophet-5. He was the spearhead behind the development of MIDI in 1983, for which he received a Technical Grammy Award in 2013. Dave served as a consultant for Yamaha and Korg and was the president of Seer Systems, developer of the first professional software synthesizer, Reality. In 2002 he founded Dave Smith Instruments (www.davesmithinstruments.com), manufacturer of analog and hybrid synthesizers built in San Francisco.

Moderator: Mark Vail

Music journalist, historian, teacher, and performer Mark Vail discovered synthesizers in 1973 and bought his first in 1976. After earning an MFA in electronic music at Mills College in 1983, he served on the editorial staff at Keyboard magazine from 1988 to 2001 and has taught Propellerhead Reason classes since 2003. An Interview with Alessandro Cortini

Alessandro Cortini is the man behind SONOIO. He played synths for Nine Inch Nails and brought us the SuONOIO synthesizer produced with Scott Jaeger of The Harvestman.  Alessandro  is known for his use of Buchla systems new and old.  He currently has a new free release featuring remixes from Alan Wilder, Telefon tel aviv, Eric Avery and more. There is also a 7 inch for sale on www.sonoio.org.

The following is my interview with him primarily focused on synths.

1. How did the world of synths start for you?

"I was schooled on guitar, back in italy. I am from a very small town so there weren't a lot of bands to play with... I got asked to "help" and record guitars on a record by a local band, called Autobeat, fronted by Franco Naddei (now francobeat). He was really into synths and electronica, so he basically opened a whole new world to me.... He ended up doing a remix for SONOIO on the upcoming remix record which is very cool, considering he was the one who introduced me to Depeche Mode (Alan Wilder is doing a remix too)."

2. What were your first synths and what did you think about them?

"Besides from my friend's instruments, my first "synth" was a Casio VL series, if I recall correctly, when i was 10 years old. On a more involved level, I personally started with software. The first one was Seer Systems Reality on PC...I moved to mac as soon as i could, and started using Cubase's Neon a lot (a small built in VST). Next were Bitheadz Retro AS-1 for synths and Unity DS-1 for samples, all "synced" to Logic (it definitely wasn't as elegant as it should have been).


Emagic's ES-1 was sort of a "step up" because of its integration with Logic...but didn't sound too good.

Bottom line is that I recall being extremely excited and happy for being able to record and compose on my laptop wherever I was, and didn't see the need for hardware synths.... until I borrowed a minimoog and spent a good 4 hours with headphones, a pencil stuck in a key to keep it going and tweaking knobs: that made it obvious that interface, much more than sound, were the reason why it was worth to commit to a dedicated hardware unit.

My infatuation with the minimoog quickly vanished, and moved onto NordLead, Nord Modular and lastly a small used Analogue Systems modular synthesizer. The AS was the beginning of a long relationship with modulars: for once, there were no rules, no predefined paths and no wrong moves (almost).

I expanded my AS until I sold it in order to buy an old paper faceplate Serge, which was then sold once I got Buchla fever…."

3. I still remember the day you announced you'd be working with Nine Inch Nails. What synths did you use at the time and what was that experience like?

"At the time I was still using my nord modular and AS modular.... The audition was odd: I was basically instructed to play on top of a live recording, which I did. The first two songs I played were Wish (on guitar and synths) and Closer. I remember preparing my little patches on the Nord Modular for the audition... I wish I kept those sounds cause they were pretty funny.


The whole NIN experience was amazing, especially the time in the studio working on Ghosts.
I have to admit the reason I left was touring, which became a bit too strenuous and not enjoyable anymore.

I got very involved in the studio side of things: I feel much more at ease working on music in a studio environment than performing live. Live performance always feels like a test, to different extents, generally with little room for spontaneity (my opinion, of course)."

4. Did you explore any interesting synths or new forms of synthesis at the time? I recall Trent Reznor used the Dewanatron Swarmatron for "The Social Network" He is also known for having a few coveted pieces of gear including one of two Waldorf Shadow XTks.

"Trent has a studio full of toys so I had the chance to play with a myriad of instruments I have never seen or heard before...but in the end I would always gravitate towards the modular."

5. You are known in synth circles for you use of Buchla modulars. How did you get introduced to them and what was it that gravitated you towards them vs. other synths? How do you approach the Buchla and how has it impacted your music?

"When I was teaching synthesis at Musicians Institute I basically had to write the curriculum myself. Part of it included an introduction to the history of these instruments and I remember being completely mesmerized by some of the Buchla photos I was able to track down... the way the instrument looked like a toy, like a self contained instrument that first and foremost called you to play with its looks.

I remember when Don announced the 200e series in 2004: I printed the whole site so i could have in my student role book and read it during breaks... I was obsessed.

Peter Grenader was responsible for introducing me to historical Buchla records such as Subotnick's Sidewinder and Sky of Cloudless Sulfur, and his Plan B modules kept my hunger for Buchla inspired technology in check for a while... until I was able to afford my own 200e system.


I am fortunate enough to own both a 200e and a vintage 200 system."

6. How do the Buchla 200e and 200 compare in your opinion, specifically in regards to sound and interface?

"I would say the interface is very close, unless you start analyzing high density 200e modules such as the 251e, where there's a lot going on in a small space. Soundwise, there are similarities, yes, but I see them as two different instruments, and approach them as such.


I love the 200e's 259e wavetable waveform generators, and the ability to use patch storing in a creative way.The 291e is undoubtedly superior to its 200 version, in my opinion. The 222e/223e input port is the culmination of Don's 40 years tinkering with touch surfaces.

The 200e has its own sound and you'd be disappointed if you wanted it to sound like a 200. It just doesn't do it well, mainly because it wasn't designed to recreate that aspect of the 200 instrument, in my opinion, but mostly its interface, applied to modern technology.

7. Recently you've been using the Teenage Engineering OP-1. What are your thoughts on it? How do you like working with it, specifically the physical design and interface, and of course as an audio processing tool?

"I think the OP-1, with its limitations and quirkiness, is a very creative instrument. I can't deny being a bit disappointed by the electro style demos that started popping up once it was announced, but as soon as I got my beta unit it was undeniable it could be used to do completely different things. It goes wherever I go!!! I enjoy the well laid out interface and its sound engines, which are fairly unique in their incarnation. It's a great sketchpad for ideas and sound design, and I have been using it on tour as a vocal effect also."

8. Aside from the Buchla and OP-1, what other synths and/or forms of synthesis do you find yourself gravitating towards when experimenting with sound and music?

"Definitely the more odd looking/sounding ones, preferably without a keyboard."

9. You recently worked with The Harvestman on the SuONOIO. How did that come about and what was that experience like?

"Once I finished recording the first SONOIO record, Blue, I wanted to come up with an interesting product to accompany its release. Something similar to a Buddha Machine, but playable, and something original like a BugBrand synth, but still linked to the album release.... It became clear that it had to be an analog/digital hybrid. Scott was the first to come to mind, as i believe he is extremely talented in bringing the advantages of digital design to an analog interface. After a few phone calls and 3 weeks later, we had the 1st prototype ready....2 protos later, the instrument was done. It was a very quick back and forth collaboration... almost makes us feel guilty, since we had so much fun making it!"
10. Do you see yourself more as a performer, an explorer of synthesis or a bit of both depending on context?


"I really just like playing with instruments and come up with interesting sounds. I am not too good at describing what I do... I just do it!"

11. Is there anything else you'd like to share with our readers?


"I am working on releasing my first instrumental record...it should be out early next year...i am very excited to release it!"

Seer Systems Renews Demand for Accountability, Retraction from EFF

Portola Valley, California, USA - Seer Systems, CEO, Stanley Jungleib has renewed his demand for accountability at the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and a retraction for false and defamatory statements made by the civil liberties organization.

In a move that should alarm all independent inventors and software developers, the EFF has come to the aid of corporations seeking to profit by denying the validity of Seer's patent (US Patent #5,886,274) on real-time music distribution systems. Seer Systems created the first host-based software synthesizer in 1992 and the first real-time interactive music distribution system, SeerMusic, in 2000. In 1999, Seer was awarded the '274 patent for the technology on which SeerMusic was based.

The EFF has repeatedly called the '274 patent "bogus" and "invalid" and engaged in a campaign to have the '274 patent revoked, listing Seer Systems on its Patent Busting project's "Wanted" list for "willful ignorance of prior art." By "prior art," the EFF refers to Jungleib's own 1995 book, General MIDI, which it asserts is a blueprint for SeerMusic. Music industry leaders and legal experts disagree and have already defended Seer in court cases dating back to 2004.

SynthLab for the XO - One Laptop Per Child Project

Remember TamTam? (click to check out the video) TamTam is a music suite similar to GarageBand for the OLPC XO. OLPC or One Laptop Per Child is a nonprofit organization that is trying to get laptops in the hands of children across the world, who could not afford one otherwise. You can read more about the program on the OLPC website. They are currently offering a buy one get one free up until Dec 31st, so if you are curious you can buy one for yourself and one will be sent out to a child.

What's interesting to synthheads is it will also feature a modular synth program called SynthLab. Think Native Instruments Reactor, the original Seer Systems Reality and other module based software synthesizers where you connect various components to create sound. SynthLab is "designed for older children who are ready to venture into more sophisticated sound design, SynthLab is a mini-lab for acoustic- and electronic-circuit construction." Pretty cool.

1972 - Triadex Muse - first digital synth
""is the first digital musical instrument and was produced in 1972. It was
designed by Edward Fredkin and Marvin Minsky at MIT. It is an algorithmic
music generator: it uses digital logic circuits to produce a sequence of
notes based on the settings of various parameters. It has four small sliders
in that control Volume, Tempo, Pitch, and Fine Pitch. It is not known how
many were made, but they are considered extremely rare.
The Muse is the subject of U. S. Patent 3610801"
1973 - Coupland Digital Music Synthesizer - First Digital (Triadex beat it?) Update via Peter Grenader: "No time to read through all these posts to see if it's come up yet, but the Coupland was vaporwear...it never existed. I met Mark Vail, who's now a friend, by writing him a letter informing him that his story about the Coupland in his Vintage Synthesizers book (GREAT book) which mentioned it's only recorded showing was at the AES show in LA in 1978 was a farce. I was there - at their booth and their suite in the Hilton where the instrument was said to be. I was there on the first day, I was there on the last day. The only thing they had was a small model - about six inches across, sitting on a table. The booth was amazing - this radial orb multiple people could sit in, with a cover that came over each person which played what I remembered was a very impressive demo which swirled around four speakers inside the box. I, and everyone else, were blown away. They kept saying...'it will be here tomorrow, it'll be here tomorrow'...so I showed up the last day just to see it, figuring by the then it would have arrived...it didn't. I did see the frst Synthclavier at that show however. Their suite was across the hall from the Coupland folk. That completely kicked the crap out of everything else shown that year."

1975 - Buchla 502 - six voice polyphonic with minicomputer and ability to save patches to tape drive. Development on the 500 series began in 1969.
1975 - Oberheim FVS - four voice polyphonic with Polyphonic Synthesizer Programmer. Not sure if the Buchla 502 or FVS was released first.
1976 - PPG - PPG 1003 sonic carrier - 1st programmable mono/duo synth with patch memory (this, along with the model 1020, might have been the 1st synths to use DCO's as well)
1977 - Yamaha - CS50/CS60/CS80 - first single enclosure polyphonic keyboard synthesizers with the CS80 to be the first synth with poly aftertouch
1977 (late) - Oberheim - OB-1 - 1st commercial programmable mono synth with patch memory
1978 (late) - PPG - Wavecomputer 360 - 1st wavetable synth
1978 - Sequential Circuits - microprocessor control the SCI prophet 10 (briefly) and the P-5 --- again based on existing E-mu tech stuff

2912 - KalQuestoTron - the first genetically engineered synth. Each cell is an oscillator, filter, and neural sequencer. Can be delivered via injection to always play 'hold music' in your head.

I thought it might be fun to have a "first synth to..." post. There's been a lot of buzz over Sonic State's Top 20 Synths of All Time with good reason. What exactly is a "top synth?" Is it it's influence on the music scene? It's rarity and lust appeal? The number of synths sold? According to Sonic State their list was the result of Sonic State reader's voting for their favorite synths. Blame the voters if you don't like what you see. Based on what has come up on the list so far, the E-Mu Proteus and Roland JV-1080 for example as well as the Roland Jupiter 8 not even making the top ten, I'm guessing a bit of it has to do with the vote and... possibly the most influential/ground breaking synths for their time. The JV1080 and Proteus? Not super sexy in this day and age, but what they offered in their time? Who knows. It's obviously subjective. But there is something that isn't. The most influential synths of all time not because they were super sexy or utilitarian, but because they offered something that was not previously available.

I thought what might be interesting to create a list of the first synths to feature a particular technology or feature. For example what was the fist synth to bring FM to the table? Was it the DX7 or a predecessor? What was the first digital synth and when? The first additive synth? I have a good idea and could probably look it all up, but that wouldn't be any fun, so.... You tell me. I am going to make this an open post that will live over time. You get to participate by putting an entry in the comments. I will update the list and when I do I will change the time stamp of the post to keep it current. That said, for the archives, this post went up with a time stamp of 4/11/07 7:20 PM PST. I'll start the list (btw, do correct me on the MOOG, what model should we be talking about here? The A, B, C or D or all of them?).

Seer Systems - First software synth

Boot up that copy of Win98! : )

Please note that all Seer Software runs on Windows 95 or 98™. An XP™ version is in preparation but no release date can yet be offered. You can try to set up a "dual-boot" system. But committing a fast legacy Win 98 machine with digital output from Reality™ is still justifiable in many cases. "

BTW, check out the history page on Dave Smith Instruments. Dave Smith founded Sequential Circuits, is responsible for the Prophet 5, Prophet VS, MIDI, the Korg Wavestation and this. He also worked at Yamaha where I wouldn't be surprised if he worked on the Yamaha TG33 Wavetable synth.

Interesting connection to Syd which I posted about earlier. Antonio Tuzzi, author of a software synthesizer named Phoenix developed in 1997 for the Mac, dropped by to post a comment on the Syd.

"I think I've seen for the first time Syd in 1996. Was my inspiration: I wrote a couple of emails to Jim and after that I decided to write a virtual analog real time synth and by the 1997 I had Phoenix up and running on MacOS9.
Phonenix is (was) a very powerful tool! It was used in couple of schools.
If you have a powermac still running MACOS9... let me know

I find the very first software synthesizers fascinating. I remember when I saw Dave Smith's Seer Systems Reality for the first time. I thought this is it. The time has finally come for synthesizers in software, the realization of the PPG Realizer. I remember thinking the next step would be less powerful but more accessible shrink wrapped synths in software. Now we have thousands of software synthesizers available to us, many even free.

remember, was a development stage application (used in digidesign in
1997~1998...)

is written for MACOS9 (but still run with some chocking on MACOSX calssic mode)

is a RAR file that contais a DMG image, file should be copied in
alocal directory on the final computer

there is pratically no documentation. but the synth is still able to
create real time AIF files that can be reused in samplers or in
composign software (ProTools ?).

implemented oscillators tables filters string filters delays reverb
analyzer and room simulators
