Synth Improv 2015 05 24

Published on May 24, 2015 Randy Piscione

"A bit of improv with the synths. No drama or head-bobbing, I’d only hurt myself. Just playing. Sound comes from the camera (Panasonic DMC-ZS3) mic (stereo), it’s not great but it works. Hit "SHOW MORE" for the equipment details.

For the gearheads, bass is coming from the Eurorack, mostly a Living VCO and two nonlinearcircuits VCOs, sequenced by a BlackSeq from d:Machinery and quantized by Distings. A MIDIAlf is running slowly to change the key on the quantizers, and clocking the sequencer through a Pamela’s Workout (which is not all that happy about taking in a MIDI clock).

Pad and lead are provided by a Roland Juno 60 and Alpha Juno 2 on one side, and the Roland A90EX closest to the camera is controlling itself, 6 Shruthis, a PreenFM, Korg MicroStation and iPad running Animoog. The lead you can hear but can’t see comes from a Kurzweil K2600XS.

I am disappointed to admit that even after all these years, playing lead with my left hand still confuses me. The old guys like me might notice a bit of a shout-out to Earth, Wind and Fire."

Happy Knobbing 2015 Modular Synth Jam (w/ floor impressions) #TTNM

Published on May 26, 2015 The Tuesday Night Machines

"I attended the Happy Knobbing modular synth meet lest weekend and jammed a little bit on performance night.

This was the first time that I played in front of an audience, so I was quite nervous, although the patch wasn't complex and I mainly just stuck to mixing voices and manual filter cutoff modulation.

The weekend was amazing and I met lots of great people, many of whom I only knew though the modular synth forums. Since admission was only with your own modular gear, there were plenty of machines to check out and talk about.

I forgot the name of who filmed me with my GoPro, but thanks a lot!!! :)

Questions or comments? Go ahead and post them below! :) Thanks for watching! Check out my channel for more Synthesizer Music.

Audio gear used:
- Eurorack Modular Synthesizer (with Malekko Wiard Anti-Oscillator, Klangbau Köln Rob Hordijk Twin Peaks Filter, Koma Kommander, Klangbau Köln Wavetable VCO, Erica Polivoks VCF, etc.)
- LepLoop Groovebox
- EHX SuperEgo Synth Engine Pedal with Gate Mod
- Zoom R16 (recording & mastering)

Filmed with a GoPro Hero 4 Silver."

Arpeggist for iPad

Published on May 26, 2015 virsyn

"Arpeggist is a MIDI Note arpeggiator with a very flexible step matrix editor for programming and a unique “rolling dice” random arpeggio generator. You can build arpeggios from scratch or use one of the factory arpeggios as foundation. You can also create an unlimited number of user arpeggio presets.

Just play a chord or a single note and it gets transformed into a grooving monophonic synth line or a rhythmical chord pattern.

Available soon in the Apple App Store"

Update: now available via iTunes: Arpeggist - VirSyn

Nord Lead 3 Performance Synthesizer w/Nord Case SN NC03724

"This is a Nord Lead 3 Performance Synthesizer in excellent condition. This is not one of the early models that had issues with the power supply capacitors. This Nord 3 synthesizer functions perfectly, and comes in a new Nord padded soft case. There is one small scratch in the paint that I was going to touch-up, but I decided to just leave it as is."

I don't think I knew earlier models had issues.

"This device is amazing. The sonic potential is so vast that I doubt you could fully explore it in a lifetime. The circuitry may seem trite and simple but it is used in a unique and nonstandard way- this is a truly experimental synthesizer; and experimenting with it yeilds some fantastic results (see sound and video demos below). It can create anything from mellow analogue hums or harsh phasing drones, from sample and hold style biddly-beeps to white noise walls of chaos.

This synth was originally Cacophonos 1, however, when that synth didn't sell, I gutted it and in a last ditch attempt to make some money I made a fancier case and added lots of extra features like CV inputs and blinky lights. It's partly made from some recycled wood, metal and electronic components. All the circuitry is analogue and created entirely by myself, making this a rare and unique, one of a kind analogue synth.

Features
3 x VCOs, square and triangle waveforms, VCO3 has a switch to change between square/triangle or pulse/saw.
1 x VCF
1 x Envelope generator (AHR - Attack Hold Release, activated by big red button)
CV inputs: for VCO3, VCF
Gate input: for envelope
Meter: displays envelope level. Note- meter is larger than standard meter size!
Red glowing tube: displays VCF CV level
Small orange LED: indicates VCO3 CV level

Technical description of operation
The VCOs can be operated at sub-audio levels, acting as LFOs. The envelope is AHR (Attack Hold Release) with Attack and Release time controls and a button to activate it. The VCOs are connected in the cacophonic configuration (diagram below) which, by itself, has vast potential; each VCO affects the next in the loop creating mutating infinate loops of analogue chaos! But there's more; Each VCO can be re-routed into either the signal input or CV input of the VCF, simultaneously, so you could play a 3 note chord or use one VCO to control the cutoff of the filter and the other two as audio inputs or any combination you want!
The filter can also be pushed into some slight soft distortion by sending all the VCOs into the signal input with the level controls turned up to maximum volume.

Maximum voltage range for all inputs: 0V to 10V
CV inputs: 0V to 10V
Gate input: low/inactive range is between 0V to 2V, high/active is between 2V to 10V.
Some protection against over-voltage is included but should be avoided."

Roland Juno 106 with Original Box

"The keyboard is in near MINT condition both cosmetically and functionally and comes in the Original Roland factory box with packing. This synthesizer was fully serviced by SynthSpa where they either restored or replaced all the voice chips and waveform chips. This is an absolutely necessary service when owning this model Juno. The service also included replacing the AC jack with a 3 prong outlet, replaced the old battery with user replaceable batteries, reloading of all the factory programs, replaced any intermittent switches, and a full cleaning of all slider controls, pots and switches. This synthesizer looks as good as it sounds with no noticeable scratches, all switches intact with no missing slide caps, and all keys in perfect condition with no chips or scratches. This is the 117V U.S version keyboard. Included with this great synthesizer is the AC power cord, Original owners manual, Midi manual, a CD with additional program patches and files all packed in the Original Roland Factory box.."
