New Voodoo Design MultiModular MuchoDrum multiple modular analog drum synth demo1 DIY

Published on Dec 18, 2015 J Tracy

"Multimodular MuchoDrum is 4 analog drum synths in one box with a vacuum tube preamp AND 4 drum pads.
All elements (drums and preamp) have individual outs and can be connected or used separately. External triggers and sequencers can also be employed for each synthesizer.
This is the FIRST AUDIO demo test of ONE of the analog drum synths meant mainly to be toms etc"

via Etsy

"The MultiModular MuchoDrum is a analog modular drum synthesizer comprised of 4 semi independant analog drum synthesizers connected physically only via one single main electrolytic filtered and IC conditioned power circuit I designed and handmade. There are :
-Sindrum
-Percus.Sin
-AnaSin
-Sin.Bl

Each section is actually an indepedant drum synthesizer module. Sindrum is a modified DS8 clone, the Percus.Sin a modified DS7 clone, the AnaSin a modified version of Eric Archers simple single sound trigger and the last is a NoizeDrum circuit a designed. Each can be plugged in via modular eurorack patch cable (1/8" aka 3.5mm mono audio cable) to the tube preamp which I also designed and hand built. The pre uses the most popular audio tube the 12au7 and has options for gain and heat which..rather obviously..control the amount of power to the tube and heater element respectively, allowing the user to distort or push the drum sound and really give it some grit or simply a touch of character. The modules vary from the widely variable first to the last two which allow user to vary only the harmonic signature and tone basically.
There are 4 piezoelectronic pads which can also be used to trigger each synth on the opposite side of the suitcase from the controls and patch jacks. CV in jacks also allow use of sequencers or an outside drum machine, computer, etc
The wooden suitcase protects and allows easy portability and use.
Very cool unit.
I only made 2 and am not selling the other, so there is only the one in existence. It is completely handmade in the USA and true analog and unique.
information on DS7/8's is widespread and available all over the web as well as examples of the sound on youtube so its not so original in each sound, just the combo, the package and the potential being different in totality and modified without huge variation in the individual units.
Examples of preamps potential sound can be found in guitar pedals and amps which employ the 12au7 tube extensively."

New 2015 BugBrand BoardWeevil

The audio demo went up on Tuesday. We now have details on the new BoardWeevil.

via BugBrand:

"Out of production since 2012, one of the BugBrand classics resurfaces afresh for regular production - reconfigured and more powerful than ever, the Board Weevil marries the chaos of the Weevil sonic heart with a powerful Filter to create a truly portable and immersive sonic world.

On the left we have the heart of the Weevil - three lofi Squarewave Oscillators with Pitch dials and 3-way Rate switches. Osc1 can be controlled by an LDR light-sensor, while Oscs 2 & 3 can be synchronised to either of the other oscillators. The Oscs are combined through two quasi Ring-Modulators with blendable Balance control. Power starvation, with LDR control and droopy Stable switch, sends the Weevil core into hedonistic haywires, while a selection of Body Contact points allow tactile play, bridging signals in unexpected battles.

On the right is the State Variable Filter with Resonance up to Self-Oscillation - the Cutoff Frequency can be swept over the full audio range and modulated via the FMod dial from any of the 3 Oscs. The Input Drive can be adjusted down to silence, allowing signals to be jumped over into the Filter Node Body Contact points, while the output can be swept from Low-Pass to High-Pass response.

Sonic output comes either from an transformer-isolated 1/4" Jack socket with Level control, or from an onboard Mini-Speaker with independent Level control - the character of Speaker output is notably different from the line output and allows go-anywhere Weeviling.

The Board Weevil is presented uncased with surface mount circuitry exposed on the underside and measures approx. 5 x 6". Power is from a 9V PP3 Battery (included).

One year parts warranty.

Price: £160 (+ VAT in EU -> £192 inc.) + Shipping"

Blowstudio Hornet and Hornet Pro - Introduction

Published on Nov 11, 2015 blowstudiouk

Blowstudio Hornet Walkthrough

"Get yours and please support the crowdfunder!
http://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/blowstud...
The Hornet and Hornet Pro are intuitive and playable digital theremins perfect for noise artists, improvising musicians and anyone interested in sound or performance."

Some additional info from the crowdfunder page:

"The Hornet is a synthesizer with gestural control. Every Hornet has a voice switch and a mode switch, as well as speed and decay controls, to give you loads of sounds to explore.

Its a kind of theremin - a musical instrument that you play by moving your hand above it in space. The Hornet uses the same method of gestural control as the original Theremin, an instrument designed by Russian inventor Lev Termen in the early 1900s. However the Hornet is digital and updates the idea with many more sound options and possibilities.

Hornet also comes in a Pro version, which adds CV/Gate inputs so you can control it from your analog sequencer and sync it to your computer as seen in the main video. You can control pitch, note length and speed, and temporarily override your sequence at any time by turning the speed dial or putting your hand in the sensor beam."

Vagabond Prototype First Wiggle

Published on Nov 25, 2015 Randy Piscione

"One of the people who attended the Toronto Sound Festival brought a prototype of a synth he had developed called the Vagabond. It is all analog, very small form factor and has some interesting features. He loaned it to me for a few days to see what I thought of it and I told him I would gladly buy the prototype. I hope he continues with its development."

TOCABASSKARP

Published on Nov 16, 2015 Peter B

Audio starts on left channel only. Peter B is the man behind ciat-lonbarde. I created a new Tocante channel for these. Click through for previous posts.

"Demonstrating three new Tocante instruments: Bass Thyris, Bass Bistab, and Karper, which is parallel microchips doing string synthesis in the Tocante scale."

Some additional info via Tocante:

"Zenert is a simple name, deriving from the source of its noise, a zener diode, and the spectral flavoring applied by a simple resonant circuit, the twin-t. Its operation diverges from the previous Tocante pieces, where finger-touch simply connected oscillator outputs to an amplifier. In Zenert, finger-touch injects the zener noise into the inputs of the flavoring circuits. So instead of a number of discrete symbols at its rim, Zenert has a band of copper tracing, scripted to mimic the waveform of noise. The inner nodes, for circuit bending on Thyris, Bistab and Phashi, are now the injection points for each resonance. The resonators on Zenert share the same tuning-by-capacitor scheme, establishing continuity with the previous ones. Thus Tocante shares a two-faced nature with its nemesis, Ieaskul F. Mobenthey; looking backward to previous designs for the general framework and manifesto, but looking forward to new ways to break out of the mold.

The Tocante line of musical instruments is "about" and "touching" the materials of electronics. Each touchpad represents a pitch according to industry "preferred numbers," chosen by old wartime engineers for non-musical purposes. Here they form a unique and haunting musical scale, not unlike that of a gamelan or the neutral intervals of Persian music. Beyond these base pitches, three golden sandrodes flank each touchpad; touching these androgynous nodes yields intermodulation, pitch and timbral shifts, and emergent chaotic masses. The instruments come in three flavors: thyris the triangle, bistab the square, and phashi the circle. The oscillators sound like a bowed string, a most powerful clarinet, and a howling serene whistle, respectively. Each responds to touch differently. Solar panels charge the onboard batteries, that power the oscillators and a speaker. They are the perfect self-contained instrument for nightly music at the campground."

Kinetik Laboratories Protean Prototype

Published on Oct 23, 2015 Kinetik Laboratories

"I made this to collect the short videos shot with the PROTEAN prototype. Delay and reverb effects widely used.

The PROTEAN Motion Texture Source is a compact device that incorporates three independent sound generators for the production of a wide variety of sonic environments with a ever changing expressive vitality.
All sound parameters can be modified through direct manipulation of the knobs allowing a direct, fast and intuitive performance.

The sound generators have complementary timbral characteristic covering all the frequency spectrum and may also be modulated by the two low frequency oscillators implemented in the circuit, generating hypnotic sounds which evolve over time.

Protean has three independent outputs, each with its own output level to allow further manipulation using external effects and may also be used in mono mode when in the needs of a reduced setup."

Captain Credible - Dead Cats EP Release as a Printed Circuitboard

What is Dead Cats generative EP? (and why is it?) Published on Sep 25, 2015 Captain Credible

Captain Credible wrote in to let us know about his upcoming "Dead Cats" EP (currently available for pre-order here). What makes this particular EP unique is that as a creator of electronic instruments, Captain Credible decided to release it as a printed circuitboard, with each one featuring a different version of the final track, "main.h". The track is actually generated by the circuit board (see the main.h SoundCloud embed below for an example). The board is Arduino based, and Captain Credible made the code available here.

"Captain Credible is an electronica artist based in Oslo. Known for his violently eccentric live performances and arsenal of homemade instruments, he plays angry electronic music influenced by punk and old video games. The Captain refers to his sounds as 'filthy drunk beats bathing in a lake of melting synthesizers and old Nintendo cartridges'.

October 2015 brings with it the release of the EP 'Dead Cats' on Metronomicon Audio. This is the first in a series of 3 printed circuitboards. Unlike a traditional EP, Dead Cats is different for every copy of the physical release. Alongside the 5 downloadable tracks, each circuit board generates its own version of the final track 'main.h' using your download code as its source of inspiration. Simply plug your headphones into the headphone jack and absorbe the harsh reality that is the robot takeover of the cultural market.

The release also marks a new liveset with hand crafted space-age, razor sharp instruments utilizing a unique system of visual feedback. Causing epileptic fits and temporary blindness to both audience and performer."

Atheus hand made Drone synthesizer.

Published on Sep 21, 2015 darkpoem9

One off drone synth from Atheus: "The electronic schematic is based on my trial and error! Basically it's six oscillators that interact with each other, and when you turn the pot near 3/4, distortion get on (they are connected to an opamp + cap). Finally you have a LPF and Resonance filter. As a sound artist I just want to share this 'Drone/synth' with our community."

Noise! is based on CMOS logic IC's.
The oscillator has four square wave generators that are gestuurt by klokdivider.
Thereafter, the different clock outputs are mixed and deformed to a semi tri-wave.
The result is Noise! But also evolving weird bleeps and creaks.
The synth is expandable to a modular system, where all the clock outputs can be patched to each other.
