Mixed-media sculpture and sound installations
March 26 – May 12, 2019
Reception: Saturday March 30, 4:40-6:30PM | Make Noise modular synthesizer performances by Walker Farrell, Meg Mulhearn, and Jake Pugh
"For Compose | Decompose, the fourth installment in the Penland Gallery’s Conversation series, Annand proposed showing her work alongside the instruments and music of Make Noise. Their conversation is about exploration within defined systems. Annand makes modular sculptural elements from cardboard and cast paper; Make Noise makes modular systems for electronic music composition. In both cases modularity is not about creating predictability, it’s about providing a framework in which to cast expression and, sometimes, disruption. In works like Entropic, Annand avoids the purity of mathematical tessellations. She opts to create arrangements that contain disorder, making them analogous to human lives in their unpredictability and the possibility of playfulness within constrained systems. Make Noise takes this concept further with Synthesizer for Two Coasts, a conceptual instrument that only plays Bach’s Invention No. 4 in D minor. However, even within this narrow scope the user can find expression by manipulating timbre and injecting random notes into the music. Their systems are not designed for traditional composition, but for the 'discovery of unfound sound.'"
"A little jam on the Falconiera fortress in Ustica. The fortress stands on the walls of the remaining part of the Falconiera volcano. It´s composed by two part. Half of the fortress is a natural ancient 3rd century b.c. roman settlement, with many rain tanks and storage points carved in volcanic rock. The other half is an artificial building, created in 1763 by the Borboni as a watch point against the pirates attacks ,as it has full view in every direction around the island. Originally armed with 4 cannons in the year 1780, it served as a shelter for the population in case of pirates attacks. the only cannon remaining has been found at sea in 1956, in the now named Cala Cannone after it."
"Shape sound with the world around you. Master your instrument, master Hikari ! The newest iteration in personal pocket synthesis! Two knobs to control volume & pitch, as well as a photocell to sense light (plays like a theremin) and a momentary button to engage. Each Hikari 2.0 is handmade in Philadelphia, PA - runs off a 9v battery with a built in 8ohm speaker. Also has a headphone jack for wandering about & line out recording."
"Fugue Machine is now compatible with iPhone and AUv3 MIDI. Plus, more scales and significant interface/usability refinements. https://apple.co/2WpotQZ 🙌

"CEM3340 based single VCO, precision analog, high quality, with HS+/-, SS1/2, LIN/EXP FM, and 5 independent waveform outputs : sine, triangle, ramp, square / PWM, sub.
Price: TBD
Availability: Stay tuned via VSL social media (IG, YT, FB or vintagesynthlab.com )
In this first demo video, we illustrate just how accurate our CEM3340 VCO design is. All analog, precision trim-pots, high quality ICs, high quality film caps and 0.1% resistors used in critical circuits ...even those areas that other designs overlook!)
RANGE switch: LFO-1; LFO-2; 64', 32', 16', 8', 4', 2'
CLUTCH switch: when yellow (default) allows RANGE switch to operate freely; when red (engaged) latches RANGE switch to current selection. Switch can be rotated without affecting VCO, until released (push of the CLUTCH switch again... i.e. toggles between both modes).
HARD SYNC features: Hard Sync +, Hard Sync can be engaged independently.
SOFT SYNC features: SS1 and SS2 mode allows negative sync signal to reset VCO (tri-core). SS2 mode is weaker, however both will allow the VCO to interact in interesting ways with ext mod sources (as seen in this video demo)."

"Tim Lillis has performed around the world with artists like Britney Spears, comedy legend Todd Glass, and the renowned vocal group The Platters.
Tim recently completed the Piece of Me tour with iconic pop artist Britney Spears. He has played in some of the most prominent venues worldwide such as the O2 Arena in London, Accor Hotels Arena in Paris, and the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, often to crowds of over 20,000.
After graduating from the Berklee College of Music, Tim produced a review show with his wife which was performed in several countries throughout Europe and Asia. They also released a holiday album which quickly garnered over 100,000 listens on Spotify.
Tim is a founding member of the band Extra Lives which recreates classic video game music in a live setting. We chatted with Tim on how he’s using Sequential instruments in his music"
"Propellerhead ReBirth (RB-338) Techno Micro Composer 'Believe the unbelievable' four page colour brochure from 1997.
Full disclosure - I'm a huuuuuge Reason fan. I have a great auto-load template set up that opens with two TBL3 303 emulators, and two Kongs - one with 808 sounds and one with 909 sounds. Great for when I'm on the road. Or in bed.
So, you can't be surprised that I was a huge ReBirth fan way back when as well."
"In this video I'm gonna show you how to setup a sample recording workflow in VCV Rack! I use this workflow while creating my own samples for the sample packs and for personal uses as well. I'm so happy to share these techniques with you guys."
