Buchla Tiptop 296T Demystified

"I must admit I made the same mistake twice. When I bought the Frap Tools fumana, I assumed it was like an EQ. I never really gelled with it. When I got the 296T, I even posted it was like an EQ. In this video, I knew the bands are resonant and colored. I posted a V1 a few days ago, but took it down. It was all about me not liking the 296T because it sounds thin and nasal. I tried all kinds of scenarios, added filters, etc, etc to compensate for the sound and in the end I concluded it's not suitable as an end-of-chain processor. But I wasn't enjoying myself at all and it was all over the video. You could get the impression the 296 wasn't any good. This is absolutely not the case.

This V2 is basically the same footage, but with a different attitude. While going through all of this, I realized the 296 is designed for vocoding and spectral transfers. Sure I knew all that, but knowledge alone doesn't make me wiser. It's the experience. I noticed that the frequency bands on the 296 focus on the vocal range. It will always sound like a vocoder, even without transferring colors and envelopes from sound A to sound B. I already made a 'robot voices' video with the Fumana and the 296, so I've linked it to this video.

"ARP + SNL: A piece of history revisted via an upcoming, much anticipated film and our ARP Pro Soloist! From d’ARP

This has been a secret that I’ve been waiting to release, and now it’s here! Back in February I received an email from a representative from SONY Pictures asking if I knew where they could rent an ARP Pro Soloist for their upcoming film Saturday Night due to be released soon. The movie, originally called SNL 1975, is about the first Saturday Night Live episode, and how it all came together. They wanted an authentic instrument to use when they depicted the late, great Billy Preston playing none other than the ARP Pro Soloist and singing 'Nothing from Nothing'.

First, how cool is that? The first musical act on SNL featured an ARP and amazing ARP artist upfront and center!

Second, yes, we had a wonderful ARP Pro Soloist coming to us from California. It was being tuned-up by the amazingly talented Alsún Ní Chasaide of SyntheticDreamscapes after a heavy-duty stint at NAMM during which people such as Stevie Wonder, Lamar Michell, Patrick Moraz and Dave Kerner gave it a spin!

After some finagling, we had it sent to Georgia where the filming took place and to my astonishment, this particular instrument was about to gain even MORE infamy… none other than the Grammy Award winning Jon Batiste was portraying Billy Preston! Talk about one instrument taking on powerful vibes!

The film is scheduled for a premier on Oct 11. We can’t wait!!! Meanwhile, our second favorite Pro Soloist (our first is my dad’s, of course) will be out in the public again in the next year. We believe the magic that musicians bring to the instruments is contagious, so catch the vibe and stay tuned! "This vintage synth was fully overhauled and serviced by my synth repair shop “Synth Tailor Electronics” here in the wonderful city of Columbus, Ohio.

Restoration/Overhaul details:

-All lilac/Matshusita electrolytic capacitors changed (over 100-these are known for leaking the electrolyte from the bottom side)

-Power Supply Rebuilt

-Entire synth disassembled and cleaned with ultrasonic cleaner. Keys polished and contacts cleaned.

-Corroded components/Op Amps replaced with NOS components

-Jacks+Switches+Sliders rebuilt and ran through ultrasonic cleaner.

-Full Calibration and Tuning

This synth has a few scratches and knicks, but not that bad. The worst is on the Left Hand controller section, something was dropped by the Pitch slider and has a small crack. It doesn’t affect the slider or functionality-it’s just a minor cosmetic blemish."
