Ebb and flood: a modular bio-modeling of the tide

video upload by Electrum Modular

"Tides and music have a lot in common. Hydrographers decompose tides into their “harmonic” constituents and investigate how ocean basins 'resonate' with certain oscillations, while anthropologists and historians explore how tides have shaped the “rhythms” of social existence (Ancient Hawaiians, for instance, synchronized their daily lives to the tides by singing chants to the moon).

In this video, I recreate some of the complex forces behind the tides, by using precisely-calibrated oscillators, adders, and other modules. I then use this 'bio-model' to drive two musical patches – the first in VCV Rack, the second in Eurorack.

0:00 Patch 1: Harmony of the Tides (VCV Rack)
4:10 Patch 2: Lunisolar voices (VCV Rack + Eurorack)

A few books were useful (and inspiring) for this project:
Jonathan White, Tides: The Science and Spirit of the Ocean (2017); Rachel Carson’s classics, The Sea Around Us (1951) and The Edge of the Sea (1955); and Paul Schureman, Manual of Harmonic Analysis and Prediction of Tides (1958)

Casio VZ-1 EXTERNAL PHASE mode

video upload by Collector Current

"The Casio VZ-1 lets you combine oscillators into complex sound generators using "EXTERNAL PHASE" mode. There are many possible combinations; in this video we only look at 4 oscillators and combinations of MIX and PHASE mode.

Supercritical Redshift 6 Review

video upload by Molten Music Technology

"Reshift 6 is a remarkable 6-voice analogue synthesizer with up to 16 oscillators per voice, stacked or unstacked, unison, polyphonic and paraphonic multitimbral synth machine. There are some alarming holes in the intended feature set, but Supercritical are certainly onto something with the Demon Core Oscillators.

Supercritical sent me the Redshift 6 for review but have no say over the content."

The Massive Sound Of The Logan Vocal Synth

video upload by HAINBACH

"The Logan Vocal Synth is the most massive Italian synth I have encountered, both in size and sound. It combines no less than three of Logan's solo keyboards and adds a monophonic synth. I got to play it at Museo del Synth Marchigiano with my friend ‪@LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER‬ . If you want to get a taste of its sound, I have made a Decent Sampler instrument of the "A" voice that is available on my Patreon for all members, including the free tier: / hainbach

Pics of the inside below.

"Fully tested and ready to play those "real bass" sounds you've been looking for! Unit has two EPROMS installed; "SNAPPY" and 'PICK RW JAZZ 2' as shown.

Systems used the 'Real Bass In A Box' slogan for their advertising of this player due to the fact that it has "real" and not synthesized bass sounds. The MIDI Bass produces the exact sound of acoustic and electric basses and boasted some of the most popular bass sounds of its time. The included library of sounds had everything from Slapped & Popped Funk Bass, Flat Picked Roundwound Jazz Bass, Stand-Up Acoustic Bass, Bowed Bass, and much more. 360 Systems also praised the realism of the MIDI Bass as it is touch-sensitive, follows pitch bends, and responds to MIDI patch changes. As a result, it was marketed as the natural complement to digital drum machines and MIDI sequencer/synthesizer systems."
