Two Vintage Moog Sonic Sixes

One via this Reverb listing, also on eBay

2nd via this Reverb listing, also on eBay

Descriptions follow.

1st Sonic Six: "The Moog Sonic Six is a rare, portable analog synthesizer with classic Moog tone and ladder filter, featuring dual VCOs, sample-and-hold, ring modulation, and a built-in speaker—all housed in a rugged suitcase-style design perfect for studio or stage. Its unique sound-shaping capabilities including X/Y modulation, and vintage character make it a prized collector’s piece and a powerful tool for experimental or classic analog synthesis. While this synthesizer is often offered by sellers at a "high on crack" price, I am pleased to offer this one for less than half of what some delusional synth dealers are trying to get for it.

The synthesizer is in good condition, but the original "Moog" logo sticker on the outside was peeled off. The power switch does not illuminate when the synthesizer is powered on. The synthesizer uses a standard IEC power cord, and one will be included. Please see photos.

This Moog Sonic Six has been serviced by Synthchaser in August 2025. Work done included:

Cleaned switches, pots and sliders
Refurbished keybed - new bushings, cleaned bus bars & contacts
Tuned & Calibrated Synthesizer"

2nd Sonic Six: "This vintage Moog Sonic Six Suitcase Analog Synthesizer powers on and makes sound, but is being offered as-is at a discount due to cosmetic and functional issues. The A, X, and Y oscillators and the Moog Ladder filter appear to be working. This can be a great opportunity for someone willing to put a little work in to get this rare synthesizer below market. The synth is being sold as-is for parts or repair, with no returns.

Please see this video showing the functional status of the synthesizer. : [video above]

Issues I noticed (you may find other issues, but the synthesizer is still being sold as-is with no returns):

Cosmetic: A power cord has been hardwired to this unit in place of the power inlet. The exterior of the case is in rough looking condition and some screws are missing and things feel loose. The synthesizer is missing all knobs and switch caps. Some of the keys are stained. 2 rubber feet are missing, so the case needs something behind it to stay open when in use.

Functional: Oscillator B appears to be dead. The ring modulator appears to not be working (perhaps due to oscillator B not working, ring mod was not tested with external input). Key contacts are dirty and not working well, bushings need to be replaced. The contour generator appears to be broken. The Contour/Pitch Control pot for the filter was replaced with a pot that doesn't extend fully through the panel, so you can't use it. Pots, sliders and switches need cleaning. Calibration needed."

Emulator II purportedly played by Brent Mydland of the Grateful Dead

"This Emulator II has been lovingly refurbished and brought back from the Dead (quite literally!)

This particular unit has a storied alleged past that I would implore you to read up on the Mystery Circuits webpage.

I purchased this off eBay about 7 years ago in non-working condition from a seller who had bought it locally from an estate sale in California some years before. I had missed the chance to buy one while they were still somewhat affordable, and this was my chance to get my hands on one. There were a couple of low quality photos included in the listing, but from what I saw it was an Emulator II unit being sold for parts/non-working that I thought there might be a possible chance we could get it up and working again.

I received the unit and it absolutely had seen better days. There was partially disintegrated black foam from a touring case scattered in openings, it was missing it's floppy drive. That's when I notice a Dead Head sticker on the back of the unit. My immediate reaction was to remove it, as my synth heroes all played these: Depeche, Pet Shop, New Order, etc. Why would anyone associate an Emulator sampler with the Grateful Dead? Before I proceeded to remove the sticker I did a quick online search. Faamous Emulator II players...Brent Mydland of the Grateful Dead!? And there was a photo...NO WAY! I stared at that photo, it was awfully close. The sticker placement, the serial number placement. This is way too close of a resemblance. Long story short my tech Mike Walters out of Chapel Hill NC reached out to the Dead's synth tech and did as much research as we could. The conclusion was ultimately inconclusive with a wink wink from Bob and the rest of the Dead crew.

Fast forward to 2021 and there is an auction for Dead memorabilia and instruments. Brent's Stage Used Emulator II is now up for auction. This should dispel any questions, we must not have the unit. But wait! After closer examination- there's some odd sticker placements and the serial number and FCC sticker are considerably further away then the photos of Brent playing his stage used Emulator. My working opinion is the auctioned off unit was likely a backup unit.

Modernized and retrofitted with a SD floppy emulator and new LCD backlight. We kept the original overlay (which is starting to peel in flake in certain areas) but can include a replacement overlay if you so desire. The outer casing has seen life outside of a studio and does show some wear."

"Estate sale, purchase from the family of the original owner

Very nice cosmetic condition. This was a well-kept, and highly appreciated unit by the original owner.

I am not a Synth player, but I have plugged the unit it, and tested it out. The keys, knobs, lights ect, and appear to react to adjustment/manipulation. But I cannot say for certain if all components function as intended.

I would advise having this Synth gone over by a skilled tech on arrival. There is no such tech in my area, so I will leave that to the new buyer."

"This baby has had a full overhaul. Completely recapped from start to end, not just the electrolytics but all the tropical fish caps too as they were starting to crack with age. Keyboard has been completely re-bushed, new battery installed, swathes of old logic ICs replaced (everything socketed) This was a 6 voice model, but has been fitted with an additional 2 voice cards from RosenSound to make it a full 8 Voice. Fabulous Encore electronics MIDI kit is installed. ORIGINAL Service manual AND USER Manual included. Every single aspect of this timeless classic has been gone over, she's a beauty. I'm happy to provide a video demonstration or answer any questions you may have.

This one will also inadvertently help out the community forever more.. During the restoration, it was displaying some janky weirdness that we couldn't get our head around for months. (turned out to just be bit rot in the eprom) We had been searching for the original diagnostic eprom for a long time and never found it, but the awesome Bob Grieb of Tauntek worked with us and he actually wrote an entire test suite to replicate the diagnostic software from scratch. He's now made that free to the public also! just search Tauntek up on the web to find it.

I truly believe you won't find a better OB-X on the market today."

"Moog One, Nord Lead & Two Cassette Players

A free-tempo soundscape where slow-moving synth pads flow beneath taped piano phrases, birdsong and processed radio hiss.

‪@MoogSynthesizers‬ Moog One – plays the pad harmonies.

‪@NordKeyboards‬ Nord Lead – performs improvised phrases, drenched in delay from a Specular Tempus.

Cassettes – two portable decks replay field-recorded ambience and a one-minute piano loop.

‪@KOMAelektronik‬ Field Kit – acts as the mixer, taking the cassette signals plus its own AM/FM radio. The AUX send feeds a ‪@KORG_INC‬ monotron DELAY for extra filtered echoes."

SUPERBOOTH 26 Set for May 7 - 9, 2026

Press release follows:

Berlin, the 6th of August 2025

Following the SUPERBOOTH25 in May of this year, the SUPERBOOTH BERLIN is excited to be able to confirm the date for the next edition of the world’s largest trade fair and festival for electronic musical instruments:

The SUPERBOOTH26 will be happening from the 7th to the 9th of May 2026 at the FEZ-Berlin.

The 2026 date will also mark the ten year anniversary of the SUPERBOOTH as an independent festival and trade fair for electronic musical instruments — all the
more reason to celebrate!

Reflecting back on this year’s SUPERBOOTH25, the SUPERBOOTH is happy to report that this year’s edition was again a big success overall that brought together more guests and exhibitors than any previous SuperBooth, with over 8800 attendees, as well as 301 exhibitors from 31 countries celebrating the practice and culture of electronic musical instruments across three days.

With overwhelmingly positive feedback across the board from visitors, exhibitors and the press, the SUPERBOOTH’s singular combination of a trade fair and festival has once again proved its unique appeal and staying power, even beyond the world of hardware synthesizers, since software and pro audio — with 38 exhibitors from 9 countries in the pro audio area — have now also firmly established themselves at the SUPERBOOTH.
