Orange Circuit Bent Alesis HR-16 w/ Pitch and LED patch grid

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. via this auction (video below)
"This item is an Alesis HR-16 that has been custom painted and modified by James Gramling of Class A Electronics aka Diabolical Devices. It features the Diabolical Devices original LED patch grid and pitch modification. When no modifications are activated this machine will act like a regular HR-16.

Modifications:

Pitch/CLK speed adjust: This modification is by-passable and affects all drum sounds but NOT the tempo. It works by adjusting the clock speed the sampled sounds are playing back at and at lower clock speeds has a bit reduction effect. Led indicates pitch control status.

LED Patch Grid: This is similar to our typical Circuit-Bending ROM interface but requires only a single LED patch pin to link two bending points. The LED falshes different colors and reacts to the ROM data present at that location. Multiple pins can be used at once. This item includes (4) LED patch pins.

This item comes with 9 VAC Power supply (US customers only) and (4) LED patch pins. International shipping is $55 worldwide."

Both modifications are completely by-passably and this machine will act as a stock HR-16 if desired. This machine has been professionally modified by Diabolical Devices aka Class A Electronics. Comes with (4) LED patch pins and power adapter (US/120vac only, international buyers will need standard 9vac 1 amp adapter). Please note the discolored buttons this is from age, otherwise decent physical condition."

Squidfanny HR-16 Groove-Modulator Drum Machine

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

Video previously posted here.

"Very special GROOVE-MODULATOR Drum Machine
Circuit Bent, and then some.......

Based on a Very Modified HR-16 Drum Machine, this instrument has been beautifully Restored, Circuit Bent, Upgraded, Retro-fitted with a fully patchable Analog Step-Sequencer & Custom Acid ROMs which transform the machine into unique and powerful Techno-Glitch Synthesizer unlike any other...

This machine's capable of producing an astonishing array of mindbending Electronic sounds, Phat Beats, Amen Loops, Synth Effects, Computer Speech and even complex Modulating Bass-Lines...

Not to mention of course, an arsenal of rich & Dynamic sounding digital Glitch effects, which can only be acheived by quality circuit bent gear.

This HR-16 now contains the latest O.S. and the Alesis 'Electronic' ROMs from the Black version of the HR-16, which (in my opinion) are far superior to the original acoustic kit. The pads & buttons are all clean and very responsive, and the Red LED lights have been replaced with beautiful Blue, Green & Purple LEDs. Custom chrome knobs & metal washers are used along with bi-colour blue / Green LED lights to indicate the various new functions of this very unique machine.

This machine can operate as a standard 'stock' HR-16 drum machine if required, with no functions affected."

Squidfanny - 'GROOVE MODULATOR' Alesis HR-16 Drum MAchine (March 2012)

YouTube Uploaded by squidfanny on Mar 19, 2012

squidfanny on eBay

"Another mind bending beat-machine, similar to my previous HR-16, but this one uses SONODROME's 555 Envelope Generator circuit to provide responsive pitch envelope with my sequencer mod.

First part of the demo using the original Alesis ROM to show off the Ring Mods, Sequencer, Pitch Mods & Envelope Generator

Second Part (3:20) Having some fun screwing around with some techno beats from the custom ROMs.

Third part tripping out with some Casio Bleeps and abstract beats.

See the response video for a more detailed excursion into the realms of twisted HR-16's.

So -
This machine's been beautifully restored, circuit bent, upgraded with a syncronized Analog Step Sequencer and custom ROMs which transform the humble 1980's Drum Machine into a furious techno acid groove machine, with audio twisting powers unlike any conventional audio device. Thus I name thee +GROOVE MODULATOR+ Bringer of twisted beats.

Thanks again to Justin (Burnkit2600) & Al (Ex-Fade) for continued help and kind assistance with this epic project :)
Also thanks to SONODROME for sharing the 555 Envelope circuit - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aN6MaJHQh0 [posted here]

Long live Old-Skool...."

Squidfanny - 'Rhythm Modulator' Alesis HR-16 Drum Machine (Jan 2012)

YouTube Uploaded by squidfanny on Jan 26, 2012

squidfanny on eBay

"RHYTHM MODULATOR Techno Groove Acid machine.... Built around an Alesis HR-16 Drum Machine, which has been retro-fitted with an integrated Step Sequencer, with Pitch Mods, Killer Glitch and (Slightly Dodgy) Custom ROMs with 'nuff Old Skool Beats and Bass.

Sequencer is synced to the beat of the machine and is fully patchable, for programing complex tempo synced Glitches, beat swapping & effects.
Program the sequencer to twist and modulate the sample pitch, thus adding groove and expression to loops and rhythms....All tempo synced and with realtime modulation knobs and Decay control. Cool, eh?

See later part of vid for more in-depth look at the sequencer mod.

This machine contains the original Alesis 'electronic' ROMS and also my own (Slightly dodgy) custom Rom. It still has a few bugs, mainly quiet 'clicks' at the end of the samples when pitching down. Also some noise generated from the compression process, but this IS an ongoing project...

Thanks to EX-FADE and also BURNKIT2600 for assistance with this project."

2023/06 - Norns Dub

video upload by Stereoping

"Summer tunes warmup. The Monome Norns running the beautiful 'RAINDROPS' script is sent through a DIY-PCB Juno-6 Chorus with Stereo-mod. The Norns is intentionally not temposynced and accompanied by a modded Alesis HR-16 which makes funny things when one of the Voice Eproms is removed. The HR-16's audio runs through a Yamaha CS-5 lowpass into a DIY Axoloti-based effects unit with lots of knobs for realtime tweaking Reverb/Delay and a little granulizer. The HR-16's midiclock drives a Volca Drum with Midi-Out-mod. The Volca's sequencer's Midinotes (incl. probablitiy and ratchetings) are converted by a little DIY Midi-box into the suitable notes for the Solin8 (starting at 3:10), a cheap 8bit-glitch teensy-based WAV-Drumsounds-Player with downsampling faders. Squidfanny - Circuit Bent ALESIS HR-16 & Friends (December 2012)

Published on Dec 28, 2012 by squidfanny

"Mods on this HR-16 include a big metal REVERSE button & a Clock Output suitable for syncing a MONOTRIBE.

Other machines are - ANALOG ANTI-DRUM, KAWAI R-50 and a MONOTRIBE v2.
Monotribe is synced with clock-output from the HR-16, Kawai R50 is piped through the Monotribes VCF input.

Recorded late at night using cheap headphones - sorry for bad levels."

Kawaii K4 and HR-16 resurrected

Mickael from Quebec, Canada sent me a couple of shots from his Kawai K4 and HR-16. The buttons on each began to die, so he had them fitted with heavy duty switches. Interesting. Title link takes you to a bigger shot of the Kawaii K4 below and the Alesis HR-16. You can also check out his site for some more shots and samples of his music.

Alesis HR-16:B Demo Song & Sony VX-2000 Demo Mode

YouTube via zibbybone | February 17, 2011 |

"Here's the internal demo song for the Alesis HR-16:B. To try to "spice up" this boring video, I put my VX-2000 into "Store Demo Mode" which showcases some of its built-in digital effects. The video is still boring, but at least it gives you an idea of this machine's "aggressive" sounds from 1989. My appologies for the loose audio connection in a couple of spots. Not significant enough for me to re-shoot. Enjoy!"

Oddball Alesis Display Module 6 Ch Audio Switcher?

via this auction
Anyone familiar with this one?
"This auction is for an oddball Alesis project that was probably for a NAMM show or maybe some other demo environment. It would be great for a store or other place where you need to switch between up to 6 audio inputs for comparison.

It appears to be a 6 input stereo audio switcher. Please note that the description comes from my inspection of the board and does not imply that I really know what this is or where it came from! ;-)

The unit has what appears to be 6 stereo inputs on 1/4" TRS jacks and 1 stereo output on a L/R pair of 1/4" jacks. There are actually places on the board for two more stereo audio inputs, but I imagine you'd have to hack the firmware to make it work. There are also two headphone outputs with volume control. Most of the audio path is TL084 with a couple of NE5532's thrown in for good measure. The switching is done with relays. I can hear them switching, but have not actually hooked up any audio level signals to the unit. The unit has a 2 line by 16 character back-lit LCD display (with contrast pot) that shows the current selection. Selection is made via a pair of up/down switches.
Finally, the auction includes a 9v AC adapter typical of Alesis products (of that time). The display cycles the following 6 items:

- Alesis QS7
- Alesis QSR
- Alesis DM5
- Alesis NanoSynth
- Alesis NanoPiano
- Alesis NanoBass

But of course you can plug anything in you want.

The unit does not have a case, but I will pack it well so that it survives shipping. The board uses an 8031 CPU like in the HR-16 and MMT8 families and it has an external EPROM. This would allow you to hack the unit quite easily if you are experienced in writing code or reverse engineering. The unit would be great fun for a hacker or ex-Alesis employee."
