Something New From Clavia / Nord Keyboards Coming to Musikmesse

via Nord Keyboards: "Wednesday March 21th at 10.00am the 2012 Musikmesse opens in Frankfurt! The Nord Crew will be there and as always there will be something new to try out..."

Click the pic and look at the red box he's resting his hand on. My first thought was the new nord drum presented at NAMM 2012, but if you look at the back of it in this post, you'll see it's fully black. This one is red. Along with the new nord drum at NAMM, Clavia showed the new Nord Piano 2, and C2D Combo Organ, none of which this appears to be. So, a small red box. My dream? A new affordable fully polyphonic micro-modular with iPad editor for performance editing and software editor for PC/Mac/Linux. They could repackage the DSP in the G2 rack with the existing engine and put resources into the editor. I can always dream...

Update: Consensus in the comments is that it's actually the wood side panel of a keyboard standing on it's side. It's painted red like other Clavia keyboards. Note none of the Lead and Wave line of synths from Clavia have had wood end caps, so if this is a new synth, it would be a departure from that.

Update: Looks like it will be the Electro 4D. You can find the announcement here.

NAMM: Clavia Announces The Nord Stage 2

"Nord Keyboards are proud to announce the Nord Stage 2 Series featuring our latest sound generation technology in the Piano, Organ and Synthesizer sections.
[click the image for a larger shot]

0111 Nord Stage 2 panel

The Piano section includes String Resonance, Dynamic Pedal Noise, and a completely user-replaceable piano memory, twice the size of Nord Stage EX, compatible with the free of charge Nord v5 Piano library.

The Organ section features the tonewheel and transistor organ modeling of the C2 Organ together with a newly developed rotary speaker model.

The Synthesizer section includes an arpeggiator and the Nord sample playback functionality with a memory size storing 120 sounds from the Nord Sample Library including Mellotron and Chamberlin samples. In addition, Nord Stage 2 users can also create their own samples by mapping sound files in .wav format with the Nord sample editor. The genes of the Nord Wave brings analog-style and digital waveforms as well as FM synthesis.

Additional new features include MIDI over USB, monitor input, midi sync for the global master clock, and master clock sync for LFO, arpeggiator, and delay.

With the performing musician in mind the control panel gives immediate access to all key functions and instant visibility of all settings. Single function controls and dedicated selectors make for exceptional ease-of-use.

The Nord Stage 2 is handmade in Stockholm, Sweden by Clavia DMI and is scheduled to ship in February 2011."

Update: NAMM: Nord Stage 2 - New Pics and Info

"There is a new Nord Flagship instrument on the horizon."

"The Stage 2 is compatible with the huge and free Nord Sample Library. The powerful new synthesizer engine is built from the DNA of the famous Nord Wave. Capable of classic analogue synthesis, three operator FM synthesis and Wavetable synthesis.

The Nord Sample Library not only give Stage 2 owners access to the huge free library of world-class sounds, including the famous vintage Mellotron and Chamberlin samples, but thanks to the included Nord Sample Editor for Mac and PC, allows user-created samples to be loaded into the instrument and thus opening up a whole new creative world of sound.

It is over ten years since we made our first digital model of a tonewheel organ. The Stage 2's dedicated organ section now features our third generation B3 Organ model as found in the acclaimed Nord C2 and an improved Rotary model.

The rear panel with the USB connector that also carries MIDI information and the Monitor Input for playing along to your favorite music.

Here is the Piano section with the Acoustics controls, for the String Resonance, the Pedal Noise and the new Selectable Release feature. When Release is activated pianos use a slightly longer release, which is more suitable for legato playing. This important feature reflects adjusting the damper tension in an acoustic or an electromechanical instrument.

The Pedal Noise feature from the Nord Piano is available in the Nord Stage 2 if the optional Nord Triple Pedal is used.

The Piano section has a memory of 500 Megabytes. Each and every Piano sound in the instrument is replaceable with any piano sound from the Nord Piano Library.

The Synth section also features a new Arpeggiator that can be synchronized to the Stage 2 Master Clock for perfect timing with elements of the Stage 2 including the rate of effects and the delay time. The Master Clock tempo can be set numerically, ''tapped'' on the tap button or set by incoming MIDI Clock.

There are 400 Programs (recent change) in the Nord Stage 2 - These are organized in 4 Banks with 20 Pages, with 5 programs in each Page. There are 5 Live Memories that automatically saves all the settings. And a programmable Transpose.

The Effect section sports a new member: the Vibe. This is modelled from a desirable foot pedal and is a great addition to the Stage 2's sonic arsenal.

The production of the Nord Stage 2 will begin in February, 2011.

Every Stage 2 will be delivered with both the Nord Piano and the Nord Sample DVDs. These two expanding Libraries represents more than 6.5 Gigabytes of sounds at the moment. "

NAMM & NOT NAMM - New Products on the Synth Front

Well, it's that time of year again. Keep an eye out on the NAMM label (added to top right menu) for everything NAMM and more. More in that anything new will get the label whether it's shown at NAMM or not. It's about new gear. Updates in this post will be preceded in red. Some already in below. See "The NAMM List!" link under the Twitter, Facebook, and RSS labels on top of the right to get back to this post later.

(A note on the top site menus: I removed the iPhone and iPad labels as they go up in posts every day now so you can find them there. eBay links are on the right, so I removed it as well.)

That said, the following are some of the things to look out for. If you have any NAMM info feel free to comment and/or send it in. If I missed anything, let me know! If you are going to NAMM, feel free to send pics and video in.

"I thought your readers could be interested that there's
such a nice place in Munich for synths.. it's not exactly Five G but
then they don't have to fly to Japan for it.. :)

Hi guys,
Last Saturday I have visited the music shop Musikhaus Hieber-Lindberg
in Munich, Germany. I was tipped off by Florian, who said it could be
interesting. You can find their website at

To the second power

YouTube via attorks — May 30, 2010

"On this occasion I am accompanied by my son Mark (Channel Metalrazor02 on YouTube) who plays the Ibanez GRG 270 electric guitar using an EBow. The EBow produces a infinite sustain for a guitar string by oscillating a magnetic field causing the string to vibrate. The electric guitar uses a Boss ME-50 Guitar Multiple Effects board. Mark wanted to accompany me if he was not filmed so that's why you don't see him.

The Nodal software sequencer is were it all starts doing the bass sequence performed by the Creamware MiniMax ASB. The Doepfer MAQ16/3 sequencer and the Zoom RhythmTrak RT-323 drum machine are MIDI synchronized from Nodal. The Synthesizers.com Q960 sequencer and Q962 sequential switch are shifted by gate signals from the MAQ16/3. Row 1 of the MAQ16/3 does a 4-step sequence and drives the Ian Fritz Teezer Through-Zero VCO which saw wave is fed to the Resonant LoPass Gate. Row 2 of the MAQ16/3 does an 8-step sequence driving the self-built Modular. Solo's are performed on the Roland XP80 doing an organ sound and the Clavia Nord Lead 1. The chords are performed on the Waldorf Q Keyboard.

The full video of almost 14 minutes will be available on my website soon."

A modest theme

YouTube via attorks
"A more straightforward setup is used for this theme. The Doepfer MAQ16/3 has three 6-step sequences: row 1 controls the Synthesizers.com Modular which also uses the Blacet MiniWave as sound source, row 2 the self built Modular and row 3 controls the wave of the Blacet MiniWave (you can see this in the beginning of the video). The Mellotron flutes are performed by the Roland XP-80, the minimal melody is also performed on the Clavia Nord Lead 1 and some accompanying sounds come from the Waldorf Q keyboard. All in all a true modest theme."

A sliding theme

YouTube via attorks

"I wanted to show off with a second hand Doepfer R2M ribbon controller I bought 2 days ago. I hope you excuse me for the odd false note because it is not easy to get the pitch right. I have put some marks with a pencil on the side to have some guidance.

In the beginning you hear the 8-step sequences from the self-built Modular and the Creamware MiniMax ASB (not visible). After that the 3rd sequence is added which drives the Clavia Nord Lead 1 generating a brass-type sound. This is a 12-step sequence but the timing is different as for rows 1 and 2.

The Solina-like strings is produced by the Waldorf Q keyboard. The solo comes from the Synthesizers.com Modular which is driven by the CV1, CV2 and gate outputs from the Doepfer R2M. The CV1 is for the pitch and CV2 (pressure) is for the pulsewidth of the pulse wave. The bass in the last part also comes from the Nord Lead 1."

Looks like I posted this one already here.

An odd time signature theme

YouTube via attorks
"The time signature for this theme is 5/4 so its a little bit difficult to track the chords and the solo. You can see my head moving on the down beats in the solo. But it turned out well I think. The Waldorf sequencer has an 8 step sequence with 6 x 1/8 step-lengths and 2 x 1/4 step-lengths. The Doepfer MAQ16/3 has 10 step sequences on two rows driving the Synthesizers.com and the self-built Modular. The first odd note sequences comes from the self-built Modular, the second sequence from the Synthesizers.com and the third sequence from the Waldorf Q Keyboard. The Roland XP80 is currently on the keyboard stand because I have to practice some music to be played on a 50 year anniversary party together with some Tidal Wave members from some 30 years ago. The XP80 has the Vintage Keys card which contain some Mellotron sounds. The solo is played on the Clavia Nord Lead 1.
Notice you can see our dog Zoƫ in the mirrordoor behind me.
I had to shorten the video somewhat because of the YouTube limit of 10 minutes. The original video can be seen or downloaded from my website."

A screaming theme

YouTube via attorks

"A simple single 8 step sequence (c4 f3 c#4 f#3 f4 d3 c4 g3, tempo 80) drives the Synthesizers.com Modular. The Q150 transistor ladder filter is modulated with 2 MFM VCO's running a high frequency square wave on the 2 seperate frequency inputs on the Q150. SynthStrings are performed on the Clavia Nord Lead 1 (Chords Fm C Bbm Dm). The improvised screaming solo is performed by the Waldorf Q Keyboard. The Korg 900PS solo's are just the opposite of the Q's solo."

Musikmesse: Clavia Nord Wave OS 2

Clavia Nord Wave OS 2.02
"We are pleased to announce that the OS of the Nord Wave have been updated to version 2.02 that besides a few bugfixes, also includes some exciting new features: NEW FEATURES • The analog triangle and sawtooth waveforms are now shapeable. This provides you with extended harmonic control, and allows you also to create interesting results by modulating the shape. • 6 new waveform options have been added in the Osc 1 Misc category. These consist of 2 new noises, three new sine waves and 1 new pulse wave: • Misc n2 - Complementing the original noise is a new "narrow" noise band which gives it a pitched character. The Shape control allows you to dial in a timbre ranging from a wide band noise to a fluctuating sine wave. • Misc n3 - The metallic noise waveform produces a noisy signal with a bright metallic timbre. The timbre is created by a dense cloud of short pulses with carefully detuned frequency relations, creating clusters of high pitched partials in its audio spectrum. This type of noise is useful to create the metallic sounds made by acoustic cymbals and hihats. • Misc SO & SA - 2 shapeable sinus waveforms, one with the addition of odd numbered harmonics, and the other with both odd and even numbered. • Misc SS - A third sine wave, which is syncable. The Shape control sets the pitch of the "hidden" sync oscillator. • Misc PF - This pulse wave is of the "fixed" variety, the width is adjusted in absolute time values with the Shape control. This makes the width constant across the keyboard and results in a nice and rugged spectrum with fixed formants, similar in character to many acoustic instruments. • The number of FM categories for both Osc 1 & 2 have been almost doubled with the addition of 18 new, 3 operator FM algorithms. • The update also makes the Nord Wave compatible with the ever growing Nord Sample Library, and the Nord Sound Manager v5.x and Nord Sample Editor v2.x. This allows you to exchange samples with Nord Electro 3 users and to download lots of new sounds from the Nord Sample Library. BUG FIXES • Fixed an issue with Morphs getting sluggish during heavy load. • Improved Note On response time, the Wave is now reacting faster. • Fixed a rare issue where the master level could drop significantly. NORD SOUND MANAGER "

You might remember the NORD SOUND MANAGER from this post.
