Dirtywave M8 Demos by Avrilcadabra

videos by Avrilcadabra

Tutorial / DIY videos towards the end of the playlist. You can use the video controls to skip around.

Playlist:
1. Generative patch showing off Dirtywave M8 Macro Synth
A glimpse at some of the sounds from M8's Macrosynth engine.

The m8 has wavesynth, macrosynth, FM synth, sample and Midi
2. Dynamo ( Dirtywave M8 )
This is my new track Dynamo made entirely on the Dirtywave M8

The M8 creator Trash80 was kind enough to play my track on the fortnightly online meetup for the M8 using the real time 3d rendering that was used to make to m8 Demo video.

So with his blessing I have used it here to show my track. This track was made on M8 Headless using a Teensy 4.1. As I don't have a hardware M8 yet.

You can buy this track at https://avrilcadabra.bandcamp.com/rel...
3. Dirtywave M8 basic workflow ( making a small track )
Take a look at the basic workflow of making music on the M8 tracker.

Hi I got asked what the workflow is like on the M8, it's kind of too hard to do with subtitles alone, so I did a voice over on this one. I am used to filming hardware, so screen recording and microphones is not something I am experienced at. Can only get better from here.

I preloaded some instruments to make this video go faster.

This is M8 headless version running on a teensy 4.1
M8 Headless is free you just need a teensy 4.1
Learn about setting up M8 Headless here https://github.com/DirtyWave/M8Docs/b...
4. Dirtywave M8 Tutorial ( Wavesynth Deep Dive )
Lets go over wavesynth on the Dirtywave M8 and learn what everything does.

Wavesynth / WAVSYNTH is one of the synth engines in the Dirtywave M8 and it is my favourite one.
5. Dirtywave M8 hardware Unboxing
Lets check out the Dirtywave M8 hardware in this unboxing and demo.

I preordered the production version of the M8 when they first were available too and having been eagerly await for it, for months. During that time I have been using the headless software version a lot.

I had played with the M8 the day before so put it back in the box for this video, there was also some white packing paper in the box, not shown in his video as my cat took off with it, and the usb cable came in a plastic bag also if I remember correctly.

I wrote a fair few presets and my first Sid presets pack comes preinstalled on the M8, super happy to be able to do that. Since the production cards were finalized some time ago, I ended up making a tonne more presets. Which you can download here for free to put on your M8. https://www.dropbox.com/s/tt22qvn6o4v...

I did not mention in this video, but the M8 is class compliant USB audio and Midi, and also sends data to mirror it's display on a computer via a web app. so you can set up an external moniter on your computer and put the app on that window, then you can display M8 on a 4k tv, projector or CRT etc.
6. Dirtywave M8 - Connect to a bigger screen using M8WebDisplay
How to connect the M8 to a computer and 4k tv, projector or CRT

Today we are using the wonderful webdisplay created by DerkyJadex which is can found here https://derkyjadex.github.io/M8WebDis...

Just plug your M8 (or headless M8) into the usb on computer and it will appear on the web display. Worse case scenerio you have to select a serial com port in the ui on the webdisplay.

Video game mood music with Dirtywave M8 Tracker

video upload by Jay Hosking

"A full performance on the Dirtywave M8 Tracker, using its synths, sampler, sequencer, and effects.

At the end of August, I went on a trip, my first proper holiday in about ten years. I brought two small pieces of gear with me but used only one: the M8. I had expected to find the M8 too static or non-performative to be enjoyable, but I was drawn in by its fantastic sounding synthesizer designs, sampler with lots of editing and control, lush effects (reverb, delay, chorus), and workflow that led to new ideas. The M8 fits well in the hands, feels good to use, and has a great battery life. It's the perfect portable idea machine for me at the moment, easy enough to stash on any outing, and powerful enough that its sounds are inspiring.

This video isn't a 'jam' by any means, simply me pressing play and letting the M8 go. This is the M8's biggest drawback, in my opinion: it isn't conducive for live, dynamic performance. But that said, I imagine that I'll be using the M8 to create stems—it has a stem export feature—and then loading the stems into something more performative, like the Octatrack. It's a great little idea machine and gives me fodder for jams later.

If you're looking for a portable device for coming up with musical ideas, the M8 might be a good choice.

Thanks for listening.

The recording has EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

How to make some guitar lofi beats on the Dirtywave M8.

video upload by Avrilcadabra

"Workflow for making some lofi with guitar on the Dirtywave M8

#m8tracker

I guess this is intermediate skill level, I gloss over a few things most people familiar with the M8 should know, but feel free to ask in the comments if you need help with any of this.

My presets can be found here wowflutter (broken walkman preset) - https://www.dropbox.com/s/hk600odh69i... Avrilcadabra preset packs - https://www.dropbox.com/s/tt22qvn6o4v...

The M8 ships with some of my presets but I have made a truckload since the M8 was released."

Superbooth 22: Dirtywave - M8 Portable Tracker

video upload by sonicstate

"Tim from Dirtywave introduced the M8 Tracker telling us it was influenced by a Gameboy tracker called Little Sound DJ, and the pocket-sized beauty definitely appeals to the playful.

The M8 has 8 tracks, audio input and output, midi in and out, FM synthesis, stereo sampling that streams directly from SD card, a super sharp touch-screen, and built in effects. Surely that can't all fit into one pocket?

Dirtywave M8 Tracker available to preorder now. Shipping in July.

Price: 550 USD"

A/V Collab: Osmose, Dirtywave M8, Numa X GT

video upload by John C.S. Keston

Read more on AudioCookbook.org: https://audiocookbook.org/audiovisual...

"This is the first in a series of live audiovisual collaborations with Chris LeBlanc and Shawna Lee. The performance was captured at at the Lakely in the Oxbow Hotel, Eau Claire, Wisconsin (https://www.theoxbowhotel.com/lakely/) on September 30, 2023.

Chris and Shawna produced live visuals using their integrated, modular video synthesis systems as I performed. This as yet untitled piece is driven by morphing drums and sequences on the Dirtywave M8 tracker. I also live looped a Rhodes pattern on the Numa X Piano GT. The formant-filtered-voice-like-lead was played on the Osmose Expressive E.

I’m thrilled with the analog visuals that Chris and Shawna produced. The image above shows Shawna’s (left) and Chris’ (right) video systems. Please take a look at their Instagram feeds to see more of their work:

Omx-27 Midi Controller gets M8 Mode

video upload by Avrilcadabra

"The Omx-27 now has a dedicated M8 mode for the Dirtywave M8.

The OMX-27 is a cool open source midi controller that pairs really well with the M8 and now even more so.

Make sure your M8 has firmware 2.7.1 or higher.

I have not tested with headless version of M8, but everything but the oscilloscope mode should work (it is a hardware m8 only feature)"

Dirtywave M8 - "Gauntlet" [Nintendo Game Soundtrack Remix!]

video upload by Electronisounds Audio

"I made this all in one day.

If you don't already consider the Polyend Tracker a hi-tech 'toy', then how about playing NINTENDO GAMES on it?!? I think that qualifies it as a pretty serious toy! Hahaha

I loaded up the classic NES game, 'Gauntlet' and sampled the soundtrack into the Dirtywave M8 tracker. Then I chopped out a ton of bits from the soundtrack, programmed some drums with one-shots, added some chord stabs from the built in synths - and created this new, fun, silly soundtrack for the game - all inside of the M8.

I also sampled some vocal samples from the ORIGINAL arcade version of Gauntlet to add more character to the track."

A more spooky Super Mario 64 w/ dirtywave m8 (chiptune?)

video upload by Chris Hunt

"Playing in a grid is tough for me, but I'm having a blast learning the Dirtywave M8 workflow. It's really, really fun once the muscle memory starts kicking in. All music (synths) and FX (reverb) are from the M8 and recorded via USB. The 'strings' are FM, the drums Macrosythn, and the melodies a nice chiptune-y square wave.

00:00 FYI Mario - the house is haunted
00:12 killer piano
00:20 killer chairs
00:46 killer ghosts
01:20 killer eyeball
01:40 killer books

Shimmer-like reverb on a Yamaha QY70 (following @Avrilcadabra 's recipe), plus update on LMN-3

video upload by Floyd Steinberg

"A few days ago, @Avrilcadabra posted a rather ingenious video showing how to "fake" a shimmer reverb on the Dirtywave M8. You should watch it, it's short and to-the-point and it really deserves more views: [below]
In this video, I'm testing if the same ideas work on a Yamaha QY70 as well.
No table of contents today, but there's a demo at 4:36, and a short update on the LMN3 video at 6:00"

How to make lush Shimmer reverb on M8

video upload by Avrilcadabra

"If there's a will there's a way.

#m8tracker #dirtywave

Sorry this video is fast, I tried to make it slow, but not slow enough, I zoom around the M8 so quick from using it so much. , so I'll explain here.

If you have the current firmware you can quickly render any bit of a song.
Hold shift and option to select what you want to render then press Edit 3 times, select OK to render, M8 will auto load a sampler instrument and add the render (how neat)

My pattern was 4 phrases long, so I make a new chain on the song screen, add new phrase, in that phrase add a c-4 note, it will be the new rendered sample.

then I add three empty FE phrases to the chain, to pad it out, so the sample plays uninterrupted for 4 phrases long.

Next we apply the time stretch method to our instrument, set LENGTH to 00, PLAY to FWD LOOP, set LFO to LOOPST, set OSC to Ramp UP, TRG to RETRIG,and finally FRQ to whatever length your sample is, mine was 4 phrases so I select 40 (help text says this is 4 phrases), if your pattern you rendered was 1 phrase long, then set FRQ to 10 for example,

Tweak LENGTH till it sounds less crap, between 2-4 usually.

Now adjust your C-4 to be C-5, shimmers are pitch shifted reverb an octave higher than the original sound. Because we have applied the time stretch technique our render will still be in time an octave higher. (if you want to make submarine reverb set it to C-3, or add another chain on song screen and have submarine and shimmer together!?) Now turn the DRY to 00 on the render, turn the reverb to A0, now we will only hear the octave up reverb tail, now to delay the reverb tail we use the FX command DEL02, to delay the render by 2 ticks. Now it will sound pretty good.

The final step is to add reverb on your original pattern, it will then blend into the octave up render reverb to create a full sounding Shimmer. I own a strymon reverb pedal, so I've made this to sound as close to that as I can."

Generative M8 with Milkdrop and Raindrops

video upload by Avrilcadabra

"Generative music from the Dirtywave M8 with winamp visualizer

Hi everyone, if you caught my last stream I had this track running, but here is a proper video of it. I try to find a balance between random and musical.

#dirtywave #milkdrop

So random pitches are locked to scaled and lots of use of the SNG command to jump between islands of chains on the song screen. USB from the m8 is driving old school winamps milkydrop 2 visualizer.

I had the M8 audio going through raindrops bypassed, but turned it on and it sounded nice, so theres some sweetening from raindrops, was just set to 50ms delay so very short.

Here is an affiliate link to perfect circuit for the raindrops Dreadbox Raindrops - https://bit.ly/3iXXHjE
I have recently done a full review of demo of you should watch first if you are interested.

I have not put this generative track (I dont even have a name for it) on bandcamp, but if someone wants me to just drop a comment and I'll get onto it.

Out of Order ( M8 & C64 & OMX-27 )

video upload by Avrilcadabra

"Some sounds from the past with help from the future.

This track, I wanted to make my own breakbeat from scratch and resample it, stretch it etc to make it sound old and brutal. I also sampled some pinball sounds, slowed down pinball flippers etc, lot of sample manipulation going on with the M8. The weird arps and stuff are mostly from the M8, couple from the c64. I sampled the c64 into the m8.

Hope you enjoy the artistic flair of the video for some old school aesthetic.

Broken beats w/ Pikocore, Dirtywave M8, Roland J-6, TE TX-6

video upload by Arman Bohn

"More experiments with the pikocore. Random chord triggering sent from the M8 to the J-6. The Pikocore is synced to the J-6 which is clocked to the M8.

I’m syncing key changes to the random chords as well. I think I’ll continue down this path towards actual pseudo random song creation … so possibly more M8 + J-6 combos in the near future. The modulation options on the J-6 are nonexistent sound design is incredibly limited. I could use another mini synth instead, maybe the great conjunction, or the kasser arcade. but that would take more cord wrangling in the m-8."

This is the first post to feature the pikocore.
