Resonant filters on 80s Akai samplers | How to do it

video upload by Espen Kraft

"The early S-samplers from Akai did not have resonant filters, but by hooking them up to Akai synths at the time you could still achieve it. The individual voices from the sampler goes out a special connector at the back called "Voice out". All the 80s Akai samplers features this connector. With the appropriate cable you took the output here and connected it to the "Sampler In" on one of the Akai synths of the time.
The Akai AX60, AX73, VX90 and VX600 has these "Sampler In" ports at the back. The AX80 does not, just so you're aware. The AX80 was Akai's first synth and it preceded their first sampler, the S612 and is in many ways the odd one in their catalogue."

Drum replacement in the 80s | Akai S700 audio trigger input

video upload by Espen Kraft

"Use the audio trigger input of the Akai S700 or X7000 to trigger samples live from any external source. A great way of playing live or as we did in the 80s when we had to replace drums from analog tape."

Featuring the Isla Instruments S2400.

Akai S700 & S900 - MIDI sample dumps | tutorial + bonus S612

video upload by Espen Kraft

"In the 80s when samplers were cutting edge tech, it soon became useful to be able to transfer samples between them. The Midi protocol had a set of rules for this, that not all sampler manufacturers seemed to comply with. Akai was one of those brands. They did it ALMOST by protocol and as such Akai samplers would sometimes be hard to sample dump TO or FROM, from other brands.
Between two Akai samplers, no matter the model, things were ok, as I show in this video."

Akai S700 QD Emulator Install | Why?

video by Espen Kraft

"My Akai S700 has served me well, but the Quick Disk drive did not work anymore. As in most of these drives, it's the belt that has almost disintegrated over the years .
Since I already have a S612 and a working floppy drive for that I thought I'd just install a QD emulator this time, even if I really don't like to see emulators ruin the looks and original design of this 80s gear.
The install is simple enough, even if I probably dismantled my S700 more than I had too. ;-)
It works fine and now loading and saving is totally free of any mechanics that can fail, but the joy of using those QD floppies is also gone. You decide how you want to deal with YOUR broken drive. :D

I got the emulator here: [on eBay]
Or you can email Chris directly at: cpmagneticmedia@gmail.com"

Akai Factory Samples 1985 | Make a song with these!

Espen Kraft

"The Akai S612/700/7000 factory Quick Disk library samples. By today's standards quite limited, at least on paper. I go back and make a track with these sounds, just as I did 35 years ago.

Going back to 1985 is always fun. My first sampler was the Akai X7000, the keyboard version of the S700, which in turn was the follow-up to the S612 so to speak, and it's hard to describe the sensation we felt when we tried sampling for the first time, it was like the gates of heaven opening up. If you weren't there you'll never understand, but making this video and song took my somewhat back to that place. Just because these factory samples brings back so many memories."

Akai S612 - The first and best sampler Akai ever made - Demo/review/tutorial

Published on Dec 14, 2018 Espen Kraft

"When the Hi-Fi home system producer Akai entered the music tech/gear business with the Akai S612 sampler, and the Akai AX80 and AX60 back in 1985/86, no one new what to make of it. Not even Akai themselves. I don't think they knew how successfull their samplers would be in the years to come after this.
This was also the only sampler they'd ever produce that was in black.

The 612, in essence 6 delay lines with sampling functions, was streamlined the year later with the grey S700.
Both have a analog filter, non resonant, but where the S700 is a menu driven sampler, the S612 uses knobs and faders for adjusting parameters and that is very, fast, intiutive and simple. No Akai sampler for many years after the S612 did this.

Unfortunately it does not comply to the "standard" Midi Sample Dump protocol so with a fawlty Quick Disk drive like most of these has today, you have to use some old Atari or MAC to transfer sounds to and back from a computer. Or fix your quick disk system.

The demo track I start off with (Tell Me) is made entirely of sounds coming out of the S612. I've multi tracked it of course and additional effects are being used.
It has that 12-bit, slightly gritty sound I love."

Akai S700 Sampler - Pure magic for next to nothing!

Published on Nov 16, 2018 Espen Kraft

"My first sampler (Akai X7000) in module form. With one of the more warm and creamy analog filters of any sampler. Even if the filter is not resonant and even if the sampler has no ADSR envelopes, just a release, it has a nice deep low end and a magic sound to it.
It can be had for next to nothing these days and well worth picking up and use. In fact it should cost a lot more based on sound only.
I judge a samplers filter based on how it sound on a synth string type of sound so you'll hear no beats in this demo. ;-)"
