4/9/24 Metasonix S-2000 vacuum tube synthesizer + Korg SQ-10 sequencer & MS-02 + Roland RE-301

video upload by Cfpp0

"Finally, a Metasonix S-2000. For this lethargic elephant stroll, a Korg SQ-10 sequencer is sending 16 steps of Hz/v CV (channel A voltage out) to the S-2000 operators, while also triggering (converted by the Korg MS-02 interface) the S-2000 contour 1. The drive amount on Operator 1 and Operator 2 are incrementally increased and the fall and rise of contour 1 are also increased. Roland RE-301 tape echo is added via the Mackie Onyx 1640 mixer."

video upload by Cfpp0

"Another one from the end of February 2024. One oscillator is set to SEQ and the other to KBD, so you hear a droning note under an 8-step sequence from the onboard sequencer. At 1:48 I start playing some notes and you can hear the portamento. Mostly this video demonstrates the filters."

via this listing

"Insane. The Yamaha CS-30 is an animal. The filter, the oscillators, all those envelopes, all that modulation—it sounds amazing, wild. And it’s an ecosystem. Self contained, with its own sequencer, LFO, headphone output, keyboard; flip a switch to transpose your 8-step sequence, flip another to drone, drone, drone, flip a switch to change envelopes. But it also has external audio in to the filter, external control voltages in and out, sequencer pitch and gate out, and so on. So on! So on!

Solo leads, cellos, vocal formant and vowel, alien bells, whatever, it’s versatile.

It tracks Hz/v for all you Korg MS-10, 20, 50 folks, all you thyratron-loving Zerosum Inertia folks, Metasonix folks.

Very nice ergonomics. Good angle to the controls. Large knobs and faders.

This one has been around here for a few years, but had a problem with the keyboard glitching. It was just serviced and is now working great, plus it has been changed to operate on North American power."

PlayFader PlayMates - Oberheim OB-X8 via MIDI 🔥

video upload by Play All Day

"What’s going on here then? MIDI baby, yeah!
The cv outs are connected but they’re not in the mix. This is just MIDI - 909 sending MIDI transport into PlayFader and the @Oberheim OB-X8 being sequenced by PlayFader. Channel A controls filter cutoff while Channel B sequences, all via MIDI (PlayFader features a 3.5mm Type A connection).

MIDI is here!!! Along with other new features like buffer contents visualisation, channel mute, patch storage allowing up to 8 patches to be saved (includes all settings and buffer contents), Buchla 1.2v/oct and Korg Hz/oct scaling, channel copy and loads more.

Firmware updates are way ahead of schedule, so much so that we are behind on updating the Play Data guides and manuals.

Btw, the LED screen refresh rate doesn’t always match the camera capture rate which is why the LEDs might not always be consistent... maybe, but I'm clearly not a video expert... we’re getting a better camera really soon :)"

EPIC SYNTHESIZER MADE IN THE USSR. FORMANTA EMS-01

video upload by Alexander Obukhov

"The combined electro-musical instrument "FORMANTA EMS-01" integrates two instruments: a polyphonic organ and a monophonic synthesizer. It is designed for performing musical compositions of any genre and obtaining various sound effects for film scoring, theatrical performances, and studio recordings.

The organ features a five-octave keyboard, six fixed sound timbres, frequency vibrato with adjustable delay, decay adjustment, and a stereo phaser (common for both the organ and the synthesizer). The vibrato delay scheme only starts with each subsequent keypress after releasing the previously pressed keys. In "legato" play, the vibrato delay scheme does not activate.

The synthesizer includes:

A three-octave keyboard.
A modulator with modulating voltage supplied to the frequency modulator (FM), width modulator (WM), filter, and amplitude modulator (amplifier).
Generator 1, generator 2 – wide-range generators with various waveform oscillations.
Mixer for summing signals from generator 1, generator 2, noise generator, external source, and ring modulator.
Filter for dynamically and statically changing the spectrum of the summed signal from the mixer output.
Amplifier to impart characteristics typical of various signal envelopes to the sound.
Clear separation of the synthesizer panel into the listed modules, their mutual arrangement, facilitate orientation when creating different timbres.

Additionally, the synthesizer can control another identical synthesizer. To achieve this, connect the control output connector of the controlling synthesizer to the control input connector of the controlled synthesizer using a connecting cable (according to the electrical schematic diagram of CONTROL INPUT and CONTROL OUTPUT connectors, see Appendix 3). Press the CONTROL - button on the controlled synthesizer (the LED should light up). In this case, the control panel of the controlled synthesizer is disconnected from its keyboard and connected to the keyboard of the controlling synthesizer. Thus, one musician has at their disposal two identical control panels with one keyboard, allowing for two fully parallel synthesis channels, greatly expanding the possibilities for creating sounds.

The instrument provides the option to connect stereo headphones. When adjusting the instrument's volume with the foot pedal from maximum to zero, the signal to the headphones remains unchanged on all instrument outputs, allowing for preliminary control of the timbre through headphones before sending the signal to power amplifiers. When the PHASER is activated in the synthesizer or organ channel on the STEREO L and STEREO R jacks, a stereo signal can be obtained. When the PHASER is disabled in both channels, the MONO mode will be implemented.

Technical specifications include power supply from an AC voltage of 220 ± 10 V, frequency of 50 Hz, power consumption not exceeding 75 V A, and operational capability within specified temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure conditions. The relative frequency drift over 4 hours of continuous operation is no more than +0.5%. The organ keyboard spans 5 octaves, and its sound range goes from F sharp (43.65 Hz) in the control octave to E in the third octave (1318 Hz). The synthesizer keyboard spans 3 octaves, and its sound range spans 9 octaves. The tuning range for both the organ and synthesizer is +6% (+0.5 tones), with a smooth detuning range of generator 2 relative to generator 1 of at least 1 octave. The frequency cutoff of the filter can be tuned in the range of 100 to 1500 Hz. The dynamic range is not less than 55 dB, and the weight does not exceed 40 kg. Engineer: Alexander Reunov, Designer: Andrey Petukhov, Produced by: KRYZ 'Formanta.'"

The Synthesis Technology E340 is a super-saw/sine oscillator capable of generating up to 8 waveforms per output. If you want massive bass and lead voices like the JP-8000 supersaw, or thick ambient drones as if played from a slow rotary speaker, the E340 is the perfect audio source for your synth patches.

Detune the swarm of oscillators using SPREAD or with randomly filtered noise using CHAOS and CHAOS BW (bandwidth). Reset the phase of all waveforms using the SYNC trigger input, which can use another oscillator to produce a sync-lead sound.

This module supports VCV Rack’s polyphonic cables, so with 16 voices, you can generate a total of 128 waveforms per output.

This VCV Rack software module uses the original firmware from the hardware Synthesis Technology E340 module.

Korg MS-20 MKI and SQ-10

"First there was a Frostwave MS-20 filter clone pedal. Then there was the Bubblesound filter and one from Manhattan Analog. Then there was the Korg x 911. And, finally, the search for the MS-20 sound ended with an actual MS-20, with the original, nasty, gnarly, nasal, squelchy and totally distortable filter.

We already had an SQ-10 to use on Metasonix’s Hz/v Thyratron oscillators, so the MS-20 fit right in. Then we got another SQ-10, so two SQ-10s could work on Metasonix oscillators, and filters and effects, and/or the MS-20. LUXURIOUS! And kind of comical since the SQ-10 is a few hundred times larger than an RK-7. But it’s gotten oh so Marie Condo around here in 2023, so this MS-20 needs to move on to the next life with its friend SQ-10.

The MS-20 is North American/Canadian/Taiwanese power. Purchased from Reverb. The SQ-10 is Japanese, purchased from a Modwiggler who purchased it serviced from Japan (from Vintage Standards maybe?). If you’re into vintage synthesizers you surely already have a 100v power converter."First there was a Frostwave MS-20 filter clone pedal. CCTV.fm Simple Gates Eurorack Module Build & Demo

video upload by

"This is a really cool and simple module from CCTV in Canada. This dual low pass gate is sold as a DIY kit and is quite simple to put together. In this video, I share the build process, some sound samples, and my thoughts on the module.

Intro - 0:00

"Simple Gates is a dual low pass vactrol gate 4HP module with 3 filter types and a 2-pole mode in a 4HP DIY Kit. Inspired by classic Buchla designs, Simple Gates is entirely passive, drawing power from the incoming CV only.

Each low pass vactrol gate (2 in the module) has an input (on the left) and an output (on the right). Both are DC Coupled. The CV input is below and indicated by an LED and a lightning bolt symbol. CV can be applied to the CV input to open the gate (positive voltages above 1.2V open the gate). The gate can be more or less open depending on voltage applied. Short gates can be used to create plucky, percussive bursts of sound, or gradual, slow CV can be used to subtly shape the sound.

The three position switch switches between 3 different modes:

LPG - A classic low pass gate frequency response. Fully closed, the cutoff is at 20Hz, fully open the cutoff is at 6KHz. Useful for audio sources and percussive sounds. This is the traditional sound most associated with LPGs.
VCA - This mode applies no filtering to input signal, the frequency response is mostly flat. This is useful to add an additional VCA to your system, when waveshaping is to be applied elsewhere. This mode is also great for Amplitude Modulation and Frequency mixing - sending one frequency into the input and another into the CV input to obtain unusual signals on the output. Great for CV too.
LOW - an Extremely Low Pass Filter - This mode has an off-state cutoff frequency at 0.1 Hz and a on-state cutoff frequency of about 800Hz. This is fantastic for bass synths or kick drum synthesis.

Once patched, it's easy to switch between the three modes to experience how each shapes the tone. You will fall in love with this flexibility.

The bottom CV Input is normalized to the top CV Input, and the top Output can be normalized to the bottom input (via a solder jumper on the rear). This allows a 2-pole mode where a source is connected to the top input, a control voltage signal to the top CV Input, and take the output from the bottom gate's output. This mode allows 2 poles of filtering, the filtering done by first the top vactrol gate and then the bottom. This allows 9 different modes of gating to further sculpt your sound.

The Simple Gates Kit contains all parts needed to assemble this module. This kit is appopriate for beginners, there are no surface mount components and all parts are large and easy to solder."

Metasonix R-54

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is an impossible module to find and it was just luck that I was able to get it so I’m selling it with great reluctance. It kicks ass. Blast and blast, it’s got power and intensity. Grab it before I change my mind.

It uses a triode-pentode in a unique Wien-bridge circuit, to provide clean sine-wave oscillation. Using a Vactrol, the pitch of the R-54 is sweepable from less than 20 Hz to more than 5 kHz, continuously, via front-panel control or a CV input. By adjusting the waveshape/resonance control, the sinewave signal produced by the R-54 can be trimmed to less than 10% THD (depending on operating pitch)---with NONE of the problems inherent in solid-state oscillators and sine waveshapers. Because the Wien bridge contains no piecewise sine shaper or amplitude-control circuit or component. The tube itself performs that job. So the distortion products are entirely low-order, unlike the "sine waves" that solid-state VCOs or samplers produce.

Turn up the overdrive control, and the oscillator output clips the output amplifier pentode tube, for a unique soft-clipped square-wave sound. The simplicity of the R-54 will fool you--its behavior is odd and radical, and it will take you months or years to fully explore all of its quirks.

Now for the special trick. Plug an audio signal into the audio input. Instantly, the R-54 transforms from a VCO into a bandpass resonant voltage-controlled filter, with the same range as in VCO operation -- 20 Hz to 5 kHz. Its behavior and sound are unique. Again, you will be kept busy for years exploring all of its strangeness.

And now, it's got two new tricks. A VCA CV input allows you to control the output level of the R-54 as well as the amount of clipping in the output tube. Plus, a HARSH switch introduces a feedback loop into the CV control. Turn up the output level and the R-54 does very strange things.

CV response: Hz/v. Use a suitable MIDI/CV interface, or use our R-60 interface to obtain perfect equal-tempered tuning every time. Maximum output signal, 12 v p-p. Power requirement: +-12v dc, approx 150 mA. (All specifications are approximate and may vary from sample to sample.) Tubes used: 19KG8, 6AK5.

WARNING THIS MODULE USES 400mA FOR START UP!"

JKJ cv-5 MIDI to CV converter v/oct and hz/volt

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"One JKJ CV-5 midi to CV converter, built by Kyle Jarger with documentation.
The CV-5 is a pretty amazing box relative to off the shelf units these days. Note the front panel says CV-4 but it is a CV-5 internally. Kyle built this for me and was out of CV-5 panels

It is switchable between volts/octaveHz/volt. It can be calibrated to any voltage steps you want (within reason)

It offers 1 MIDI IN and MIDI THRU with several modes for the 6 output jacks.
It has:
CV/OUT
GATE AND 2/TRIG OUT ON A TRS JACK

It offers:
10 ways to control the LFO
13 ways to control the LFO wave form (it's not syncable totally, but you can restart the lfo shape based on tempo
9 choices for LFO sync to clock
can send pitch to filter jack
3 choices on portamento
4 pitch bend depth choices
4 ways to route velicity
8 ways to route velocity
7 destinations for CC1
5 choices for CC4 destinations
3 ways for note priority
7 MIDI Note ranges (5 octaves)
2 ways to rout out of range notes
2 ways to control gatesw/triggers
7 system controls, to lock, save, resett, return to default, disaable/enable changes
4 operating modes
7 seq clock modes
enable or disable 2nd MIDI channel
10 hardwired CC assignments

It has DIN Sync out

EVEN MORE FUN IS MONO AUDIO IN to STEREO out and the ability to control pan position using MIDI CC controller.

Runs on any 9-12VDC 100ma pos-tip wall wart You supply that

The only quirk is that CC values are 0-126 not 1-127 which means that for most MIDI controllers you have to round down by one number to send it what you expect."

Korg X-911 guitar synthesizer with CV inputs SN 272465

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is a 1980's attempt at something we do much better today with a pedal, but it's cool for it's quirky interface and it has the heart of a MS-20 filter and voicing in it. Plus it is now controllable with the Arturia Keystep 37!

It takes an audio input and processes it to generate a pitch voltage and envelope... using it to trigger two separate voicing sections which share the same oscillator. One is called Instrument and the other Synthe... you basically add the presets up on each side and blend them with the Balance slider. Each one has an adjustable filter setting or attack/release with the mini knob. You even get portamento which you can footswitch along with a hold function and interval jump.

It is only OK as a guitar synthesizer (it does work, I used a compressor in front) but it ROCKS as a mono keyboard filter unit or for running drum machines through... vocals can work but are iffy... don't expect vocoding. I used a Fender Rhodes which worked well, so a Rhodes patch should too. Note it also puts out this voltage and trigger, but it's Korg standard. It is monophonic, so the 'voices' are really just filtering the same oscillator in different ways. It is only good for tracking along about two or three octaves at most through the audio input, but tracks well if CV in is used over several octaves.

It does have CV and trigger in and out but they're a weird Korg Hz/V standard, not normal 5V linear. So this will work with a Kork MS20 as an expander, or Korg Sigma/Delta/Lambda or even the PS3xxx series if you have a super studio! But not anything else.

UNLESS...

If you have an Arturia Keystep 37 (not sure about any other Keystep controllers but I ran mine with a 37) you can use it as a controller and arpeggiate or sequence in addition to just playing from it, or even control the filter or LFO with a couple of cables! This is a blast and the killer app for this little gem. If you have the Keystep now this is a great add... if not and you get this at least try one with it."

"Beautiful instrument. MS series expander. Something like preset MS-10 with cv/gate, guitar or wind controller. It has a resonance control modification. Watch the video to get the picture of it's complete potential - when working. Unfortunately this one stopped tracking cv input and I didn't fix it so now it has to go. It powers up, leds are flashing, sound is coming out and you can change presets but you you can't play it with cv/gate (Hz/v). Don7t know about wind controller. Sold as is for repairs."
