"The rose and the cross" - on Roland SH-2000

Published on Feb 16, 2015 organfairy

"It's kinda funny that I haven't covered anything by Jean Jacques Perrey untill now. But there is a first time for everything and this time I am playing 'The rose and the cross' from the late 1960's.

I play the melody by hand on the SH-2000. The other parts run as a MIDI file that is controlling my Wersi Prisma DX-5 and Hohner GP-180 organs. The drums sounds are from a Roland RA-30."

NAMM 2015 - Moog Modular Re-issue NAMM Floor Demo Video

Published on Jan 21, 2015 sonicstate

Sound on Sound's Gordon Reid shows Sonic State's Nick Batt the new Moog Modular system at NAMM 2015 with Keith Emmerson smiling on.  Bob Moog, Brian Eno, Klaus Schulze and Herb Deutsch are featured in the background pics as well.

Update: I originally thought Klause Schulze was Jean-Jacques Perrey. Thanks goes to Qwave for the correction in the comments.  Herb Deutsch also added to the list.

"It is Klaus Schulze (with a special steel worker helmet) in the very beginning of the video behind Nick. The picture was taken during the Stahl Symphonie ("Steel Symphony") at the Ars Electronica festival in Linz (Austria) on the 8th September 1980."

"And at 20:24 you see Bob Moog with Herb Deutsch on the left picture in the back. And it is Eberhard Schoener (german musician, composer, conductor, and arranger) on the right picture. He got the a III P Moog Modular system as one of the very first musicians in Germany. Btw: in the next bavarian village used to live Florian Fricke (Popul Vuh), who also got a Moog Modular III P with the sequencer complement B very early. And Mr. Fricke sold his Modular to Klaus Schulze on the 22nd of December 1975. I think you will now see why I did the little detour about Florian Fricke."

Bleep's Guide to Electronic Music

This one in via Scott, via Bleep: "Bleep's guide to Electronic Music is a 55 track compilation charting the historical emergence of electronic music by looking at landmark tracks from the 1930s up to present day.

Our aim with this selection of music is to show the length and breadth of the medium, providing a snapshot of the genres forms and styles, and the development of the artform. Whilst there are omissions and compromises that we have had to make, we hope that we achieve our aims and we do some justice to the variety of music that we love.

This compilation developed out of a project to create a Facebook timeline charting the development of electronic music from the late 19th Century until now."

For reference check out 120 Years of Electronic Music

The collection begins with Olivier Messiaen's Oraison from 1937 performed on Ondes Martenot & Theremin (you can find the original full track previously posted here and a beautiful cover on Buchla 200e and Haken Continuum from the late Richard Lainhart here):

"Originally composed by Olivier Messiaen, this beautiful and contemplative piece of music is a monumental moment in electronic music. Argued to be the first piece of purely electronic music written expressly for live performance on the Ondes Martenot, an instrument closely related to the Theremin."

The collection ends with James Blake's CMYK"

"At just 21 years old, London producer, James Blake releases on newly relaunched R&S Records.

At its core 'CMYK' is forged from a myriad of 90's R&B samples (Aaliyah, Kelis) their voices mangled, barely recognisable and thrown into a red-eyed fire of DSP and hours spent in the waveforms."

Jean Jacques Perrey Interview on Astronauta Pinguim

"Jean Jacques Perrey was born on January 20, 1929 in a small village in the north of France. When he was 4 years old, Santa Claus brought him his first accordion (on Christmas Eve, 1933) and, after that, he was possessed by a "little demon of music", as he says. In 1952 while attending medical school in Paris he met George Jenny, inventor of an innovative musical instrument called Ondioline. This contact with Georges Jenny was only the first of a series of meetings with personalities who passed through the life of Jean Jacques Perrey and that somehow have marked his whole career. Because of his enormous talent to play the "ondioline", he was invited by the famous singer Edith Piaf to take part in her shows - as a musician, playing the Ondioline..."

Bob Moog Foundation Releases 2012 “Moog Pioneers in the Studio” Calendar

"December 6, 2011 - Asheville, NC - The Bob Moog Foundation announces the release of its 2012 calendar, “ Moog Pioneers in the Studio.” The calendar features photos and history from Bob Moog’s archives, as well as photos from collections of pioneering synthesists. The photos and text, compiled and written by BMF volunteer historian Brian Kehew, focus on more obscure luminaries and their fascinating instruments.

Through documenting the many musicians, composers, and scholars who collaborated with Moog, the Foundation aims to share the breadth of material encompassed in the inventor’s archives and to share the very rich history of electronic music. In addition to three photos that feature Moog himself, “Moog Pioneers in the Studio” also features Joel Chadabe, Jon Appleton, Jean Jacques-Perrey, Chris Swansen, Jon Weiss, Max Brand, Herb Deutsch, JD Robb, Eric Siday, Emmanuel Ghent, Mort Garson, and Gil Trythall.

As an ode to Moog’s pioneering work in modular synthesis, the background of calendar grid features art images of vintage Moog modules from symphonic synthiesist Erik Norlander’s 1967 modular system. The images were taken by Shaun Hollingsworth of [SIC] Images. The calendar was designed by Rose Hecht and edited by Geary Yelton. Both Kehew and Executive Director Michelle Moog-Koussa wrote forewords for the calendar.

“Saints be praised, the Bob Moog Foundation has released another fantastic, picture-laden calendar, this one for 2012! Featured in gorgeous vintage photos and posing with Moog modular synthesizers — and on occasion with the great Bob Moog himself — are 12 important pioneers of synthesized and electro-acoustic music. Some of these pioneers I’m familiar with, others not so much, and I welcome the challenge of learning more about them beyond what’s revealed by their accompanying captions. Cheers to the Bob Moog Foundation for recognizing these pioneers! I urge everyone to support the crucial Bob Moog Foundation cause by first purchasing this new calendar and by contributing in any way humanly possible.”

—Mark Vail, Music Historian, Author, Teacher and Journalist

The calendar is available for purchase on the Bob Moog Foundation's brand new online store. All proceeds from online sales go to support the Foundation's ongoing projects, including the preservation of Bob's historical and extensive archives, the expansion of our Dr. Bob's Sound School, and creation of the Moogseum in Asheville, N."

Two Performances on The Ondioline

The Ondioline

Electronic Musician Jean-Jacques Perrey on "I've Got a Secret"
YouTube via rrgomes | Mar 20, 2010 |

"Electronic music pioneer Jean-Jacques Perrey appears on "I've Got a Secret" (November 21st, 1966) with host Steve Allen and panelists Betsy Palmer, Bill Cullen, Bess Myerson, and Henry Morgan.

After several other musicians are introduced along with their instruments (violin, French horn, bagpipe, clarinet) we learn that Perrey's secret is "I play one instrument that can sound like all of these."

After the game, that instrument is revealed to be the Ondioline, an early synthesizer-like keyboard instrument. He demonstrates that it can indeed mimic the sounds of the others and make unique sounds of its own.

Perrey and his collaborator Gershon Kingsley, with whom he recorded the 1966 album "The In Sound from Way Out", then play one of their compositions."

Synthetic Sound Labs JJP SampleCorder - Model 1450 - Preliminary Specifications

"The SSL 1450 JJP SampleCorder module is a humble tribute to Jean-Jacques Perrey and the early musique-concrete pioneers, where small snips of recordings were pieced together into new forms of musical expression. Now you can experiment using true analog sound samples that can be played back with electronic precision.

The SampleCorder is designed around an ISD2560 analog voice recorder chip, and includes compander chip to reduce noise and improve clarity.

Each module can hold two samples, each from a few milliseconds up to about 30 seconds. Each can be triggered manually via a panel mounted button, or by a gate pulse. A short "done" output pulse is available so that multiple modules can be cascaded. An onboard PIC CPU microprocessor controls timing, and is updateable by replacing a small socketed chip. Once triggered, the sample will play to the end of the sample and stop, and/or proceed to the next triggered sample. Premature retriggering or early truncation of a sample is not possible."
