Alias Zone/Chris Meyer: Fear Itself (modular synth performance)

Learning Modular

"A live modular performance based around Roosevelt's "the only thing we have to hear is fear itself" speech. Three different takes - each performed straight through - were edited together to create the best composite performance where I could also show how I was manipulating the modular during the performance.

Chris Meyer | Learning Modular's Ghost Beats Presentation for the Colorado Modular Synth Fest 2020

Learning Modular

"For those who are curious, here is a slightly higher quality recording of the 'ghost beats' presentation I did for the 2020 Colorado Modular Synth Fest (CMSF). The basic technique is taking two rhythm patterns - one that is the skeletal framework you want to always hear, and one with beats appearing and disappearing using a probability skipper - and using a logic module to blend them together."

Monster Patch Demo: KARP

Published on May 11, 2020 Learning Modular

"This was the first patch demonstrated during the 'Patching the Monster' live webcast [below] with Chris Meyer of LearningModular.com, Ben 'DivKid' Wilson, and Kim 'Bjooks' Bjørn.

The arpeggiator in a Korg taktile 49 keyboard controller is driving a Mutable Instruments Rings, 2hp Pluck, and an analog synth voice consisting of a Birdkids TheBateleur, Livewire AFG, Rossum Evolution, and Erogenous Tones VC8, modulated by an Ian Fritz Hypster, Befaco VC ADSR, and Erogenous Tones RADAR. Voltage-controlled panning is from a Happy Nerding PanMix; reverb is from a Happy Nerding FX Aid.

The patch diagram for this is available on the Patch & Tweak website: http://editor.patchandtweak.com/patch...

It is also broken down in detail on the Learning Modular Patreon channel: https://www.patreon.com/posts/37007415"

Published on Apr 15, 2020 DivKidVideo

"Chris Meyer of Learning Modular is filling his new ADDAC Monster case with a huge custom power solution and of course LOTS of Eurorack modules. These four live streams see Kim Bjorn & I (DivKid) talk through the system with Chris as he fills that case. We'll be discussing module choices, pairings, utilities that keep things working together and of course plenty more."

Modular Synthesis Intro Concepts from Patch & Tweak

Published on Apr 7, 2019 PATCH & TWEAK

Tutorials from Patch & Tweak co-author Chris Meyer of Learning Modular.

"When you first get into sound synthesis, it may seem like people are speaking an alien language, describing it in terms of frequency, amplitude, harmonics, waves, modes, poles, envelopes, modulators, and the such.

But behind those words are some fairly simple concepts: What pitch you playing a sound at? How loud is it? How does that loudness change over the course of a note? How bright or dull does it sound? How can you change that brightness or dullness?

We describe these concepts in the Modular Synthesis section starting on page 12 of Patch & Tweak. But there’s nothing like hearing what they actually sound like, and seeing what we’re actually doing on a modular synthesizer to create those different sound qualities.

Therefore, Patch & Tweak co-author Chris Meyer of Learning Modular has created a set of short beginner-friendly movies that explain these Basic Concepts."

Learning Modular Synthesis: Arturia Modular V – Introduction

Learning Modular Synthesis: Arturia Modular V – Introduction from Learning Modular on Vimeo.

"This is the course overview for 'Learning Modular Synthesis: Arturia Modular V' where I lay out the basic idea of the course, and what will be covered in what order.

One of the most exciting areas of music creation is modular synthesis, where you get to interconnect the fundamental building blocks of a synthesizer to create your own instrument. In this course, music industry veteran and synth designer Chris Meyer uses the Arturia Modular V software – a realistic emulation of the original Moog modular synths of the 1960s and 1970s – to teach you how to "patch" a modular synth to create your own sounds. Chris starts with the fundamentals of how harmonics and sound work, as well as how to connect the modules together. He then goes through the main modules individually, explaining the differences between oscillator waveshapes, filter types, and more, while demonstrating how to use them in a musical context. The third chapter teaches advanced techniques such as frequency and amplitude modulation, as well as using the effects and advanced filters in Arturia Modular V.

The course is available through LinkedIn Learning (http://bit.ly/lms_amv_lil) and Lynda.com (http://bit.ly/lms_amv). If you do not already have a subscription to one of these services, sign up for an account at http://lynda.com/trial/chrismeyer and sample this course and any of the others they offer, including well over 250 on audio and music (including my original Learning Modular Synthesis course for hardware modular systems: http://bit.ly/LearningModular). If you don't like what you see, cancel before 10 days and your credit card will not be charged."

Learn Modular Synthesis - Online Course From the Creator of Vector Synthesis

"If you’re new to modular synthesis and are wondering just how you’re supposed to use all those cables and knobs to create the sounds you hear in your head, synth industry veteran Chris Meyer – the creator of Vector Synthesis [see The Birth of the Prophet VS], and long-time modular enthusiast – has created the online course 'Learn Modular Synthesis' for LinkedIn/Lynda.com that will help take you from ground zero to patching your own sounds. It starts with a pair of 'fundamentals' movies teaching the principles of harmonics and voltage control, then spends a chapter helping you weigh what to consider when configuring your own system – it even covers correctly plugging in the power jumpers to avoid costly disasters.

The meat of the course is the chapters on 'Learning Subtractive Synthesis' and 'Exploring Alternate Techniques' that slowly build up your knowledge module-by-module and technique-by-technique. The first starts with oscillators and waveforms (analog and digital), and then adds in filters demonstrating the effect of using different modes, slopes, and adding resonance. After that it moves onto modulation, including comparing different envelope shapes plus demonstrating typical LFO (low frequency oscillator) applications. The latter chapter gets into oscillator sync, FM, AM, waveshaping, low pass gates, and even effects, including processing externals sounds through your modular synth. Throughout the course he uses a small 2-row rack mount system based on the Roland System 500, expanded with modules from a wide variety of manufacturers. He even color-codes his cables based on function, making it easier to follow a patch. By the end, you’ll be familiar with a wide range of both 'East Coast' and 'West Coast' techniques.

A few movies – such as those on control voltage, patching a typical subtractive synthesizer voice, and exponential frequency modulation – are free to all. The rest of the course requires a Lynda.com subscription. However, if you sign up with the URL http://lynda.com/trial/chrismeyer, you get full access to the entire site – including over 200 other audio and music courses – for 10 days before they start to bill your credit card. It only costs $25/month if you decide to stay a member. For more information including an introductory movie, visit the Training page on Chris’ 'Learning Modular' web site: http://learningmodular.com/training/."
