Chris Carter - CCCL LepLoop Experiment & The Different Iterations of the LepLoop

Note the above is from 9 years ago. Below is an image featuring the different iterations of the LepLoop.

"The LepLoop
I've used a lot of synths over the years but this one is something different… it's a strange instrument. It's small, much smaller than it appears in photos: it is part synth, part drum machine, part multi-track sequencer. I'm still figuring it all out but initial impressions are that it's very unpredictable and slightly unstable… but in a good way. I had a few issues with it sometimes refusing to work and also it has a tendency to pick up stray signals from my iPhone and iPad if they are anywhere near it. But when it works it is quite rewarding to use and is capable of some amazing sounds - if mildly frustrating trying get it to do what I think it 'should' be able to do - but I will persevere. If you like wonderful experimental noises - accompanied by a simple rhythm (although I'm sure it's very capable of a lot more) then this little unit could be for you.
The LepLoop will definitely become part of my CCCL experimental arsenal and will most likely get seconded into the upcoming Throbbing Gristle experimental sets in October/November 2010.
The short sound example here was performed without a keyboard, just using the internal sequencer and some real-time tweakery. The outputs were processed with a couple of Eventide pedals for some 'tape delay' & reverb.

UPDATE:
Apparently my LepLoop is a prototype, which accounts some of the 'issues' I had with it - the production version should run fine."

-CALC- Lep-Cuit Naturale - Novation Circuit and Leploop shake hands firmly

Published on Jan 7, 2016 -CALC-

"I forgot I made this.... ages ago!

It's the wonderful Novation Circuit joining forces with the wonderful Leploop. This track starts from scratch so everything is being made in real time... Circuit makes it an total breeze to do this.

Before a chat with Tonylight (Absolute gentleman, legend and inventor of the Leploop) I didn't even realise that the Leploop worked with a MIDI note input on channel 1.... I've previously just used the MIDI input to clock the internal sequencer but it really opens up musically when the Leploop's synth has a tempered pitch fired into it!

One thing that is missing though is the Leploop's Cassa (kick) drum, I think I must have forgotten to record it.... Even so I think it still sounds interesting without it. Especially the Leploop's Osc FM madness!

Leploop synth is being sequenced by Synth 1 sequencer from Circuit but the noise hi-hats and (not heard Cassa) are internally sequenced. Circuit is on drum duties and the Synth 2 bass line at the end, it also sometimes doubles the Leploop part on Synth 1.
MIDIClock is coming from Circuit."

Leploop is here!

It looks like Leploop is shipping. via camp 303:

"It's very small and very weird...and I love it!

I just unpacked the first (?) Leploop sold and this is my first impression: it is very well built and sound really nice! My first impressions are that the small trimpot-like knobs actually have a good feeling to them and the shafts are long enough to allow good tweaking. The case and panel looks to be well manufactured, laser etched aluminium and wood. The wooden parts are a bit soft and scratches easily so I have to get a (very small) case for it.

The box is tiny as you can see in the picture, a 303 alongside for size comparison.

The bassdrum has almost 808-like qualities at low settings but the resonance and dist knobs makes it transform into something else when turned high. Resonance is the same as decay so I guess it is a triggered resonantfilter, half of the range of that control gives longer decay and the other half makes the filter oscillate for harsh and screaming timbres.
The sound of the oscillators and filters are good and the modulation possibillities are vast since lfo and s/h can be applied to many parameters. It goes low in the bass and you can make a nice dissonant detuned sounds using the two oscillators.

The sequencer is a mystery so far, I have some reading of the manual to do! I managed to make som nice basslines and beats after 15 minutes but I don't really know how I did it!"

Update via camp 303: "I ordered from Antonio, I found the email on his blog. I paid 345 EUR including shipping, a very good price I think...I can't even imagine how much work they put in to this! I'm starting to get the hang of the sequencer and rythm section and it is unlike anything I ever used in over 15 years of synth-tweaing! You enter notes by routing the sample and hold (with either LFO or noise as an input) to an A/D converter and writing a melody. Then you rearrange the notes by selecting clock division speed, last note and active steps and step order to get the melody you want! You can make pretty complex melodies and I think I managed to get five voices out of the box once by modulating the cutoff and resonance of the filter! (Bassdrum, VCA1, VCA2, VCF and modulated resonance!)"

'S Gone - CALC- Novation Circuit controlling 0-Coast, ARP 2600, Leploop and a ton of other stuff.

Published on Dec 7, 2016 -CALC-

"This is a bit of a monster set-up. Circuit is controlling everything and it's a huge chain of events.

The track found its way into two parts with a huge pallette of synths at the beginning and a Leploop psyche odyssey jam at the end. not without it's errors but it was a jam.

Gearwise:

Circuit's MIDI output is feeding a Hotchki55 Banana split 6 way MIDI thru.
That in turn is feeding MIDI to a Roland Juno106, Korg Poly61M, Make Noise 0-coast, Leploop… oh the lovely Leploop and (using the fantastic Hotchki55 CVOCD MIDI to CV converter) the Multi Cassa V2 is being triggered by Circuit’s Drum 3+4

A nice thing is using the 0-Coasts MIDI B CV and Gate output to control the ARP2600 from Circuit’s Synth (MIDI) 2 sequence. Having the ARP sequenced from Circuit is a massive joy!
Circuit’s synth 2 track is actually sequencing the Juno, Korg, ARP and its own Circuit sound towards the end.
Synth 1 is controlling the Leploop and 0-Coast sound arpeggiating notes from MIDI 1 but with a trigger from the CVOCD for a bit of rhythmic interest.

All the stuff is running through the strymon Big Skies and TimeLine and the Circuit takes a slightly dizzy spell through the amazing Rodec Restyler.

The Strymons really PSYCHE this out towards the end of the track.

Of course the is a heavy helping of Leploops Cassa and noisey hats throughout and the incredible new Multicassa V2 is just sublime. Especially triggering it from a sequencer… there is a lot more to come with this little wooden box.

So there is the set up… as I said it’s monster but everything used is totally being controlled by the two MIDI channels of Circuit, with some percussion and triggering added by Circuits sample drum tracks. The Leploop, 0-Coast and MultiCassa take their midiclock from Circuit too.

Just goes to show what you can do with two midi channels and 4 drum tracks and a midiclock output."

Its the LEPLOOP!!!! A Deep dive with -CALC-

Published on Mar 22, 2019 -CALC-

"This is a really long video... its 7 minutes before I stop waffling and there is even any Leploop sound.
Finally though here is a tutorial I have been wanting to make for a long long time.
The marvellous Italian groovebox of wonders.... the LEPLOOP.

Clocking in at 1 hour and 8 minutes this is not for the faint hearted, it gets pretty hairy at points too but it covers what this unusual groovebox is and how it does what it does......

The first half considers the voice engines and how they are controlled, the second half concentrates on what must be one of the most awkward but ultimately rewarding sequencers of all time.
Its a beast but with perseverance it can be tamed... well actually I'm not sure tamed is the right word.

I hope someone somewhere finds it useful in breaking the enigmatic code of the LEPLOOP

Cheers

LepLoop Eurorack Drum Modules

via Leploop

"Percussion modules based on LepLoop V2 Cassa design.
Cassa: Same as LepLoop v2 Cassa, hard\soft BD generator can go full resonance.
Cassa CV: Add cv control over frequency and resonance with cv amount.
Bongo: Same as Cassa one octave higher pitch range, Tom and Bongo like sounds.
Bongo CV: Add cv control over frequency and resonance with cv amount.
Legno: Very high pitch Cassa for rim shot, wood blocks, fingers snap like sounds.
Legno CV: Add cv control over frequency and resonance with cv amount.
Piattino: Hi-hat module based around Cassa design with white noise and tow release envelope.
All percussion module are 3U 4\6 HP and have tow trig input and a trig mix pot. accepting different signal :

Trig: short trig, less than 10ms will play one time, longer trig will play tow times.
Cv: you can use different cv signal like envelope, lfo for trig the modules.
Audio: Cassa design is based around a stepped resonant filter, you can route audio signal to a trig input for filter and distortion effect.

TRIG MIX : The rhythm played by the Cassa is the sum of the tow trig IN1 and IN2.
The trig mix pot. adjust the mix between the tow trig input, great for create poly rhythms.

If only IN1 or IN2 are plug the trig mix pot. adjust the level of the trig in signal.

FREQUENCY: Adjusts the pitch of the sound of the case, also affects the resonance.

RESONANCE: Adjusts the resonance, ie the damping time of the Cassa.
Beyond a certain level the Cassa go into permanent oscillation, the level at which the oscillation begins varies with frequency.

DISTORTION: Adjusts the level of Cassa signal distortion."

Cool art! Pick your favorite. I kind of like Legno.
