Modbap Modular Osiris WavPak Volume 3 by Learning Modular’s Chris Meyer

Press release follows:

Modbap Modular announces availability of Osiris WavPak Volume 3, carefully crafted by Chris Meyer to integrate seamlessly with Eurorack module namesake

LOS ANGELES, CA, USA: Modbap Modular is proud to announce availability of Osiris WavPak Volume 3 — carefully crafted by Learning Modular’s Chris Meyer to integrate seamlessly with the black-owned electronic music instrument manufacturer’s own Osiris BI-FIDELITY WAVETABLE OSC (originally introduced to a captive audience at Knobcon Number Nine, Hyatt Regency Schaumburg, IL, USA, September 10-12, 2021), providing four banks of all-new custom 32 x 32 wavetables which have been meticulously curated and designed to expand anyone’s approach to wavetable synthesis using its Eurorack module namesake — as of November 2…

As the owner of Learning Modular, an online resource to help anyone master their modular synthesizer, Chris Meyer is perfectly positioned to help expand anyone’s approach to wavetable synthesis using Modbap Modular’s Osiris, operating powerfully in and of itself as a (frequency modulation- and phase modulation-including) seven-plus TIMBRE MODE 12HP BI-FIDELITYTM WAVETABLE OSC (oscillator) module, neatly-packed with an independent sub-oscillator, LOFI processing, extensive CV (control voltage) modulation capabilities, a PITCH quantiser, four banks of 32 x 32 wavetables, the ability to load user wavetables via Micro SD card (not included), and its own free open-source wavetable editor (OsirisEdit). After all, Chris Meyer is the talented individual responsible for creating the-then-trailblazing Vector Synthesis technology behind the 1986-vintage Prophet VS DIGITAL VECTOR SYNTHESIZER, supposedly intended to revive the flagging fortunes of US synth ‘giant’ Sequential for whom he worked in an engineering role. Subsequent stints at Digidesign, Music Maker Publications, and Tom Oberheim’s Marion Systems soon ensued, before becoming the Chief Engineer at the now-defunct Roland R&D US while serving also as Technical Chairman of the MIDI Manufacturer’s Association. A transition into the video and film industries followed thereafter as his storied career continued, coming full circle to ultimately end up where he originally started — playing with modular synthesizers.

Duly derived from Chris Meyer’s sizeable studio modular synthesizer — affectionately called The Monster, the four banks of all-new custom 32 x 32 wavetables included in Osiris WavPak Volume 3 are a result of undergoing a meticulous sampling process drawing upon the talents of one of the industry’s leading experts to offer Osiris owners a wide range of timbral possibilities catering to different sonic aesthetics: BANK A — otherwise known as the ‘East Coast’ bank — features wavetables that have been carefully crafted as a result of working with Livewire Electronics AFG’s Animated Pulses and Alien Saws waveforms, as well as Serge-filtered waveforms, using techniques such as audio rate waveform crossfading to offer a diverse palette of sounds, ranging from smooth and evolving textures to aggressive and cutting tones; BANK B — the ‘West Coast’ bank — incorporates techniques like Serge rectification, wave folding, and Serge resonant EQ, the resultinwavetables providing a more experimental and abstract sonic experience suited to those interested in pushing the boundaries of sound design and diving into harmonious tones and textures; BANK C — Formants — focuses on different vowel sounds with a sound design approach anchored around both digital and analogue formant filters for creating expressive vocal-like textures and tones that are ideal for adding a human touch to compositions or exploring more abstract and otherworldly sounds; and BANK D — Harmonics — utilises tube overdrive, filter banks inspired by both Buchla and Moog stylings, as well as featuring analogue and digital additive oscillators.

On the face of it, then, the results are all a testament to the expert craftsmanship involved in ensuring the highest-quality sound production possible. Put it this way: Osiris WavPak Volume 3’s four sound banks were sampled at 96kHz, perfectly aligning with the Osiris BI-FIDELITY WAVETABLE OSC module’s unique, high-quality 96kHz sample rate operation. Ultimately, users can enjoy pristine audio clarity, enabling exploration of full depth sonic landscapes.

Lending themselves a knowing nod in the direction of Chris Meyer’s trailblazing achievements, the X-axis in all the banks contain different waveforms, while the Y-axis introduces different harmonics for each X-wave; the harmonic series used in Osiris WavPak Volume 3 are: H1 (root up), H2 (one octave up), H3 (one octave, plus perfect fifth), H4 (two octaves up), H5 (two octaves, plus major third), H6 (two octaves, plus perfect fifth), and H8 (three octaves up). It is worth noting that in some cases — especially the filter banks, formant filters, and resonant EQ — the waveform also changes with ‘harmonic’ on the Y-axis, allowing for sculpting and refining patches with extraordinary detail thanks to this precise control over harmonic content. Modbap Modular encourages experimentation with different modulation sources patched to its Osiris BI-FIDELITY WAVETABLE OSC module’s WAVE Y to further enhance sonic explorations with the texture-rich Osiris WavPak Volume 3 — think velocity/accent from a sequencer or keyboard, a mod wheel, aftertouch, ribbon controller, or even a sample & hold triggered on each new note to create dynamic and evolving timbres that respond to playing style.

And the Press Release:

Modbap Modular enters Eurorack market with powerful Per4mer quad performance effects module inauguration

LOS ANGELES, CA, USA: Eurorack modular synthesizers and instruments developer Modbap Modular by BeatPPL is proud to introduce Per4mer — perfectly portraying its inaugural offering as a 14HP quad performance effects Eurorack module inspired by beat-maker/DJ performance styles, and available to preorder — as of October 10…

The basic principle behind Per4mer is immediately apparent in its easy-to-follow front panel, packing a creative knockout punch in a compact (14HP) stereo effects-enabling Eurorack module form factor — feed in an audio input to then trigger on-the-fly effects, bringing DJ- style live improvisation to a modular environment. Effects can be triggered simultaneously or individually, where an inspiring effect palette combines to generate uniquely unconventional beats and melodies.

Per4mer puts a Doppler-style DELAY, lush REVERB, GLITCH (beat repeat), and TAPE STOP effects easily at anyone’s fingertips for triggering via four dedicated translucent mini-arcade buttons — buttons that can be manually operated or triggered from the four external gate inputs. Each effect has a set of four effects parameters that can be controlled using the four (FX 1, FX 2, FX 3, and FX 4) rotary knobs or by the four CV (control voltage) inputs. COMP (compression) with SIDE CHAIN input and COLOR processing effects are also available, along with CLOCK input and TAP tempo options. Obviously, external side chain and clock can be connected to interface with other modular and electronic music gear.

“Per4mer acts like a bridge between hip-hop and Eurorack.” So says Modbap Modular Designer and Founder Corry Banks. As a writer, emcee, producer, hip-hop artist (Phashara), and IT pro, he should surely know! “It packs in concepts familiar to lo-fi and beat-making circles, but it brings something fresh to Eurorack,” continues Corry Banks, before adding: “I think Per4mer will be a great entry point to modular synthesis for the modular-curious beat-maker — throw it into a small pod and use it like a standalone performance effects unit or rack it up with other modules to liven things up a bit.”

But best of all, Per4mer’s four performance effects — influencing its notable nomenclature, clearly — can be momentarily engaged or latched individually or simultaneously. Each effect has four tweak-able parameters associated with the four rotary knobs, duly designed for facilitating live improvisation with endless one-off, on-the-fly sounds and rhythmic dynamics. All audio inputs (INPUT L and INPUT R) are provided as mono connections, paired for stereo. Subsequently, Per4mer not only delivers a series of excellent effects and sound design possibilities, but it also allows the creative, classic, tried-and-tested techniques used by beat-makers and DJs to be applied to the wonderful world of Eurorack modular, especially enhanced by manual performance.

Digging deeper, the compressor allows for control over four compression (Threshold, Ratio, Attack, and Release) parameters via the four rotary knobs. Catering perfectly to those users craving the classic ducking sound of side chaining, the compressor also features selectable side chain detection that allows side chain activation via ‘sidechain input’, ‘audio input’, ‘clock input’, or ‘tap tempo’.

The COLOR processor features four color presets bringing texture and character to the signal path, pre effects — namely, Classic (12-bit), LoFi (8-bit), Saturation, and Wax (vinyl simulation). Such presets can be used in combination with the performance effects and compressor for a more characterful result. Reasons Corry Banks, eventually ending on a high note: “The COLOR processor is the special sauce built into Per4mer. It adds so much mojo and attitude. I lose time just enjoying processing audio through it and creating soundscapes to sample. Per4mer is a dope sound design tool as much as it is a dope performance effects module!”

Per4mer is now available to preorder at a retail price of $399.00 USD directly from Modbap Modular’s online Shop (https://modbap.com/shop/) and expected to start shipping in November 2020.

Modbap Modular Introduced Transit Eurorack 2 Channel Mixer

video upload by Modbap Modular

"Transit has two stereo (dual mono) channel lanes of audio with an all-analog signal path. Each stereo channel lane has its own input gain control, mute button and ducking input. The Ducking input on each channel operates like traditional sidechaining on a compressor where an input signal, CV or Trigger input (i.e. LFO, Clock, Gate) modulates the gain reduction of the audio."

TRANSIT INTRO video upload by Modbap Modular

And the press release:

Modbap Modular makes light work of Eurorack mixing with Transit announced as 6HP full-featured two-channel stereo mixer

LOS ANGELES, CA, USA: Modbap Modular by BeatPPL, a black-owned developer of Eurorack modular synthesizers and instruments made in America, is proud to announce Transit — thoughtfully packaged as an uncomplicated, compact (6HP), dual-channel stereo audio mixer module for Eurorack with an all- analog signal path providing performable control over routing and mixing within smaller or larger modular system setups alike, and all without forsaking flexible features with which few small-format mixers can comfortably compete — as of May 10…

Transit takes two stereo — dual mono — lanes of audio with an all-analog signal path and embellishes each of them with its own input gain control (CH1 GAIN and CH2 GAIN), mute button (CH1 MUTE and CH2 MUTE), and ducking input (CH1 DUCK and CH2 DUCK), the latter operating like traditional side-chaining on a compressor, whereby an input signal, CV (Control Voltage), or trigger input — i.e. LFO (Low-Frequency Oscillator), Clock, Gate — modulates the gain reduction of the audio. Applying this well-known production technique to the ever-widening world of Eurorack should appeal to audio professionals, beat-makers, and musicians to whom it is already familiar from a wide variety of music genres where an effect is activated by an audio track.

Transit also boasts a 3.5mm headphone (PHONES) jack with its own independent volume (PHONES GAIN) control knob, while its all- analog signal path’s final destination is a left and right stereo output (LEFT OUT and RIGHT OUT) with an associated MASTER volume knob.

Needless to say, Transit is as easy on the eye as it is in use, with digitally-controlled LEDs (Light-Emitting Diodes) for each stereo channel lane indicating level via white, blue, and pink illumination, while engaging the CH1 MUTE and/or CH2 MUTE buttons illuminates those LEDs in red. Meanwhile, MASTER and PHONES levels also have their own LEDs for level indication using the same illumination color scheme.

It is fair to say, then, that Transit is a rather full-featured compact (6HP) dual stereo channel lane Eurorack-formatted mixer that offers easy signal mixing, gain staging, ducking, and performance-oriented mutes. It is just as at home in a small Eurorack system as one Transit or more would be in a larger system.

Says Modbap Modular by BeatPPL designer and founder Corry Banks: 'The idea for Transit came about because our Per4mer quad performance FX unit sat perfectly in one of our Modbap20 powered Eurorack pods. Indeed, in this configuration, it comfortably resided on the desktop amongst all my tabletop synths, drum machines, and samplers, but I found that I wanted a bit more control over the signal into Per4mer — plus, perhaps, a headphone jack — and I definitely wanted a master volume level control for live sets. So it made perfect sense to subsequently design a module that could fill the empty 6HP next to the Per4mer in the 20HP Modbap20. Together, Transit and Per4mer make for a perfect pairing while complementing the tabletop synth and beat-maker desktop.'

Well worth mentioning is the fact that Transit also pairs well with Modbap Modular by BeatPPL’s sensational-sounding BI-FIDELITYTM WAVETABLE OSC (oscillator) module, Osiris — or, indeed, any other Eurorack entry that could conceivably benefit from a compact analogue dual-channel stereo ducking mixer, sub-mixer, or final output mixer. Making some space for one Transit or more is clearly making a wise decision to enhance Eurorack systems — bigger or smaller — with some seriously flexible features with which few small-format mixers can comfortably compete.

Expected to ship in mid-June 2022, Transit is available to preorder at an MSRP (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price) of $249.00 USD via San Clemente, CA, USA-based distributor Electro Distro’s growing global network of dealers (https://www.electro-distro.com/dealers) or directly via its dedicated webpage (which includes more in-depth information) here: https://www.modbap.com/products/transit

Modbap Introduces HUE "AUDIO COLOR PROCESSOR" Eurorack Module

video upload by Modbap Modular

Modbap Modular makes colorful Eurorack entrance at Brooklyn SYNTH+PEDAL EXPO with HUE debuting as AUDIO COLOR PROCESSOR

LOS ANGELES, CA, USA: following hot in the footsteps of Trinity, the fourth entry in its expanding Eurorack product lineup as a three-channel DIGITAL DRUM SYNTH ARRAY (as introduced at Knobcon Number Ten, a one-of-a-kind synthesizer convention held just outside of Chicago, IL, USA at the Hyatt Regency Schaumburg, September 9-11), black-owned Eurorack modular synthesis and electronic musical instrument manufacturer Modbap Modular is proud to debut HUE as its latest Eurorack entry — this time being billed as an AUDIO COLOR PROCESSOR, packing a chain of five effects (each imparting a particular coloration, tone, distortion, and/or texture to the source audio) into a 6HP- width module, making drums bang with more magnitude and melodies morph into lush lo-fi tones — at Brooklyn SYNTH+PEDAL EXPO, a free-to-the-public pop-up event of synths and guitar effect pedals, at 718 Studios, Brooklyn, NYC, USA, October 8-9…

“HUE was originally designed as the effects section for Trinity; the thought was to create an effects section that would simulate the classic, lush boom- bap and lo-fi vibes that we’ve come to love.” So says Modbap Modular founder/owner/designer Corry Banks, before continuing: “I want to bring those nostalgic textures that make things bang a bit harder and feel a bit grittier and more soulful into a single Eurorack module. HUE pairs very well with drum sources, such as Trinity, or melodic sources, such as Osiris, to further cultivate ‘that sound’. Saying that, HUE, in moderation, makes things sound more beautiful, but it can become brolic when pushed to its limits.”

Maximum (musical) muscle notwithstanding, HUE’s goal is to simply color its user’s sound — hence highlighting that the aim of its name is true, thanks to the COLOR PROCESSOR wording written across the top of its slimline front panel. Its initial concept was born out of a debate about the techniques and processes used to make drum machines sound so big, bold, and delicious. It is worth bearing in mind here, then, that the sounds that tug at the heartstrings of boom-bap, lo-fi, and, subsequently, Modbap — meaning the fusion of modular synthesis and boom-bap (or, indeed, any form of hip-hop) — are those demonstrating great texture, lush degradation, soft distortion, and big bold strokes of color.

Classic beloved drum machines were often processed with outboard gear; recorded to tape; pressed to vinyl; played over big, booming sound systems; sampled; resampled, and so on. It is no surprise, therefore, that those are the sounds that become nostalgic and reminiscent of all that the black-owned Eurorack modular synthesis and electronic musical instrument manufacturer adores about classic lo-fi boom-bap production, with HUE representing its attempt at bringing that vibe into Eurorack as a 6HP-width module.

Acting as a COLOR PROCESSOR, HUE’s effects chain signal path is as follows: DRIVE, FILTER, TAPE (saturation), LO-FI, and COMP (compressor), with the panel layout allowing for the DJ-style FILTER knob to sit in first position for ease of tweaking — LP (low-pass) when turned to the left through to HP (high- pass) when turned to the right. Digging deeper, DRIVE boosts and lightly distorts the signal, while SHIFT+DRIVE adjusts the DRIVE tone; the TAPE effect is intended to impart cassette tape saturation, while SHIFT+TAPE adjusts the intensity; LO-FI adjusts bit depth, while SHIFT+LO-FI adjusts sample rate; and, lastly, the one-knob COMP mini-pot serves as the final glue in the signal path that brings everything together. There are also DRIVE CV, FILTER CV, TAPE CV, and LO-FI CV inputs, as well as mono INPUT and OUT connections, collectively opening up a wealth of creative possibilities. Put it this way: when throwing creative modulation at it, HUE is truly a textural beast.

But best of all, HUE puts the power to shape and transform its user’s sound at their fingertips — perfect for beefing up drums while equally as magical when working on melodic content, which is exactly why it pairs so well with Trinity (https://www.modbap.com/products/trinity), the fourth entry in Modbap Modular’s expanding Eurorack product lineup as a three-channel DIGITAL DRUM SYNTH ARRAY, and Osiris (https://www.modbap.com/products/osiris), a sensational-sounding BI-FIDELITYTM WAVETABLE OSC (oscillator) module for Eurorack (introduced to widespread critical acclaim at last year’s Knobcon Number Nine). Needless to say, HUE — like its Eurorack siblings — exemplifies Modbap Modular’s musical mantra: Made for Eurorack, dope enough for boom-bap!

Expected to ship in late-October 2022, HUE is available to preorder at an MSRP (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price) of $299.00 USD via San Clemente, CA, USA-based distributor Electro Distro’s growing global network of dealers (https://www.electro-distro.com/dealers) — including Sweetwater (https://www.sweetwater.com), the USA’s number one eCommerce provider of music instruments and pro audio gear — or directly via its dedicated webpage (which includes more in-depth information) here: https://www.modbap.com/products/hue

Modbap Introduces Meridian 14hp Dual Multimode Filter Array Eurorack Module

video upload by Modbap Modular

"Meridian is a 14hp dual multimode filter array, designed to offer users a choice between 4 selectable filter types per side and 4 selectable filter modes per side, plus 2 effects (drive & phase shift) and the ability to be pinged. This allows users the flexibility to easily create a range of unique sound textures and sonic landscapes using a single powerful eurorack filter module.

The name Meridian represents the idea of a meeting point or a convergence of different elements. Filters are often used to blend, shape, and refine different sounds into a cohesive whole. Meridian is often represented through the idea of a barrier or a line that separates parts. This concept mirrors the way the filter delineates different frequencies and aural elements, generating a defined contrast that shapes the overall sound.

Press release follows:

Modbap Modular expands Eurorack range with Meridian module announced as DUAL MULTIMODE FILTER ARRAY

LOS ANGELES, CA, USA: black-owned electronic music instrument manufacturer Modbap Modular is proud to announce upcoming availability of Meridian as the sixth module in its expanding Eurorack range — duly designed as a DUAL MULTIMODE FILTER ARRAY to offer users a choice between four selectable filter types per side and four selectable filter modes per side, as well as DRIVE CIRCUIT and PHASE SHIFTER effects, plus a (low- pass gate-style) PING ability — as of April 12 (in advance of appearing at The 2023 NAMM Show, April 13-15, in Anaheim, CA, USA)…

As a MULTIMODE FILTER ARRAY — as the wording subtly sited across the top of the instantly-recognizable Modbap Modular brand color- coordinated front panel points out, Meridian affords users the flexibility to easily create a range of sound textures and sonic landscapes using a single Eurorack module. Meridian represents the idea of a meeting point or a convergence of different elements; after all, filters are often used to blend, shape, and refine different sounds into a cohesive whole. When defining meridian as a word, it is often represented through the idea of a barrier or a line that separates parts; this concept mirrors the way that a filter delineates different frequencies and aural elements, generating a defined contrast that shapes the overall sound.

Saying that, then, the naming of Modbap Modular’s 14HP-width Meridian module conveys a sense of balance, harmony, and unity, while also suggesting a clear and definitive separation between different sonic elements. Indeed, it allows the use of two selectable — mixed or matched — filter types and two selectable — mixed or matched — filter modes to reshape and refine the source material into new cohesive textures.

Those two filters each have independently adjustable CUT OFF, RES (resonance), and SHAPE (contour) parameters. PRIMEFREQ is the center macro control of both filters in tandem. The module also boasts PING, an aptly-titled dynamic control feature, the activation of which is enabled through the PING input. It also allows CONFIGURATION of serial or parallel routing.

Besides boasting comb, ladder, OTA (Operational Transducer Amplifier), and vocal formant filter types alongside LP (low-pass), HP (high-pass), BP (band-pass), and NOTCH filter modes to generate a vast range of textures, Meridian’s sound-shaping capabilities are also furthered by its two distinctive and characterful effects: DRIVE CIRCUIT (with AMOUNT, TONE, and CRUSH controls) and PHASE SHIFTER (with PAN, DEPTH, and SPEED controls).

Clearly, all of Meridian’s key features can be modulated via CV (control voltage) inputs — synchronization to tempo can be achieved with the CLOCK input, allowing for clock-synchronized phase shifting, for instance.

In essence, Meridian was designed with tweak-ability and performance in mind — as is typical of Modbap Modular modules. Indeed, it is the perfect playmate for Osiris — operating itself as a powerful (frequency modulation- and phase modulation-including) seven-plus TIMBRE MODE 12HP-width BI-FIDELITYTM WAVETABLE OSC (oscillator) module, neatly-packed with an independent sub-oscillator, LOFI processing, extensive CV modulation capabilities, a PITCH quantizer, four banks of 32 x 32 wavetables per bank, the ability to load user wavetables via microSD card (not included), and its own free open-source wavetable editor (OsirisEdit).

Modbap Modular will be exhibiting at The NAMM Show 2023, April 13-15, in Anaheim, CA, USA. Feel free to swing by booth #9800 — shared with Canadian startup This.is.NOISE inc, where it will be demonstrating its entire Eurorack range, including the Meridian module announced as a DUAL MULTIMODE FILTER ARRAY.

Modbap Trinity - 3 Channel Digital Drum Synth Array Eurorack Module

video upload by Modbap Modular

"TRINITY is a 3 channel Digital Drum Synth Array packed into a 20hp eurorack synthesizer. Effectively, Trinity performs as 3 powerful drum voices packaged into one beastly drum module with a few tricks up its sleeve.

The name Trinity refers to the 3 drum channels and tips its hat to the core elements of any modern beat driven composition which is typically Kick, Snare and Hat. Trinity takes this simple idea and flips it on its head with 3 channels and an array of drum synth algorithms that use various types of synthesis (Subtractive, Additive, FM & Noise) allowing for a wide array of drum design capability that achieves and reaches far beyond the conventional."

Modbap Trinity Introduction

Press release follows:

Modbap Modular expands Eurorack module lineup with Trinity debuting as a DIGITAL DRUM SYNTH ARRAY at Knobcon Number Ten

LOS ANGELES, CA, USA: black-owned Eurorack modular synthesis and electronic musical instrument manufacturer Modbap Modular is proud to debut Trinity — the fourth entry in its expanding Eurorack product lineup as a three-channel DIGITAL DRUM SYNTH ARRAY, as the appropriate wording on the distinctive-looking, triple-colour-highlighted-branded front panel in reference to effectively performing as three powerful drum voices packed into a 20HP module with a tip of the proverbial (electronic hi-) hat to the typical (kick, snare, and hi-hat) core elements of any modern beat-driven composition subtly suggests, albeit with some neat production tricks thrown into the musical mix — at Knobcon Number Ten, a one-of-a-kind synthesizer convention now in its tenth year, held just outside of Chicago, IL, USA, at the Hyatt Regency Schaumburg, September 9-11…

“Trinity has evolved over time to become what it is today.” Modbap Modular founder/owner/designer Corry Banks is perfectly positioned to introduce Trinity to the musical masses, historically highlighting its interesting journey getting there thusly: “I wanted a drum module that would allow me to have a simple-yet-smacking kick, snare, and hi-hat in one module. I also wanted to play outside of that simplicity with malleable percussion synthesis. Trinity had to have a degree of hands-on control, together with a good deal of CV and/or MIDI control. I get into sound design, too, so Trinity had to serve me well in that area, and it does not disappoint. Trinity is all of that, while finding a way to introduce a few interesting and fun quirks as well.”

With that being said, Trinity takes the simple idea of tipping the proverbial (electronic hi-) hat to the typical (kick, snare, and hi-hat) core elements of any modern beat-driven composition and flipping that on its head by combining its three channels with an array of drum synth algorithms that use various synthesis types — namely, BLOCK (analogue-inspired drum synth building blocks featuring a sine and triangle core; great for traditional electronic drum creation), HEAP (additive drum synth with 12 partials; great for fun, natural sounds and pitched, percussive sounds), NEON (FM drum synth engine; great for high-quality FM drums, clangorous metallic percussion, and more), and ARCADE (quirky noise generator synth, reminiscent of classic Eighties-era arcade games with zaps, crashes, explosions, and more; great for claps, hi-hats, and even some vinyl noise approximations, as well as all sorts of fun percussion and degraded noises) — to allow for a wide variety of drum design capability that achieves and reaches far beyond the conventional. Clearly living up to its front panel-positioned DIGITAL DRUM SYNTH ARRAY wording, which immediately steers its users into a certain way of thinking, Trinity’s array of digital drum synth algorithms are very malleable, thanks to the seven sizeable knobs and four mini-pots positioned in the upper half of that distinctive-looking, triple-colour-highlighted-branded front panel. Put it this way: each control a specific parameter and characteristic — PITCH, SWEEP, TIME, SHAPE, GRIT, DECAY, EQ, CLIPPER, HOLD, VOL (volume), and, of course, CHARACTER — for each drum voice. The three — DRUM CV1, DRUM CV2, and DRUM CV3 — channels each have their own TRIG (trigger) and V/OCT (one-volt-per-octave) inputs in addition to extensive CV input options, all available for front panel-positioned patching purposes.

Trinity takes its capabilities several steps above and beyond anything comparable in the modular Eurorack world with cyclical (C. MODE) options offering round robin and random playback, as well as two STACK modes. Musically, round robin cycles through the drum algorithm types one after another with each trigger, while random randomises the parameters of a channel’s chosen drum algorithm type with each trigger. Those STACK modes are inspired by the characteristics of chopped breaks where drums tend to overlap and fan out, depending on the content of the chopped source material. Trinity’s take on that allows the second and third drum channels to be triggered by the primary channel’s TRIG and V/OCT inputs; in addition, ‘secondary’ STACK SPREAD functionality allows for fanning out the stacked drums to taste.

Trinity’s uniquely performable and switchable OUTPUT matrix allows for the routing of each drum channel’s output to the MIX output, the individual — DRUM1, DRUM2, and DRUM3 — output, or ALL. As such, easy performability, mutability, parallel processing, or side chaining are all perfectly possible.

Thereafter, Trinity’s USB MIDI connection allows for MIDI control over various parameters via one USB cable. Clearly, USB MIDI makes instant integration a cinch by simply connecting one USB cable from Trinity to a groove-box or computer.

All in all, then, Trinity packs a hefty percussive punch, weighing in at a 20HP width with 11 knobs, three drum channels, three trigger buttons, four drum algorithms based on four different synthesis types, 24 CV inputs, three-output switching with three individual outputs, a mix output, and MIDI-over-USB connection belying its 26mm depth. Concludes Corry Banks: “I think we’ve achieved a good deal more than we even initially set out to do with Trinity.” That’s really saying something — all the more so since the truly talented individual concerned holds an Associate’s Degree in Electronics, a Bachelor’s Degree in Technology Management, and a Master’s Degree in Project Management! After all, Trinity truly is a percussive powerhouse of synthesis — so much more than a simple-yet-smacking kick, snare, and hi- hat in one module, but rather a Eurorack module like no other... one which is bolstered by its inclusion of a bunch of really dope-sounding synth algorithms with which it does not disappoint.

Duly making its debut at Knobcon Number Ten, a one-of-a-kind synthesizer convention now in its tenth year, held just outside of Chicago, IL, USA, at the Hyatt Regency Schaumburg, September 9-11, anyone wishing to see (and hear) Trinity in action in advance of shipping should seriously consider checking it out there — assuming, of course, that they are in the general vicinity or prepared to travel at short notice if not already attending.

Expected to ship in mid-October 2022, Trinity is available to preorder at an MSRP (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price) of $549.00 USD via San Clemente, CA, USA-based distributor Electro Distro’s growing global network of dealers (https://www.electro-distro.com/dealers) or directly via its dedicated webpage (which includes more in-depth information) here: https://www.modbap.com/products/trinity

Osiris is a bi-fidelity wavetable oscillator with 4 banks of 32 wavetables each (128 wavetables in total). Each wavetable has 32 waveforms at 256 samples per waveform.

Osiris is designed to be used as a powerful bi-fidelity wavetable oscillator with an added sub-oscillator. The sub-oscillator has its own v/oct, mix knob, and mono output. If the sub-oscillator output is not patched, the sub-oscillator output is normalized to the mix out. Essentially, the sub-oscillator can act as its own independent oscillator allowing Osiris to be utilized as two separate oscillators.

The Sub Wave allows for the selection of the sub oscillator’s waveform. The waveforms are – Square, Sine, Triangle, -1, -2, offering basic waves at a lower frequency than the main oscillator that add weight to the main oscillator. -1 and -2 represent a copy of the wavetable at 1 octave below and 2 octaves below the main oscillator, respectively.

The built-in VCA and decay parameters allow for wide-open melodic fades as well as easy percussive plucks.

Timbre Modes are a set of selectable forms of waveshaping that vastly expand Osiris’ range in sound possibilities. All of the Timbre Modes live on one CV-enabled knob, allowing for smooth morphing between modes which makes for some very cool blended timbres between modes. Timbre Amount allows for dialing in as much or as little of the selected timbre as desired.

Timbre Modes (Waveshapers)

Unison – Layers a second oscillator that detunes from slight beatings up to an octave.
Bend – Compresses the waveform to a thinner shape
Fold – Introduces symmetric 2-stage wave folding by first mirroring the waveform and then folding it
Sync – Repeats the cycle count of the waveform within a Hanning window, making the edges soft
Noise– Adds window-synced noise to the waveform phase
FM x 1 – Applies phase modulation to the oscillator using the same waveform
FM x ….8 – The FM scans through a ratio of 1 up to a ratio of 8 smoothly, with mixed stages in between

As a bi-fidelity wavetable oscillator, Osiris runs at 96khz for high-quality sound output but it also has a classic, pleasing, and musically gritty LoFi flavor. The CV-enabled Lofi knob controls the fidelity of the oscillator allowing it to go from subtle degradation to complete destruction. The sound of the LoFi parameter takes inspiration from old amiga computer audio characteristics, introducing sample jitter, phase drift, and resolution reduction. Because it is not a simple on/off switch, dialing in just the right amount of LoFi texture is easy.

Osiris allows the use of user wavetables via a micro-SD card (not included). Users may create, edit and save their own wavetables using OsirisEdit, an open-source wavetable editor designed specifically for OSIRIS to create wavetables and WavPaks (groups of Osiris ready wavetables organized into folders) that are compatible with the Modbap Modular Osiris oscillator. More on Osirisedit here.

Osiris was developed in collaboration with Ess Mattisson of Fors (Fors.fm).

Knobcon 2023 DivKid Vids

video upload by DivKid

"All DivKid videos from my trip to Chicago, USA for Knobcon 2023"

Playlist:

1. 73-75 era Serge in the black panel 'Quasar' system // Prism Circuits at Knobcon 2023
Here we meet Sky from Prism Circuits who takes us through what he offers in the 4U Serge format, specifically taking us through his black panelled QUASAR system which uses classic 1973 - 1975 era Serge circuits.

2. Uncontrollable Rhythms from Moon Cycles and beyond // Pet Rock at Knobcon 2023
Here's Jonah from Pet Rock taking us through his sell out, sold at cost, first Eurorack module 'Pet Rock'. The module uses moon cycle data and random number generations to create two complimentary or drifting rhythms of varying step lengths and pattern densities. It's a fascinating concept that could lead to "good days and bad days" for your rhythms.

3. QV-L a POWERHOUSE of a Eurorack modulation source // Five12 at Knobcon 2023
Here's Jim Coker of Five12, of numerology and Vector fame, taking us through his new QV-L 'quad variable LFO'. It's a real powerhouse of a modulation module with 4 outputs, multiple clocking and frequency options, internal modulation, random generators, customisable control/performance options, syncing to the Vector sequencer for additional program changes and lots more.

4. NEW way to WAVETABLE! with Alias Zone & Osiris // Chris Meyer & ModBap at Knobcon 2023
Chris Meyer of Learning Modular & Alias Zone has A NEW WAY TO WAVETABLE!

Chris has been working on a new X and Y based wavetable systems that does two fascinating things, firstly it "samples" his whole large studio system while keeping that performable and responsive in the ModBap Modular Osiris and secondly he's using harmonics and interval sets to create morphing tunings within those sounds too.

This wavetable pack will be released for free through the ModBap site in the near future.

5. A Modular Approach to Eurorack Mixing with BARTENDER & BARBACK // After Later Audio at Knobcon 2023
Here we have several new modules from After Later Audio from Knobcon 2023. Lenny takes us through Bartender, Barback and Cast Iron which make up a new expandable, modular approach to Eurorack format mixing.

6. Simple solid clock sync! The Missing Link & ML:2 (Ableton Link) // Circuit Happy at Knobcon 2023
Giving the demo without any audio to listen to is a big move. A bold move made possible by rock solid behaviour from the devices from Circuit Happy. We have The Missing Link Junior and ML:2 Eurorack modules that are both Ableton Link enable devices for not just clock sync and reset but bar position aware behaviours for triggering and syncing to the patterns too. Impressive all round.
7. Better Spring Reverb! (with more filter features than your filter?) // Bubblesound at Knobcon 2023
It was great to meet David from Bubblesound at Knobcon 2023. I've been a long time user of his modules and he's consistently made quality modules over the years. The upcoming Spring Reverb module looks at Spring Reverb options in existence and aims to make them better, a fully featured SEM style multimode filter is on the module so you can really shape what's going into the physical spring, changing it's behaviour and sound. There's on board feedback which David is leaning into in this video too for more experimental patching.

The Noiseblast Hour

Published on Oct 27, 2019 Noise Engineering

"Live from the Noise Engineering headquarters in Los Angeles, CA, it's the Noiseblast Hour, brought to you by Noise Engineering, hosted by Pyraphonic (aka Shawn Jimmerson)! This is the third installment in a series of indeterminate length and sporadic release (h/t Roman Mars). Watch here for future episodes!

In today's episode, we have Patrick O'Brien, aka POB, and BBoyTech. Stay tuned after each set for a short interview with the performers!

Patrick O'Brien aka POB is a modular synth performer based in Los Angeles. Patrick grew up outside of St. Louis, classically trained on both piano and trumpet, which comes through in his melodic performances. Patrick is also part of the Modular on the Spot organizational team that sets up free outdoor public modular synth performances each month in LA. You can catch his live performances on YouTube as obrienmedia and Instagram as pobenergy.

Superbooth 22: Modbap Modular - Per4mer, Osiris And Transit

video upload by sonicstate

"It was great to see Corry Banks from Modbap Modular again as he performed with the Osiris, Per4mer and Transit modules from Modbap.

Per4mer is a quad performance effects eurorack module for live or studio use. There are 4 performance effects (Delay, Reverb, Glitch & Tape Stop) and 2 audio processing effects (color and compressor with side chain).

Osiris is a powerful, compact wavetable oscillator with waveshaping and phase modulation, and an independent sub-oscillator

Transit has two stereo lanes of audio each with its own input gain control, mute button and ducking input. The Ducking input on each channel operates like traditional side-chaining on a compressor where an input signal, CV or Trigger input (i.e. LFO, Clock, Gate) modulates the gain reduction of the audio.

Osiris available now. Price: 359 USD

Per4mer available now. Price: 404 USD

Transit available for pre-order. Price 249.99 USD Shipping: June 22"

Knobcon 22: modbap Modular Trinity Drum Voices

video upload by sonicstate

"Modbap Modular recently introduced Trinity, the 4th module of its expanding Eurorack product lineup.

Its a three-channel DIGITAL DRUM SYNTH ARRAY, effectively performing as three drum voices in a 20HP module with a tip of the proverbial (electronic hi-) hat to the typical (kick, snare, and hi-hat) core elements of any modern beat-driven composition.

Corry spoke to Jim about the new module.

Pricing and Availability:
Expected to ship in mid-October 2022, Trinity is available to preorder at an MSRP of $549.00 USD via San Clemente, CA, USA-based distributor Electro Distro's growing global network of dealers or directly via its dedicated webpage (below).

Modbap TRINITY Overview - Drum Synths, Cycle Modes & Stack Modes

video upload by Modbap Modular

Update: basic operations video added below.

"TRINITY is a 3 channel Digital Drum Synth Array packed into a 20hp eurorack synthesizer. Effectively, Trinity performs as 3 powerful drum voices packaged into one beastly drum module with a few tricks up its sleeve.

In this video we will explore the 4 drum synth algos...

BLOCK (Analog Inspired): Drum synth building blocks featuring sine and triangle core. Great for traditional electronic drum creation.

HEAP (Additive): Additive drum synth with 12 partials. Great for fun natural sounds and pitched percussive sounds (i.e. bells, chimes, steel drums, and wood blocks etc.).

NEON (FM): FM drum synth engine. Great for high quality FM drums, clangorous metallic percussion and more.

ARCADE (Noise): Quirky noise generator synth, reminiscent of classic 1980's arcade games sounds - zaps, crashes, explosions etc. Great for claps, hats, even some vinyl noise approximations, and all sorts of fun percussive and degraded noises.

Modbap TRINITY Overview - Cycle Modes & Stack Modes

video upload by

"In this video we will explore the Modes...

Cycle Modes
The cycle modes can be enabled and disabled per channel.
‘Round Robin’ mode will switch between each drum synth type sequentially with each new trigger to the drum channel.
‘Random’ mode will generate a new random drum sound with each new trigger to the drum channel.

Stack Modes
The stack modes group the channels together allowing 2 or 3 drum channels to be triggered by the primary channel’s trigger and v/oct inputs.
Stacked drums can be spread out similar to unison mode on a traditional synthesizer. Stack modes are inspired by the characteristics of chopped breaks where drums tend to overlap and fan out depending on the content of the chopped source material.
