Free L.A. Synth Expo Returns to Echo Park with Increased Modular presence

RSVP Here "After the 2018 launch, which brought over 1,000 musicians to a warehouse in Echo Park, the free Los Angeles Synth & Pedal Expo will return on September 28-29, 2019 in the same space on West Temple Street, in collaboration with local stores Analogue Haven, Noisebug and Truetone Music.

The involvement of Modular specialists Analog Haven and Noisebug (selling most products at a discount for the occasion) boosted the presence of Eurorack builders: this year there will be an entire room dedicated to the format.

A larger space will host the large format synth companies (see floorplan), where many established builders will have the opportunity to showcase their latest products.

There's a lot of curiosity, in particular, for the new ASM Hydrasynth and the EarthQuaker Devices Eurorack version of their Afterneath Reverb. Their presence at the show will represent some sort of West Coast debut. Tangible Instrument will also showcase the soon to be in production prototype of the company's new synth.

As usual, the show will feature a rich presence of pedal manufacturers. The stompbox format in recent years has developed in creative ways that have attracted the attention of the more creative synth players, with devices by companies like EarthQuaker Devices, Red Panda, Meris and Chase Bliss Audio (among others), whose effects will be represented at the LA show.

Like all the other Synth & Pedal Expos, there's no charge at the door. Here's the list of confirmed manufacturers

Mystic Circuits Portal - Wave Wrapping Distortion

Published on Aug 1, 2019 Mystic Circuits

"Portal is a wave wrapping distortion from another dimension. Similar to a wavefolder, Portal multiplies the harmonics of a signal going through it. However, instead of the output wave being folded over on itself once the input hits a certain threshold voltage the output will jump back to zero, creating a sharp transition almost like the wave has traveled through a Portal.

With three different simultaneously available flavors of distortion and four control voltage inputs, Portal is ready to transform just about anything into a perverse distortion of its previous form. From crunchy lows to piercing hisses and unparalleled squelch, the Mystic Circuits Portal is what you need to add intensity to your musical palette."

Mystic Circuits TREE // Next level bidirectional sequential switch

Published on Apr 5, 2019 DivKidVideo

"Here's a lovely little thing in the form of TREE from Mystic Circuits. It takes basic sequential switching up a gear with the addition of CV addressed direction, reset and 3 additional binary inputs to jump around the pattern creatively. It's been an interesting and inspiring piece of kit allowing you to perform with patching for cable led patch programmed functionality (that's a mouthful) to manipulate the switching and patterns you can create. In the video we distribute one sound to multiple FX, switch and re-route rhythms and modulation, explore audio rate functions, create Casio CZ style multi-cycle-waveforms, build a CV sequencer and more. Fun times.

TIMING INDEX / SECTIONS

00:00 hello and patch previews
00:57 Feature run down
02:28 Switching rhythmic patterns

Mystic Circuits Tree - Advanced Sequential Switch

Published on Mar 12, 2019 Mystic Circuits

"Tree is all about possibilities. A sequential switch with 8 positions that yields limitless paths between them, driving Tree with multiple clock sources can automatically create new sequences not easily made by hand. The clock, reset and backwards inputs drive Tree like a normal sequential switch with control over the direction of the sequence, whereas the “shift” inputs perform binary addressing of the steps with all 6 clock inputs available for simultaneous use. Featuring bidirectional inputs and outputs, when the common node is unplugged it is normalled to a high voltage allowing Tree to be used as a gate sequencer. The Turing Machine expansion port in the back allows for future expansion of Tree’s capabilities, including the ability to be used as a note sequencer."

New Mystic Circuits 0HP Envelope

Published on Jan 15, 2019 Mystic Circuits

"Dont let the name fool you, this module is quite a bit more than just an envelope. Patch in a gate and your output will behave as a normal sustain- release envelope, staying high while the gate is high and slowly decaying once it goes low. Patch in audio and you have an envelope follower, extracting amplitude data from whatever signal is coming in. Patch in any positive control voltage and you have a slew, adding glide whenever the incoming voltage falls. All three modes boast voltage control over the release/ response time and can use the on board input mult to either daisy chain multiple envelopes or to extract amplitude data from an audio input and then send the audio somewhere else. Possibly our most useful 0HP module yet."

ANA by Mystic Circuits

Published on Aug 21, 2018 Mystic Circuits

"At it’s core, Ana is a collection of ring modulators and other signals based on these ring modulators. Two inputs to Ana yield six outputs, each one a different process of these two inputs. By varying one of the front panel controls, all six outputs are changed simultaneously. If you have been looking for a slim, multi-function device to add both utility and a dose of weirdness to your workflow then Ana is the swiss army knife module for you."

Additional details via Mystic Circuits

"ANA is a utility module comprising six functions that combine two inputs. These functions are:

MIN – compute the minimum of the two input voltages

MAX – compute the maximum of the two input voltages

VCA – compute the XOR, or multiplication the two input voltages

MAG – compute the difference between the two input voltages.

STEP – perform a track and hold based smooth/ stepped process from the two inputs

BOX – perform a bipolar comparator process resulting in a 3 level square wave.

Mystic Circuits 0HP Low Pass Filter (passive LP VCF)

Published on Aug 20, 2018 DivKidVideo

"TIMING INDEX / SECTIONS BELOW. First of all I should apologise for calling the Timbre control Drive all the way through the video, total brain fart my end on that one. Here's the new Low Pass Filter from the 0HP line of passive utilities/modules/mini-wizards (whatever you want to call them). It's a low pass filter with cut off and timbre control and a single input and output. I go through how it sounds, sequence it, modulate it (audio rates too), play drums through it and make drones with it. Check out the other 0HP videos below and feel free to skip through the video at the timing index links below too. Cheers!

TIMING INDEX

00:00 welcome, hello, patch previews

01:05 What is it? Features etc

01:36 Low pass filter sound - filtering squares and adjusting cut off and timbre
