Oberheim OB-12

via this auction

Not the best shots, but I was just thinking you don't see these often. I'm curious how many were made. For those new to the OB-12, it was a virtual analog synth by a company named Viscount who mainly made organ synths. They licensed the Oberheim name and made the OB-3 and OB-3 squared organ modules as well as the OB-12. The prototype OB-12 was white. Update: link updated.

Synth Stuff Ep. 63 - Dave Smith Instruments OB-6

Published on Dec 15, 2019 tritonrecordings

"Boy did I ruffle some feathers when I mentioned this synth on my Matrix 6 video... Let's clear the air - this is an excellent synth. Sounds good, flexible, built well, and it's Oberheim-ish. My problem with it is that it doesn't sound as close to an actual OB series Oberheim as the name and blue-lines paint job would suggest. It's more like a polyphonic SEM, maybe? If I give my Matrix 6 a little chorus, I can get it to sound pretty close to an old OB8. The OB6, however, still sounds like a Dave Smith synth but with some Oberheim flavor added. In short, it didn't live up to the name. BUT...it's still a great synth. I always say I like the Prophet 6 better, but always reconsider when I spend time with one of these."

Update: That would be because the OB-6's filter is based on the multi-mode SEM filter, while the OB-Xa and OB-8 are the CEM3320 VCF. See this post for a good sonic comparison between the OB-6 and OB-Xa. They are pretty close, but definitely different. The OB-6 isn't supposed to be an OB-Xa or OB-8. The OB-6 has a 2-pole SEM multimode filter, while the Xa & OB-8 have a switchable 4-pole and 2-Pole filter. It's the 4-pole that "mellows out" the Xa and OB-8. You have to turn the mix levels down on the OB-6 to approximate that.  Because the Xa and 8 lack the multimode SEM filters so they are not capable of of what the OB-6 and SEMs can do. The OB-6 is likely closest to the OB-X which was closer to the SEM for its voice boards. So... they are all different, but overlap in some ways. After checking out the comparison video, check out this video. It's worth noting later renditions of Oberheim synths become more and more mellow sounding compared to the SEM, OB-X, and even OB-Xa. The OB-8 is considered more polite and the Matrix-6 and 1000 were considered budget versions with the same general character but lacking the heft that made the early Oberheims classics. The Matrix-12 is said to be somewhat lacking in girth as well, but it makes up for it with its nearly modular modulation matrix and VCOs compared to DCOs in the 6/6R and 10000. I've owned the Xa, Matrix-6 (hence the matrix alias), the Martrix-12, the OB-6, and a TVS Pro. They all sound fantastic. The OB-6 sizzles compared to the others.

The Classic Oberheim OB-8 - Basic Programming Tutorial - Updated

video upload by Andy Whitmore

"The Classic Oberheim OB-8 - Basic Programming Tutorial

The Oberheim OB-8 is a subtractive analog synthesizer launched by Oberheim in early 1983 and discontinued in 1985. As the fourth product in the OB-series of polyphonic compact synthesizers, the OB-8 was the successor to the OB-Xa. The number of production was about 3,000 units.

The OB-8 features eight-voice polyphony, two-part multi-timbrality, a 61-note processor-controlled piano keyboard, sophisticated programmable LFO and envelope modulation, two-pole and four-pole filters, arpeggiator, external cassette storage, MIDI capability and 120 memory patches, 24 bi-timbral patches, and used the Z80 CPU. OBERHEIM OB-12 VIRTUAL ANALOG POLYPHONIC SYNTHESIZER

via eBay and Reverb.

The listing states: "This blue beauty is Oberheim's virtual-analog version of the classic sounds and tone of the original Oberheim synthesizers, with some additional modern features."

The OB-12 actually does NOT sound like a classic Oberheim. That said, it is a good sounding VA with it's own character. It excels at strings and pads as well as some harsh and abrasive sounds. Be careful with the resonance turned up high. It can be ear piercing in a way not found on other synths, except maybe the Akai AX-60. The OB-12 was a Viscount synth.

Modded Oberheim OB-12 w/ Custom White Knobs

via this auction

"Excellent condition OB-12 modded by the Blue Lantern guy.

From the original auction in August 2016:

"Up for sale is a customized oberheim OB-12 viscount synthesizer. The following modifications were done by myself:

-main output upgraded to hi-fidelity LM4562 dual hi spec op-amps.
-aux out upgraded to hi-fidelity LM4562 dual hi spec op-amps.

-Graphic LCD replaced by modern black and white color. Contrast Knob installed for manual contrast adjusting on the fly. The adjuster has a soft rubber knob, locatied near the screen.
-led replaced with colorful type. UV, BLUE, WHITE, ORANGE, YELLOW on most of the menu related and FX related sections.
-Knobs upgraded to hi spec cream color knobs with brass inserts.

I have the keyboard, and the USA power plug. The manual can still be downloaded online.

The synth looks great however, the analog output doesn't work. No headphone, no main, no aux. The digital output works fine. It should be a simple repair to get a new D/A converter in it, however, it has never bothered me. Making allowances for a repair in the price."

15:16 OB-6 filter mode patch variation with MIDI Mod (with built-in chorus and delay)
18:06 Outro with OB-X8 and OB-6 (Notch Dream patch and OB-6 filter mode patch with delay)

If you have an OB-X8 and you're not using the Page 2 features, you're missing out on half the synth. Nobody seems to talk about these features or explore them. The OB-X8 is indeed a very versatile synth capable of many different timbres, not just the classic sounds from the original OB series. There are so many things you can do with modulation envelopes, LFO phase inversion, different SEM filter modes, and layering, just to name a few things. The OB-6 is limited by comparison. I find it pretty frustrating to use sometimes after making sounds on the OB-X8. It does have other tricks up its sleeve of course, and it sounds beautiful. It's definitely its own brand of OB with its own flavor. Similarly, the addition of 3 SEM filter modes and ability to mix and match OB-8, OB-Xa, and OB-X components and features make the OB-X8 its own beast, and I feel like a lot of people don't really appreciate that. It is so much more than a reissue.

Rant aside, my main motivation for this was to see how close I could get to emulating an OB-6 filter mode sweep. I think I got pretty good results here regardless if the sound is close or not, but I'll let you be the judge. Let me know what you think. There's no way to match perfectly because the filters sound different, and I believe a lot of it has to do with the differences in the oscillators, and maybe gain staging. The OB-X8 filters are more aggressive, with more prominent resonance. Crank the resonance on the OB-6 with the filter in the notch position. It barely does anything. Do the same on the OB-X8 and you'll hear those "sing-song harmonics" as you sweep the filter. And although they're not as loud as they are in the other filter modes, they are still very noticeable. There is also something magical about the high pass filter in the OB-6. Again it might be due to the oscillators. I find the high pass on the OB-6 very comforting, not that the one in the OB-X8 is bad in any way at all. It's just different. I also find the notch filter in the OB-X8 to be more "chewy". This is probably the result of it being more aggressive. In a battle of the filters, I'd choose the OB-X8 for lowpass and notch, and the OB-6 for bandpass and highpass. Anyway, I'm sorta ranting again.

Ultimately, I hope you enjoy these sounds and if you have an OB-X8, I strongly encourage you to explore all of the Page 2 features. I'm sure you've noticed that I have the pinstripe overlay for my X8. While I do prefer the pinstripe look, I really got it because it has the Page 2 function labels on it, and this is huge for me. Page 2 doesn't have to be menu-diving, it can simply be shift functions, which tons of synths have and they're easy to use. Having the labels and changing Page 2 parameters on the panel is a game changer for me. I don't have great eyes, so the small screen can get tiresome after awhile. If you don't want to splurge for the overlay (it's pretty expensive), maybe there's another option for adding labels to your synth. For me it's totally worth it.

Lastly, I think I may have inadvertently ripped someone off in the outro. It sounds like it could be from a movie, but I can't place it.

Enjoy the video.

Vintage Oberheim OB-8 Synthesizer w/ Aftertouch Mod, Break Out Box & More

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is a premiere example of a vintage Oberheim OB-8 synthesizer. It is cosmetically and functionally in great condition, and features a few custom mods that you will not find on any other vintage Oberheims for sale. It also comes with the original owner's manual, a super heavy-duty custom transport case, and a custom dust cover. I will list all of the details below:

Modifications (Please check out demo video I have attached to this listing):

This OB-8 has had some truly one-of-a-kind modifications done to it. They were done by the previous owner in between 2013-2016, but fortunately he gave me some of the original receipts for the work, which was done by two well established companies at the time -"Retro Linear" and "New England Analog". For all of the purists out there who cringe at the sight of any mods being done to a classic synth like this, this may not be the synth for you... but I personally found that these mods take the playing experience of this OB-8 to another level.

The first mod done was replacing the original keys with a Fatar keybed. This keybed plays extremely smoothly and effectively - it is quite easy to do runs up and down, and the keys are also not clicky and operate quietly.

On top of this, a very unique mod called "Pyxis Aftertouch" was installed which adds aftertouch to the fatar keybed! This aftertouch is routed to a very ingenious system that plugs into the back of the OB-8 via two small jacks. The system allows you to control various parameters of the aftertouch such as LFO speed & wave shape, filter cutoff, VCA settings like volume or tremolo, & more. This aftertouch system has a main module with knobs/switches for adjusting these parameters, and there is also a second touchpad module you can use to trigger these parameters. I showed examples of using this aftertouch mod in the demo video I included in this listing. You can see me using the aftertouch to trigger an increase in LFO speed/intensity at 0:21 and 0:55. At around 2:10 I demonstrate the aftertouch in combination with the portamento (which is an amazing feature of the OB-8). It can get a little wild sounding (2:12) if the portamento is a slow build ! At around 3:00, I use the touchpad module, which does the same thing as the keyboard aftertouch.

Oberheim OB-12 Synthesizer with New Display

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"These synths have to be one of the best looking synths ever, and they sound good also, with a lot of hands on control. I think the main complaint people had/have with the OB-12 was that it didn't sound like an original, analog Oberheim. I don't have experience with an original analog Oberheim but I think the OB-12 sounds great and is a lot of fun to play with. History seems to be treating this synthesizer kindly and the prices for them have been creeping up for years."

The PPG 1003 "Sonic Carrier" - World's First Programmable Synth?

via Wolfgang Palm on Facebook
Be sure to see the video below.

"This was the first programmable synthesizer (1977)."

Programmable as in patch memory. The 1003 was a programmable monophonic synth with two oscillators, digitally controlled keyboard, and it was duophonic.

But was it the first?
