Pre-Acid 303 - Early Roland TB-303 Tracks

The subject of a TB-303 revival came up on the Analog Heaven mailing list. The discussion lead to some sharing the first tracks featuring the 303, including of course pre-Acid tracks. The following are a few of them including a couple by Alexander Robotnick I tracked down. They are in order of release by year ending with Phuture's "Acid Tracks", credited as the first Acid track ever, for good measure. Wikipedia on Acid. If you know of any others pre 1987, feel free to comment or shoot me an email and I'll add it to the post. I know there was a track which used the 303 as a traditional bass guitar, but I forget what it was.

Update: Two from Heaven 17 via Pea in the comments added to the top:

Control Synthesis Deep Bass 9

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The Deep Bass Nine was commissioned (circa 1994) by UK-based second-hand retailer FX Music Control as an alternative analog mono-bass-synth to satiate the demand for the Roland TB-303. Yes, this is another TB-303 clone. It's very simple and straightforward with basic controls that mirror those found on the TB-303. It's also a true analog MIDI-controlled bass synth with plenty of thumpin' bass potential of its own.

The DB9 is a single-unit rack module with all ten of its knobs on the front panel. There are no hidden menus. Just like the TB-303, the DB9's single oscillator offers two waveforms to choose from - a sawtooth or square wave. That is followed by the 303-cloned Tuning, filter Cut Off Frequency and Resonance, Env Mod, Decay and Accent knobs. Additionally you can set the DB9 to one of the 16 standard MIDI channels, and you can set it to use its external audio input instead of the oscillator allowing you to process external audio through its analog filter (inputs and outputs are mono).

Speaking of filters, the DB9 uses a 24 dB/oct filter which sounds great. It also has a limited frequency cut-off control and a strong resonance control. The resulting sound, although not quite as sharp in the mid range as a TB-303, seems much more deep and warm.

Of course, since the DB9 has no on-board TB-303-like sequencer, MIDI control is essential. The all-import Accent feature of the TB-303 is controlled here by MIDI note velocity - and turning up the Accent knob dials in how much it affects, not the volume of the note, but the filter's frequency and loudness. There is a hidden Glide control, although this is more like a portamento that seems to add some extra release on the envelope.

The Glide and the Cut Off Frequency are the only two parameters that can be controlled via MIDI CC. None of the knobs output MIDI CC data, which means all live control changes need to be performed and/or recorded live. The DB9 also has a built-in CV/Gate converter with inputs and outputs. So it can either be used with some older pre-MIDI equipment you may have or it can be used to bring certain pre-MIDI equipment into the world of MIDI.

The DB9's real strength is that it has its own natural and warm unique sound which has many sweet spots. The sawtooth and square waves are very thick and full sounding, and you can push the resonance right up till it howls. It sits in a mix very well too, so it makes for an ideal dedicated bass synthesizer module. And if you're after something to make some real analogue acid, look no further."

MAM MB 33 with Original Box

via this auction

"Analog Monophonic Bass Synthesizer with MIDI...

The MB 33 is a rack-mounted TB-303 clone released in the mid-nineties by German synth maker MAM (Music And More). It's basically a re-packaged Freebass 383. It is a true analog monophonic bass synthesizer with MIDI implementation so you can create 303-like bass lines from your sequencer. Its single VCO offers the same two basic waveforms as the TB-303: a sawtooth and square wave. But in the MB 33 they can be mixed together for a more interesting tone than the 303 could originally produce.

Additional knobs control the VCO tuning, filter frequency cutoff, resonance, envelope mod amount, envelope decay time and accent intensity - the same controls found on the TB-303! The 24dB lowpass filter can also produce the characteristic sound of the 18 dB filter used in the original 303. There's also an auto-slide function (4 octave range) for producing those 303-style slides and a separate input for filtering external signals through it.

MB 33 mkII
The MB 33 mkII (pictured above) released in 1998 adds a few more features. The 24dB filter has been replaced by an 18dB filter just like the original TB-303 used. A new sub-oscillator was added and can be mixed with the other two waveforms for even meatier mono-bass sounds. A new distortion effect is also present and can be dialed-in to dirty things up - sounds great when resonated at high frequency cut-offs! MIDI can send/receive controls for the cutoff, resonance, ENV mod, accent, decay, distortion, and autoslide on/off."

"For sale here is something that has been close to my heart for many years. I have used these synthesizers countless times in my albums as The Flashbulb, Acidwolf, Human Action Network, and many more aliases. I have used them at gigs such as DEMF, Sonar, and Bangface, and cared for them as if they were my infant children.

That's why I'm selling them. The TB-303 is in excellent condition. It's rare to see one this clean. I'm about to move my studio for a 3rd time in 5 years and simply feel anxious about keeping it in this condition through moves and various applications. I'd rather use my cruddy, old 303 than risk devaluing this one. As my favorite synth, I've also used this thing too much. It's time to pass the torch on, per say.

Enough about my stupid headcase and on to what's for sale.

1 original TB-303. Incredible condition. It's very clean (note that I didn't dust it for the pictures, for the sake of honesty). There are signs of wear around the cutoff and resonance knobs, and the volume knob is ever-so-slightly scratchy as the potentiometer reaches it's 33rd birthday. There's a couple very minor scratches on the back, the original battery door is there, and still latches perfectly. I have tested it on both battery and 9v wall power, and it works just dandy.

1 original TB-606. Unlike the 303, the 606's cosmetic condition reflects its age. It's missing the battery door and a knob, has a couple scratches, and could use a date with a q-tip and some cleaner. Everything is 100% functional, but the volume knob is scratchy, a bit more than the TB-303. Functional on both batteries and wall power.

1 really ugly, but virtually indestructible custom made foam case. I made it myself about 13 years ago out of a tool case and some custom memory foam I ordered. It's ghetto looking, but if you ever feel like running over your TB-303 and TB-606 with a car, this will probably keep you making music with them.

If you're a fan of my music and don't care about the authenticity, I'll sign it. I'll cringe while getting the marker and spend about 10 minutes deciding where to sign it, but your wish is my command. I could also ship it with the batteries if you want the original patterns for S. Kedzie Theme. :)"

Spectralis: Attempting a Roland TB-303 sound

Published on Feb 14, 2013 acemonvw·8 videos

"DISCLAIMER: I've never seen (nor heard) a Roland TB-303 in person (excluding audio recordings), nor really sought out the sound (why am I doing this then? See below). I'll change the title if this in no way resembles the sound of the TB-303. Youtube demo's and sound design forums only tell you so much. Now, who would want an RT Spectralis when the Roland TB-303 is cheaper? Well... it's not cheaper. It's vintage, thus expensive and sought after (the original, at least). It is what it is, it's different than the spectralis, but if you already have the spectralis, perhaps you can get that TB-303 sound. Any thoughts on improving this sound? Let me know, I will make a video of how to make this sound if indeed it sounds similar, but will also take suggestions on improvements. Enjoy (further details below)!

Someone on the Radikal Technologies forums suggested a tutorial on recreating that TB-303 sound. Of course, with no prior knowledge of the synthesis involved, I looked it up and found a Access Virus thread on the subject (see below). Basically, the spectralis doesn't have the right filter. It has a 24dB LP filter (which doesn't open all the way) and a MultiMode 12dB LP/HP/BP filter. I set my oscillator through the MM filter, using the LP portion (specifics below). I then decided to just make a long video and got carried away. One thing I learned on this adventure: INDIVIDUAL PANNING FOR EACH FILTERBANK FREQUENCY!!!!! I used that for OSC3 and OSC4... it was fun and completely unrelated to the TB-303 sound I was going for... Enjoy!

Custom x0xb0x bassline synthesizer

via this auction
"This x0xb0x is an analog subtractive acid bassline synthesizer designed and engineered by ladyada of Adafruit Industries. It is modeled part-for-part after the legendary Roland TB-303.

"The TB-303 (named for "Transistor Bass") was originally marketed to guitarists for bass accompaniment while practicing alone. Production lasted approximately 18 months, resulting in only 10,000 units. It was not until the mid- to late-1980s that DJs and electronic musicians in Chicago found a use for the machine in the context of the newly developing house music genre. -- From Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roland_TB-303, retrieved 22 Aug 2009

The 303 remains to this day a popular instrument in many kinds of music from most forms of electronica to pop and alternative and many others as well as the genre it created: acid house. x0xb0x is considered by many to be the most authentic reproduction of the classic 303 sound because it contains the same analog circuits and parts as the original TB-303. The x0xb0x improves upon the 303 by being easier to use and offering a much wider range of features and capabilities.

That said, if you're viewing this auction, you probably already know about the x0xb0x and what it does so without further ado, let's discuss why you would want this x0xb0x. This particular x0x has been carefully constructed and modded by your truly, a self-professed geek with years of combined electronics training and experience using quality tools."

MidiBass 303 - the ultimate 303 midi retrofit

Someone asked how to copy pattern on a Roland TB303. The general recommendation was unfortunately older than old school - pen and paper. There is a way you can step through the pattern you want and copy the new pattern referring to it, but most thought pen and paper were easier and more reliable for reference. However punkdISCO pointed out Colin Fraser's MidiBass 303. Title link takes you to more including a sample.

MidiBass 303

"The problem is that if you want to keep hold of your favorite patterns, but your memory is full and you want to create some more, it can be tricky and time consuming to accurately transcribe your patterns for re-entry at a later date...

To solve these problems, I have developed the MidiBass 303 midi interface.
This interface provides both midi output from the 303 internal sequencer, and midi input to drive the 303 synth section, along with midi clock in and out."

Acid take 2 - Roland TB-303, Jomox 999 & Analogue Systems

YouTube via bigcitymusic
"We love the Roland TB-303 (who doesn't?), so we went nuts with some Analogue Systems rs95 oscillators, triggering them with the CV and Gate outputs from the 303. The sound of the 303 is given additional balls by processing it through the Malekko B:Assmaster Germanium pedal...sacrilege. You can hear the TB-303 without extra balls at the very end between 6:12 - 6:18.

Along with the A.S. rs95 oscillators we're also using the rs110 Multimode Filter, the rs120 Comb Filter, and the rs100 Low Pass Filter.

The drums sounds are from the behemoth Jomox XBase 999 and we're using the Kenton Pro Solo MIDI-CV converter to sync the 303. One of the cymbals from the Jomox is running through the A.S. rs310 Reverb/Chorus module, which is being modulated by the rs80 LFO's triangle wave. The rs290 Sample/Delay module is providing the delay for that cymbal as well. All of these sounds are being mixed by the rs165 Signal Mixer."
