Click here for pdf scans of various synth brochures and articles. I tried to list all models below. Apologies for the long list but if you are searching for this stuff via your favorite search engine, this is the only way it'll come up, and finding that oddball rare scan can be absolute gold.

Roland SH-101 and CR-8000

YouTube Uploaded by DonSolaris on Jul 12, 2011

"Short (minimalistic) demo made only with SH-101 and CR-8000. Delay was provided by Boss DE-200. I should note that i modified my CR-8000 with individual outputs. Therefore, your CR-8000 might not sound like this, as each channel was separately EQ-ed (on a Soundcraft desk). No compression was used."

Roland CR-8000 Drum Machine

via this auction
"The CR-8000 CompuRhythm was released right after the famous TR-808. The both machines feature the same sound engine for similar sounding instruments. Unfortunately they can't be edited on the CR-8000, although users have reported successfully adding their own decay and pitch modifications to the unit.

The sequencer offers 8 32-step user programmable patterns, 24 preset rhythms and 12 fills/intros (4 user). The beats are programmed by choosing the instrument and then entering the pattern step-by-step with 2 buttons (on/off).

Other controls include volume, tempo, accent and individual levels for the instruments.

There are pedal control inputs , a trigger output and DIN sync for synchronizing the unit with other machines."

Roland CR-8000

via this auction
"The Cr-8000 has very similar sounds to the Tr-808, some are identical, like famous handclap and cowbell sounds.

It's programmable and also has many cool presets. It can be synced or be the master sync with it DIN-sync connector, making it compatible with the Tr-606, Tr-808, Tb-303 and others. It can also be synced to MIDI with a DIN-sync to MIDI converter (as sold on eBay).

This unit has a serial number starting with 08, meaning it was produced in june 1981, all Cr-8000 models were produced in 1980-1981.
It comes with a printed copy of the manual"

"The CR-8000 is a very nice analog machine from the classic era, it shares some of it sound with the legendary TR-808 and can also be programmed. In addition it has a nice selection of patterns that can be combined and modified by adding and removing different instruments with the top row buttons.

Overall its a very useful studio tool once synced via its Dinsync input. Alternately it can be the center of your setup if used the classic way with its Dinsync and triggers outputs.

I've just installed a set of fresh Duracells for the pattern memory, these should be changed every year or so to retain patterns.

If you were looking for a CR-8000, this is probably the one to get as it's unusually good shape and was recently looked over to make sure it works for years to come!.."

Roland CR-8000 Analog Drum Machine User Programing

YouTube via SantaElena. via synthzoom.
"This is a quick demonstration of user programing on a Roland CR-8000 Analog Drum Machine.

First I show how to clear a pattern by holding the note and rest buttons at the same time until the LED for the selected user program blinks, it takes about 3 seconds.
Then I select the Bass drum and program a pattern. Each sequence uses 32 steps, on step 1 and 17 you have both red and green LEDs lit over by the start stop button. On steps 5,9,13,21,25,29 you have just the green LED lit, indicating quarter notes of the 2 bar pattern.

Then I program a hihat pattern, and while paying that I use the Preset instrument pattern buttons to add a clap and some cymbal variations. Each of the top most buttons only adds one instrument in a preset pattern and overrides what you have progamed as long as it is engaged. Very easy to have pattern variations on this machine.

You can erase any individual instrument pattern by just selecting that instrument and pressing rests through the pattern, but you can also just program another pattern over it the notes / rests you punch in will be saved.

There are some other cool tricks in this machine, like selecting two patterns to play at the same time, the programmable and preset Intro/fill in patterns (4 user patterns, 32 steps each) with the auto fill in being able to set the to play every 2, 4, 8, 12, or 16 measures, or off to trigger it manually, if you hit the manual button with the machine stopped, it will play the intro pattern then go into the selected pattern. The rest button becomes a crash button when in play mode, so when switching patterns or coming out of a fill in a crash will sound on the first beat.

The Register button becomes a A/B pattern kind of thing where you select a Preset or user pattern, or any pair of patterns to play simultaneously, then press the Register button and it flashes, and you pick one or two other patterns, then during playback, you hit the register key and it will switch between the two sets.

The register button has a foot switch jack in the rear, and the unit also has a trigger out which is selectable between 8 note, 16 note, or accent pattern (programmable trigger!) the manual has a really cool trick where you connect the triger out to the register footswitch and select two different patterns to get toggled by the trigger.

Really nuts machine. Makes me think twice about auctioning it.

be sure to check out the videos showing the controls on the top. coming soon."

"Here is a very nice example of a Roland Compurhythm CR-8000. This one was set up for the British market using 220 volts. It now comes with a brand new, heavy duty transformer that allows it to work with 110 volts (USA current). The little Chiclet buttons are notorious for intermittent operation and this rig was displaying just such symptoms. So we sent it to Gumi Electronics in Nashville (Google him) and he did his $190 (plus shipping) magic on all the buttons. It now works as new (maybe better than new). Included is a manual we downloaded and a new Roland DP-2 pedal. We got this from the guy who bought it new in England and brought it back to the US. It was then in storage for many years before it was traded in..."

Synhouse MIDIJack DINSynth

via Synhouse

"The Synhouse MIDIJACK DINSYNC is designed specifically for Roland x0x DIN sync machines (also known as sync 24). It receives MIDI start messages, MIDI stop messages, and MIDI timing clocks, allowing you to synchronize those techno classics to your PC or Mac software MIDI sequencer or other hardware MIDI sequencer. It does not receive MIDI notes. A lot of techno musicians believe that there is something about the quirkiness of the drum / bass sequencing on a TR-808 and the programmed accents and slides on a 303 that simply cannot be duplicated on a MIDI sequencer. With the properly installed MIDIJACK DINSYNC on those machines, they can run alongside your MIDI tracks in perfect sync. The MIDIJACK DINSYNC is designed to be compatible with the following machines:

Roland SH-101 *
Roland MC-202 Microcomposer
Roland TB-303 Bassline
Roland TR-606 Drumatix
Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer
Roland CompuRhythm CR-78 *
Roland CompuRhythm CR-8000 *
(It also includes the TR-707, TR-727, and TR-909 but they already have MIDI).

* The MIDIJACK DINSYNC is designed to be compatible with these machines but Synhouse has not yet had the opportunity to do a test installation on them. It may have been tested by someone in the field unknown to Synhouse. "

Sampling Vintage Rhythm Machines [INCLUDES FREE SAMPLES]

Published on Sep 12, 2019 Alex Ball

"I love the sound of old analogue rhythm machines, but I always wanted to be able to program them like my drum machines. Without the knowledge or skill to modify them, I thought that maybe multi-sampling them would give me what I was after.

I’m over the moon with the results and I think that the Kontakt multi versions sound awesome. Hopefully you’ll have fun with them too!

Download: http://bit.ly/RhythmMachines

Bit of background: Although the earlier rhythm machines were intended to accompany lone musicians (mainly organists) and were controlled with start/stop footswitches, they do crop up in a few records.

The “Cha-Cha” preset from the TR-77 appears in Ultravox’s “Hiroshima Mon Amour” and it’s apparently the (rather processed) rhythm machine heard at the start of Squeeze’s “Take me I’m yours”. The seemingly popular “Cha-Cha” also appears at the start of Duran Duran’s “Girls on Film” albeit at a different pitch (perhaps done with tape speed).

The earlier version of the Rhythm 55B (the Rhythm 55) was also the very unit used by Joe Jackson on “Steppin’ Out”. In fact, he’s recently been bringing it out on tour with him: [below]

The Korg is a bit of a hanger on being released in 1982 given that 808s, LinnDrums and DMXs were out by then. The Roland CR-5000 and CR-8000 also snuck into the 80s, but they were really at the end of this kind of instrument that had its heyday in the late 60s and 70s.

Instruments used in this video:
Roland Rhythm 77 / TR-77 (1972)
Korg Rhythm 55B / KR-55B (1982)
Roland SH-1000 (1973)
Korg MS-20 (1978)
ARP Odyssey model 2813 (1975)
Roland Juno-6 (1982)"

Roland JP-8000 Demo | Roland JP 8000 Programming Session

YouTube Uploaded by VisceralVoids on Aug 4, 2011

"Starting from a patch I made, looking for sounds on the JP-8000 getting lost along the way. I was looking for a sound and found it after this recording was made.

I am using the 12db band-pass filter alot, as well as the 24db low-pass sometimes to find the base of a sound. Sometimes I use RPS to get sound ideas when going during this rough programming session. Once I got the JP to sound like a CR-78 beat but I made a mistake and ended up not saving it like a JP-8000 noob.

JP-8000 tricks:
In the performance options you can detune the parts from one another aside from the detuning that goes on in the oscillators. So I have both parts stacked like this with polyphony set to 4-4 in the performance options. This gives you four oscillators and four LFOs. LFO 2 is tied to the mod stick and I have not even set it up yet in this video. One thing I have not tried is the splittable arpeggiator. I used the supersaw on alot of this video.

The DVD Owner's Manual is worth checking out, it will also give you a good ideas on how to program sounds you want.

Velocity assign and ribbon assign are two more insane things about this synth, and I am still learning many of its features. For example you can assign PWM Shape to the ribbon controller or velocity. The manual is easy to understand and it's where I learned about the performance part options that can be detuned and set seperate from the oscillators altogether. This is how you can get four different LFOs or two different arpeggiators happening.

Final thoughts:
Many synths have an interface that blocks you from attacking the impulse to edit sounds - with the JP-8000 I feel you can really create patches easily. I thought the JD-800 was great for electronic music but the JP-8000 is incredible in this regard. It is more more modern and aggressive than the beautiful digital JD-800. Within a day of starting to learn programming on the JP-8000 I made once of my favorite synth sounds from a 1981 Genesis song, which is the first patch used in this video.

Roland's JP-8000 is very good for 80's, progressive, electronic, ambient, hardstyle or hardcore techno, industrial or dance, or wild experimental synth sounds."
