Computer Rhythm CR-8000

Published on Jun 9, 2015 Miguel d'Oliveira

"I see the Roland CR-8000 as the granddaddy of the 808 (they share the same sound engine) and a beautiful machine to work with.

This track was recorded onto Ableton Live and processed a little bit.
Other instruments on this are a Nord Stage 2 + Roland Juno 6.
The CR8000 also got a tiny lift from a UBK FATSO."

Roland CR-8000 | Unboxing

Published on Dec 10, 2019 Doctor Mix

"Today I unbox the CR-8000 by Roland... in Canada!"

One of my favorite things to do when traveling in the late 90s and early 2000s was to hit pawn shops. There's just something about picking up a used synth and checking it out in the hotel room. Sound dirty.. I'd always have to go through a cleaning ritual.

Roland TR 66 Modified Pics and MP3!

via Matia who has it listed for sale at VSE. "Hello everybody. Here is a real treat. I spent quiet a bit of time modifying this vintage Roland TR 66. The rare TR 66 is a simplified Roland CR 78. Not all of the CR 78 sounds are present but you have enough of the essentials to work with. I have done several mod's to this machine: I've added trigger inputs on banana jacks on the rear panel for each instrument so that a trigger signal can sequence/trigger the machine. To do this I've bypassed the internal sequencer but I've left all the wiring in place so if someone wants to return the machine to it's default status, it can be done. I've also added a breakout box over a DSUB cable to give the user control over the synthesis of the internal drum sounds. Kick decay and tune can be adjusted, Tom decay's can be adjusted, the Snare has a snappy control, and the Conga has a tune control. I've left one knob free for the user to configure should you want to add an additional modification. Everything is in great shape and the machine sounds wonderful. I've included a little demo of what the machine is capable of. One note about the triggers: to fire the machine off you need to use negative pulses (this is true of most older drum boxes including the CR 8000). With some additional modification the user can make the trigger inputs work with positive pulses (see Justin's excellent burnkit page for more info). However, there are plenty of DIY and premade solutions that work with this machine (wether MIDI to cv/gate converters or dedicated pulse generators). I predominantly used this machine with the Serge modulars' Dual Transient Generator."

"This is a heavily modified version of the Alesis HR-16 drum machine from the late 80s/90s. I have developed my own custom PCB board to house all the modifications I carry out and to keep the design clean and robust.

I will also consider swaps/trades for gear that interests me, dead or alive.. ask me... :)

Most notable features added are:
Ability to quickly replace sound bank chips using the quick release sockets mounted to the top of the unit (compatible with any of the soundbanks I have in my other listings)
Full LTC1799 Pitch Modification, allowing you to change the overall pitch of the whole machine (can go SUUUUUPER slow (a snare can last around 7seconds) ) and also around 20% higher in pitch. It's also worth noting that all sounds can individually pitched/tuned also as standard. It makes for great turntable style slow downs etc.

Updatable STEREO DSP FX System, including Low and High Pass filters, Bitcrush, reverb, delays etc. Used in conjunction with the multiple outputs makes the machine super powerful. Endless fun or just use it to make the sounds a little dirtier..

Gorgeous solid walnut side panels really set the look of the machine off.

Turning Rhythm Machines into Drum Machines [INCLUDES FREE SAMPLES]

Published on Sep 12, 2019 Alex Ball

"I love the sound of old analogue rhythm machines, but I always wanted to be able to program them like my drum machines. Without the knowledge or skill to modify them, I thought that maybe multi-sampling them would give me what I was after.

I’m over the moon with the results and I think that the Kontakt multi versions sound awesome. Hopefully you’ll have fun with them too!

Download: http://bit.ly/RhythmMachines

Bit of background: Although the earlier rhythm machines were intended to accompany lone musicians (mainly organists) and were controlled with start/stop footswitches, they do crop up in a few records.

The 'Cha-Cha' preset from the TR-77 appears in Ultravox’s “Hiroshima Mon Amour” and it’s apparently the (rather processed) rhythm machine heard at the start of Squeeze’s “Take me I’m yours”. The seemingly popular “Cha-Cha” also appears at the start of Duran Duran’s “Girls on Film” albeit at a different pitch (perhaps done with tape speed).

The earlier version of the Rhythm 55B (the Rhythm 55) was also the very unit used by Joe Jackson on “Steppin’ Out”. In fact, he’s recently been bringing it out on tour with him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcEYA...

The Korg is a bit of a hanger on being released in 1982 given that 808s, LinnDrums and DMXs were out by then. The Roland CR-5000 and CR-8000 also snuck into the 80s, but they were really at the end of this kind of instrument that had its heyday in the late 60s and 70s.

Instruments used in this video:
Roland Rhythm 77 / TR-77 (1972)
Korg Rhythm 55B / KR-55B (1982)
Roland SH-1000 (1973)
Korg MS-20 (1978)
ARP Odyssey model 2813 (1975)
Roland Juno-6 (1982)"

Roland SBX-80 Sync Box and MSQ-700 Sequencer

via this auction
via the description:
"Roland SBX-80 Sync Box as well as a Roland MSQ-700. Terrific vintage relics from our musical past. The Sync Box offers many options for sending and receiving different beat sources. I purchased this piece originally to (DIN)sync a TR-808 and/or Roland CR-8000 Drum machines with a tap tempo. This also works well to tap tempo for arpeggiators inputs on any period synth (Jupiter 4, 6, 8, Juno-60, Korg Mono/Poly etc...). I am including a DIN/SYNC cable with this particular piece (looks like a MIDI cable but pin-configured differently). Also included is a Roland MSQ-700."

Seven Minutes - Buchla, Euro & a CR-8000

Published on Mar 18, 2015 DJjondent

"This a a mix using a combo of Buchla, Eurorack & a modded Roland CR-8000. It's mostly a live performance which has then been tweaked and enhanced in Ableton.
The main Sequencer is the 208r on 5 step mode.
Choices joystick is modulating the 208 and Braids.
Braids itself is used in a number of modes which are switched live on the fly. ...Including the pulsing 'chord' sound and the Vowel setting.

Roland CR-8000 CompuRhythm

via this auction
"Vintage analogue drums with preset and programmable drum sequences. This is the model before the TR-808 and shares some similarities but uses large button matrix to select different preset styles. everything works as it should. this is an old unit and so some discolouration on the case can be seen, along with a couple of tiny marks from use. (see pics for details) one preset button is a little sticky but comes good when used. This CR-8000 (pictured on right) has been heavily modified by a professional musician & veteran synthesizer guy. The work is top grade. mods include tonal mods and trigger/audio out interface, laminated overlay, BD with infinite sustain, overdrive and tuning effects, noise adjust and full control over most of the sound parameters of the machine. Also see: http://soundcloud.com/user7296796 [below] for sound examples of the ACTUAL unit. this is an awesome tweakable analogue drummie with din sync 24 input/output. another interfacing unit (pictured on left) may be available to the winning bidder by request 240 volt unit"
