Roland JUPITER-4 Software Synthesizer Overview | A Vintage Icon on Roland Cloud

video upload by RolandChannel

Follow-up to this post.

"No synthesizer collection is complete without the original JUPITER. The iconic ’78 instrument set the stage for synthesis power with “Compuphonic” technology enabling digital voltage control and the ability to store eight user presets. Now, you can get the warm, fat sounds of the iconic JUPITER-4 synth as a plug-in for your DAW or a PLUG-OUT for your SYSTEM-8. Using Analog Circuit Behavior modeling, we’ve recreated the authentic circuit behaviors of the vintage instrument, including all the quirks and instabilities you know and love.

The beloved instrument got some modern updates too. New enhancements take the JUPITER-4 sonic powers to another level, including extended oscillator range, adjustable noise, velocity sensitivity, sub-oscillator volume control, and a flexible arpeggiator. And in addition to the perfect modeling of JUPITER-4’s lush Ensemble chorus, you can dig into a slew of added effects, including phaser, flanger, overdrive, reverb, and delay.

If you’re a SYSTEM-8 owner, the JUPITER-4 Software Synthesizer offers full integration with your SYSTEM-8 keyboard. You can change the JUPITER-4’s plug-in panel to match the SYSTEM-8 for intuitive, one-to-one control. Or use the PLUG-OUT functionality to turn your synth into a standalone, eight-voice JUPITER-4 you can play in the studio or on stage.

Authentic Recreation of Roland’s First JUPITER Synthesizer, Now Available as a Legendary Series Plug-In and SYSTEM-8 PLUG-OUT Through Roland Cloud

Los Angeles, CA, June 16, 2022 — Roland announces the JUPITER-4 Software Synthesizer, the latest addition to the Legendary instrument series available through Roland Cloud. Released in 1978, the JUPITER-4 was Roland’s first polyphonic synthesizer and the first to carry the JUPITER name. With the JUPITER-4 Software Synthesizer, the authentic sound of this trendsetting icon is now available as a computer-based plug-in and a PLUG-OUT for the SYSTEM-8 synthesizer keyboard.

Roland products with the JUPITER name represent the current pinnacle of the company’s synthesizer development, a benchmark started over four decades ago with the JUPITER-4. In addition to incredible analog synthesis power, it brought then-revolutionary digital voltage control and the ability to store eight presets with technological wizardry dubbed “Compuphonic.” But the JUPITER-4’s real appeal was its warm, fat voice and inviting hands-on panel, which inspired synth pioneers to create the defining sounds of synth-pop, new wave, and other emerging styles of the late ’70s and early ’80s.

Roland’s evolving Analog Circuit Behavior (ACB) technology brings the JUPITER-4 to life through careful analysis of original hardware units, circuit diagrams, and other historical data. This information is then used to recreate the authentic circuit behaviors of the vintage instrument—including all the beloved quirks and instabilities—giving the JUPITER-4 Software Synthesizer a breathtakingly accurate sound that buzzes with unique character.

While the JUPITER-4 only has a single VCO, it sounds positively massive, thanks to the combined characteristics of its oscillator, filter, LFO section, and more. ACB brings all these elements together like the original hardware, capturing the behavior and component interactions to create sonic magic. Going further, powerful new Circuit Mod and Condition controls allow users to adjust the overall character to suit their taste.

The JUPITER-4 also includes enhanced features for modern workflows, including extended oscillator range, adjustable noise, velocity sensitivity, sub-oscillator volume control, and a flexible arpeggiator. In addition, phaser, flanger, overdrive, reverb, and delay effects are available to complement the lush Ensemble chorus effect from the original keyboard.

The plug-in flows easily into modern DAW environments with a resizable UI, support for VST3, AAX, and AU formats, and native compatibility with Apple silicon. It also offers full integration with the Roland SYSTEM-8 Synthesizer. Users can control the software plug-in from the keyboard’s panel, and PLUG-OUT functionality turns the SYSTEM-8 into a standalone, eight-voice JUPITER-4 for stage and studio playing.

Availability & Pricing

The JUPITER-4 Software Synthesizer is the newest member of Roland’s Legendary series on Roland Cloud, which includes plug-in versions of the JD-800, JUNO-60, JUPITER-8, TR-808, TR-909, and other Roland classics.

Users can select two Legendary titles with the Pro membership level for $99/year, or get full access to all titles with Ultimate membership for $199/year. All paid levels—including Core and Pro—start with a free 30-day trial of Ultimate, allowing users to try out the JUPITER-4 and other Ultimate instruments, effects, apps, and more. In addition, any Roland Account holder can purchase Lifetime Keys for individual Legendary series titles. This provides unlimited access for as long as their account is active, even if they don’t have a Roland Cloud membership.

The JUPITER-4 is part of the Analog Polysynth Collection, a new Legendary series bundle that also includes the JUPITER-8, JUNO-60, JX-3P, and JUNO-106 software plug-ins. The bundle provides Lifetime Keys for all included products and offers a savings of nearly 40 percent over purchasing individual titles.

"My friends--- I can finally say it: The Juno-X is HERE.
What an honour to be a part of the launch campaign with my friends at Roland. I am a huge advocate for the original Jupiter-X and all of its amazing capabilities, and the new Juno-X does EVERYTHING the Jupiter does in a more accessible and more inexpensive package--- it even has stereo speakers under the hood!

Roland JUNO-X - DEMO by gattobus: "Distant Memories"

video upload by gattobus

"Here is the new Roland JUNO-X!!!
Every sound you hear in this video comes from this instrument, no overdubs, everything's been played in real time using the 5 internal parts, iArpeggio and the step sequencer.
Inside of each unit that you will find in the stores, there's also a piece of me as I had the privilege to create a lot of factory tones, scenes and the new iArpeggio 2.0 patterns!
I put a lot of love into it and I'm so happy with the final result. I have never felt so good with a synth since System-8, my first real job for Roland. It's a great honour for me to collaborate with them.
This simple song that I played, is not just a demo, it's a declaration of love towards life, for the fact that it led me to do (at least for me) the most beautiful job in the world.
I would like to thank president Jun-Ichi Miki, Hisakazu Yamasato, Akihiro Nagata, Yoshinori Iwamoto, Gota Miyabashira and all the amazing people in Roland I've been in contact with during the last 5 years. You are like superheroes to me, you're really making my dreams come true.
I hope this is only the beginning.
Happy 50th Anniversary Roland!!! 🧡"

The Legendary JUNO Experience Reimagined with the Power of Roland’s ZEN-Core Synthesis System

Los Angeles, CA, April 26, 2022 — Roland announces JUNO-X, a new polyphonic synthesizer driven by the next-generation ZEN-Core Synthesis System. JUNO-X brings the best of the past together with Roland’s latest technologies, reimagining the vintage JUNO experience with vastly expanded sound possibilities and free-flowing tools tuned for today’s music. It delivers the full capabilities of the native ZEN-Core engine, along with genuine recreations of the JUNO-60 and JUNO-106 synths plus other legacy Roland instruments.

Standing among the greatest analog synthesizers ever created, Roland’s iconic JUNO lineup has had a massive impact on music for over four decades. The warm, organic sounds of the JUNO-60 and JUNO-106 defined countless ’80s pop hits and played a huge role in the emergence of techno, house, synthwave, and other electronic styles. JUNO-X delivers the vintage JUNO spirit that continues to inspire leading music makers, coupled with the power and versatility needed for modern workflows.

JUNO-X includes JUNO-60 and JUNO-106 Models, plus an all-new JUNO-X engine with a Super Saw waveform, velocity sensitivity, pitch envelope control, and other evolved features. The two beloved chorus modes from the originals are also available, plus a third mode with even more fatness and swirl. Users can combine them to create seven different chorus effects for use with any JUNO-X tone.

JUNO-X features additional Models from the historic Roland canon, including the PCM-based XV-5080, acoustic pianos from the RD series, and an expressive Vocoder. Model Expansions from Roland Cloud are supported as well, giving players the ability to load optional titles such as the JUPITER-8, JD-800, SH-101, Vocal Designer, and others.

Roland Cloud is also home to a growing range of Wave Expansions, Sound Packs, Sample Packs, and other creative tools, and ten free Sound Packs are available with a JUNO-X purchase. Additionally, JUNO-X provides integrated support for Roland Cloud Connect, a powerful option that includes the WC-1 wireless adapter and one year of Roland Cloud Pro membership. This allows users to browse, audition, and load Model Expansion titles and other Pro membership content directly to the keyboard via Wi-Fi.

A key element of the JUNO’s appeal was a straightforward interface that made it easy to craft inspiring sounds and evolving textures in the heat of the moment. With a familiar hands-on panel inspired by the original 1980s synths, JUNO-X invites players to fully immerse in the music and create without limits. Up to four tones can be layered together, and a wide selection of modern effects are available for enhancing sounds. First introduced with JUPITER-X, the powerful I-Arpeggio function offers both traditional arpeggio sounds and organic, inspiring movement driven by intelligent algorithms.

JUNO-X comes equipped with an expressive 61-note keyboard with aftertouch and loads of connectivity for every musical workflow, including balanced and unbalanced audio outputs, a stereo audio input, and MIDI I/O. There’s also a mic input for vocal performing or feeding the onboard Vocoder. USB is available for data backup, audio/MIDI communication with DAWS, and remote editing with the free JUNO-X Editor for macOS and Windows. A high-quality stereo speaker system provides built-in sound monitoring, and Bluetooth® is available for streaming music from a mobile device.

Availability & Pricing

The Roland JUNO-X Programmable Polyphonic Synthesizer will be available in the U.S. in May for $1999.99."

--- Original post prior to the above follows (pics replaced with hi res versions - click them for the full size shots) ---

This is just breaking - no press release or info on Roland's site yet. Until then, some pics and features. As you can see this one is based on the Juno-106 design. The UI is as important as the engine and it looks like Roland may have nailed this one. The one problem with the original Juno-106 are those BA662A voice chips that fail over time. I've had a couple go and they are not simple to replace. You have to unsolder multiple pins on them to remove them.

What's interesting is it appears Roland is releasing classic physical designs with overlapping synth engines. The JUPITER-X has the JUPITER-8, JX-8P, JUNO-106, SH-101, XV-5080, RD, Vocoder, and ZEN-Core engines. The Juno-X has JUNO-106, Juno-60, XV-5080, RD, Vocoder, and ZEN-Core. So the X adds the Juno-60 but is missing the Jupiter-8, JX-8P, and SH-101? The Juno-X adds built-in speakers like the Jupiter-Xm. Interesting they note the speakers were inspired by the Juno-60 below. The Juno-60 did not have built-in speakers. The Juno-106S and SynthPlus 60 did.

Features:

Over 4,000 presets from historic Roland products including the JUNO-106, Juno-60, XV-5080, RD series of pianos, and classic vocoder model

Model Expansions incorporate even more Roland history and sound-design technology to offer nearly endless options for sonic exploration

Newly engineered Super Saw oscillator, Chorus III effect, and more use ZEN-core Synthesis to deliver a worthy holder of the Juno gauntlet

Layer up to 4 different sounds for unparalleled tone design opportunities

Intuitive interface enables straightforward sound design and modification

Ergonomic arrangements encourage breezy workflow, setup recall, and preset management with Scenes (up to 256 global setup presets)

Free Juno-X Editor software is included to give you even deeper access to making your sounds your own

Classic design and robust hardware seamlessly blend satisfying tactility with precision control

Aftertouch and assignable sliders and switches provide great range of expressivity

Retro arpeggiator and I-Arpeggiator can be freely toggled to allow for greater rhythmic flourish
USB audio/MIDI interface and USB memory port for data backup, computer connection, and more

Onboard stereo speakers (inspired by the Juno-60) and Bluetooth compatibility make it easy to jam along to any accompanying track

Dedicated microphone input includes its own effects to model inputs and vocoded sounds

Multi-effects suite includes multiple forms of reverb, delay, chorus, EQ, compression, and overdrive

Output jacks for hold and control pedals allow for expansion of expressive control

3.5mm and 1/4-inch headphone outputs, L/Mono and R 1/4-inch main outs, and L/R XLR outs

The press release:

Powerful New Creative Tools for Owners of the JUPITER-X and JUPITER-Xm Synthesizers

Los Angeles, CA, November 16, 2021 — Roland announces two powerful creative tools for all JUPITER-X and JUPITER-Xm synthesizer owners. The Vocal Designer Model Expansion brings the company’s acclaimed vocal synthesis technology to the JUPITER-X range, opening up a new world of expressive possibilities with the dynamic character of the human voice. Roland Cloud Connect unlocks instant access to an ever-expanding universe filled with thousands of iconic sounds and expansions using just a mobile device and the included wireless adapter.

Vocal Designer Model Expansion
The most expressive instrument in the world is the one inside us all—the human voice. With the Vocal Designer Model Expansion, players can add the warmth and expression of their voices to synthesized sounds, complete with deep customization options to craft unique and memorable tones. Roland has a long history in vocal synthesis, including the famous VP and V-Synth keyboards. Now, the Vocal Designer Model Expansion brings the pinnacle of this powerful technology to the JUPITER-X and JUPITER-Xm.

After connecting a microphone to the rear panel of the JUPITER-X/-Xm, the Vocal Designer Model Expansion allows all types of synthesizer sounds to be controlled and modulated with vocal input. This enables the performer to create otherworldly textures that blend the organic expression of the voice (the modulator) with a synthesized tone or instrument sound (the carrier). The Vocal Designer Model Expansion includes 26 different vocal synthesis algorithms with a wide range of customizable options. And any ZEN-Core tone can be used as a carrier, offering a staggering number of sonic possibilities.

In addition to all-new sounds, the Vocal Designer Model Expansion offers classic vocoder sounds derived from the legendary VP series, including choir and ensemble tones, robot voices, and more. And despite its name, the Vocal Designer Model Expansion isn’t just for voice. It’s possible to use nearly any analog audio or USB input source as a modulator, including drum machines, guitars, circuit-bent toys, DAW audio tracks, or anything the user can imagine.

Roland Cloud Connect
Roland Cloud Connect is a powerful new system that revolutionizes sound expansion for the JUPITER-X and JUPITER-Xm, providing wireless access to new sounds on demand. After plugging the included WC-1 wireless adapter into their instrument, owners can use the iOS/Android mobile app to browse, audition, and install Sound Packs, Wave Expansions, Model Expansions, and more from Roland Cloud. There's a comprehensive search engine for compatible content, and selections automatically synchronize with the user's Roland Account and Roland Cloud Manager software on a desktop computer.

The purchase of Roland Cloud Connect provides an entire year of the Pro membership tier of Roland Cloud. Included is unlimited use of over 30,000 sounds, plus the Vocal Designer Model Expansion and other Model Expansions for hardware or software instruments. There’s also a full library of authentic Roland virtual instruments for DAW production, including ZENOLOGY Pro and Legendary series titles like the JD-800, JX-8P, JUNO-60, TR-808, TR-909, and many more. And for creating on the go, the Zenbeats and Zentracker music production apps are available as well. After the first year, users can renew or scale their membership up or down to meet their needs.

Support for the Vocal Designer Model Expansion and Roland Cloud Connect is included with the free Version 2.0 update for the JUPITER-X and JUPITER-Xm.

Roland TR-707 & TR-727 Come to Roland Cloud

Roland TR-707 & TR-727 Software Rhythm Composer Overview; Two Classic Drum Machines on Roland Cloud video upload by RolandChannel

"Since their release in 1985, the renowned TR-707 and TR-727 Rhythm Composers have been the heartbeats of tracks in a range of genres including synth pop, acid house, industrial, electro, indie, alternative, and more. Now, thanks to Roland Analog Circuit Behavior technology, you can have the authentic sound and experience of these influential drum machines right inside your DAW—with modern upgrades for your workflow.

Great care went into replicating the sound and experience of the original TR-707 and TR-727 hardware with some added modern enhancements. For the sounds, we started with the original PCM ROMs found in these classics, then used our advanced circuit modeling to recreate the PCM output stage, including all its unique quirks and instabilities. Plus, you’ll get tuning, decay, PCM clock adjustment, and other parameters that aren’t present on the original units.

The updated sequencer allows you to add even more detail and nuances to your grooves. Open the sequencer’s expanded edit panel and discover individual sequencer lanes with mute, solo, last step, and adjustable shuffle for each instrument. Per-step accent is included, and each step can trigger hard or weak hits, alternate sounds, three types of sub-steps, and nine types of flams.

13:30 Roland Cloud Legendary Plug-Ins"

And the press release:

"Los Angeles, CA, September 2, 2021 — Roland announces the TR-707 and TR-727 Software Rhythm Composers, the latest additions to the Legendary series of software-based Roland instruments available through Roland Cloud. Brought to life with Roland’s advanced Analog Circuit Behavior (ACB) technology, these plug-in instruments bring the authentic sound and experience of the influential mid-1980s TR-707 and TR-727 Rhythm Composers to computer-based music production and performance workflows.

In 1985, Roland introduced the now-famous TR-707 and TR-727, the company’s first drum machines with all sounds based around PCM samples. The TR-707, with its orange livery, had the most advanced pattern sequencing capabilities to date and included 15 punchy drum sounds covering all the basics, from kick and snare to toms and cymbals. Its sibling, the blue-highlighted TR-727, was an all-out percussion powerhouse with 15 Latin-inspired sounds that could take any groove to new heights. Each unit was formidable on its own, but together they were unstoppable.

Taking their rightful places next to other classics in the Roland TR series, this dynamic duo of drums and percussion has appeared on hit tracks in many genres through the years, including synth-pop, acid house, industrial, electro, indie, alternative, and more. The software-based recreations reproduce their sound and behavior with 100-percent authenticity, coupled with modern upgrades that take them into all-new creative territory.

The playback engines in the TR-707 and TR-727 were primitive by today’s standards, with 25 kHz sample rates and 8-bit resolution (and even 6-bit for some tones). To optimize performance, Roland engineers used short PCM waveforms with decay introduced later in the analog circuitry. But this early hybrid approach had its limitations, with deviations in the digital clock and analog circuitry causing variances in the pitch and decay characteristics. This combination of factors strongly contributes to the charm of the TR-707 and TR-727 and their unique and pleasing lo-fi punch. To replicate these behaviors in software, Roland started with the original PCM wave data from the hardware. Next, ACB technology was used to recreate the interaction between the PCM engine and analog output stages, carefully including all its quirks and instabilities.

The software-based TR-707 and TR-727 also include many updated features inspired by popular aftermarket modifications. Users have deep levels of sound control unavailable with stock hardware units, including attack, decay, and tuning for individual sounds, the ability to overdrive the internal circuitry, and much more. Additionally, the sequencer features include numerous modern enhancements for infusing grooves with added detail and nuance.

The TR-707 and TR-727 Software Rhythm Composers are part of Roland Cloud’s Legendary series, which offers plug-in versions of Roland classics like the TR-808, TR-909, JUNO-106, JUPITER-8, D-50, and many others. Legendary titles are available with the Ultimate membership level of Roland Cloud. All paid levels—including Core and Pro—start with a free 30-day trial of Ultimate, allowing users to try out the TR-707 and TR-727 and all other Ultimate features. In addition, any Roland Account holder can purchase Lifetime Keys for individual Legendary series titles. A Lifetime Key provides unlimited access for as long as their account is active, even if they don’t have a Roland Cloud membership.

Availability & Pricing

The TR-707 and TR-727 Software Rhythm Composers are available to purchase now from Roland
Cloud as a Roland Lifetime Key for $149 each, and are included with the Roland
Cloud Ultimate membership."

The JD-800 Model Expansion is currently supported with Roland’s ZENOLOGY and ZENOLOGY Pro software instruments and JUPITER-X and JUPITER-Xm hardware instruments.

Roland’s PLUG-OUT format is also supported for computer-free operation via the SYSTEM-8 hardware synth, with all parameters automatically mapped to capture the hands-on JUNO-60 workflow.

The JUNO-60 Software Synthesizer is just the latest member of Roland Cloud’s Legendary series, which includes plug-in versions of the JUNO-106, JUPITER-8, TR-808, TR-909, D-50, and many other classics. Roland Cloud is also home to an ever-expanding collection of creative tools to keep your music flowing, including the powerful ZENOLOGY software synth, Model Expansions, Sound Packs, Zenbeats, and much more."

And the press release:

Iconic 1980s Polysynth Now Available as a Legendary Series Plug-In Through Roland Cloud

Los Angeles, CA, February 16, 2021 — Roland announces the JUNO-60 Software Synthesizer, the latest addition to the Legendary series of software-based Roland instruments available through Roland Cloud. The original Roland JUNO-60 hardware synth helped define the sound of ’80s music and is still highly prized for its vintage vibe and unmistakable character. With the JUNO-60 Software Synthesizer, the authentic experience of this influential keyboard is now available as a modern software instrument for Mac and Windows DAWs.

Released in 1982, the JUNO-60 was among the earliest models in Roland’s iconic JUNO series, and is an all-time favorite for many synth aficionados. With a winning formula of a single DCO, fat sub-oscillator, and characterful VCF—plus a massive swirling chorus effect—the instrument has found its way onto innumerable tracks through the years. Powered by Roland’s proprietary Analog Circuit Behavior (ACB) technology, the software version recreates the sonic experience and approachable architecture of the JUNO-60 in startling detail, allowing users to craft rich, inspiring sounds with little effort.

The JUNO-60 Software Synthesizer fully captures the original’s balanced magic—including the odd quirks and charming limitations—and enhances it with useful modern additions. The filter has been modeled to perfection, and users have the ability to switch to the HPF circuit of the next-generation JUNO-106 and its characteristic bass bump. The oscillator range has also been extended, and there’s a second envelope for extra flexibility. Polyphony has been expanded to eight notes, with the option to limit it to the original’s six (or less) for an old-school vibe.

A huge part of the JUNO-60 sound is its lush chorus circuit. Like the original, the software version has two push-button chorus modes, plus a third “secret” mode accessed by pressing both buttons at once. Taking things further, there’s an additional chorus option with the sound of the vintage BOSS CE-1 pedal, along with a selection of reverb, delay, flanger, and overdrive effects.

The JUNO-60 Software Synthesizer is VST3, AU, and AAX compatible and also supports Roland’s PLUG-OUT format for computer-free operation with the SYSTEM-8 hardware synth. And for DAW-focused workflows, it’s possible to use the SYSTEM-8 or a Roland Boutique JU-06/JU-06A for one-to-one, hands-on control of the JUNO-60 plug-in.

The JUNO-60 Software Synthesizer is just the latest member of Roland Cloud’s Legendary series, which includes plug-in versions of other Roland classics like the JUNO-106, JUPITER-8, TR-808, TR-909, D-50, and more. Legendary titles are available with the Ultimate membership level of Roland Cloud. All paid levels – including Core and Pro – start with a free 30-day trial of Ultimate, allowing users to try out the JUNO-60 and all Ultimate features. In addition, any Roland Account holder can purchase Lifetime Keys for individual Legendary series titles. This provides unlimited access for as long as their account is active, even if they don’t have a Roland Cloud membership.

If you are curious why the JUNO-60 is available as a PLUG-OUT for the SYSTEM-8, but not the Jupiter-X or Jupiter-Xm, the SYSTEM-8 uses ACB (Analog Circuit Behavior) technology, while the Jupiter-X and Xm use ABM (Analog Behaviour Modeling) via Roland's new ZEN-Core engine. The following touches on the differences between them.
