Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

There have been other SUIKO synths to be featured on the site before, however, this appears to be the first ST-70. These appear to be non programable preset type players. You can find some demos of other models in the archives.

confined spaces #3

Published on Apr 18, 2020 wildchurch

More obscure Japanese gear.

"All Hail the Eye tone

"See your pitch!"

Manufactured by Fuji Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., the Eye tone is an aide to vocal training - plug in a microphone to get visual feedback via it's 2 lamp system. One shows you are within range, the other lights up when you are 'spot on'.

This function, however, lends itself well to monitoring drones. Here, I use it to track pitch coming from a variable speed tape player as I attempt to glide between tones and 'enhance my multi-tasking abilities' beyond their infancy.

Sounds:
O2 Minipops
Hougaku Conductor with step sequencer
2 cassette tape players modified for variable speed:
- one playing a drone, the other birdsong
Suiko ST20 - Shakuhachi/Koto/Pipe Organ 'synth'

Effects:
Aria spring reverb on O2 Minipops
Lots of Korg SDD-3300 on the cassette players
The Hougaku Conductor runs through a Roland VX-66 Echo Mixer and the Suiko ST20 through an ELK EM-13 Analog Echo, before the main mixer"

TUCKER/80年代の和風シンセサイザー「曙」(あけぼの)どこを触っても和風な音しか出ないこの楽器で作曲する試み。

"A synthesizer for traditional Japanese music made in the 80s.

An attempt to compose with this instrument that only produces a Japanese sound no matter where you touch it"

I didn't realize GAKKEN went that far back. See the Gakken and SUIKO labels below for more. Not sure if that's a SUIKO in the first video above, but it looks like one.

SUIKO ST10 Japanese Synth

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Super rare SUIKO ST-10 synthesizer and sequencer.

Monophonic synthesizer with highly unusual data cassette drive sequencer.

You can use the data cassette (like an Apple II or Commodore 64!) to save sequences, and you can change the sound settings in real time as the sound plays back. Includes a new cassette for you to record your sequences to.

I included a SONY Car Cassette to Aux Adapter so you can mess with the sequencer by playing white noise, synth tones, etc through it to data bend the cassette drive. You can also use pre-recorded cassettes to mess with the sequencer. Tons of fun!

There is also a built in digital sequencer with built in memory.

Has three basic sounds that can be modified. You can use the pitch knob to do some interesting pitch bend effects as you play. There is a setting to control the decay of the note as well.

Keyboard is meant for traditional Japanese music, so the layout of the keys is in traditional Japanese scale.

Could also be used for microtonal music, as there is a slider that can shift the pitch up in a 1/4 tone increment.

Everything has been fully tested and works, except for one switch that is stuck. This switch is meant to flat or sharp one note in the scale to slightly modify the scale. This is a minor feature and doesn't effect the operation of the rest of the keyboard. Likely an easy fix."

Suiko ST-20 & Strymon BigSky // Dreamy Japanese Sound (short sound demo + jam)

video upload by Dexba

"I am always been fascinated by Asian instruments, and in fact, I even own and play an original koto.
So, when I found out these Suiko things existed, I immediately felt the need of owning one.
It came from Japan, it's vintage (seems like they where produced in small number during the 80s) and it sounds kinda awful without reverb, to be honest.
The koto sound is quite harsh, and it doesn't really sound like a real koto, since it has no polyphony, no way to 'prepare' the pitch bend, no velocity sensitivity, and the overall sound is quite poor.
Then there is the flute, quite a nice one, and a very screaming organ that gets annoying pretty soon.
But, as soon as you add a reverb, possibly a good one, you get back some sort of polyphony, you iron out the roughness, and even the limitations can become useful tools!
Enjoy! ✨"

SUIKO ST20 japanese classic exotic KOTO synth

via this auction

"SUIKO ST20 is extremely rare and most strange japanese electronic musical instruments originally made for japanese traditinal music circa. 1980.

it's built in cool brown custom suitcase like EMS synth, one side of the suitcase is a speaker so you can play without external amp or mixer but don't worry it has audio output too. keyboard itself is built in beautiful brown metal plate, look cool!

these keyboards were very expensive and made very limited quantities those days so i'ts very hard to find even in Japan nowadays... this is your first and last chance to get this vintage gem!

it has 2 rows of button keyboard this keyboard specially designed for playing glissando easily like koto(japanese harp) front row of the keyboard is japanese scale,so just playing randomly you can easily get exotic japanese melody!

there are various switch and dial for special japanese tuning and sustain and octave switch three sounds are selectable, shyakuhachi(japanese bamboo flute),koto(japanese harp) and pipe organ sounds are very analog, warm and strange!"

The rarest Japanese synthesizer? | Suiko ST-50

HAINBACH

"In which I demo and make music with an obscure synthesizer made for the Japanese traditional music market, the Suiko ST-50. Created to accompany poetry, the ST-50 is a beautiful and strangely timeless instrument. Its haunting sound and unusual playing style set it apart from many other instruments."
