Moog Subsequent 37 Officially Replaces the Sub 37 Tribute Edition - Comparison Video & Demos

Subsequent 37 | Precision Audio Analysis Published on Aug 28, 2017 Moog Music Inc

You'll find a playlist of Subsequent 37 sound samples featuring Cory Henry further below. First the official announcement from Moog Music:

"Aug. 28, 2017, Asheville, NC -

In the spirit of continuous improvement, the award-winning Sub 37 Tribute Edition has been discontinued from production to make way for a new standard: THE SUBSEQUENT 37. Implementing upgraded sonic modifications and functional improvements, the new SUBSEQUENT 37 will become the standard production model moving forward.

To illuminate the enhanced sonic vocabulary of the new SUBSEQUENT 37, Moog’s Chief Engineer, Cyril Lance, is joined by Snarky Puppy’s Cory Henry in the Moog Sound Lab. Using an Audio Precision analyzer and an oscilloscope, Cyril Lance compares the audio outputs of both the original Sub 37 and SUBSEQUENT 37.

The SUBSEQUENT 37 is a (2-note) paraphonic analog synthesizer with double the mixer headroom of the Sub 37. This provides access to a new range of classic clean tones in both mono and duo performance modes. Leveraging the mixer’s newfound flexibility, the gain-staging of the Ladder filter has been reshaped to boost harmonic saturation and analog compression, resulting in an overall richer low end. Completing the sonic evolution of the SUBSEQUENT 37 is a re-tuned Multidrive circuit that extends well beyond the grit and growl of the original Sub 37.

Each of the enhancements found in the SUBSEQUENT 37 maintains the magic and character of its predecessor while also providing access to new dimensions of sound and improved playability.

In addition to the sound engine augmentation, each SUBSEQUENT 37 comes with an upgraded keybed for improved playability, a high-powered headphone amplifier strong enough to drive the most demanding headphones, and a software plugin/editor for both Windows and Mac platforms.

The Subsequent 37 is already shipping from the Moog Factory and is currently available through Moog Dealers worldwide for $1499."

Note there are two version of the Subsequent 37, the standard black for $1499, and the limited edition CV white for $1799:

If you are a Moog Sub 37 owner you will be able to upgrade to the Subsequent 37 feature set. Note this is a hardware update. Via Moog:

"We recently released the Subsequent 37, an updated version of an already wonderful instrument in the original Sub 37 (MusicTech.net’s Gold Award winner for 'Best Hardware' 2015, and 'Best Keyboard/Synth of 2016' from SoundOnSound). We hope that you will continue to enjoy your Sub 37 in light of the new Subsequent 37 release, as they are both excellent tools for creative expression, each with their own sonic flavor.

If you feel that you would prefer the features of the Subsequent 37 over the features of your original Sub 37, we will be offering an upgrade option for existing Sub 37 owners (we’ll need a little time to get the parts together). You can signup below to receive an email once the full details are available. In the meantime, please continue to enjoy your Sub 37—it is a fantastic instrument on its own merit and will bring you countless hours of enjoyment.

Love,
Your friends at Moog"

Moog Announces New Limited Edition SUB SEQUENT 37 CV for Moogfest 2017

A new white beauty from Moog. The SUB SEQUENT 37 CV adds four assignable CV outputs, two assignable Gate outputs, an upgraded keybed, a high-powered headphone amplifier for live-monitoring, and a modified analog signal path.

Full details via Moog Music:

Today we are excited to announce the SUB SEQUENT 37 CV. This limited-edition redesign of the ultra-powerful Sub 37 Tribute Edition analog synthesizer is limited to 2000 pieces worldwide, with the first 125 units built live on-site at Moogfest 2017. Anchored by a pair of solid aluminum side pieces inset with North American hardwood and affixed to a rugged steel and aluminum enclosure, it features four assignable CV outputs and two assignable Gate outputs for interconnectivity with large-format and Eurorack modular systems, an upgraded keybed for improved playability, a high-powered headphone amplifier for live-monitoring, and a modified analog signal path.

'We are really excited to incorporate community feedback into the evolution of an instrument. Adding CV interconnectivity was the starting point, but we have also increased the headroom in the mixer and significantly extended the range of Multidrive, giving the SUB SEQUENT 37 CV expanded sonic capability and modular control.' - Cyril Lance, Moog Chief Engineer

The SUB SEQUENT 37 CV’s mixer now has double the headroom of the Sub 37 Tribute Edition. Taking advantage of the mixer’s newfound flexibility, the gain-staging of the Ladder filter has been reshaped to boost harmonic saturation and analog compression. Completing the sonic evolution is a re-tuned Multidrive circuit that extends well beyond the grit and growl of the original Sub 37.

SUB SEQUENT 37 CV production is limited to 2000 pieces worldwide. Each instrument is lovingly handcrafted by Moog employee-owners. The first 125 units are available for purchase exclusively through Guitar Center during Moogfest 2017, May 18-22, and on guitarcenter.com .

Moog Sub 37 / Subsequent patches Vol 2 (free download)

video upload by Marcus Padrini

"6 years ago (time that passes frighteningly fast), with just over 30 days playing with the Moog Sub 37, I posted a video bringing a free bank with some patches I programmed. It's about time to share some more sounds created on this fantastic synth!

So here's my new patch bank for Sub 37 and Subsequent 37, which combine versions of patches from bands I've always liked or played and totally original sounds, demonstrating different Sub 37 features!

Download: https://tinyurl.com/sub37v2

In the video, the first version is always without any effect. The second version of each patch can feature chorus, reverb and delay. All fx processed by Zoom MS70CDR!

Tom Sweep - Sub 37 version for this classic Rush patch
Aquatarkus 1 - Based on timbres from live ELP recordings
Aquatarkus 2 - Based on the original recording
Hoedown - Sub 37 version of this classic ELP intro
Lead Duo - exploring the duophonic side
3D Space - different modulations for a more rhythmic tone
Blade intro - Sub 37 version of the classic by Vangelis
Delle Fate - based on the beautiful Italian prog band lead
From the beginning - Modular adaptation to Sub 37 of the ELP classic
Ice - inspired by the lead from the classic Camel band
ResoDistort - drive, paraphony and resonance for this ideal tone for diverse solos.
Rick in the 70s - daring to create a version of Wakeman's classic, using the 6db filter slope
Lady Fantasy - classic arpeggio by Camel
Random Increment - fun with the sequencer
S&H Sequence - Sequence with Modulations and Sample & Hold"

"We are extremely pleased to announce Volume II for the Moog Sub/Subsequent 37! Last year we released Volume I, '73 for the 37', which consisted of 73 patches in total. Volume II completes the bank with another 64 brand new patches. We've also added 28 additional complimentary patches to the mix for a grand total of 165 patches! In Volume II we tried to focus more on leads and basses. According to the categories, you get 22 leads and 12 basses, but many of the sounds in the other categories are also up to the task. We spent a considerable amount of time working with the envelopes' key tracking and velocity settings to really make these patches spring to life under your fingers. The modwheel, aftertouch and velocity assignments are extensive and produce an extremely enjoyable playing experience. Moog Sub 37 First Test (with Light Show!)

Published on Aug 13, 2014 GenshiMediaGroup

"This is my first quick test of the new Moog Sub 37 Tribute Edition synth. Recorded into 4 tracks of Ableton Live, all sounds you hear are the Moog Sub 37 exclusively (including the simple drum beat.) I did add a touch of delay on the lead synth sound using the Strymon El Capistan dTape Echo pedal. I also included the "Light Show" mode at the end of the video; synchronized with a patch I programmed."

Moog Sub 37 Tribute Edition - Test #02 (with more Light Show!)

Published on Aug 15, 2014 GenshiMediaGroup

"Another quick test of the Moog Sub 37... nine tracks recorded live into Ableton Live.

All sounds including the beat are from the Moog Sub 37 only (with a touch of delay from the Strymon El Capistan on two of the synth parts.) I tried to show a wide variety of sounds, from classic soft leads to crunchy distorted bass, as well as some filter and modulation tweaks.

And this time, instead of recording me actually playing each part (which is a pain in the butt to do) I thought I'd spare you all from having to look at my ugly hairy arms... and show more of the Light Show mode! As always, a good pair of headphones are highly recommended."

73 for the Sub 37

Published on Jun 21, 2019 Robust American Patches

"New Patches for the Sub 37. "73 for the 37" to be exact. Nearly every patch in this collection comes complete with modwheel, aftertouch and velocity assignments. These sounds are meant to be played and programmed to be extremely expressive. You get 64 patches + 9 more for free. The Sub 37 has a special place in our little studio and in our hearts here at Robust HQ. It was the first modern synth we acquired during this analogue synth renaissance that we find ourselves in."

Playlist:

1. 73 for the 37 Demo Song
This is a "one synth" song produced with the Moog Sub 37 and our first bank of patches for this mean little mono/duo. (73 for the 37) Many happy hours spent with this amazing tone machine. I managed to get 15 different patches into this 2 minute song. Recorded and mixed in Nuendo via the Audient ASP-880. We ended up with 18 tracks as one patch was double tracked and another was used to create some 3 note chords.
2. Moog Sub 37 Presets by Robust American Patches! (Part 1)
3. Moog Sub 37 Presets by Robust American Patches! (Part 2)
73 for the 37! No Talking. (All sounds in this demonstration were recorded into Nuendo at 24Bit/44Khz through an Audient ASP-880) Some of the lead sounds in this video have a subtle stereo echo in the mix for a little ambience. As always, the preset names are burnt into the video. We recommend listening on the best speakers you can muster as laptops simply do not reproduce the frequencies you need to hear.

Moog Sub 37/Roland Juno 106 (Live Synth Jams)

Published on Jun 14 - 29, 2016 Jae Ryan

1. Moog Sub 37/Roland Juno 106 (Live Synth Jam 1)

Synthesizers:
-Moog Sub 37 (Sequence)
-Roland Juno 106 (Unison Sub Bass Patch)

Effects:
-UAD Roland RE-201 ("Stereo" Delay)
-UAD Lexicon 224 (Stereo Reverb)

Recorded live on 14/06/2016!

2. Moog Sub 37/Roland Juno 106 (Live Synth Jam 2)

A little sunday synth jam featuring the Moog Sub 37 on "lead" and the Roland Juno 106 on some pad type textures.
I really fell in love with the Sub 37 when I realized that 1. Turning the oscillators past 5 will bring them into the "Sub Distortion" zone but if you keep them below 5 it's much much easier to get smooth, classic Moog sounds. I am a bigger fan of the latter. And 2. Being able to route both mod busses to the mod wheel opens up a ton of expressive playing options. Although the patch I designed in this video doesn't really show it off, I just had to mention it. Having filter cut off and vibrato working together is beautiful!

I recorded this using an Apollo Twin and a few UAD plug ins, most notably the Studer Tape Machine, Lexicon 224 and LA-2A!

Recorded live on 27/06/2016!

3. Moog Sub 37/Roland Juno 106 (Live Synth Jam 3)

Basic little jam I had today soundtracking the storm outside my apartment! Massive Lexicon 224 reverb and Moog triangle waves :)

Recorded live on 29/06/2016!

Aerated Distortion: synth track criada com Moog Sub 37 e MPC One

video upload by Marcus Padrini

Tudo sequenciado no MPC One.

This is the case with the track Aerated Distortion, created from a Dave Smith Tetra preset, with a sequence from Arturia Keystep pro, strings from the Behringer VC340 and lead from the Moog Sub 37. Moog Sub 37 - Duo Mode Improvisation

Published on Aug 16, 2014 Zach Ashcraft

"Duo Mode is an incredibly welcome addition to the Moog Sub 37. The ability to play two notes at once opens up the door to a wide array of new musical possibilities. I loved this more mellow sound, and just wanted to improvise on a harmonic progression. I'm adjusting the filter cutoff throughout the change the timbre. The sub-oscillator is dialed in just a bit.

Recorded through the Apogee Duet. No other effects, EQ, compression, etc. applied. This is straight out of the Synth."

1. Bach WTC Book 1, Fugue 2 on Moog Synthesizer
A performance of Fugue No. 2 from The Well-Tempered Clavier, book 1 by J. S. Bach. All sounds are created with a Moog Sub 37 analog synthesizer and Reaper.
2. Bach, "Mein Jesu" on Moog Synthesizer
This performance of J. S. Bach's Aria, "Mein Jesu," was created with only a Moog Sub 37 analog synthesizer and the Reaper DAW. The arrangement is based on the string orchestra setting by Leopold Stowkowski.

Commonly performed during Lent, the lyrics describe the anguish of Jesus Christ in the garden of Gethsemane on the night before his crucifixion. Bach masterfully captures the scene with rich harmonies and a mournful melodic line.

Mein Jesu! Was für Seelenweh befällt dich in Gethsemane
3. Bach WTC Book 1, Prelude 6 - featuring Moog synth EDM
Bach meets EDM. This performance of the Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1, Prelude 6 features a Moog Sub 37 analog synthesizer accompanied by Kontakt 5. Everything was recorded and mixed in Reaper.
4. Purcell, Rondeau from Abdelazer, 8-bit version on Moog Synthesizer
The famous Rondo from Henry Purcell's incidental music to Abdelazer, realized in the style of 8-bit computer game music. Square waves and white noise provided entirely by a Moog Sub 37 analog synthesizer. This is the same rondo that Benjamin Britten used as the source material for his Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra.

The sound of this almost makes you wish that Abdelazer was a real RPG...
5. A Musical Guide to the Synthesizer (Moog Sub 37)
A short demonstration of common synthesizer waveforms and basic filter/LFO effects. Tutti passages bookend short examples of square waves, sawtooth waves, and triangle waves. 100% of the sounds you hear were produced on a single Moog Sub 37 analog synthesizer and mixed in the Reaper DAW.

This video features an arrangement of Purcell's famous Rondeau from the incidental music to Abdelazer. This was also the source material for Benjamin Britten's "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra. Britten's work is copyright protected, so the form of this arrangement is based on Purcell's original design. I'm sure knowledgeable listeners will still appreciate the homage.

___
Creating sounds with the Moog Sub 37 is something natural for me. From the first day I got this little monster in 2014, I could not resist experimenting with it and applying all my knowledge of sound design to it.

As a beta tester for Moog, I’ve been building these presets while testing their new OS and software editor.

The result is a collection of 35 presets containing Bass, Leads, Percussions, FX and other amazing sounds!. Some of these sounds have been created to be also played with the modulation wheel and aftertouch. If you’d like to experiment beyond and also learn the logic behind, these presets are a good starting point for it.

Check out the video to get a more accurate idea of how they sound like.

And please, feel free to leave your thoughts about them and suggest presets you would like me to do in the near future.

Moog Sub 37 + Slim Phatty Polychain #1

Published on Sep 27, 2015

"I put together a little demo of my Moog Sub 37 polychained with two Slim Phatties. The video begins with some random attempts at playing chords (I have no playing skills) and moves into knob tweaking while using the Sub 37's step sequencer. All sounds are coming straight out of these three units only, with the exception of some reverb that was added within NI Maschine. Anyway, hope you enjoy, as I plan on making more of these videos. By the way, I had the gain up a little too high on the mixer, so there's some clipping here and there. Oh well.
