Paper Video Games of my childhood

video by Alexander Zolotov

Music made with Sunvox. Details below.

"In 1994 i didn't have a game console. But some classmates already owned popular NES clones, and i was very impressed with the aesthetics of 8-bit games of the time. All those pixels, colorful sprites, chip music!
I didn't really want to play them, but i definitely wanted to be somehow involved, maybe create my own games.
So i started cutting out small pieces of cardboard and painting game levels on them. It was like a paper ROM cartridge. The game console is also a cardboard box with a transparent window and a dot or triangle (the main character) in the center.
Some of these games were even playable :)
Most, of course, were more concepts than finished games.
The process of creating such games from scratch - that was the most important and interesting in this case!
A competing company was represented by my friend Kirill :) Together we created a huge amount of cartridges, then exchanged it, discussed it, came up with something new. For a couple of years, we have improved the technology and started creating games in the form of an interactive film on a sheet of paper.
In 1995 i got a PC (486SX) at home. But even after that, up to a certain point, we spent more time with paper games than with real computers :)

Sampler in SunVox: how to keep the length on different notes

video by Alexander Zolotov

0:00 Just a Sampler - the playback speed depends on the note.
1:00 Changing the pitch without changing the length (playback speed) of the sample.
2:26 The same, but the sample is played at half the speed.

SunVox Tracker Basics

Published on Mar 18, 2020 boxoftextures

"SunVox has been around for a long time on practically every platform. Heck, they even have a Palm Pilot version if that's what you need. I did this video on my iPad Pro but I could have just as easily done it with the Mac version, say, as they're basically identical.

This is a First Contact™ video. The app's not at all new but this is the first time I've really delved into it. In other words, please forgive me if I missed something truly obvious. Definitely looking forward to digging in deeper.

I really only touched the tracker parts of the app, and only one pattern, but there's a lot more to it than that. There are several synthesizer modules, and you can also make complex arrangements on the fly by making multiple patterns. You can add bits of randomness and uncertainty as well in order to make things perhaps more organic or maybe even self-playing possibly, although to be honest I've only barely scratched the surface and not gotten anywhere near those things yet.

I made this video mostly as a very basic demo for folks who've never seen a tracker before, or were wondering how one might be different from a sequencer. The simple answer is that a tracker is perhaps "lighter" than a sequencer in that you can do everything in it just by typing things in on your keyboard. You could just as easily do what I did on an iPhone while waiting for a bus rather than at home on an iPad or a computer, and that's kind of the point. Heck, you could probably do it just as easily on a Game Boy maybe. Not going to give up my laptop or my regular software, but I can actually do music on the fly on my phone at a moment's notice, and that definitely has value.

X1L3 - MONOLITH bluetooth receiver

X1L3 - MONOLITH - sunvox and some envelope follower routing

Published on Nov 17, 2019 X1L3

"Monolith - bluetooth receiver with envelope follower. What it is and where to get it below.

A quick demo here as i haven't got the time for the full twenty minute power electronix session. But i'm sure that'll turn up some time soon :)

Monolith is a simple and quiet bluetooth audio receiver. It allows you to stream audio from your phone or other bluetooth capable device into your eurorack rig. It boost the incoming audio to modular levels and has a bipolar envelope follower tied to the audio out. The follower has attack and release controls to shape the response. It works best with gated signals and things like drum tracks. But will generate interesting results with any signal that has a signifigant degree of amplitude variation in it.

Great for streaming found sound, youtube vids, phone conversations and the recording of the super market you made one day that you realised sounds like a hellscape nightmare when you slow it down to 50% and feed it through a clouds module :)

Sunvox on the phone is running a drum track which is streamed to monolith via bluetooth. This is then fed into a filter. The envelope follower is routed to the filter cut off and also a vca which has the bassline oscillator running through it. This is also fed into the filter. Both drums and bassline are then sent to the output mixer. The pads and melody are seperate from the monolith chain. And i'm playing the pitch of the bassline oscillator at the end via a yarns midi to cv module tied to the keyboard.

6HP with a mono output. The sum of the stereo bluetooth audio in is mixed inside the module."

Analogue Pocket - New Open Source Nintendo Gameboy w/ Nanoloop

Uploaded on Oct 16, 2019 Analogue Pocket Nanoloop Demos

via Analogue Pocket

"Pocket has a digital audio workstation built in called Nanoloop. It’s a synthesizer and a sequencer. Designed for music creation and live performance. Shape, stretch and morph sounds. Capture music or play and sculpt live.

Head over to www.analogue.co for more details on Analogue Pocket and Nanoloop.

*Video and audio footage is not captured on an Analogue Pocket and is showcased for demo purposes only. The final version of Nanoloop for Analogue Pocket is in development and subject to change.*"

Pocket is shipping in 2020 for $199.

What's key here is the following:

"Pocket is designed for development. We added a second dedicated just for developers to develop & port their own cores."

Should be interesting to see if any new synth apps are made for it. Sunvox, Electroplankton, and Korg DS-10 come to mind.

Automation in SunVox: six ways

Published on Jul 29, 2019 Alexander Zolotov

"Six different ways to automate controllers in #SunVox. In this video we automate the controller 08. Duty cycle of the Analog Generator.

1. (0:36) Controller properties. You can also get the same result by clicking on the controller with SHIFT.
2. (2:00) Manual input of values in a pattern.
3. (3:00) XXYY levels drawing.
4. (4:37) Interpolation - smooth transition between two values.
5. (6:13) Real time recording.
6. (7:16) LFO + Sound2Ctl.

For methods 1-4: rough pattern steps can be smoothed using the MultiCtl with Response less than 1000. (see 8:46)
