Tom Oberheim Interviewed by Sweetwater Sound

Published on Jun 29, 2015 SweetwaterSound

"Mitch Gallagher sits down with synthesizer legend Tom Oberheim for a special interview at Sweetwater's GearFest 2015. A pioneer of the synth and MIDI world, Tom Oberheim co-designed the Synthesizer Expansion Module (SEM), a device that allowed musicians to simultaneously combine live playing and sequenced playback - a concept that pre-dated the MIDI revolution. In 1981, he, along with Roland's Ikutaro Kakehashi and Sequential's Dave Smith, developed the MIDI spec, which changed the course of modern music. Tom recently re-released his famed Two Voice synth."

Dave Smith Interviewed by Sweetwater

Published on Jun 22, 2015 SweetwaterSound

"Mitch Gallagher sits down with synth pioneer Dave Smith here at Sweetwater Sound. Dave was visiting Sweetwater for GearFest '15, featuring a special panel discussion between Dave Smith, Roger Linn, and Tom Oberheim.

Legendary synth designer and Grammy-winner Dave Smith was the founder of Sequential Circuits in the mid-'70s. His Prophet-5, the world's first fully programmable polyphonic synth, was the first musical instrument with an embedded microprocessor. Dave is also known as the driving force behind the development of the MIDI specification. He has continued to innovate, and recently unveiled his latest synth creation, the Sequential Prophet-6."

The first soft synth ever, Seer Systems Reality, gets a mention.

Roger Linn Interviewed by Sweetwater

Published on Jul 10, 2015 SweetwaterSound

"At GearFest '15, synthesizer pioneer Roger Linn sat down with Mitch Gallagher to talk music and electronic instruments. Technical Grammy award-winner Roger Linn invented the LM-1 Drum Computer (the first sample-based drum machine) in 1979. He later designed the Akai MPC60, which combined a sampling drum machine with a real-time MIDI sequencer. His guitar effects unit, AdrenaLinn, has been used on hit recordings by John Mayer and Red Hot Chili Peppers. In 2014 he released the LinnStrument, an expressive MIDI performance controller.

Pittsburgh Modular System 10.1 Semi-modular Analog Synthesizer Demo - Sweetwater Sound?!

Published on Dec 4, 2014 SweetwaterSound

"Richard Nicol from Pittsburgh Modular presents the System 10.1 semi-modular analog synthesizer."

Great demo from Richard Nicol aside, I almost titled this post "Eurorack Goes Mainstream with Sweetwater" or "Eurorack Comes to Sweetwater". That's the news actually. Eurorack is now available at one of the largest mainstream music shops. I did a quick search on Sweetwater for "modular synth" and currently only Pittsburgh is listed. I thought they might only have their all-in-one mini systems, but there are some individual modules as well. Note Sweetwater is not a sponsor of MATRIXSYNTH, so no link for them! ;) I joined their affiliate program at one point but nothing ever came of it, so I felt I was giving them free advertising at the expense of my actual sponsors you see on the right of the site. That and I prefer to support those that put up the initial effort and risk to support the boutique synthesizer market to begin with.

All that said, this is an interesting bit of synth history when you think about it. Modular has been going mainstream for a while now (which is great! The more support manufactures get, the more we likely get to play with), but this is definitely one of those interesting moments. Is it a tipping point in either direction or will things remain as is? Eurorack at Sweetwater... They beat Guitar Center and Musicians Friend and Pittsburgh was first.

Alesis iO Dock Requires Separate Adapter for iPad 2?

via Ryan:
"I've pre-ordered the Alesis Studio Dock for my ipad 2, so it's encouraging to see some retailers now shipping. One is Sweetwater.

Now, alarming to me, is the 1st review at that retail site from someone who claims to have received one of these already...and finds it is not compatible with ipad 2 out of the box:

'The box is huge, and the dock is well packed. Includes power supply, a really skimpy manual...basically a quickstart guide that briefly explains the buttons, knobs, ins and outs, and so on, the I/O dock itself, and sadly enough, for you iPad 2 owners, a slip of paper telling you how to contact Alesis to order an adapter. Luckily for me, I have the iPad 1!'

WTF. Nowhere on the Alesis site does it say there is an adaptor required...or even available!

Consider my pre-order cancelled until I know more about this adaptor and its availability."

Quick note: remember to support the shops that support this site. See the DEALERS section on the right. Sweetwater gets a free ride on this one.

"Alesis I/O dock arrived on my doorstep today! Sweetwater shipped yesterday. Thanks Matt, you guys rock!

I wish they had 37 key version. I'm looking for the perfect tablet keyboard controller for lounging on the couch. Currently I'm using my KORG Microkorg. I like the look of the keys on the CME and the poly aftertouch, but two octaves isn't enough range for me.
