Synth Subway Ambient: Metro station repairs

Published on Dec 31, 2019 Synth & Sundry

"I had this short atmospheric synth track in a dusty corner of my hard drive. I came across a metro station under repairs that lent it a very interesting look with its vertical neon lighting illuminating the bare roof concrete. The music and the unconventional underground ambience go well together in this short video that transitions to the actual sounds of underground passageways, escalators and platforms.

Have you come across any interesting public transport structures in your travels or day to day?"

Prophet Rev2 Sound Demo | Channel 11 Night Raiders 🎧🎛

Published on May 17, 2020 Synth & Sundry

"100% Prophet Rev2 sounds in this atmospheric synth-laden overflight of downtown Chicago. All the Sequential presets used were heavily modified for maximum analog polyphonic synthesizer goodness. Some of the synth sounds were sequenced on Ableton Live and others were played in live as the track was recorded. How warm do you find the production?

The entire track was produced with the 16-voice version of the Sequential Prophet Rev 2. It was recorded and mixed in Ableton Live using an RME UCX interface.

Music and Video was composed, produced and edited by Alpicat for Synth & Sundry. All music and footage is original.

The footage was recorded during a night time overflight of Chicago using the Laminar Research X-Plane 11 flight simulator. The footage was then edited and finalised in DaVinci Resolve.

Prophet Rev2 First Look #2 | Filter - What is it like?

Published on Mar 27, 2019 Synth & Sundry

"The Dave Smith Instruments Prophet Rev 2, a refreshed modern analog polysynth, has a primary low pass Curtis filter which can be switched between 2 and 4 pole slopes.

Let's see how the filter feels. We try the filter with different settings both for cutoff and resonance. The filter affects the sounds coming from the oscillators and removes frequencies which changes the timbre of the sound.

The 2 pole mode has a 12db/octave slope while the 4 pole mode has the steeper 24db/octave mode that has a more pronounced effect (generally suitable for monophonic synth patches).

The main controls are the Cutoff that frequency at which frequencies start to be removed. This starts with the high frequencies and lends the name low-pass to the main filter for the Prophet Rev2. Cut off works hand in hand with resonance which highlights a narrow area of frequencies at the cut off point (where frequencies are being removed). This brings its own sonic characteristics.

It's worth noting that high resonance values lead to self oscillation when in four pole mode. This means that the filter will generate its own pitch.

Recorded through an RME Fireface UC audio interface without any effects or dynamics processing added."

Microbrute, Repro 5, PG8X & Legend Synth Music

Published on May 9, 2020 Synth & Sundry

"Three atmospheric and melancholic synthesizer tracks capturing sidelined scenes on the banks of the Thames. Enjoy the warm analog synth textures wash over the foliage and utilitarian architecture of the river.

Contents:
00:00 Arturia Microbrute and U-He Repro 5 VST (Prophet 5 emulator)
02:34 Arturia Microbrute
3:50 Legend VST by Synapse Audio and PG8X VST (Minimoog and Roland JX8P emulators respectively)

The Arturia Microbrute is monophonic analog synthesizer with a compelling analogue tone and focussed set of controls to dial in your sounds. There is no patch memory, so every sound needs to be programmed by hand for each track.

The U-He Repro 5 is a recreation of the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5. The first popular and (relatively) affordable polyphonic analog synth. The convincing recreation of the classic synthesizer is paired with a collection of effects to round out its sonic goodness.

You can hear the Legend VST in action in this dedicated video [posted here] This is a VST homage to the Moog Minimoog monosynth.

The PG8X is a free VST recreation which we have covered before [2nd video here] It has a convincing classic polysynth sound that is faithful to the Roland JX8P and a pleasing interface panel with all the design queues from the venerated synthesizer.

Video shot handheld on a Sony HX99. Edited on DaVinci Resolve
