Ratcheting the Easel Sequencer

Published on Nov 11, 2019 UncertainMusicCorps

"A short explanation of how to ratchet the Easel sequencer with the help of the 208 Toolbox. (It *should* also work with the VSTi version using the Left Hand modulation source to replace the Envelope generator if you add an appropriate cycle delay value but as I don't have the VSTi that's just a guess).

Using the pulser to trigger an envelope that is looping at a different rate to that of the pulser gives an envelope with a kind of phase shifted trigger as the frequencies of the pulser and the looping envelope beat against each other. I then use that to control the gate of the complex oscillator.

I can then riff over the sequence using the modulation oscillator by controlling its gate with the pressure out from the 218.

It's kind of possible to do something similar on an unexpanded Easel using the 218 preset pads to double the pulser rate but its hard to set up, doesn't sync properly and is limited in scope to the point of not really being worth the effort. There's a bad proof of concept video here if you have 40 seconds to waste.":

Bloody typical

"It is a contractual obligation that any new Easel owner must post a Krell patch. This is my take on Todd Barton's original concept. BC-9 came along for the ride too.

Worth going to the bother of using decent headphones/monitors to get the spectral range the Easel can deliver. Direct out. No FX, just the built in spring.

Normal service will be resumed as soon as possible........"

"Modular analogue soundscape. Recorded live and unedited.

Showcasing the talents of the rather excellent Makenoise Echophon. Other voices derived from Cwejman Res-4, Livewire AFG and Doepfer A 137 waveshaper. The scope visuals are from the O'Tool oscilloscope module. Ribbon controller is by Eowave

Headphones or good speakers recommended."

"Exploring ways to create slow evolving melodic patterns. Using a comparator to thin out rhythmic clocks into something more hesitant. to drive a Turing Machine style shift register. Also exploiting the newly arrived Stages to get more interesting envelope shapes. Main melodic voices are from Shapeshifter and Plonk. Drone from DC and Warps in tape delay mode (Parasites firmware)

This one really does need headphones."

Wingie nocturne

video upload by UncertainMusicCorps

"First test of a newly arrived Meng Qi Wingie resonator.
Gave it a [Chimera] BC9 to chew on.
I can't say I know exactly what I'm doing - the Wingie is deliberately cryptic so to encourage happy accidents. But I'm accidentally happy all the same.

Beware, there is quite a large dynamic range to the audio on this video."

Wingie SIG jam

video upload by UncertainMusicCorps

"Little jam session with SIG and Wingie.

SIG triggers are pinging both channels on Wingie. Upper manual is set to Bar mode, lower is set to Poly. SIG clock out is syncing the background drone modulations coming from the 4ms Ensemble Oscillator. Lead voice from Plaits also triggered by SIG."

Tinysizer filter demo

YouTube Uploaded by UncertainMusicCorps on Jun 23, 2011

"A demo. Not a piece - a demo.

Tinysizer filter in bandpass mode being put through some paces showing how the filter responds to different input levels. Filter being blipped by noise via S/H clocked by Envelope 2 triggered from LFO1 and 2 combined.

Go fullscreen to see the knob settings more clearly.

Minor output clip at 38 seconds. Slight delay applied to the output because I like delays."

Tinytenori

YouTube Published on Aug 29, 2012 by UncertainMusicCorps

"A test run for the iConnect midi interface using Tenori-On and TouchOSC on the iPhone to control Tinysizer.

One layer of the Tenori-On controls a bass sequence using one of Tinysizer oscillators. TouchOSC provides a virtual joystick controlling Tinysizer's second oscillator. The joystick needs more work (rescaling) because its really too sensitive at present.

Drum sounds are a custom set I made from the DrumDokta module by Din Sync. No other sound sources involved.

Best on good headphones or speakers."

If you have an iPad, iPod Touch, or iPhone, you can get the full blown Tenori-On for iOS for just under 20 bucks:

"Exploring the expressive use of an Eowave ribbon controller.
Ribbon is set to 1v/oct on CV1 and Pressure on CV2.
Pressure is then multied to Maths chan 1 to shape the pressure voltage and control the lead VCA as well as modulating various other parameters on the A-137 and E350 to vary the timbre of both the lead and aspects of the drone background.

Live, one-pass, unedited. Uncompressed audio available on my SoundCloud page."

Heat haze

video by UncertainMusicCorps

"What else to do on a hot day?
Mostly this is all about the drones, with 4MS SWN and ENOsc tag teaming to create shifting, shimmering moods. Soft piano highlights come from DistingEX driven by Wotja 21 via midi (unseen as its on the other side of the room). Gentle manual curation on modular and mixer to follow wherever all this might lead."

Trans-Pennine Express

YouTube Uploaded by UncertainMusicCorps on Mar 25, 2012

"Studio version of a live set I devised for a perfornance at Modularis Leeds (3-3-12).

Track is entirely analogue modular, except for my trusty Radel digital tabla which provides beats and a clock. Din Sync DrumDokta sequenced by Modcan Touch sequencer provide the other beats. Res-4 "choir" and E350 on drone duties. QMMG does dirty things to an audio feed from the Radel and PlagueBearer sings in the breakdown. Lead is played on an Eowave ribbon controller.

Video of the event borrowed from Headcleaner (magnoxopus on YouTube)

Uncompressed audio track is available for download on my SoundCloud page. (via the Tumblr link in my profile)"

"Self-contained generative system.

Disting 4(1) is in quantised ASR mode providing the shifting sequence. Disting 4(2) in dual random trigger mode providing clocks for 4(1) and the drumming.
Shuttle Control provides master clock with divisions.
Warps picks out a top line. Drone Commander does what it does. I try not to intervene."

Eowave Ribbon hybrid expressive control demo

Published on May 22, 2016 UncertainMusicCorps

"A little demo and exercise for myself to help decide if a Roli Seaboard controller would be a good investment.

In this video I'm using both the midi and CV outputs from my Eowave Ribbon (Mk I) to expand the range of expressive control on offer. All the modulations here are manual.

Ribbon midi provides note, gate, pitchbend and CC1 which is routed to Braids Timbre input. Ribbon pressure CV is used to control the timbre of the Dual Oscillator.

So that's almost comparable to the 5 dimensions of control the Roli offers. Which means, for monophonic use at least, I can get by on what I've got.

So that's more cash for modules."

Wingie automation

video upload by UncertainMusicCorps

"Digging deeper into the midi implementation of Wingie v2 led to this little proof of concept.

As in the previous video, Wotja is providing the audio for Wingie to feed on and is generating midi to control the pitches of its two voices.

This time, Wotja is also using midi CC0 to change at random the voice types used by Wingie's two channels. The changes are flagged by colour changes of the LEDs on the right side of Wingie's front panel.

I limited the change options to exclude 'cave' mode on this occasion."

Endless Processor - first run

video upload by UncertainMusicCorps

"A quick run-through for the Endless Processor from Blukač using the updated firmware.

The beta firmware allows you to chose between stacking or crossfading between sampled layers. Here I'm crossfading between layers sampled from the ENOsc on channel 2 and Strega on channel 1. Using CV from a fader from 16n to select the layers because its a little more comfortable than the pot on the module.

I think this crossfading option suits me better than the standard, stacked approach. I like how the layers interact when I scan through them. It also allows me to leave blank layers to add breathing spaces within a drone."

Quads

UncertainMusicCorps

"Short ambient test drive of the new dual wavetable algorithm for Disting EX.

Disting EX is set with dual wavetables on both sides, giving 4 voices in total. Right side provides a drone base, left side provides melodic lines determined by Marbles.

The Disting Mk4s contribute a low-fi delay and a rotary speaker effect. Both applied to the melodic voices.

The mix is done in the case (TomaTek 4x2 matrix mixer) and recorded as a stereo pair direct to camera."

Diss Ease [Flight of Harmony Track]

YouTube Uploaded by UncertainMusicCorps on Aug 21, 2011

"Easy listening for the Exterminating Angel.

An exercise in minimalism, inspired by a thread at Muff's forum to see what can be done using one primary module.
The module used here is the Plague Bearer from Flight of Harmony and is the only audio source of the entire piece. The other modules in use are a passive multiple and a VCA providing a FX send.

The rest of the voices are derived from the Eventide PitchFactor. Final FX from Eventide Space.

Less is sometimes more.

Said the Angel."
