Love the aesthetic of these. It's kind of interesting when you think about it. With boutique synths usually the single maker designs the look of a give synth. Who designs the look of a synth for something like this?  I kind of miss the new look of synths.  Vermona has it going with the upcoming Vermona '14.  What happened to that one anyway?  It's not even on their product page.

(Vermona '14) Telemann: Fantasia #4 in Bb (Section 1)

Published on Dec 16, 2018 Kris Lennox

"Section 1 from Telemann's Fantasia #4 in Bb (originally for solo flute).

The initial plan was to record each Fantasia as a single piece, but each section is strong enough to act as a standalone recording. That, plus each section suits a new synth tone.

Great pieces, great composer. I'll likely eventually record on the Vermona all of Telemann's solo Fantasias - they suit the instrument perfectly.

A great long-term project I have my eyes on is to record all solo flute works on mono synth. I've given this thought for a while, and will possibly record key works on certain synths. Recording all solo flute works would be a huge project - best to start with a few sets/pieces.

The solo flute repertoire is perhaps one of the best ways to make the most of a monosynth - no need for layering etc. And with Telemann, the purity of Baroque melodic lines really does shine through.

All best
Kris"

(Vermona '14): Pre-Burns Scots Song (Session 1)

Published on Nov 10, 2018 Kris Lennox

"Right. Being an Ayrshire lad, this recording could lead to my waking up dead i.e. playing enemy music (Galloway etc). One has to be careful.

Growing up in Ayrshire = saturated with Burns. I'll get round to recording some Burns, but there's plenty of other Scots repertoire aside from the womaniser's music.

I'm assuming most people reading this won't be Ayrshire: in Ayrshire schools, from the very earliest days there are yearly Burns competitions, where his poems have to be read aloud. For the first 10 years or so it is quite the novelty, but the resentment soon sets in.

Since I'm in a good mood tonight, I'll go so far as to say even foreigners can listen to this recording if they wish (i.e. people from Edinburgh).

Hell, I'm in such a good mood I'll even allow women to listen to it.

On a serious note - all recordings, in fitting with how they would have sounded in their day, are detuned lower than A440. Of course, electricity/limited-run German synths were an issue back then, but one can't be too picky when it comes to matters of history.

I'm hoping this recording/other Scots Song work I do acts as a useful 'internet repository' of Scots Song. Playing the melodies unaccompanied is very useful for instrumentalists/vocalists etc. As such, I'm keeping relatively faithful to the original manuscripts.

Note that on a couple of tracks VCO 1 is pitch-locked i.e. reminiscent of a bagpipe drone.

The Vermona sounds great. The instrument is so direct that creating a new patch for each track doesn't take too long at all. On a synth with lots of menus etc, it is easy to spend forever honing a sound only to realise an entire evening has passed.

It is a great no-nonsense 'get to the point' synth. And, as can probably be heard from the works in this video, very wide tonal/timbral range.

Brilliantly useful in the studio as a product of its quickness to dial in a sound.

Best
Kris"

"Flagship synth of Vermona.. incredible range of tones and very limited (only 222 made). It's in really nice condition, only a scratch on the back panel near the screw (see some of the last photos). Still works and sounds great!"

Matrixbrute x2, DFAM, Model D, Vermona '14, Arp Odyssey: "Six by Eighteen"

Published on Oct 4, 2019 Kris Lennox

"Utter synth indulgence :) I imagine this is the first time these synths have been heard together. The included is a six-mono version of the track I uploaded last week. Following the voices as per the video should be easy enough, but ordered highest-lowest, they are:

Model D (I've moved this part down an octave from the score; in this arrangement this octave works better)
DFAM
MB
V '14
Arp Oddy
MB.

Here's an HQ Soundcloud link:

PS if anyone wants the MIDI files for this, I'm happy to sell them: £25 for all six individual files, plus a composite file (velocities have been edited in the composite file; in the individual files, all velocities are a straight 127). Just send me a message via paypal (krislennoxpiano@gmail.com) and i'll ping off an invoice.

Anyone looking for the score, £20 seems fair. Again, just message me via paypal.

Enjoy/all best
Kris

Vermona '14/Gregorian Chant (Hildegard von Bingen: "Caritas Habundat")

Published on Dec 31, 2019 Kris Lennox

"Hello all - and a happy new year/decade when it arrives. Appropriately, a little von Bingen to finish off the decade. If this work sounds familiar: the initial melody/phrase was used as the horn solo melody (first phrase) on the track 'Life' from the movie 'Prometheus'. The phrase ending is slightly altered in Prometheus, but the seed can clearly be heard. The second horn phrase is, however, authentic to von Bingen.

These melodies (Gregorian chants in general) have been part of my musical heritage since early childhood, and have been part of the family for many generations. Hence my plan to record and release an 'official' set in the near future.

In any instance, the coming decade will certainly be an interesting one.

"Purchased new a few months ago, it's brilliant but surprise root canals are expensive as it turns out.

#212 of 222, comes with original box, manual, cover, I think there's a microfiber wiping cloth in the sealed bag, unused foot pedal and IEC power cable."

(Vermona '14 (x3)): "MachineDreamsGarden"

Published on Oct 20, 2018 Kris Lennox

"Three Vermonas. Part 2 enters at c.0:30, part 3 at c.1:20.

I had also created a percussion part on Buchla, but the track works well without the percussion. Different feel."
