Volca FM + Ditto X4 = loop fun!

Published on Feb 22, 2018 Slenterende Beer

"I decided to switch from the Ditto Stereo looper to the Ditto X4! I had the idea of doing an all-FM song, so this is what I did:

I programmed 4 short sequences on the Volca, heard in the following order at the start of the video: kick, hi-hat, snare and simple repeating melody. I then recorded a 1-bar loop of silence on the Ditto, to match the length of the FM sequences. After the length was set, I started recording loop 1 and played the 4 sequences, each time layering the loop (aka overdubbing).

I also recorded a 4-bar loop of silence (again, just to set the length), that I then started using for the bass line and chords. After those were recorded on loop 2, it was time for a little solo and playing with the looper effects.

The reason this is possible at all, is because the Ditto and the Volca are synced through MIDI, which was not possible with the Ditto Stereo. The Retrokits RK-004 sends the MIDI clock out to both devices.

Almost all Volca FM patches are from the "Percussive" and "FM Does Analogue" patch packs by the great Oscillator Sink.

Volca FM Keystep PO-12 Cuckoo Jam

Published on Aug 12, 2016 cuckoomusic

"Hello everyone! (ps: chapters below, in description)
Here's an unedited real-time recording of 6 jams using the Korg Volca FM, the Arturia Keystep MIDI keyboard, the Teenage Engineering PO-12 drum machine, and some minor, but important use of the iOS app Midiflow to route and filter MIDI between the device. In this case I also to used Midiflow to convert the Mod wheel to the VolcaFM's Velocity (cc41).

I decided to keep it unedited to show curious watchers the complete workflow, and also to highlight how fun the Keystep is! I love the sequencer, the arpeggio, the easy-to-access note gate and and swing. This is all made with musicians in mind. It's great to make a basic sequencer on the Volca. And then use the Keystep to play with its own sequencer on top of the Volca. And in the end freestyle while both of the sequencers are running. Great fun!

The Volca FM sound is wonderful. It really is wonderful. I think some FM synthesis at times tend to sound artificial and hard on your brain. But KORG has done a wonderful job, creating a warm and lovely FM engine. You can still go crazy with FM overtones, but it just sounds "right".

Ok ladies and gents, and everyone else.
Enjoy! ;-)

SonicLAB: Korg Volca FM

Published on Apr 22, 2016 sonicstate

"The Volca FM is the latest addition to the Korg Volca family, this little guy gives you 3 voices of classic 6 operator FM sounds - with patch compatibility for the DX-7"

Update: at 15:14 Nick notes that the Volca FM does not respond to realtime editing via Dexed, a DX7 software emulator that transmits realtime parameter edits. I'm guessing this is not just a problem with Dexed but all external editors including those for the iPad. If this is indeed the case, this is unfortunate. I was looking forward to using the iPad to edit the Volca FM. Another question is whether you can chain two units for a six voice synth.  That would equate to a six voice DX7 for roughly $300 in a compact size with sequencer.  It is my understanding that you cannot chain them yet.  If anyone knows otherwise, please chime in.

2016 first try " KORG volca fm" by konxxxq

Published on May 30, 2016 konxxxq

Volca FM DEMO + Novation Circuit + OP-1

Published on Jun 21, 2016 Alba Ecstasy

"After 4 month of waiting since I pre-ordered it, my Volca FM arrived today! Didn't expect this. And didn't expect at all to sounds so good, so powerfull, so clear! Definetely it's an amazing little box! And with the new update, which makes the Motion Sequence to be actually Smooth and to solve some bugs (that already jumped into my ears), Volca FM deserves its place on FM synthesis history.
Cons? Sure: polyphony, knobs too small and too close one of each other - when changing the program I always touch the Algoritm knob, no external control on velocity.

Hello! It's been a while since I used the Korg Volca FM and figured it was about time to make use of those wonderful FM sounds again. This time it's a synth cover of Mother 3 (known as Earthbound outside of Japan).

I really love the sounds the Volca FM is capable of creating. The plucked arpeggio is super clean sounding with a certain hollow-ness to it, and the lead and bass sounds are equally as tasteful. There isn't really a bass line for the original track so I added one to add a bit of depth to the overall mix.

This song might be a more obscure one but it sure does sound good being played on the Volca FM. I hope you enjoy it!"

Volca FM Day 1 - With Korg Minilogue, Roland TR8 and RE-301

Published on Apr 2, 2016 Earmonkey Music

"Got the Korg Volca FM yesterday. It is extremely musical and easy to approach, even if you don't completely understand what's happening under the hood. I can't say I can make it do what I want, but I can make it do all kinds of things and that may be even better. Sometimes inspiration and order comes from chaos. In this video here's what's going on:

I'm controlling the Volca from the Mopho SE keyboard. The Volca is clock-synced from the Minilogue via the Minilogue's Volca sync output. The TR8 is synced also from the Minilogue via MIDI. Those Korg blokes are so damn smart.... The Volca and Minilogue are both running into the Roland RE-301, and get some chorus from Valhalla Ubermod.

I am only manipulating four different parameter settings on the Volca to get this huge variety is sound. There are two sliders, one for Transpose, which (surprise) transposes the notes up or down octaves, and one for Velocity control. The Velocity gives velocity info to your incoming notes played and can significantly vary the sound. I have not found a way to get the FM to respond to velocity in from the keyboard so if anyone out there knows how to do that please make a comment and let me know.

The other two parameters I'm messing with in the video are the Modulator Attack and Release. As I understand FM, you have a sine wave (operator) that acts as a Carrier, then additional waves (Modulators) that act as, well, modulators. By manipulating the modulator waves, you get a huge variation in the timbre.

Honestly, I'm not really sure what's happening on the technical level, but I do know it sounds totally bitchin.

Finally, the FM has an arpeggiator which I engage at about 3:50. Add some Minilogue lead, and later a beat from the TR8, and this little box is one of the most musical, most inspiring pieces of kit I have bought in a long time. It's just fun. Hope you enjoy."

Yamaha DX7 – Test Drive Of FM Player, KQ Dixie, Dexed, NI FM8, Arturia DX7-V and Korg Volca FM

Published on Jan 16, 2018 Power DX7

"An epic, detailed and accurate test drive of those DX7 emulation apps, VSTs and hardware in 1 video is here!! You will see side-by-side comparison of 6 'DX7 Wanna Be's', compared against Yamaha DX7 MK1 from 1983.

Like understanding true capability and performance of super cars from Ferrari, Porsche and Honda by taking them to a race track and pushing them to their limit, you need to do the same to the DX7 and DX7 Wanna Be's to truely understand their capabilities.

For this epic test drive, I selected a few Power DX7 signature patches that are designed to push FM synthesis further and further. Thus, you will conclusively see how each DX7 Wanna Be is capable of emulating the original DX7 MK1 from over 30 years ago!!!!!

With more than 30 years gaps with some of the DX7 Wanna Be's, has the original DX7 MK1 finally met its match? Are those modern DX7 emulators far better than more than 30 years old DX7 MK1?

We test drive 6 DX7 apps, VSTs and hardware in total.

FM Player - This is a very unique iOS app as it is not a FM synth, but it's DX7 sample player.

KQ Dixie - This is an iOS app that is design to emulate the DX7 MK1 faithfully with additional features, like a filter and effect.

Dexed - This is a free DX7 emulation VST for your Mac and Windows. I have used a new version for this test drive.

Native Instrument FM8 - This is a powerful FM synth VST that can import DX7 patches. It is far more feature rich than Dexed and its a unique FM synth in on its own. For this test drive, my focus is for its DX7 patch compatibility.

Arturia DX7 - V: This is a new VST that claims to have faithfully emulated the DX7 MK1 with added features.

Korg Volca FM - A hardware FM synth that is DX7 compatible. It has built-in sequencer and an effect as well. So, over 30 years in technological advances, can it perfectly emulate the original DX7 MK1 with a wide range of DX7 patches?"

Volca FM, Machinedrum, Electribe Sampler, Tribal House Live jam

Published on Jun 14, 2016 Shimanski Beats

"Finally received the Volca FM, and after a while of playing around I came up with an edgy FM sequence that I combined with a tribal house beat on the Machinedrum made the other day, and then programmed the other elements on the Electribe Sampler. Everything DAWless, i.e. it's a live hardware performance recorded in one go. unfortuantely, the camera position is not the best, so sometimes my arms block the vision.

Instruments used:
Volca FM (edgy FM sequence; internal sequencer)
Elektron Machinedrum (beat; internal sequencer)
DSI Mopho (lead sequence)
Yamaha TX81z (FM slap bass + mallet lead sequence)
MAM MB33 Retro (analog bass)
Electribe Sampler (sequencer for the other gear)
External FX used: Lexicon MX200, TC Electronic M one XL, TC Electronic M350, DBX 166XL
(the Waldorf Blofeld in the picture is not in use in this track)"

Dark Souls - Firelink Shrine (Korg Minilogue, Volca FM)

video by SyllixMusic

"Hello! Here's my synth cover of Dark Souls - Firelink Shrine played on the Korg Minilogue and the Volca FM. I really love the dark, ambient nature of this song and felt it would be a perfect fit for me to cover. The minilogue handles the ambient pads while the Volca FM plays the role of the harp. I absolutely love the second half of this song and the Volca FM handles it beautifully - I am really happy with the tone and how it turned out.

The cover is very true to the original song, with some minor differences I added for my own personal preference. I hope you enjoy it!"

The blind masseur (Volca FM x2, Keys, Beats)

Published on May 10, 2016 Metatron's Cube

"It seems my video editing software can't handle a bunch of stuff happening at once, I tried re-rendering this several times and they all have a stutter near the beginning. But, it was too cool not to upload even if it's janky for a few seconds. Anyhoo, Zatoichi the blind masseur/swordsman whistles us in on this jam. His sword skills are so powerful the computer shudders in fear and mis-renders the action(lol). The Korg FM's are set up like a guitar, and the other like a plucked string like sound(and clashing blades in one part). It's a drone to wander the landscape to. Also a big thanks to all the recent subscribers. We have been working quite a bit lately, but when it calms down some more, bigger jams will happen. There are things slowly happening in the shadows(as well as a full Volca Series(all five volcas) random give-away at, or just after our 1000th subscriber, because why not?). Have great week everyone, and thank you for listening and watching!
