New Woody Piano Shack #Shorts

A few new short clips by supporting member, Woody Piano Shack.

Playlist:

1. Don't You Want Me, seriously!? #Shorts
Demo of an 80s synth pop style on the YAMAHA PSR SX900 arranger keyboard which is a blatant copy of Human League Don't You Want Me Baby! Never managed to figure out the chords to the bridge during the heat of the moment, but it just adds to the cringe.
2. Michael Jackson song on arranger keyboard #Shorts
Demo of a pop/country don't-know-what style on the YAMAHA PSR SX900 arranger keyboard using some random Jackson 5 song.
3. The Glorious 80s Ballad DX7 ELECTRIC PIANO #Shorts
Demo of the fabulous E.PIANO electric piano preset patch of the 1983 YAMAHA DX7 digital synthesizer, as heard on literally hundreds of hits of the 1980s. Performed on a modern YAMAHA MODX synth using the intro of "Somewhere Out There" by Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram.
4. You dig this Euro-disco synth beat? #Shorts
This drum pattern and arpeggio reminded me of Voyage Voyage by Desireless, or Captain of her heart so I played and enjoyed some kind of mashup chord progression. I love this preset sound!

Vintage TRITON Really Sound Better Than Modern KORG KROSS?

Woody Piano Shack

"Some viewers claim that the little entry-level KORG KROSS 2 synthesizer doesn't sound as good as the legendary top-of-the-range KORG TRITON from 1999.
That seemed like a good topic for a video so I loaded the KROSS with some TRITON presets and went to town.
Let's compare the pianos, pads, bass, drums of each synth to see if we can settle this, once and for all."

Hardware vs Software Synth Showdown with Woody & Espen Craft

Published on Apr 4, 2018 Espen Kraft

"Woody from the excellent channel "Woody Piano Shack" has thrown down the gauntlet! He's challenged me to make an original piece of music using my old hardware synths from the 80s which he will then try to recreate using software and emulations. In the box.

As I gladly accept these kinds of challenges, I've cooked up a track I think he'll enjoy recreating.
You can too as I've included the live stems for the track here:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1OjT...

For my version I've used the following gear:

Yamaha RX11 - Drums
Roland D-550 - Pads
Roland Juno 2 - Synth Guitar
Roland JX-8P - Poly synth
Roland Juno 6 - Bass (sampled in S-10 for MIDI sequencing)
Yamaha DX7 - Fairlight Flutes and Italo Poly synth
Yamaha TX802 - PPG Digital Guitar Bells
Elka EK22 - Synth bells

I play live on top of the sequenced synths controlled by the Roland MC50 sequencer."

Update:

"Here's the result of the hardware versus software synthesizer showdown! in this video I'll share the track created using just free software VST plugins and Reaper DAW.

Published on Dec 12, 2017 Woody Piano Shack

"The Yamaha DX7 has returned! Let's take a first look at the Arturia DX7 V, a new virtual instrument in the newly released Arturia V Collection 6 suite of classic vintage software synthesizers and keyboards. I'll give you a quick tour of the GUI and play you an original performance.

We will do more videos on this interesting product so feel free to post questions or topics in the comments that I can address in future videos. How about a DX7V versus original DX7 comparison or another walkthrough of the Yamaha factory presets?

I was also excited to see Arturia release a Fairlight VST called CMI V so stay tuned for some demos of the iconic sample libraries from the 80s."

Outrun soundtrack on Yamaha DX7 DEXED VST

Published on Sep 30, 2017 Woody Piano Shack

"Outrun soundtrack Passing Breeze as you've never heard it before! Remixed using Dexed VST plugin emulating the sound of the legendary 1983 Yamaha DX7 FM synthesizer.

The original arcade hardware also used a primitive form of Yamaha FM synthesis so this version has similar sounds but in much higher fidelity.

So enjoy once again the sound of the Yamaha DX7 electric piano and bass patches, put through a touch of TAL Chorus (an emulation of the Roland Juno-6 analog chorus).

Sega Out Run (アウトラン Auto Ran) arcade music was provided by Hiroshi Kawaguchi, who had previously composed soundtracks for other games designed by Suzuki, and who was part of Sega's official band at the time, the S.S.T. Band. Out Run was the first video arcade game that allowed the user to choose the background music. The soundtrack comprised both jazz music (similar in style to that of fusion band Casiopea) and Latin/Caribbean music (similar to Miami Sound Machine). In all, three selectable tracks were featured: Passing Breeze, Splash Wave and Magical Sound Shower. An additional track, Last Wave, played at the final score screen.

Here is some information about the sound chips used in the original arcade hardware, as you can see FM synthesis is used here too.

Sound CPU: Zilog Z80 @ 4 MHz (8/16‑bit instructions, 0.58 MIPS)
Sound chips: 2 chips, 24 channels, 24‑bit bus width
- FM synthesis chip: Yamaha YM2151 @ 4 MHz (8 FM channels, 8‑bit bus width)
- PCM sampling chip: SegaPCM 315‑5218 Sound Controller @ 4/16 MHz (stereo)"

Roland Introduces the D-05 - Boutique Version of the Roland D-50

Published on Sep 9, 2017 RolandChannel

It may not have all the sliders of the concept module posted here, but it does have the engine. An interesting side note is that this is Roland's first synth to feature their "newly developed Digital Circuit Behavior (DCB)". The second video explains what this is. It is interesting. I always assumed digital was digital and easily ported. I do know that DACs (digital to analog converters) can have an impact on the sound you hear from a synth, and one of the reasons why many prefer the sound of the original DX7 vs. newer hardware. Nord/Clavia also advertised their new DACs on the Nord Lead 2 allowing for a cleaner sound if I remember correctly. All that said, it is interesting to think that Roland took time to work on their DCB technology to get a sound closer to the original, vs. just porting the digital engine. I'm looking forward to A/B tests with the original.

Roland D-05 Boutique Linear Synthesizer Sound Module - Overview and Demo

Published on Sep 9, 2017 Musician's Friend

And the press release:

"New Roland Boutique module recreation of the renowned D-50 Linear Synthesizer from the 1980s

Los Angeles, CA, September 9, 2017 — Roland announces the D-05 Linear Synthesizer, the latest addition to the growing Roland Boutique electronic instrument lineup. The D-05 is a compact reproduction of Roland’s D-50 Linear Synthesizer from the late 1980s, one of the most influential synthesizers ever produced. Combining the newly developed Digital Circuit Behavior (DCB) sound generator with the actual samples used in the original instrument, the D-05 delivers the D-50’s iconic, highly recognizable sounds with complete authenticity, backed by all the modern conveniences of the compact and affordable Roland Boutique module format.

Released in 1987, the D-50 was Roland’s very first all-digital synthesizer. Powered by the revolutionary Linear Arithmetic (LA) Synthesis engine, the instrument’s unique mix of sampled attacks and synthesized sustaining waveforms – plus built-in chorus, reverb/delay, and EQ for studio-quality polish – made it a must-have synth for musicians around the world. The D-50’s bold new sounds and beautifully crafted presets inspired artists everywhere and quite literally dominated the popular music, film soundtracks, and commercial jingles of the era. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of this giant in the history of synthesis, Roland presents an inspiring recreation that brings the genuine D-50 experience to the music creators of today and beyond.

At the D-05’s core lies the first synthesizer with Roland’s DCB technology. Paired with the exact PCM attack and loop samples that were so vital to the D-50 sound, the D-05 precisely recreates every tonal nuance in stunning detail. The user interface is totally authentic as well, with the familiar D-50 panel layout and many direct-access controls. Even the all-important D-50 joystick is included, allowing users to smoothly morph between different mixes of Upper and Lower Tones in real time.

The D-05 also includes many modern enhancements not available with the original D-50. The 64-step polyphonic sequencer is ideal for performance and music creation and offers the ability to sequence shuffle and gate timing along with tempo and patch changes. There’s also a built-in arpeggiator for adding movement to the D-05’s already evocative LA Synthesis sounds.

Like all Roland Boutique modules, the D-05 is extremely portable, runs on USB bus power or batteries, and functions as a USB audio/MIDI interface for performing and producing with a computer. It also includes a built-in speaker for monitoring the sound in mobile situations. When mounted in the optional K-25m Keyboard Unit, the D-05 can be used as a compact, all-in-one synth with 25 velocity-sensitive keys."
