Someone Told Me That Chicks Dig Modular Synths, So I Bought A Really Big One!

YouTube via JohnLRice — June 01, 2010 — "After many weeks of battling 'home' projects I finally was going to let myself have some fun today with my modular synth . . . unfortunately it was windy and the power kept going off! ARRG!!! Needless to say, I didn't get much done so this is just another quickie demo for fun.

The M569 is in 2x16 mode so half of it is controling the pitch of the single MOTM-300 VCO via the Modcan 55B quantizer. The other half of the M569 is controlling the scale of the 55B.

Thanks for watching and commenting. One of these days I'll get everything together and start composing some 'real' music . . . ."

Simple Sequence Featuring Strymon El Capistan

YouTube via JohnLRice | August 23, 2010

"I was just testing out my new Strymon echo pedal with my modular synth and I liked this sequence so I thought I would share. The El Capistan is patched into the effects loop of a Roland M-120 mixer.

Thanks for watching!"

Happy Nerding Super Sawtor - First Impressions

YouTube ublished on May 17, 2012 by JohnLRice

"This is just some footage of me messing around with the new Super Sawtor module from Happy Nerding. I'll do another video later that describes what is going on in detail.

The Super Sawtor takes a sawtooth wave from a VCO as an input and "animates" it so that it sounds anywhere from slightly modulated to something like many VCOs at once.

With this video I'm often switching back and forth between the straight unprocessed sawtooth wave and the processed Sawtor output set at various degrees of "spread". The video starts out mono and then later I has the second channel. At one point I modulate the top channel with a LFO and also add some delay/echo during the last couple sections."

Wut? Now The 554 Works Fine!

Published on Aug 28, 2013 JohnLRice·215 videos

"This will be uninteresting to most people.

It was done very quickly with a lower resolution camera than normal and just the camera mic (Nikon D300s) because I wanted documented proof that the Moon Modular 554 Octal Clock Divider CAN work correctly with minimal workarounds and considerations.

Grove Audio PM Resonator Pink Noise Test

YouTube via JohnLRice | August 03, 2010

"Just a demo video for the modular synth gearheads out there. Sorry for no annotations but you can probably tell that I'm just trying to show the range of effect the module has using as many settings as possible. I start slow and then speed up at the end because I realize my camera is going to shut off before I'm done! ;-)

Dub Birds [New Synth Tech E440 Teaser Video]

YouTube Published on Jul 18, 2012 by JohnLRice

"This is a second "teaser" video of the new Synth Tech E440 voltage controlled low pass filter. I was experimenting with mixing the E440's three different outputs and trying different modulation sources on it and ended up using them all at once. Here's the basics of the patch:
Modcan Touch-Sequencer to 8NU8R to 1vOct input
E355 LFO 1 to FM1
E355 LFO 2 to FM2
Modcan Touch-Sequencer to E355 1v/Oct
Dixie Sine to E355 FM
Noisering to 8NU8R to VC RES
Modcan Touch-Sequencer to E350 to Audio In
4P to Unify channel 1 panned center
3P to Unify channel 2 panned left
2P to Unify channel 3 panned right

As always, thanks for watching! Hang in there, an actual demo for the E440 is coming soon . . ."

Club of The Knobs C906a Low Pass Gate Now Shipping

"The module C 906A contains a voltage controlled low pass filter unit with a slope of -30dB/oct and two voltage controlled amplifiers in a chain.
The filter unit has a controller for the resonance (regeneration) which can be tuned until self oscillation.
With the switch "Return On" it is possible to lead parts of the output signal back to the filter which allows very deep bass - even until distortion.
With the switch named "VCF F/A" it is possible to link either only the VCF signal or the filer and amplifier signal to the output jack.
The filter has two control inputs. If the filter is tuned to self-oscillation, the input "V/Oct." enables to play the filter as a tuned sinus oscillator.
The left control input is internally connected with the left control input of the VCA. When plugging in a patch cord, this connection is cancelled and the VCA awaits an external control signal.
The "+2nd" input is always open. When plugging in a patch cord, then it can only be opened by an external control signal.
The "Main Out" pot controls the volume of the output sum."

The Parade That's Electrical Takes A Lot Of Juice Just To Impress Us

YouTube via JohnLRice
"Another 'quick one' for fun. Even though I thought of putting some solos, drums, percussion and other supporting tracks to this sequence, I thought it was nice as is. This reminds me a little of my peice The Last King (both my version that is here on my You Tube channel and the collaberation version I did with Martin Peters found on the Synthesizers.com Collective 2009 CD)

Thanks to No Doubt for the title! ;-)

Thanks for watching, rating and commenting!"

We Don't Need No Syncing Bad Jams!

"I was experimenting with the Synth Tech MOTM-650 MIDI-CV converter's arrpegiator sending MIDI clock out to the Moon M553 MIDI2CV converter and syncing up the M569 sequencer etc. It turned into something I wanted to preserve by recording it but, I have another project I really want to get done so I did this one pretty quick. (I was planning on several tracks of Eastern hand drums and full drumset too . . .)

This is the third attempt which was followed by three false starts and then the final take which was the best. Unfortunately I didn't realize that the camera had run out of memory so I only got the first minute of it. :-/ So what you see here is the third attempt with extra bonus mistakes for your viewing amusment! ;-)

Thank you for watching, rating and commenting!"

Something Nice For Your Cat (part 2 re-edit 2010)

"More of the same from part 1 with the lights off! While I think part 1 is 'better' there is a thing or two about part 2 I really like. I had originally uploaded a longer version of part 2 last year but pulled it down quickly because of some really stinky playing. This re-edit gets rid of some, but not all, of the bad parts. Featured are the wonderful sounds of MOTM-300 sine waves passed through MOTM-440 and MOTM-485 filters etc. For more information on MOTM synthesizers go to www.synthtech.com/

Thanks for listening, rating and commenting!"

BOING (No Boom Chuck)

YouTube via JohnLRice | February 08, 2011 |

"This started out as a simple demo of the Modcan 24B Boolean module and ended up being a huge complex patch that merely produces random bleeps and bloops. You decide which is right, and which is an illusion. (cue soaring strings ;-)

Thanks for watching!"

M569, Control Yourself! Part3

YouTube Uploaded by JohnLRice on Mar 3, 2012

"This wasn't originally intended to be part of the same series but, it ties in with the discussion here: http://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=53628

We were discussing the differences between the modern Moon Modular 569 step sequencer and the traditional and classic Moog 960 step sequencer (clones are currently available from Synthesizers.com and Club Of The Knobs)

The 960 has a switch per column that allows for the selection of one of several behaviors: skip (jumps to the next step), normal (sends CV and Gate signals for that step), stop (stops the sequencer from running when the step is reached) and reset (jumps to the first step). The 569 on the other hand has a switch for every step of every row that selects one of two 'normal' modes or Function, and then there is a Function switch per row that selects skip, reset or stop.

It's a common assumption that both skips and resets can't be used on the same row but, it CAN be done if you just assign skips on rows 1 - 3 and then use the selectable gate outs of row 4 to reset all rows.

Thanks for watching!"
