sequences & tones. - microfreak & supercollider

video by junklight

"working on supercollider things for one of the album projects I have underway. Made the rising and falling drone thing while experimenting with FM and the rest of the piece fell out & has been nagging at me - so needed to get a little performance with it recorded. Not even vaguely like the rest of the album tracks so this is probably its only outing

Absolutely love the new noise engineerings algorithms on the microfreak"

soundscape & improvisation with XTk & MLR

video by junklight

"wasn't really in the mood for patching & programming so just sat down with some trusty tools & made some noises. Really must get around to making some more XTk patches than this small handful I currently have on the go....."

Finger style with Just friends

video by junklight

"Been experimenting with finger style patterns on the modular using crow driving just friends for another project but somewhere along the line the script turned into this little piece

The patterns did sound more like finger style playing on a guitar earlier today but like everything I pushed and messed about with them to see where they would go"

Soundscapes - Microfreak 3 and MLR

video by junklight

"It's been a weekend of experimentation and play on the music front. I upgraded the microfreak to get the superb new Noise Engineering algorithms. As you may have noticed if you watched earlier videos on this channel I really like the NE stuff and these additions to the Microfreak are no exception

For these soundscapes i started with an init patch although for the video I edited the initial 20-30 seconds of getting a starting sound out"

Sequencers & synths - eurorack, XTk , u-he hive

video by junklight

"If you are in your 50's and have a modular synth there is probably a law that says you have to make Tangerine Dream influence music from time to time.

probably"

slow beats - Waldorf XTk, Ableton

junklight

"Still finding my way back into my music practice - a bit more of a conventional setup today. Been thinking a lot about Chris Randall's comments about why he got rid of his modular (paraphrasing: when he had the modular it became about the modular not the music)

Ignore my strangely swollen left hand - got some weird oedema crap going on - hopefully not serious, talking to the doctor about it later this week

Unsettled music for unsettled times: modular (Cursus Iteritas), Piano & delay

junklight

"small steps as I return to action after a fallow period.

Vaguely thinking about the rhythmic patches Zoviet France started live sets with around the turn of the century. Lots of related modulation from ochd & wogglebug on the Cursus Iteritas. Additional voice from the trusty DPO.

Piano is going through Valhalla Delay which I'm controlling a couple of parameters on."

Techno Experiment: eurorack, digitakt, XTk

junklight

"I'm working on a new project which is techno based (and probably won't be released under the "junklight" moniker either) but it's been a while since my (possibly misspent) techno soaked 20's so finding a groove again.

The ending leaves a bit to be desired"

what if I wrote a teletype script to ping all my filters?

junklight

"This piece came directly from the question "what if I wrote a teletype script to ping all my filters?". As it turned out the pulse from the teletype itself didn't seem beefy enough so I made pulses with Maths and the Quadra for the actual pinging. Then last night I was listening to the wonderful Ekin Fil and one of her pieces kind of inspired the bassline. And then this is one of the improvisations I did around that eurorack setup."

Islands, microfreak , bit of eurorack

junklight

"Slowly finding my way back to music. Had a bit of an odd patch of late with very little music making or desire to make it but it seems to be returning a little."

Playing the Cursus Iteritas with MPE

junklight

"The Cursus Iteritas is my kind of oscillator and as soon as I heard a demo I knew I needed one. More often than not though it ends up making percussive sounds. For todays video though I hooked it up to the seaboard via the FH-1 and let it do its thing. The output is routed via the Viol Runia for some extra grit & flavour

Accompaniment is a Christian Henson piano sample and MLR, Morphagene and W/ are adding to the action too. Reverb as ever is Valhalla DSP.

Talking of Christian Henson his recent video is very interesting on the topic of synthetic/natural sounds [below] and goes a long way to explain why I love adding layers of distortion to everything :-)"

Why Are Synths So Difficult To Mix???

Christian Henson Music

"Do you find synths difficult to mix? If so what methods do you employ, a bit of distortion, a spring, a plate?"

simple things - improvising with XTk , Roli Seaboard & equator and Digitakt

junklight

"busy day & was just in the mood for something simple. Been getting back into the Seaboard again.

You'll spot the Skulpt in shot - I've been playing that with the seaboard too & its new MPE update but that was earlier before I started recording."

slow music - Playing with the new w/ firmware

junklight

"Basically this whole patch/track snowballed out of playing with the exciting new firmware for the Whimsical Raps w/ module - this is using the delay mode. Absolutely no scripts on either Crow or Teletype for once. Having decided that it was a candidate for leaving the rack - I'm getting to know Rene a lot better and using it more. Ochd also proving to be superb - it gets used in *everything*. A proper 'value for money' purchase!

The new "landscape" setup is really helping me get to know modules better - because I can see them properly! Looking forward to the virus easing enough for me to go for an eye test and get some varifocals or something (I'm not hurrying 'cos of all my heart stuff )

I stopped caring about "views" so it builds very slowly, won't interest the watch the first 10 seconds and skip crowd at all. Eagle eyed viewers might spot a little doggy in the mix :-) The video layout possibly marginally better than last weeks but still working on it"

disquiet0441 - river stones - MLR with microphones and IPad synth

junklight

"Disquiet Junto Project 0441: Three Stones

This weeks Disquiet Junto is

Step 1: Find three stones from one location.
Step 2: Consider how the stones can be thought to connect (physically, historically, culturally, psychologically) with where they originated, with a sense of region, of place, of terroir.

Now 1 is kind of easy I live at the edge of the English Lake District. Mountains and Sea. I picked up Three River stones on Saturday on our wanderings and was thinking about 2. People tend to think about the Lake District as a natural landscape but of course nothing could be further from the truth. First of all when Stone Age and then Iron Age man arrived here it was covered in trees. Those people set to work in the landscape right away - not just clearing but also working the stone. High in the Langdale valley is a place where green stone axes were made. They seem to have been ceremonial and have been found all over Europe. In Queen Elizabeth the first’s time Copper and Silver were mined here. Slate has been an export for a long time too. As we head towards the coast the abundance of Iron Ore helped the burgeoning ship building trade blossom.

So Industrial Beauty…..

A video and a recording"

A drone for Disquiet Junto 440: scales scrapped off a fish

Published on Jun 6, 2020 junklight

"I take part in the Disquiet Junto project from time to time. I find it pushes me into places I don't normally take my music when given constraints.

This week the instruction was simple 'There is just one step: Throw off the shackles of A440 and make a piece of music in your favorite alternate tuning.' I'd coincidently been reading about Alvin Lucier and had already bought a cheap SDR because of his interest in radio so this seemed the direction to take.

The piece when I played it turned into being a drone

The code for the Norns instrument is here https://github.com/junklight/swv and you can find the Crow script here https://github.com/junklight/swv"
