"I believe I am up to 54 synths purchased and 34 sold in the last year. I keep saying I'm done but......

- All sound demo segments are played with absolutely no plans for the patches I am going to use or what I am going to play. I'm just winging it. Obviously.

- All audio is recorded dry, straight from the synths. Any effects you hear are internal effects built into that synth.

- All synths and everything else were purchased at regular prices. I have never been given a demo model or even loaned something by any company. I bought all this stuff.

- No, I'm not rich. The buying spree started with selling some synths I already had. Then when I wanted more stuff, I sold off more collectibles I already owned. The synths I decided not to keep then funded more synth purchases. I run a record label by myself and also work a full-time normal job. I worked my ass off for all this stuff.

- Yes, I know I have the Imovie skills of the average 8-year-old. I've never even owned a smart phone.

- This project has been really fun and taught me that the most sought after "classics" are not automatically for everyone. It also taught me that youtube synth demos and comparisons are not the final word. Nothing beats sitting down with an instrument and playing it.

Check out https://secretrecords.bandcamp.com for releases by The Residents, Chrome, Norman Westberg (Swans), etc plus my own Zebras, Logan 5, and VP solo ambient music projects.

Yamaha SK15

images via this auction

"Steel front panel, (real wood sides!) [hmm...*], with 22 dedicated sliders. There are 7 for the organ: 5 of these act as drawbars...16', 8', 5 1/3', 4', and 2'. The other two in this section are for organ percussion and a highpass filter to extend the range of organ sounds made with the drawbars. Good Hammond B3 sims to be had here in this section. The Strings section has 2 sliders, sipmly to mix and match amounts of sawtooth wave in 16' and 8' flavours. The organ section's brilliance control i.e. the highpass filter can be used to trim off the high frequencies of the strings' sawtooth waveforms. The Polysynth section has indie sliders for: volume, wave footage (mix variable from 16' to 8'), EG depth and 4 slider for the ADSR. This section also has a slider for filter resonance amount. The other remaining sliders are used for LFO control... depth, delay, and rate.

As I mentioned, there are three sections in the Symphonic esnsemble: Organ, Strings and Polysynth. Each is 7 note polyphonic and all 3 can be used together with no loss of polyphony. And here's where you can make some really magical sounds, because you can make composite sounds using all three sections that really sound wonderful! It's a bit like having a subtractive synth with simple additive features. Layering in some high organ harmonics over a subtractive analog filter sweep (this section is simple but sounds like a beefed up CS01 with 7 note poly), adding in some silky strings and running it thru the BEAUTIFUL swirly, sparkly shiny ensemble effect give me shivers cuz it sounds amazing! And the BIG bonus: every parameter has real-time control so you can get really expressive. There's also a foot volume pedal input that makes this thing really responsive even though the keys are not veleocity sensitive. Ahhh... magic!

Ther were 4 different SK series keyboards built: SK15, SK20, SK30 and SK50D. The 15 is the baby brother."

*I'm guessing it's veneer wood.

Yamaha SK50D

images via this auction

"Enormous analog synthesizer featuring two keyboards, a string section, two FM organ sections, a bass section, a polyphonic synthesizer section and a lead synth section. All the parts can be layered and played at the same time using the mixer section. This thing sounds great. It has built in tremolo and ensemble (chorus) effects. The organ is great. It can go from a B3 to the most haunting organ sounds ever made. The strings are very nice, and the synth parts need no introduction if you're familiar with the CS range of synthesizers. There is a lot of control over all the different sections. All the parameters you would expect to find on a synthesizer are there for the synth parts. Both organ sections have sliders that work as drawbars."
