52 Reason / Record Tips - Week 49: Thor Oscillator Types

YouTube Uploaded by PropellerheadSW on Mar 11, 2011

"Synth School enters its final and most advanced device starting this week. Strap in and get ready because we're about to tackle the Thor Polysonic Synthesizer. Thor is called "polysonic" because it offers a smorgasbord of various oscillator types, filter types, and signal routing options.

This week we'll be focusing on the first major oscillator types in Thor. Each oscillator has a specific synth technology behind it and each one has a particular sound that will be suitable for different uses. If you've found yourself relying on presets for Thor or if you tend to go straight to the analog oscillator because it's familiar to you, you'll definitely want to get to know these other oscillators. They'll expand your sonic palette and ramp up your sound design chops."

Electronic percussion improvisation - navigating sound space through playing

YouTube Uploaded by otoskope on Mar 11, 2011

"Percussionist Olof Olsson performs an improvisation on an electronic percussion instrument designed and programmed by Palle Dahlstedt.

In this instrument, the musician navigates a huge space of possible sounds, through playing and listening. All pads play a single polyphonic sound engine, but each pad generates its own set of parameters. The size of the cluster of parameter sets can be varied, and the sounds of different pads can be blended, i.e., a pad has an effect also on the sound of the other pads. At any time, the whole cluster of sounds can be moved in any direction. When the musician presses a pedal switch, the cluster is moved towards the current sound, and then this subspace can be explored - so the sounds are changed through playing, and the timberal variation is virtually limitless.

This instrument is a percussion adaption of the vector mapping technique used in the instruments Palle Dahlstedt designed for duo pantoMorf.

The percussion pad is a DrumKAT, and the instrument is implemented in a Nord Modular G2, visible to the right in the video."

EMS Putney Improvisations - Tribute to Delia Derbyshire

Full details here.

"Delia Derbyshire was one of the pioneers of electronic music during and after her tenure at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. She was both a gifted composer and an audacious and precise engineer. Since seeing her in documentaries, and hearing her music I’m both awed by her and have a synth-geek’s crush on her. She was on my mind as I recorded these pieces, and I dedicate them to her memory.

The 5 parts of this piece were recorded in one evening, with no editing or overdubbing. The Putney was plugged into the Stereo Memory Man pedal, and the pedal was plugged into my computer."

Earthquake in Japan

To everyone in Japan and others in the region affected by the tsunamis, we hope you are and will stay safe. We are thinking about you.

The following came in on the AH list regarding Modeless Factory in Japan. If anyone out there wants me to put up a post for them feel free to send it in. I know we have many readers in the region. Contact info is on the bottom right of the site, and of course feel free to leave a comment in this post below.

via Maciak on the AH list:
"Following the news about the earthquake in Japan, I managed to contact Ko Okatake (Modeless factory) who let me know he was ok but he is suffering from electricity cuts and hence has no internet access. The message to AH is that Modeless Factory will be closed for a few days.

Ko also asked me to forward this message to other forums but since I subscribe to AH only, will those of you who know where that info might need to be directed do so, please?

Needless to say, condolences to all of the list members who or whose families were affected by this calamity.

Maciek"

東北地方太平洋沖地震 直後の我家 Giga Earthquake hit my room !!

YouTube Uploaded by jetdaisuke on Mar 11, 2011

"横揺れなので、どうせ震源から遠いと思ってなめてました。東京在住ですが、おそらく2分以上にわたり長くて次第に大きくなる揺れが続いたと記憶しています。震度5強だったそう。おかげで部屋はめちゃくちゃ。本棚固定しているのにこの有様ですよ。地震は本当に恐ろしい!マグニチュード8.8もの巨大地震ということで、観測史上最大だそうです。個人的には阪神大震災で経験した揺れに次ぐ巨大地震でした。"

Googlish:
"Since rolling, I was far from the epicenter and I lick anyway. But living in Tokyo, is remembered as the shaking lasted for more than two minutes long, gradually perhaps. It was a strong intensity 5. Thanks The rooms are a mess. but it is this that secures the shelf affairs. Earthquakes are scary! magnitude 8.8 earthquake in that huge TV, it seems the maximum recorded history. I personally have experienced tremors following the Great Hanshin Earthquake Could large earthquakes. "

"More fun with the M-Audio Venom. Note this is not a proper demo. I am creating a TouchOSC template for all editable parameters in single mode of the Venom and I thought I'd throw this video up. The Venom is turning out to be a surprisingly deep synth. In this video I'm just tweaking the distortion parameters in the Insert FX page of my editor. Wireless control is via The Missing Link. Sliders from left to right: Depth, PreGain, PostGain and High Cutoff. The bottom end drops out in the video as I am still using the mic in on my Canon T2i. No time to sync audio and video just yet. Trust me, it sounds MUCH better live. The more I play with this synth the more I am impressed. I don't want to give too much away before my proper review, but it sounds really, really good. There are things you can do with this synth that you simply cannot do with others. This is a deep and powerful synth. Note this is Single mode with only one patch. The Venom supports Multi mode with up to four patches active."

Marsynth Nomad Beta Demo 1

YouTube via Uploaded by marsynth on Mar 10, 2011

"This is the first demo of the new Marsynth Nomad: a high quality tremolo paired with a unique and complex feedback system.

In this video, I am simply running a guitar through the Nomad with not other effects. You can hear a bit of a hum in parts of the demo which is a result of me using a single coil pickup guitar (not an artifact of the Nomad!). The Nomad equally handles other inputs like vocals, synthesizers, and other sound sources, some of which I will include in another demo. Of course, the Nomad is just as fun with no input at all, wandering off into self-oscillating bliss.

Beta units are being tested now, and production units will be available within a few months.

Keep up to date on Nomad updates as well as other Marsynth news here: http://www.marsynth.com/

Thanks for watching!"

"Octave rounding already lets you arpeggiate and run scales very fast. I made a change to the rules that simplifies pentatonic runs so that those are easy to play very fast as well."
