RIP Dr. John Eaton

Videos by The Snapshots Foundation

Dr. John Eaton passed away yesterday on Dec 2 at the age of 80. For those not familiar with him he was a composer who worked closely with Bob Moog in the 1960s, influencing the development of the first synthesizers as we have come to know them today. The first synthesizer to feature a keyboard, the Synket by Paul Ketoff, was made for John Eaton. Above is a collection of interviews by The Snapshots Foundation starting with the Synket [see the Synket channel for previous post including images].

On the Synket via Wikipedia: "A working group at Roman Electronic Music Center, composer Gino Marinuzzi, Jr., designer Giuliano Strini, MSEE, and sound engineer and technician Paolo Ketoff in Italy; their vacuum-tube modular 'FonoSynth' slightly predated (1957–58) Moog and Buchla's work. Later the group created a solid-state version, the 'Synket'. Both devices remained prototypes (except a model made for John Eaton who wrote a 'Concert Piece for Synket and Orchestra'), owned and used only by Marinuzzi, notably in the original soundtrack of Mario Bava's sci-fi film 'Terrore nello spazio"'(a.k.a. Planet of the Vampires, 1965), and a RAI-TV mini-series, "Jeckyll".[30][31][32]"

Image and quote from John Eaton via The Bob Moog Foundation.

"I think of all of the people that I've known in my life, Bob Moog was the most generous. He was the most interested in other people's ideas. He was just and extraordinary human being." -- John Eaton (March 30, 1935 - December 2, 2015)"

Roland JX-03

"quick audio test. no external effects. Powering the unit from USB direct from an iMac. Midi sequence and audio are also using the USB cable.

In my opinion Roland have done a great job recreating the sound of the jx3p. the build quality is solid. The chorus is very similar to the original even down to the noise level while the chorus is engaged. Looking forward to a larger size ACB synth."

Sequential Circuits Pro One SN 0144 with Extras

"This is the J-Wire Keyboard version (#0144) and all 37 rubber key stops were replaced. If you trigger the Pro One from the keyboard itself there are some sticky keys however, I'm including a mint Kenton USB Solo which I've always used to trigger the Pro One without an issue whatsoever.

Wine Country documented that the sequencer and arpeggiator was operating to spec but I've never used it. I didn't care much about the sequencer since I was using my DAW but the arp may need service if you really want to use it. This was never an issue for me since I triggered the Pro One through the USB Solo and used Live's arpeggiator which has far more arp options than the Pro One's. In addition you can use the USB Solo's LFO that has a lot of waveform options & sync capabilities.

This is an honest overview of the synthesizer and sold as-is. I take excellent care of all of my gear and you can rest assured that you'll receive her shipped with extreme care.

You'll be walking away with more than any other eBay auction:

This sale comes complete with:
- A mint (wood sided) Pro One
- A mint Kenton USB Solo + all necessary cables
- Original Operation Manual
- Original Spec Sheet
- Original Patch Sheets from Sequential Circuits + some from the original owner + some blank ones
- Wine Country Receipt (over $700 in maintenance)
- 1 Mogami TS --> TS cable to get you immediately plugged in and started"

NERDSYNTH DEMO 2015

Published on Dec 3, 2015 firestARTer

Audio comes in at :35. Additional audio demos below. The NERDSYNTH was first posted here on MATRIXSYNTH back on March 16 of 2014. The engine then was based on the ATMegatron from Soulsby Synthesizers. There's no mention of it below, so I'm not sure if that has changed.

Prototype image to the left. Render below.

"The Nerdsynth is a hardware analogue and digital synthesizer, groovebox, sampler, tracker, visualizer, digitizer, music instrument and experimentizer in one machine.

This video shows the recent development stage around december 2015. The Nerdsynth has 6 polyphonic tracks which are connected to several soundchips/synthesizers. 1 Track to the internal Nerdsynth soundchip, 1 ( with 4 sub tracks ) is used as sampler. The 4 other tracks are connected to external sound cartridges which are inserted in the Nerdsynth. Those are the synthesizer cores and soundchips of the ATMegatron, Meeblip Anode, DSP-G1 and Soundgin. More cartridges are in development like a SID cartridge, YM/AY, OPL3 and several analogue and digital synthesizer designs.
The aim is to make the Nerdsynth a real product but there is still alot to do hard and softwarewise.

ONE MUSIC PRODUCTION TOOL FOR ALL YOUR DESIRES!

AudioThing Hand Clapper

Published on Dec 3, 2015 audiothing

"Get this plugin here: http://www.audiothing.net/instruments...

Hand Clapper is a drum synthesizer plugin (VST/AU/AAX) dedicated to claps sounds. The internal design is inspired by a famous Japanese percussion synthesiser from the '80. There are three internal noise sources that are used to recreate the classic sound of vintage analog drum machines. It's also possible to load external samples and sculpt them with the same circuit emulation."
