Dave Smith: OB6 vs Pro6

Published on Jul 20, 2018 Starsky Carr

"A quick tour of DSI's OB6 and Prophet .

I've tried to give a feel for how they sound individually rather than recreate sound on both as they've got such different characters. They're so similar in their architecture, but so different sonically, I hope I've captured it in 30 mins.

This might give an idea of which is best for your studio, which might cut through in your mixes or fit with your current rig.

I don't consider one is 'better' than the other, they simply have different characters.

Hopefully someone will find it useful ;)_

enjoy....

New Synthesizers.com Q170 MIDI Gates

Published on Jul 20, 2018 synthesizersdotcom

And a silver Q106A Oscillator.

via Synthesizers.com

"The Q170 MIDI Gates module produces gate signals from a stream of MIDI messages, either from a keyboard, a DAW or any MIDI source. Each of the 8 outputs can be programmed for one or more MIDI note messages or Continuous Controller messages.

Gate outputs can be used to select steps on a Q960 sequencer, trigger envelopes, change filter settings and many other things.

A MIDI Thru output allows daisy-chaining of many modules.

The MIDI output is a version of the incoming MIDI signals but with the programmed notes filtered out. This allows you to set aside certain notes on a keyboard for controlling things via an independent gate signal.

To program an output, simply press the Set button and send MIDI note or CC messages. MIDI channel numbers are recognized. Notes sent once cause the output to follow the note on/off messages and operate like a simple keyboard gate signal. Notes sent twice cause the output to toggle On then Off as note On messages are received.

A special mode allows gate outputs to be programmed to respond to MIDI real-time messages, sometimes called sync - start, stop, continue, clock. The clock output can be programmed with a division of /1,/2,/3,/4,/6,/8,/12,/16,/24,/32."

"As I age, I'm told I'm no longer hip
for my filter let's me down as I make another floydian slip"

This is a reflective groove about aging.

Update on the synths being used:

"The Hammond organ is NI's B4 VSTi, and the acoustic drums are from Easy drummer. I am also using the DFAM for a constant 'Floydian' drum part through out. The Behringer is doing all the synth parts including the atmospheric noise hits. I am also using a VSTi string machine emulator called 'Loomer' string ensemble. The Guitar parts are all from a VSTi as well."

The Paths Of Old - a Moog Grandmother demo track

Published on Jul 20, 2018

"The product of my first week with the new Moog Grandmother synthesizer, this Berlin-School-inspired electronic rock instrumental was made using only the Moog. No other instruments or effects were used, and no EQ was applied at any stage - just a bit of multi-band compression on the final mix. The Grandmother was tracked into Cubase through a Chandler TG-2 pre-amp plugged into a MOTU 1248 AVB interface."

Mulholland Drive on the DX7

Published on Jul 20, 2018 Kris Lennox

"Quick recording of 'Betty's Theme', as it seems to be a favourite with MHD fans. Also filmed to show how to play it. Of course, not difficult at all - but you'll need to be able to stretch a tenth i.e. the first LH chord is a D major as D-A-F#.

The same stretch also occurs on G, Em, F#m etc.

PS I just had a listen to the original: on the second D chord, the RH should play D and A, rather than just the A as I'm playing it. I had only listened to the original twice before sitting down to record it. If there are any other omissions, I'll write them up here.

Sound isn't similar to the original; it is just a stock sound from the DX.

PPS what's with hashtags appearing above video titles? Seems to be a YT algorithm generating these. The mind boggles.

Best
Kris"
