#jamuary2020 Day 9 - Arturia MiniBrute 2S, Korg Monologue and Volca Kick

Published on Jan 9, 2020 Oscillator Sink

See the Synthuary label for more. Synthuary because these are the Jamuary synth videos. More below.

"There was another jam all ready to record before this one came about, but at the last moment I pulled a creative hissy-fit, tore the patch down and went in a very different direction.

The Minibrute is heading through the trusty Zoom MS-CDR70 providing two lots of delay (to add rhythmic interest) and a reverb (because reverb). The Monologue is heading through the Digitech Polara reverb (because reverb) and the Volca Kick is dry as a bone (because I ran out of pedals)."

First Demo Video & Pics of the New KORG ARP 2600

Uploaded on Jan 9, 2020 GAK

KORG ARP 2600 FS posts

Update2: The announcement is up here.

Update: Looks like the video was changed to private. Good reminder to be checking the site often - to catch things before they get pulled. :) BTW, the video stated the new 2600 is based on the first version of the ARP 2600. That is technically incorrect as the first version was actually the Blue Marvin/Blue Meanie. You can find two videos of one here, and some pics in various archived posts. There was also a Grey Meanie. From that link: "First was the Blue Marvin about 20 of these were made next was the Grey Meanie 35 or so were made". This new 2600 has the design scheme of the first major runs of the next 2600. Thanks goes to @AzevedoAudio for the reminder!

"The new Korg 2600 Arp is here!
Luke pops in to Demo this beast."

Note the "sequencer" is a programmable arpeggiator:

"3620 Keyboard While faithful to the original design, the functionality of the 3620 Keyboard has been greatly enhanced for this limited ARP 2600 release. The 3620 Keyboard contains 49 full-size keys, aftertouch, portamento, and is also duophonic, allowing two keys to be played at once – Single or Multiple Triggering is available. In addition, the duophonic keyboard can use an optional foot switch to lock the interval between any two notes, without retuning the oscillators during performance. Vibrato can be added via a dedicated circuit controlled by aftertouch, or by the onboard LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator), using any of three available waveforms. Most noticeable is the addition of a flexible Arpeggiator that allows a user-defined pattern to be manually sequenced and played back. Still present are the original Pitch Bend knob and the Two Octave Up / Two Octave Down Transpose switch. Connecting the keyboard to the main unit now uses a secure eight-pin din cable.

Processing Powerhouse The ARP 2600 reveals its modular nature by the unique assortment of valuable, esoteric, and individually patch-able modules it contains. To begin, there are a set of parallel-wired Multiple jacks that enhance the patching possibilities – allowing the same control signal to be sent to multiple locations, for example. Three independent Voltage Processors provide scalable control voltages, or can act to attenuate any control signal. Use the Lag Generator to delay the start of any control signal. The Noise Generator is tunable to deliver White, Pink, and Low-Frequency noise, plus everything in between. A series of three Inverters can reverse the polarity of any signal. The Electronic Switch can be sync’d to either the internal clock or any external clock signal, as can the Sample & Hold rate. Most importantly, the Arp 2600 includes a dedicated Preamp and Envelope Follower for processing an external audio signal."

The synths:

SATURN-4 based on the Roland Jupiter-4

"The first under the moniker and the first self-contained polyphonic synth under the brand, this synth is a 4-voice poly from 1978. The voices can be synced to create a meaty 4-osc monophonic sound and has been famously used by acts such as the Cars, Duran Duran, Simple Minds, Vangelis and Meat Beat Manifesto. For this synth we deeply-sampled the oscillator section to replicate the hardware use as closely as possible with samples. Every position of the oscillator section was multisampled, and every sound in the library was captured with and without the hardware unison and hardware ensemble effect providing an incredibly rich and authentic sound."

SATURN-6 based on the Roland Jupiter-6

"A true vintage gem, this 12-oscillator, 6-voice analog polysynth can create massively thick sounds - a pad and drone dream machine. Debuting in 1983 this instrument has been famously used by The Prodigy, Crystal Method, Chemical Brothers, Devo, Tangerine Dream, Human League and Orbital among others. A comprehensive sampling provides two unison settings for all presets allowing you to create a wide variety of sounds from modulating drones to ripping basses."

SATURN-8 based on the Roland Jupiter-8

"One of the most iconic analog synthesizers ever produced, and the brands flagship, this featured synth sports 16-oscillators on 8-voices with cross-modulation, sync, PWM, an HPF, variable LPF, an LFO and two EGs. An incredible polyphonic unison mode allows all 16 oscillators to be stacked on a single note! We captured everything, with and without the hardware unison, giving you an incredible catalog of powerful analog sounds."

MERCURY-80 based on the Roland MKS-80

"The expanded rackmount brother of our Saturn-6, this 16-oscillator 8-voice super-synth came equipped with fully-analog VCOs and a low boost circuit. Able to replicate many sounds of its keyboard counterpart, this synth wasn't simply a rackmount adaptation but a unique instrument with its own character and strengths. Due to its friendly form factor these were in high demand in the day, popular on tours but equally potent in the studio, used extensively by acts like Tangerine Dream, Herbie Hancock, Vangelis, John Carpenter, Talk Talk, and Madonna. We captured every sound with and without the hardware unison including many unique and inspiring tones."

"Yamaha YC61 Stage Keyboard Brings Classic Organ and Vintage Keys Back to the Stage

BUENA PARK, Calif. (January 9, 2020) — Yamaha today introduced the YC61 Stage Keyboard, a new organ-focused instrument combining the sought-after organ sounds of popular music with the sonic versatility and real-time control today’s keyboardists demand, all backed by legendary Yamaha quality.

Reproducing authentic organ sound, control and expressiveness in a compact package has been elusive for keyboard players. Using proprietary Yamaha technology, the YC61 provides an authentic and expressive playing experience.
The YC61 employs a newly developed Virtual Circuitry Modeling (VCM) Organ engine. VCM models the behavior of vintage electronics at the component level. This allows realistic organ character sound along with familiar and modern controls organ players will appreciate. Authenticity is further enhanced by a new VCM Rotary Speaker effect, capturing the two-speed, physically spinning speaker that’s as much a part of the organ sound as a guitar amp is to an electric guitar.

As on the original instruments, the musician has full command of the sound via drawbars, percussion, rotary speaker speed and more for an expressive and unique sound. Organ aficionados will appreciate the ability to personalize “under the hood” organ and rotary speaker settings like drawbar leakage, key click, rotor speed up and more. An all-new 61-note waterfall keyboard is true to the organ legacy and makes for smooth rock and jazz playing techniques such as “palm smears.”

The YC61 goes beyond organ sounds. Two comprehensive “Keys” sections offer authentic acoustic pianos, soulful electric pianos, realistic strings and brass, analog-style synths, and more. Dedicated effects like delay, chorus, distortion and more give keyboardists the ability to quickly create new, inspiring sounds on the fly. This means the YC61 could take the place of two or more other instruments, simplifying keyboardists’ setups and reducing load-in time.

Thanks to its aluminum construction, the YC61 is as rugged and roadworthy as it is lightweight (under 7kg/16 pounds!) and compact.

“The organ is the original keyboard, and in some ways, the original synthesizer,” said Nate Tschetter, manager, Synthesizer Marketing, Yamaha. “It always adds a soulful sound to the music, regardless of genre. We hope YC61 provides that essence of soulfulness to keyboard players through its sound and controls.”

Pricing and Availability

The Yamaha YC61 Stage Keyboard (MSRP: $2,499) will ship to retailers in June 2020. For more information, visit Yamaha.io/yc61"
