The One Ring Theme on Roland RS-202 stringer

video upload by MIDERA

"Some friends are swapping gear and using my place to swap as neither live near each other... so right now I'm sitting with a Roland RS-202 for a bit (don't worry, I was allowed to test it out and provide feedback).

As you may know - I also have a Yamaha SK30 that I can't seem to bring myself to part with. And of course I figured why not see how they compare. Once they were next to each other, I could really tell where they differed. I would say the Roland RS-202 is 'silky' and has a very pleasing sound to it. The Yamaha SK30 is a bit harsher I guess. But they're very very different in almost every other way.

The RS-202 has basically no controls except 'tone', a few switches for brass or string sounds, vibrato, and sustain. It does have a wonderful sounding ensemble effect with two settings.

The SK30 has an envelope for the shared single filter on the polysynth, an organ section, tremolo and ensemble effects (they don't sound as good as the RS-202 ensemble), a fairly complex and robust routing system, detuning, and my personal favorite, the solo section which is a really nice sounding single VCO monosynth.

Also, the SK30 is like 3X bigger than the RS-202. I really dislike how large the SK30 is.

Well, here's all I could think to write, and it's not even mine. It's from the Lord of the Rings... but I'm guessing you knew that.

I used the Strymon Volante pedal and Eventide Blackhole VST."

Keystep 37 + Moog Minitaur + Analog Rytm + Rhodes = DAWless Jam!

video upload by Jeremy Parker

"I just put together this cool little DAWless setup for coming up with tunes, jamming, and even practicing over changes. The Arturia Keystep 37 is the sequencer and controller for the Moog Minitaur, so the basslines can be held down, while I'm free to play on the Rhodes MKIII EK-10. The Elektron Analog Rytm MKII is the drum machine and provides clock to the KeyStep. Overall, this is a fun little rig, and a good way to come up with ideas and just have fun."

Desert Songs - Biodata to MIDI

video upload by Love Hultén

"Desert Songs uses Plantwave - a small device that translates biodata from organic material into MIDI. It's not magic and the plants are not composing, it's simply biofeedback creating true organic 'randomness'. Tiny changes in electrical current - the plants act as variable resistors. Cacti was used for this project due to their very sparse and sporadic activity. The cacti garden includes a few different specimens hooked up to probes, and outputs for individual plants can be changed as you go using patch points upfront. The MIDI signals are sent to a Korg NTS-1 for simple waveshaping and then drenched in atmosphere using the Microcosm from Hologram Electronics. To complete the biolab environment look, a custom MIDI visualizer was made mimicking chloroplasts under microscope."

"The Korg PSS-50 Super Section basically is a drum machine groovebox with 40 preset patterns and 8 interchangeable fills/ endings, making 16 of "your very own" variations storable. Variations are composed of drum sounds, bass and accompaniment, each volume level being separately controllable. The membrane keys, offering 12 different types of chords, can be used to transpose variations to different pitches.

One of the best features of this machine is the backing chords, which kind of sounds like an Omnichord, or a nice Casio chord, but with a lot more control, and variation because each chord can be played 12 ways (MAJ, MIN, 7th, DIM, AUG, etc..)! It has a very nice, warm analog feel to it. It has a bunch of different rhythms and styles ranging from Rock, Reggae, Latin, and Heavy Metal.

The bass drum, snare, rimshot, open/closed hihat, hi/lo tom and handclaps sound like early PCM samples, just with their own, peculiar charm. The warm, analog-like bass and chords synth sounds could originate from a simplified subtractive synthesis similar to the Korg Poly 800!

FEATURES:

• TONE GENERATORS: RHYTHM x 8 (bass drun, snare drum, high-hat open, high-hat close, tom high, tom low, handclaps)

• ACCOMPANIMENT (piano, electric piano. honky-tonk piano, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, jazz guitar, banjo, brass, synthesizer, organ, strings)

• RHYTHM PATTERN: 48 pattems (8 beat I-II, 16 beat I II, new wave, electro pop, disco I-II, rock'n roll, boogie. ballad I-II. hard rock I-II-III, heavy metal, jazz waltz, 4 beat I-II. big band, fusion I-II-III-IV, bossanova. samba, cha-cha, mambo, merengue, latin rock, reggae I-II, 2 beat. 3 beat, march, folk, country, bluegrass, shuffle 1-11, break & ending x 8)

• ARRANGEABLE AREA: 16 Patterns

• CHORD: Maj, m, m6. ,m7 ,m9, 6, 7. Maj , 9, dim, Aug, sus4 on, each root (C — B)

• PROGRAMMABLE BANK: Song bank x 8 (maximum 80 bars/bank). Song chain

• INDICATOR: Chord name display, Song/pattern display, conductor display, Chain step/bar number, Song number Pattern number

• MIXER: Rhythm volume. Bass volume, Accompaniment volume, Exrernal input volume, Stereo volume"

"VERY GOOD Condition. More like Excellent. Has small crack on the programming side membrane #8 button. Volume slider makes a little bit of noise. Other than that, awesome synth. Everything works & Sounds great."

ORHACK and Mic on a Snare Drum

video upload by Critter & Guitari

"ORHACK is a new version of the classic ORAC patch made by Audivit! Download it here: https://patchstorage.com/orhack/
Use ORHACK as a groovebox, effects processor, or BOTH. It works great with the Critter & Guitari Microphone. Thanks to Audivit for making this patch and thanks to Mark Harris aka TheTechnobear for making ORAC!"

Creepin' around

video upload by MIDI IN

"A creepy tune for a dark and cold January Sunday evening.

As you can see, I've worked within 6 channels with MIDISID as an external instrument so that all of the audio can be captured from the back of MIDISID in one take.

I sat down last night with no ideas but after a little messing around we were almost at this stage. A little more tweaking today."

Eventide Micha | Tone Row Sequencer

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"* Reupload due to a major melodic minor error.
A quick patch for a lazy sunday. I recently got the Eventide Micha and it looks way more complicated than it is, so it's just a matter of applying power, patch gate/CV and off you go. For best results (chords) you may want to get yourself a VCO with polyphonic midi capabilities (Poly Cinematic, BitBox, Vector Wave) but these are rare. So for equally best results is also cool to use the chord outputs to modulate the timbre (or any CV input) of a clever VCO like the Loquelic Iteritas Percido.

Micha is a sequencer, but a weird one. Instead of playing notes, you'll play intervals. Now it may not be obvious how cool that is, but it will exponentially expand your musical vocabulary. For me, storytelling is very important and with Misha you simply press a 'plus' when you want to raise some tension, and a [minus] when you want people to relax. Misha works with tone rows, which basically comes down to moving through notes and chords in a scale. So you simply pick a scale and start improvising.
