In the Loop Episode 8 E-Mu Music Systems Documentary

If you are a fan of the Emulator family, EMAX, and some history of sampling and synths, we have a local TV show called In The Loop and this months episode is on EMU Systems and includes interviews with founders Dave Rossum and Scott Wedge as well as early employees Kevin Monahan and Max Mobley.
Tune in 5/18 or 6/1 at 8:30PM (pacific time) on the internet or local Santa Cruz cable TV for our little EMU documentary. Here is some more details.

"You are correct, it was not a full fledged documentary but an episode of a show my
wife, Denise Gallant, started about a year ago called In The Loop - Art & Technology. The discussion was shot live by volunteer community TV members and Denise edited in bits and pieces from material we had or found. I think that is how I found the Emulator Sampler User Forum. We only had an hour to shoot the round-table interview. We needed another hour at least. Alas, this is all a labor of love and without funding we are limited in the scope of the project. We would love to do a real documentary and have a lot of old video that has never seen the light of day.
The Emulator1, Emulator II and Emax were all 8 Bit instruments but each used a different type of 8 Bit Compression to attempt to improve signal to noise, etc.. . They also approached pitch shifting differently. The Emulator II could be over-saturated, kind of like analog tape, and it sounded good. I don't think that was by design. It was necessary to develop a chip to reduce parts and costs and the E Chip was the first attempt. It had its pluses and minuses and we learned from it and it led to the G Chip which was really an incredible piece of technology.
I don't know if other former Emu people are on this forum. I only discovered it myself recently, but I will forward links to some that I think might be interested. Thanks for the feeback!"

"took this 'snap' this morning of the setting used on the microma prototypes for the 'three shadows' demo/vid that I did earlier in the week so that I can set it up again- This weekend- it's full on work getting the final works done for manufacture! Note the desktop version is now named 'micromac- D' and the rack version shall be 'micromac-R'"

"As we hit production of the micromac- her's one of the last videos from the prototype units- this video features the desktop version doing baqss lines and the 3U format version doing some strange glide stuff! It's been an interesting experiment- the keyboard controllers are 2 x Korg Prophecies doing the arpegiation thing at different timings! Apart from my own designs featured here- I'd highly recommend 2 x Prophecies as keyboard controllers! I guess all this sound coming from such small units....starts to erase the need for the massive modular...especially if you after this kind of sound! All played live....and yes, the video needs a touch of brightening slash contrast!"

"On the face of it, this is a simple little preset synth, but it is capable of making some classic sounds and can be very expressive - it's a really enjoyable synth to play, and very easy to achieve some great sounds. I understand that these synths contain the classic Korg35 filter chips that were used in the MS series synths, and certainly this can sound very like an MS-10. Experimentation can yield surprising results (particularly that you can press two preset buttons at once to mix the sounds) - the two Synthe buttons allow further tonal shaping using the manual filter and modulation depth controls.
OMD used it extensively, as did Human League - add a little delay/reverb/phasing and this little synth can sound very big."

"This a crazy rare treasure trove of vintage 1970's original material from the Electronic Music Laboratories Inc, (EML), makers of the Electrocomp Synthesizer line. The company was based in Vernon, Connecticut and made a line of quasi-modular synths that competed with Moog, Arp and Oberheim. More rare than these other well known names, these synthesizers had unique features for the price and a distinct sound to them.
Included in this package are:
(1) EML Family of Synthesizer Brochure, half folded into a four page brochure. The last quarter page is a response card that was returned, presumably to receive the other brochures that are included. This brochure includes pictures and features of the EML 101, EML 200, EML 400 Series and the Syn-Key
(1) "The Best Portable Synthesizer In The World" Electrocomp 101, half folded into a four page brochure with detailed illustrations and technical features. Note the price of $1495 back then! The keyboard player in my high school and college band has this synth and I spent many hours hearing it do bass lines and leads, cool stuff!! It was duophonic, patchable and hot stuff at the time!
(1) This Synthesizer Started a Revolution! ElectroComp 200, half folded into a four page brochure with detailed illustrations and technical features (note there are two of these in the picture, but only one is included in this auction). This is an interesting unit that seems to be designed to teach synthesize to students at school and appears to be an "expander" unit to the 101 with a price of $950
(1) Todays Sound, The Right Price!, Electrocomp 500 $895 half folded into a four page brochure with detailed illustrations and technical features. This one does not have patch points and appears to hard connect key features from the 101.
They are in excellent condition and perhaps some of rarest vintage synth literature from the period. EML was relatively short lived despite the quality of their products and it is hard enough to find any of their synthesizers let alone a set of documents like this!!"

"Here a little idea I had last night. You will here only 2 sequences. The first one is an 8 step sequence from the Synthesizers.com Q960 doing a deep synth-bass sound. Row 1 provides the voltage for the pitch, row 2 the voltage to modulate the VCF and row 3 the voltage to modulate the VCA. The second 4-step sequence from the Doepfer MAQ16/3 drives a bongo-like sound from the self build Modular. Strings are performed on the Roland XP-80 and the solo's on the Waldorf Q Keyboard and the Clavia Nord Lead 1.
The video is filmed by my girlfriend Anne using my iPhone 4.

"音はホワイトノイズを使い、雨のバシャバシャ感、低いゴロゴロ感を出すためピンクノイズをフィルターモジュレーションとして使っています。
破裂音はHPFがあればもっとそれらしくなるのですが、MS-10にはLPFしかないのでミキサのEQをかけてごまかしています。"
Googlish: "I am using the pink noise modulation as a filter for sound "use the white noise, give a sense of splashing of rain, a sense of low rumbling.
Plosive is becoming more it seems if there is a HPF, not deception over the EQ of the mixer to the MS-10 because there is only LPF."
