Dave Smith Instruments DSM01 Curtis Filter Module Now Shipping!

"Dave Smith Instruments Ships DSM01 Curtis Filter Module

Acclaimed Synth Designer’s First-Ever Product for Modular Systems Now Available

San Francisco, CA—August 28, 2014—Dave Smith Instruments today began shipping the DSM01 Curtis Filter module, their first product for modular synthesizers. The module takes its name from the filter chip originally designed by the late Doug Curtis, which has been an integral part of the sound of Dave Smith’s instruments from the classic Sequential Circuits Prophet-5, all the way up to recent synths such as the Evolver, Mopho, Prophet ʼ08, and Prophet 12.

The DSM01 features a switchable 2/4-pole, resonant low-pass filter, as well as its own VCA. It is a standard 8HP wide, Eurorack-format device with interconnections made using 3.5 mm phone jacks. A carefully designed set of inputs and parameters allows voltage control of filter frequency and resonance. Filter slope is selectable between -12 dB and -24 dB. The module’s VCA features two separate outputs for the filter—one pre-VCA and the other, post-VCA. A unique feature of the filter is a Boost function that introduces harmonic distortion into the signal for more aggressive coloration.

“Having the widest tonal palette possible has always been the goal for modular users,” said Smith. “This product is our first—but significant—contribution to that world. We wanted to give modular users easy, affordable access to the classic Curtis filter sound, which I’ve always found very versatile and expressive.” The Curtis sound has often been described as saturated, brash, and powerful, and has also been fundamental to such vintage instruments as the Oberheim Xpander, Rhodes Chroma and Polaris, and Elka Synthex.

“The DSM01 packs a lot of sound-shaping power into a small package. We think modular users are going to get a lot of sonic mileage out of it,” said Smith.

The DSM01 Curtis Filter module is available now with a MAP of $179."

Dave Smith Instruments Formally Announces First Eurorack Module - DSM01 Curtis Filter

Looks like the filter module featured in this video will be released:

"Dave Smith Instruments Debuts DSM01 Curtis Filter Module

Acclaimed Synth Designer Introduces First-Ever Module for Modular Systems

San Francisco, CA—July 17, 2014—Dave Smith Instruments today introduced the DSM01 Curtis Filter module, their first offering for modular synthesizers. The module takes its name from the original filter chip designed by the late Doug Curtis and provides both a switchable 2/4-pole low-pass filter and a VCA. The Curtis filter is an integral part of the sound of many synthesizers created by Dave Smith, including the classic Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 and Pro-One, and more recent instruments such as the Evolver, Mopho, Prophet ʼ08, and Prophet 12.

The 'Curtis sound,' which is often described as saturated, brash, and powerful, was fundamental to not only Smith’s synthesizers, but also to such highly-regarded instruments as the Oberheim Xpander, Rhodes Chroma and Polaris, PPG Wave, Korg MonoPoly, Waldorf Wave, Elka Synthex, and many others. “We wanted to make the classic Curtis filter sound, which I’ve always found very versatile and expressive, readily available to modular users,” said Smith. 'Adding the DSM01 to a modular system is an easy way to give it the sonic edge that people typically associate with a vintage Sequential synth. But it’s also a big part of the sound of my current synths such as the Prophet 12.'

The module is a standard 8HP wide, Eurorack-format device with interconnections made using 3.5 mm phone jacks.

A carefully designed set of inputs and parameters allows voltage control of filter frequency and resonance. Filter slope is selectable between -12 dB and -24 dB. The module also provides its own VCA and features two separate outputs for the filter—one pre-VCA and the other, post-VCA. A unique feature of the filter is a Boost function that introduces harmonic distortion into the signal for more aggressive coloration.

'With modular synths, having the widest possible tonal palette to draw from has always been the name of the game. Our Curtis Filter module is our first, but significant contribution to that world. We think modular users are really going to get a lot of sonic mileage out of it.'

The DSM01 module will be available in August of 2014 with a MAP of $179.

Rheyne - Live Jam #171

Published on Apr 18, 2017 Rheyne

"Live looping with all sounds from Moog and Make Noise synths and modules. Each synth voice is played on a NI KompleteKontrol 49 keyboard, with presets stored on different MIDI channels for separate control of each voice.

The hi-hats are created by muting and un-muting a clock signal from a Make Noise Tempi, set to a 10ms duty cycle and fed to the VCA input of a Dave Smith DSM01 filter, which is receiving noise from one of the Moog Mother-32 modules. The S+H effect on the filter is from another clock signal on the Tempi sent to a Make Noise Wogglebug, with its random voltage output sent to the DSM01 VCF input. The Tempi is kept in sync with Ableton from one of the outs on an Expert Sleepers ES-8 and a clock signal from Silent Way.

MIDI loops are recorded in Ableton with a Novation Launchpad, and Lemur is running on an iPad as an Ableton remote. All effects are from Ableton. Audio was recorded with the ES-8 and a PreSonus 1818VSL, with the final output recorded to the balanced inputs of a Tascam DR-44 from the mixer."

DSM01 Curtis Filter Demo (RRich)

"A prototype of the first analog synth module offered by Dave Smith Instruments, a Low Pass Filter with additional VCA, based on the Curtis chip used in the Prophet08, Prophet12 and other DSI synths. It features VC Resonance, a switch for 12/24dB/Octave and a switch for Boost to drive the filter harder.

This demo is just a simple arpeggio, going through various knob positions with and without some echo, just to show a range of sounds."

"ID: stereo analog-like delay

Spacialization and delays are essential parts of the music making process. But have you ever experienced the spacialization power of an analog delay ? The SpaceBug is an analog-like delay featuring an additional LFO with variable speed and depth parameters as well as regeneration capabilities. With the SpaceBug, you will master space and time with only five knobs: space and time to set the delay, speed and depth for LFO modulations, and regen to regenerate the sound. SpaceBugs are great for live applications with their small size, their easy-to-use interface and their powerful unique sounds. With their analog warmth and modulation capabilities, SpaceBugs cannot be compared to other delays. It's more than that, it's a SpaceBug.

Note that SpaceBugs are not produced anymore!!!

Cwejman RG-6 "Bit Crush” Patch

Published on Sep 26, 2014 bigcitymusic

"*Dave Smith Instruments DSM01 Curtis Filter is set to self oscillator. The resulting sine wave is routed into the EXT SIGNAL input of the Cwejman RG-6.
*The RG-6 Clock is set to audio rate. Signal Sample level controls
the amount of the external signal to be sampled by the RG-6. Monitor the signal out from either the low, medium or high probability spread of the RG-6.
*Decreasing the rate of the RG-6 clock begins producing a
“bit crushing” effect on the external signal. Notice the higher
frequencies begin to deteriorate first.
*Experiment with the Slew and Clock Rate CV parameters for further color and dynamics."

Self Generative Modular

Self Generative Modular #2 from Kial on Vimeo.

"Late night, self-generative patch with some wiggling thrown in for good measure. Here, an LFO from the RS-80 is being quantized by the Disting, while also controlling some other parameters, like the Fold amount. An LFO from the EON is being used to control the RS-80s rate, there is a lot of feedback between the CVs on each module. Therefore, changing the rate of 1 LFO has a large effect on the system."

Self Generative Modular from Kial on Vimeo.

"Finally got some white noise in my Eurorack system, thanks to Qu-Bit's EON, and was able to make my first self generative patch.

This patch utilizes the white noise mode on Qu-Bit's EON, white noise is sent to ES Disting in 'Quantize' mode. Quantization is being gated by Animodule's TikTok (which also sends a slower pulse to the VCA you hear opening) The Disting out 'A' is sent to Dixie's 1v/oct in. Dixie's sine out--->uFold In. With EON random trigger being sent to Fold CV. uFold--->uVCA--->uJack--->Digitech's Polara--->MOTU 896HD.

The pulse you hear at the end is the 'zig-zag' out of the Dixie--->DSM01 Curtis Filter (filter CV modulated by Tiptop Audio Z4000)--->uVCA--->uJack"
