MJ’s “Thriller” Monster Growl Bass | Synth Breakdown
video upload by Anthony Marinelli
"Join me for a detailed breakdown of how to create the Monster Growl Bass from Michael Jackson's iconic song "Thriller". I programmed this big "phat" swooping bass sound on a Minimoog Model D synthesizer while in the room with Michael, album producer Quincy Jones, songwriter Rod Temperton and keyboard player Greg Phillinganes. We'll get into all the settings that you'll need to know whether you have a hardware synth or plug-in. Also, the techniques I discuss about creating sounds can be applied to any style of music.
This sound occurs only one time in the song (at the end of the bridge) but serves as an important example about thinking dramatically when arranging and orchestrating. Rod Temperton employed this mind set when orchestrating and arranging throughout the Thriller album. Every sound serves a specific function that's related to the sound(s) before it and that's related to the listeners emotions. This is key lesson I learned working with Quincy and Rod. In this case the Monster Growl Bass is a one-time featured sound that kicks off the ever elevating and evolving 2nd half of the song."

via The Bob Moog Foundation
"The Bob Moog Foundation is excited to announce the recent addition of a rare Moog muSonics Minimoog Model D synthesizer to our collection.
Donated on behalf of the late Philip A. DiTullio, the synthesizer is a physical representation of the transition from R.A. Moog Inc to muSonics in 1971. On the front of the instrument, the synthesizer has the muSonics logo, while the back mentions it was built in Trumansburg, New York, meaning this specific Minimoog was likely built by R.A. Moog Inc, but later sold by muSonics following the change in ownership, and relocation of the company to Buffalo, NY.
Originally owned by producer Charles Stepney, who famously worked with artists like Earth, Wind & Fire, Ramsey Lewis, The Emotions, and Deniece Williams, this Minimoog was later acquired by DiTullio. As an avid lover of music, DiTullio would go on to found the Schillinger Society, an organization focused on preserving and promoting the work of Joseph Schillinger, a composer and music theorist who collaborated with Léon Theremin and created the Schillinger System of Musical Composition.
The Bob Moog Foundation is incredibly grateful for this unique donation, which will help convey the intricacies of the Moog legacy to the tens of thousands of people who visit the Moogseum.
If you have any items that you would like to donate to the Bob Moog Foundation Archives, please contact us. You can also find out more about our vast and growing archive here.
Visit the Moogseum soon for a chance to see this rare and historic Minimoog Model D."

Note the reflections on the wood.
"Up for your consideration is this nearly 50 year old, un-modded, and fully-refreshed, May 1974 Minimoog Model D.
This Model D sounds proper wicked with no trace of 'quirks' or issues; From the centered pitch wheel to the CV input and S-trig inputs working as expected. This particular unit works and sounds incredible. The control knobs and switches work without noise or issues. The keybed is properly firm, with a nice greazy-give and smoothness; 'A great action.' as described by an experienced gigging keyboardist who visited me last week.
The original internal-boards are labeled with matching serial #s that match chassis.
During the freshening this half-century-old Model D it was fitted with a new power cable, a new power lamp, all new key bushings, key alignment, and all new electrolytic capacitors thru-out. Freshening also included finely detailed cleaning of all switches and and rotory switches, disassembly and cleaning the pots, and the keybed was rebuilt. The cabinet was refreshed but with deliberate attention to retaining scars, nicks, and bumps left from the original Twin Cities session-musican owner. Lastly the unit was completely calibrated to specifications @ 72F and has been played several times a week over the past month."

Yamaha CS-30 analog synthesizer SN 2465

"Original vintage Yamaha CS-30 mega analog synth in gorgeous condition, complete with factory case! The 30 was Yama’s ultimate analog monster mono, a true behemoth, with a mind boggling expanse of knobs, faders, and buttons. A labyrinthian landscape of independently routable, endlessly tweakable controls; more like a UFO cockpit, or some knob-barnacled abysmal Leviathan than the familiar Moog, minimoog, or arp odyssey of the era!
Each OSC, LFO, ADSR, filter, even the sequencer, is routable in maniacal ways, very much like an internally normalled Modular synth, with variable controls for all sorts of wacky shit, even the glissando, and pitch bend. Deep. Deep. Deep.
Of course it does all of the classic Moog-ish basses, leads, and effects, but there’s so much power under the hood, it’s easy to get to another universe pretty quickly. I’d recommend consulting your local bud-tender for a strain that will compliment the experience.
This is a rare, original 100v non-export model. I’m happy to include a USA step-down transformer on request. Enjoy!"

Moog Minimoog Model D | First pass experimental ambient sound design
video upload by MIDERA
"I've wanted a Minimoog for some time, but it was 'always out of my price range' (and it still is - 0% financing for the win?). When the new version was released at $5000, I laughed and said, well, that's not going to happen. After the mass layoffs at Moog - I guess I was somewhat compelled to get one. I'm sure this is, by itself, a fairly irrational reason to get it. At the time, I didn't know (or maybe it's still not 100% certain) whether Moog would make more Minimoogs in the US. Originally the thought/fear was that everything would be produced elsewhere. So yes, that played probably an unhealthy role in my decision making process. I've heard the Mini would still be made in the US. I guess I'm not entirely proud to say that maybe by buying it under InMusic, I wasn't doing Moog any favors. I honestly don't know.
If you remember when I got my Sequential Prophet 10, I remember being let down. I wasn't sure it was as good as I thought it should be for the price. While I have come around, it was a major fear I had after buying the Minimoog. I'm quite happy to report that these misgivings were not in my head at all when I first turned on the Mini. Of course, there are some things that confused me. First, I didn't hear any sounds and that made me nervous (turns out my mixer wasn't on). It does take a little reading in the manual to know what switches and knobs are doing exactly what. It's less immediate than one would think on first glance.
It's hard to know what to say. I don't really want to fetishize the instrument - but I think that it's a bit impossible. It's a cool synth. It's one of the most iconic synths - so in that aspect, I will fail this immediately. But it does LOOK and FEEL very impressive... and elegant. In a way that the Matriarch doesn't. The keybeds seem the same though. Getting to the sound - it's got such a rich sound. I would love to A/B it with my Matriarch (which has other benefits such as paraphonic mode, arp/seq, patching), but I think the pure tone from the Minimoog is better (again, I want to test this).
So what I did here was send the output to the Strymon Volante and then added Eventide Blackhole VST. I didn't prepare anything except the original sound. Honestly, I didn't even know what I was going to play throughout. This is just me fiddling around after playing it for 5 minutes to get my bearings straight.
Before I forget. The first sound you hear is actually just the filter with some noise modulation on it. I later add oscillators.
I hope you enjoy."

It was just fully serviced(tuned and calibrated) by the fine gentleman at Studio Electronics and sounds amazing. This unit will only work on midi channel 1. Other than that, works perfectly. Since it has the original vintage VCO, VCF and VCA boards, it needs about 15 minutes to warm up, after that it stays in tune and tracks great!"
