Minimoog Model D Discontinued

Mike Dean | Three Jewels Published on Jun 28, 2017 Moog Music Inc

Sad to see it go. There is nothing like the original Minimoog Model D except the re-issue Minimoog Model D. This marks the end of the Minimoog line, and the three oscillator Moogs for now. The Minimoog Voyager was discontinued in 2015, and the Minimoog Voyager XL in 2017. I am fortunate enough to own an original 70s Minimoog Model D and a Minimoog Voyager Signature edition. Both are beautiful synths - in sound, playability, and build quality. If you ever wanted a brand new and updated Model D, now might be the time.

via Moog Music:

"Today, we announce that after a whirlwind year back in production, our limited re-issue run of the iconic Minimoog Model D synthesizer is coming to a fast end. To commemorate the close of production of the world’s first portable synthesizer, we invited prolific producer Mike Dean to spend one day creating a new Minimoog Model D track at the Moog Factory in Asheville, NC.

Dean wrote and recorded the new track 'Three Jewels' on the Minimoog build line while Moog production engineers crafted some of the final Model D synthesizers beside him. With the track completed in just five hours, Dean walked out of the Moog factory with its employees at the end of their shift.

"The Final Countdown: Minimoog Model D Production Ending

Today, we announce that after a whirlwind year back in production, our limited re-issue run of the iconic Minimoog Model D synthesizer is coming to a fast end. To commemorate the close of production of the world’s first portable synthesizer, we invited prolific producer Mike Dean to spend one day creating a new Minimoog Model D track in the Moog Factory in Asheville, NC. Dean arrived in the factory last Monday at noon, and wrote and recorded the new track Three Jewels on the build line while Moog production engineers crafted some of the final Model D synthesizers beside him. With the track completed in just five hours, Dean walked out of the Moog factory with its employees at the end of their shift--last year Dean spent a weekend at the Moog factory, crafting Grande Faucon in 48 hours. [see the video here]

The Minimoog Model D was originally introduced in 1970 and built until 1981. Then in May 2016, we resumed building the Minimoog Model D for the first time in 35 years. Orders for the synthesizer quickly outpaced our initial estimates, leading to the addition of a night-shift to meet demand for the iconic instrument. Our parts-inventory for the Minimoog Model D project was originally expected to span multiple years of manufacturing, but is being consumed at a much higher rate than anticipated. Thus, this second historical production run of the Minimoog Model D will reach completion much earlier than intended, and this marks the final opportunity to acquire a new Minimoog Model D.

The Minimoog Model D has been a part of our daily lives here at the Moog Factory for over a year now, and is woven into the fabric of our history. As we draw closer to the end of this limited production run, we reflect on this labor of love as one of the most rewarding and joyful projects we have ever undertaken.
Thank you for sharing in this creation and joining us on this magical journey.

Contact your local authorized Moog dealer or distributor to inquire about purchasing one of the final Minimoog Model D analog synthesizers."

How To Build A New Minimoog Model D Synthesizer

Published on May 26, 2016 Synthtopia

"At Moogfest 2016, Moog reintroduced the classic Minimoog Model D synthesizer.

They also had a 'pop-up factory' onsite at the event. Basically, they moved their production line to Durham for the week and were assembling the new Minimoog's at the festival.

We talked with Moog's TJ Mills, who gave us a tour of their assembly process.

They start from a collection of individual parts and pre-assembled components from suppliers. The circuit boards, for example, are supplied pre-populated, using a variety of new and 'new old stock' parts. And the metal components are supplied reshaped and drilled to Moog's specifications.

In the video, TJ discusses what gets done at each stage of their assembly process, and how they calibrate and test the synthesizer once it is assembled."

I heard a rumor that it might have been shown at the Musikmesse, but there were no images at the time. This looks a bit more legit, unless of course that's just a vintage Model D being refurbished for Moogfest. :)

Update: via the Herald Sun: "A Moog Pop-Up Factory, featuring the interactive Global Synthesizer Project and assembly of Minimoog Model D synthesizers, opens in the Power Plant Gallery of the American Tobacco District."

Note the plural in "assembly of Minimoog Model D synthesizers". These are real and new. Soviet Space Child also noticed the three MINI jacks on back and the lack of an S-Trig jack on the left.

Update2: Another pic in via Soviet Space Child below. This one shows a dedicated LFO knob in the mod wheel section.

Update3: One more image of the parts spread out below and a quick video test of one being played by Gene Stopp.

Update4: Suggested price is $3499

Moog Introduces MINIMOOG MODEL D App for iOS

Published on Mar 26, 2018 Moog Music Inc

"Based on the original analog circuit designs of the world’s first portable keyboard synthesizer, the Minimoog Model D App captures the magic of its hardware namesake, inviting you to explore the fundamental elements of sound by setting, shaping, and modulating each aspect of the sonic phenomena -- or jump straight in and play with over 160 included presets.

Available now on all 64-bit iOS devices for an introductory price of $4.99, the Minimoog Model D App places new realms of creative potential in the palm of your hand.

Download the Minimoog Model D app here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/minim...

Introduced by Moog in 1970, the Minimoog Model D served as the archetype for all electronic keyboards that followed. It gave users the ability to design their own sounds, translating imagination into reality. The Minimoog’s portability, affordability and accessibility made it the go-to instrument for musicians looking to expand beyond the traditional sounds of the time.

Bernie Worrell used the Minimoog Model D to establish Parliament Funkadelic’s futuristic funk sound. Kraftwerk employed the Minimoog Model D on the successful concept album Autobahn, sparking an entirely new genre. Gary Numan replaced his live band’s guitars with Minimoog Model Ds, creating the prototype for industrial music. The classic sound of the Minimoog Model D can be heard on Bob Marley’s Catch A Fire, Michael Jackson’s Thriller and Dr. Dre’s The Chronic.

All sounds in this video, except drums, made with the Minimoog Model D app.

New Minimoog Model D Now In Full Production

via Moog Music

"Today we announce that after more than 30 years, production of the Minimoog Model D synthesizer has resumed. Introduced in 1970, the Minimoog Model D was the first portable synthesizer and served as the archetype for all electonic keyboards that followed. Conceived as a response to the large-scale modular synthesizers of the 1960’s, the Minimoog’s portability, accessibility, and expressiveness made it the go-to instrument for musicians looking to expand beyond the traditional sounds of the time.

[video just posted here with part 1]

Throughout history, the Minimoog Model D has been used by the most forward thinking artists to design the sound of the future. Bernie Worrell used the Minimoog to establish Parliament Funkadelic’s futuristic funk sound. Kraftwerk employed the Minimoog on the pioneering concept album Autobahn, sparking an entirely new genre. Gary Numan replaced his live band’s guitars with Minimoogs, creating the prototype for industrial music. The classic sound of the Minimoog Model D can be heard on Bob Marley’s Catch A Fire, Michael Jackson’s Thriller, Dr. Dre’s The Chronic and many more.

Each Minimoog Model D is lovingly handcrafted at our employee-owned factory in Asheville, NC. This legendary 3-oscillator monophonic instrument is securely housed in a hand-finished aluminum chassis and locally-sourced Appalachian hard-wood enclosure. To realize the unmistakable sound of the world’s first performance synthesizer, we preserve the component placement and through-hole design of the original analog circuit boards, employing military-spec precision resistors and custom-reissued transistors to complete the circuit.

Though no changes have been made to the original sound engine or audio signal path, the Minimoog Model D now includes a series of functional modifications to expand the instrument’s sonic capabilities beyond the factory specifications of a 1970’s production unit. These modifications include a premium Fatar keybed with velocity and after pressure available via top panel CV jacks, a dedicated analog LFO with triangle and square waveshapes, CV outputs for pitch, gate, velocity and after pressure, basic MIDI integration, and a mixer overload modification, which when engaged, allows the Minimoog Model D to conjure thicker and far more overdriven sounds than before.

The Minimoog Model D is now available for order through authorized Moog dealers world-wide.

*NOTE: Due to the complexity of the build process coupled with the demand for other Moog instruments, we are only able to produce a small number of Minimoog Model D units per month."

Moog Minimoog Model D Back In Production

video upload by Moog Music Inc

Update: Factory build video added further below.

"In collaboration with Moog Music, the Will Gregory Moog Ensemble presents “Archimedes Screw,” a live performance from 11 musicians—with each of the 10 keyboardists using their own Model D to add layers of sound to the composition as it builds.

From the onset of the video, the stage is set: a mix of vintage and modern Minimoogs line the chancel of The Mount Without, a historic chapel in Bristol, UK. The acoustics of the space provide a warm depth to the sound of Minimoogs produced from every era they have been manufactured.

Utilizing MIDI integration for the 2016 and 2022 reissues, and MIDI-to-CV converters for the vintage units involved in this performance, the Moog Ensemble highlights the modern features alongside the classic sound. According to the group’s musical director and composer, Will Gregory, the instrument’s enhancements expand Model D’s realm of sonic possibility.
'The MIDI aspect of these instruments enables us to open polyrhythmic possibilities between the 10 parts that would be beyond humans to reproduce otherwise. Our hands become free for sound sculpting as we perform by manipulating the filter, resonance, modulation, and envelope controls in pairs. Both these aspects are very important to how I see the Moog Ensemble breaking new ground in live performance and simultaneously giving a more expressive and warm creation.'

'Archimedes Screw' demonstrates Model D’s timeless sound, playability, and relevance as a powerful musical tool for live performance. The Moog Ensemble manifesto, Gregory shares, is very much about live performance as a living breathing unit of musicians listening and responding together.

Will Gregory discusses his connection with the instrument and shares more details on how the ensemble composed this piece from a technical perspective on Moog’s website (moogmusic.com).

Goldfrapp’s Will Gregory is one of the UK’s leading advocates of using synthesizers and electronic instruments to create new sounds and reinvent old ones. Leading and performing with the Moog Ensemble since 2005, Gregory and its rotating contributors—which includes Adrian Utley of Portishead—perform a mixture of specially composed music, transcriptions of classical works, and their own versions of music from popular culture and film scores. “Archimedes Screw” will be featured on the debut Will Gregory Moog Ensemble album coming out via Mute Records in 2023.

"Here it is the audio everyone has been requesting! Listen to the noodling (albeit lame) on the new 2016 Minimoog Model D Reissue at the Moogfest Moog Music Pop-up Factory.

Impromptu performance - I only had a few minutes to get the audio. Also, a friend helped with the video because I did not have a tripod for a steady closeup. Please note that the sound is highly compressed on YouTube and sounds much better at the source.

Audio: Zoom H4n (wav), re-encoded to mp3
Video: Nikon D750
Mixed with Avidemux 2.6.7

Behringer D vs MiniMoog Model D Reissue - Synth Shootout (& the Roland SE-02)

Published on Feb 19, 2018 Marshal Arnold

Do they sound the same??! - MiniMoog Model D - VS - Roland SE-02 video below.

"After finally receiving the Behringer D or Model D that was preordered way way back in June 2017 it finally arrived yesterday! To kick things off I wanted to do a Synth Shootout vs the real deal, a Moog MiniMoog Model D Reissue! I have pulled out the MiniMoog's user manual and configured a few patches on both synthesizers and played some tunes. Please forgive me, I'm not the greatest live synth player, but I thought this might be cool to line these synths up so to speak let folks hear what it sounds live vs the real thing.

For those who don't know what all of the fuss is about, the MiniMoog Model D is one of the most famous synthesizers of all time, it's quite expensive. Recently Moog Music reissued this iconic synth after many years of being out of production for a cost of around $3,500.00 USD. All good right? That had my attention and I was able to pick one up, but then about a year or so ago Uli Behringer made several posts referring to a possible Behringer version of the MiniMoog. Then came some pix of what one might look like and it about broke the internet when the Behringer D might cost around $300.00 USD! That's around 1/10th the cost of the new reissue from Moog. So yeah there was some interest in this thing.

Personally I think for the price the Behringer D does a pretty good job, but please realize that with synthesizers like this you can spend hours dialing in these patches, which I did :) but given more time it may be possible to get these to sound even closer than they do in this video."

Do they sound the same??! - MiniMoog Model D - VS - Roland SE-02

Published on Sep 20, 2017 Marshal Arnold

"Tonight I do a quick comparison with the 1st bank of oscillators on the Moog MiniMoog Model D and the new Roland SE-02. Both synths are 3 Oscillator mono synths. For this shootout I will be going though Triangle, Shark tooth, Saw, Square, Pulse 1 and Pulse 2 on both synths. There is an A|B comparison of the waveforms and then a quick check of the filters while using the Shark tooth.

Let me know what you think.. do they sound the same? which do you prefer?

Thanks for watching!"

Minimoog Model D Old vs New

Published on Mar 19, 2017 AudioCentralMagazine

Playlist:

Minimoog Model D old vs new - Part 1
"The first part of a direct - and probably useless - comparison between our beaten and worn Model D SN 1845E from the Seventies and a brand new Model D SN 007 2016. In this part: tuning and beating... How to reach nearly zero beating on the old machine, how to reach slow beating on the new machine. As usual, tweaking with parameters, you'll obtain same result. As usual, two analog machines will NEVER play exactly the same; small differences as in the real life."

Moog Minimoog D old vs new - Part 2
"In this video, a direct comparison between old and new Model D. Filter Sweep slow with and without resonance, manually opened and under envelope control. Some waveform switching for square waves."

Minimoog Model D old vs new - Part 3
"Part 3 of comparison between old and new Model D. Some patch programming with matching (and not-so-matching) of parameters. As usual, in analog machines, physical position of front panel controls doesn't means nothing - it all depends on internal trimming points."

Moog Minimoog Model D old vs new Part 4
"On this video, Grp R24 Step Sequencer is driving Model D vintage (row B) and Model D 2016 (row A) with same sequence of notes (yep!). Row C drives both cutoff frequencies on synthesizers. Some Ratcheting 2x on some steps."

Does the Behringer Model D Stack Up Against the Original?

Behringer D - Let's Talk Synths - With Mr CowFood

Published on Mar 3, 2018 Marshal Arnold

Discussion starts at 6:29, below is a comparison.

"Behringer D - Let's Talk Synths - With Mr CowFood

Now that the Behringer D is available and I have had a chance to play around with it I wanted to invite back Mr CowFood to discuss this new release from Behringer. The Behringer D, or "Boog" as it's being referred to by many online is a clone of the famous Moog MiniMoog Model D. Mr CowFood and I chat about some of the differences between this clone and the MiniMoog Reissue of which the Boog is based on. There was some discussion also about the High-Pass Filter, apparently there have been some complaints about it so I setup a quick test and all is well with the unit I own. We also chat briefly about the teaser photo from the Midas Team in the UK, possibly getting ready t teardown a Roland Jupiter 8."

Behringer D Vs MiniMoog Model D - THE REMATCH - Technical Video

Published on Mar 4, 2018

You can find the previous video mentioned along with a Roland SE-02 vs. Minimoog comparison here.

"Behringer D Vs MiniMoog Model D - THE REMATCH - Technical Video

Following the first “Shootout” video I made between a MiniMoog Model D and a Behringer D or “Boog” as it's being called online I have taken some feedback from the community and with the suggestions made I have spent an entire evening doing a much more technical comparison of these synthesizers. NOTE this video will probably be very boring for some viewers, my apologies, I do not know how to spice up a video like this, but if you are curious how these 2 synths stack up on a deeper level and have about an hour to burn then give it a spin! In this video I will be covering the following

1- Comparing individual oscillator wave forms one by one (1, 2 and 3).
2- Comparing oscillators with stacked wave forms
3- Some low-pass filter sweeps with varying amounts of resonance
4- Tested the Overdrive circuit
5- Tested the high-pass filer on the Behringer D – (is not a feature on the MiniMoog, but I had questions about it)"

001:model D - a MIDI controller for Minimoog Model D VSTs Seeking Funding on Kickstarter

via Kickstarter

001:model D by ΔMIDI is a dedicated, physical MIDI controller for the world’s most popular synthesizer – Moog Minimoog Model D’s VST plugins.

001:model D allows you to take full control over any Minimoog-based VST available on the market. And thanks to being open-source, anyone can freely modify or tweak its behaviour. This makes the 001:model D a truly universal MIDI controller.

Why dedicated controller is better than knobs built into a MIDI keyboard?

Due to the fact that every knob and every switch is an accurate representation of what is happening on the screen, the exact representation of what sound synthesizer you are operating produces. After spending a while with the 001:model D, you won’t just be able to use ordinary knobs, you will discover a different level of control. It’s all because of that 1:1 layout.

Controls

21 analogue potentiometers
6 6-stage knobs
15 toggle switches
2 lever switches
3 LED indicators
44 physical controls in total.

Sync button for instant settings transfer.

Map button for changing MIDI mapping on the fly.

Class-compliant MIDI-USB protocol implementation
Open-source hardware†
Eurorack-compatible design‡
Black and white finish, gold lettering with matched knob and USB cable color‡
Hackable, based on Arduino® platform
Mechanical

Made from three layers of fibreglass reinforced laminate with an additional layer of sheet aluminium. All CNC-machined.
Dimensions: 425 mm x 110 mm x 48 mm (16.75″ x 4.3″ x 1.9″)
Weight: 1100 g (2.4 lbs).
†001:model D will become fully open-source after Kickstarter Campaign

‡Eurorack model and colour options availability depends on Stretch Goal completion

But hey, there’s more!

After completing the main goal - collecting funds to start the 001:model D production, we have Stretch Goals – for making a white 001:model D, also with gold plated lettering; and something really special - a Eurorack compatible model.

Tested & compatible with

“To celebrate the 40th anniversary of a ground-breaking product like the Minimoog Model D, we knew we had to design something special” said Mike Adams, President of Moog Music. “The XL draws from the Model D and the entire history of our company to create an outstanding new instrument tailored for production, performance and sound design.”

Incorporating virtually all of the sound resources and functions of the original Minimoog Model D and Voyager, The Minimoog Voyager XL features extensive front-panel patchability that harkens back to the original ground-breaking Moog modular synthesizers. A host of features previously found only on massive modular synthesizers combined with state-of-the-art analog technology make it a sound design and control dream machine. Highlights include:

61-Note Velocity Sensitive Keyboard with After-Pressure
Ribbon Controller with Pitch and Gate CV Outputs
Touch Surface Controller with X, Y, A and Gate Outputs
External Audio Input
Effects Loop Insert
2 Active Attenuators
4-Input CV Mixer
Lag Processor
Additional MIDI-Syncable LFO
3 Four-Way Mults
20 Control Voltage Outputs
3 Gate Outputs
10 Control Voltage Inputs
4 Gate Inputs
2 Modulation Busses

Priced at $4995, the Minimoog Voyager XL will ship in the 4th quarter of 2010.

1. New Minimoog D - Brass Patch Solo - Complete Session
2. New Minimoog D - Brass Patch Solo #2 with Rhodes, Telemark and Erebus
"Published on Jan 11, 2017
This is complete session video of my dawless improvisation on the new Minimoog Model D. I started with sort of brass patch with filter modulation and filter tweaking and little bit more of glide, but it develops and changes to not so brassy lead throughout the video. Sequences on the background are Erebus by Dreadbox and Telemark-K as well as DSI Polyevolver.

"Being perhaps the most popular version of one of the most iconic monophonic analog synth series of all time is no easy feat, but the Moog MiniMoog Model D manages to pull it off. As one of the first non-modular synthesizers, the MiniMoog Model D is highly intuitive and requires very little knowledge to use. The model D boasts contouring circuits and three separate, completely original oscillators, one of which can be used as an LFO. Although the Model D was reissued, the '70s MiniMoog Model D hasn't depreciated in value, desirability, or style.

I have tested this out at home and all keys, oscillators, knobs etc are in working order, and do sound great. The serial number is 4101. I am not a certified technician however and am not comfortable opening the case up or evaluating the circuitry. This is an as-is sale as I am also uncomfortable with risking any shipping damage. Please review my previous sales and feedback; all are perfect.

Appears to be an original case, or possibly a custom that was made in the 1970's The synth fits like a glove inside of it, and could benefit from new foam on the inside. top as shown. I would be happy to set up a video conference with you to demo any parameters and answer any other questions. Cheers!"

This mini belongs to a local musician and am going to surprise him with his mini that he has had for many years, He was thinking about selling it because it needed lots of work but I have a feeling that he will be holding on to this one once he gets it back."
