And the press release:

"Free Updates Add an ACB Model of the Classic CR-78 CompuRhythm Drum Machine and a New TR-808 Chromatic Bass Instrument

Los Angeles, CA, Sept. 12, 2023 — Roland announces significant system updates for the popular TR-8S and TR-6S Rhythm Performer products. Available as free downloads, TR-8S Version 3.0 and TR-6S Version 2.0 feature an authentic ACB model of the CR-78 CompuRhythm—an influential Roland rhythm machine from the late 1970s—plus a new TR-808 Chromatic Bass instrument for creating basslines. The companion TR-EDITOR app has also been updated with a compact UI option for more efficient operation on smaller displays.

The TR-8S and TR-6S carry on the long-running legacy of Roland rhythm machines, bringing legendary sounds together with the latest technologies and a host of fresh performance tools for today’s musicians, producers, and DJs. These powerful instruments feature authentic models of important TR products from the company’s history, including the TR-808, TR-909, TR-707, TR-727, and TR-606. With the addition of the CR-78 CompuRhythm, the TR-8S and TR-6S now offer the most complete collection of classic Roland rhythm machines available in hardware form.

TR drum machines have driven music culture for decades, forming the backbone of hip-hop, pop, and electronic styles and defining the sound of multiple genres and subgenres. Introduced in 1978, the CR-78 was a direct predecessor of the TR-808 and the first mass-produced programmable rhythm machine. Its distinctive sound has left its own indelible footprint on pop classics from the 1980s and beyond, and it remains highly sought-after in the vintage marketplace.

Brought to life with Roland’s ACB (Analog Circuit Behavior) technology, the CR-78 model offers every sound and nearly all preset patterns from the original analog hardware. It also includes new patterns and advanced sound design capabilities made possible with the modern ACB approach.

Along with the CR-78, the TR-8S and TR-6S updates add a newly developed TR-808 Chromatic Bass instrument. The sound of the TR-808 bass drum revolutionized popular music with its deep, rich sub-bass and punchy quality. Clever producers began using samples of this revered instrument to play the sound chromatically, creating a new hybrid voice that fills the role of both kick drum and bass. The TR-808 Chromatic Bass instrument puts this ability at the user’s fingertips, allowing them to create tuned basslines with the versatile TR-808 bass drum in the TR-8S and TR-6S.

The free TR-EDITOR for macOS and Windows significantly enhances the workflow of the TR-8S and TR-6S, providing an easy-to-use graphical interface with expanded visual controls and organizational tools. The latest version includes a compact UI option that frees up screen space for using the editor along with other applications on small computer displays.

Availability & Pricing

The Roland TR-8S and TR-6S are available now for $749.99 and $399.99, respectively, in the U.S. The Roland TR-8S, TR-6S, and TR-EDITOR updates are available now for free."

ROLAND TR-8S Demos

Published on Mar 17, 2018 Sunshine Jones

Playlist:

1. ROLAND TR-8S BASIC KIT DEMOS
/////////////////////////////////////////////////
First let me say that there is a lot going on under the hood here on the Roland AIRA TR-8S. There are many kits, and many ways to include sounds, add effects, samples and more.

My general approach is to answer my most fundamental questions - how does it sound, how does it work, can I make use of it, and does it delight me? - before I dig down too deep.
This is a set of clips featuring the most basic kits and effects to let you see and hear what the @rolandaira TR-8S sounds like fundamentally.

1. TR-909
2. TR-808
3. TR-707
4. TR-727
5. TR-606

There is also a TR-626 kit which is great 80's fun, and many more sounds.

Next I'm going to explore adding my own samples and try to apply a sample loop as well.

2. Roland TR-8S Sampling Experiments
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Late into the night last night I explored the idea of importing my own collection of samples into the Roland AIRA TR-8S. Much of the exploration was in headphones and I couldn't wait for the sun to come up so I could listen and document the experiments for us to dig together.

1. A loop of my darling Geraldine Hunt with a -12db filter, accompanied by internal 909 sounds.

2. 100% Roger Linn samples taken by me from my old Linn Drum, sequenced and tuned to make your Camero go faster and match your tri-level nylon jacked.

3. The SP-1200 Congas translated from floppy to WAV files, and loaded into the TR-8S with reverb and a kick added.

I still have some functional questions (like how to assign things like kick attack to the CTRL knob, can one step edit the motion recordings, and other basic stuff...) as well as a real desire for some kind of time/pitch compression and expansion.

Perhaps that could be solved with using slices of a loop, or perhaps the inclusion of a particular file format with beat markers - I don't know - but tempo based samples will not automatically sync. They must be either worked out to a tempo ahead of time, or pitched to be in sync on the TR-8S. However you work it out, one is then working at a fixed tempo (provided pitch is essential) and that can be tricky live. In any given performance I may play at 110 if the audience is forward thinking and with me, but in more ordinary and adverse circumstances I will be forced to play the same material at 122-125 depending on how hostile they are. That's a huge leap in tempo, and getting that perfect on the fly can be tough.

But I'm undaunted, deeply inspired, and I'm going to dig in deeper still and answer my questions and come up with workarounds.

It's only been about a day, but I already just LOVE this thing and can barely remember not having it around.

3. ROLAND TR-8S LOOP SYNCOPATION EXAMPLES
ROLAND TR-8S LOOP SYNCOPATION EXAMPLES
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
I talked about the fact that the Roland AIRA TR-8S doesn't have any time compression/expansion for loops, and here are three examples of ways to work with time based loops:

1. PITCH
The whole loop is imported into one instrument and pitch is adjusted to accommodate timing between 105 bpm and 125 bpm
This technique works great as the old school use of loops. Sometimes a loop gets really interesting when you slow it way down, or speed it way up. But for pitch crucial loops this isn't practical at all. For example in a live performance if you really must play faster or slower, this means your looped material will end up being pitched higher or lower, and if it's meant to play with other instruments the whole composition will be out of whack and potentially sound a tonal, or just wrong (or wonderful!)

2. FOUR SLICES (the one-and technique)
The same loop is chopped into 4 parts. Every beat is trimmed (import the sample loop 4 times and edit each one) and then placed on 4 instruments and the beats are programmed in sequence across the grid.
This allows for tempo adjustment between 125 bpm and 117 bpm without adjusting the pitch.

NOTE: It sounds better as you go faster, than it does as you go slower, so it would be best to begin with a slower loop than you need, so that as you increase tempo the timing feels better, and it sounds tighter than if you had to slow way down.

3. EIGHT SLICES
The same loop is cut into 8 parts and placed into 8 instruments. The decay of each slice is cut in half, and the tempo may be adjusted between 105 bpm and 140 bpm without adjusting the pitch one bit.
NOTE: There's no reason we have to use a unique kick and snare for this size of slice, so this could be done with fewer slices, and using up fewer instruments.

TIP:
When using a uniform grid solution, you can do some pretty interesting things. For example - chop up 4 different loops at the same grid (8) and then use program changes to switch between kits for crazy, far out glitch beats, or dynamic pattern changes at random. It's pretty sick.

Conclusion:
It seems there are many ways to accomplish timing without feeling that the device truly needs to import ReCycle files, or contain a time compression/expansion feature. But it does take us away from the device, and ask us to think it through before we get to it.

I grabbed this loop for fun and explored it on the device itself, without going back to the computer or another device for additional editing. It all happened right here in the TR-8S with a single loop. Naturally this would have gone faster, and possibly been a better result if I'd done the editing on the computer, but I am really not taking my inspiration from computers anymore, and want to work with the device I'm working with when I'm working with it. So taking the slow road, and doing it "stupid" style is all right with me, and seems to produce worthy results I can get behind.

Hope this helps with your adventures.

And the full Press Release:

Roland Adds Three New Models to the TR Drum Machine Series

The Famous TR Lineup Expands with the TR-6S Rhythm Performer, TR-06 Drumatix, and TR-606 Software Rhythm Composer

Los Angeles, CA, October 1, 2020 — Roland welcomes three new instruments to the famous TR drum machine family. Based on the flagship TR-8S, the TR-6S Rhythm Performer delivers next-generation TR performance in a compact and affordable package. The TR-06 Drumatix is the latest addition to the Roland Boutique series, blending the sounds and workflow of the ‘80s-era TR-606 hardware with modern enhancements. Also based on the TR-606, the TR-606 Software Rhythm Composer expands Roland Cloud’s Legendary series with another renowned TR instrument.

TR drum machines have driven music culture for decades, forming the backbone of hip-hop, pop, and electronic styles and defining the sound of multiple genres and sub genres. Roland continues to honor the historic legacy of the TR series and expand the product family, offering both modern recreations and innovative new instruments that bring fresh creative possibilities to today’s musicians, producers, and DJs.

TR-6S Rhythm Performer

The TR-6S delivers the same speaker-pummeling, window-rattling, body-moving sound of its bigger sibling. It features a six-track sequencer and the most iconic rhythm sounds in music history—all in a battery-powered box that fits just about anywhere. Authentic recreations of legendary Roland drum machines like the 808, 909, 707, 606, and more are included, and users can mix and match them with preset and custom samples and futuristic FM tones to create exotic hybrid kits.

The sound of modern music owes a lot to the classic step sequencer—and the “TR-REC” variety found in early Roland drum machines in particular. The TR-6S employs the same tried-and-true approach, elevated with real-time recording and modern enhancements. And with an array of expressive effects, users can take their rhythm tracks to new levels. The TR-6S is a high-quality USB audio/MIDI interface too, perfect for mobile or minimal production setups.

TR-06 Drumatix

The TR-06 is a detailed replica of the Roland TR-606 Drumatix from the 1980s—with some major modern upgrades. This new Roland Boutique version captures the distinctive tone and iconic look of the original while reimagining it with bold new sound-crafting potential. Users can control tuning, decay, and pan for each instrument, or crank up the internal gain for each circuit model and push it into warm overdrive or aggressive distortion. An onboard compressor adds fullness and punch, while the tempo delay creates depth and space.

Like the original, the TR-06 has a familiar and straightforward step sequencer. But now it’s been updated with advanced features like sub-steps for ratcheted parts, step-loop for instant pattern slicing, and more. With five trigger outputs and a trigger input, the TR-06 integrates nicely with modular setups. It's a high-quality USB audio interface too, and features battery operation and a built-in speaker for production on the go.

TR-606 Software Rhythm Composer

With the TR-606 Software Rhythm Composer, the underground ‘80s classic is now available as a plug-in for DAW music production. The software version has the same sound and behavior of the original, plus powerful new features that virtually modify the circuitry for more sound choices and faster, more fluid programming.

Like the TR-06 hardware, the TR-606 plug-in offers tuning, decay, and pan on each instrument and the ability to overdrive the internal circuitry. The step sequencer has been expanded with lanes for each sound, and each pattern has eight variations plus adjustable flams, sub-steps, and soft hits.

Users can pair the TR-8S or TR-06 with the TR-606 and enjoy the benefits of easy hardware and software integration. Patterns can be shared between the TR-8S and TR-606, and the TR-06's knobs are pre-mapped to the plug-in for intuitive, hands-on workflow.

The TR-606 Software Rhythm Composer, along with all instruments in the Legendary series, is included with the Ultimate membership level of Roland Cloud. All paid levels—including Core and Pro—start with a free 30-day trial of Ultimate. In addition, any Roland Account holder can purchase Lifetime Keys for individual Legendary series titles.

Availability & Pricing

The TR-6S will be available for $399.99 in November 2020 and the TR-06 will be available for $399.99 in late October 2020.

The TR-606 Software Rhythm Composer is available now via Roland Cloud.

Roland TR8S Timing Issues Moving 5 Or More Faders at Once?

PROBLÈMES D'AMOUR Well, not everything is immediately perfect. Great love and solid partnerships require dialog and compromise and devotion. Hard to come by these days, but let's talk about the down side of the TR-8S firmware 1.02 1. CONTROLLER LIMITATION Moving 5 or more faders at once will produce a timing stumble. Here I demonstrate that this is not the case with 1, 2, 3 or 4 rugged fader moves at once, but when we get to 5 at the same time it stumbles and can't do it. I don't know if this is a firmware issue or a limitation of the CPU, but I've really got my toes crossed for a firmware fix for this. 2. AUXILIARY TRIGGER WEIRDNESS In the second clip of this set I demonstrate that the dedicated trigger out works perfectly. No problems. In the last clip I have assigned outputs 1-4 to be triggers, and then assigned tracks 2-5 to operate as triggers (output set to aux 1-4) Theoretically then, whatever is programmed on track 2 should come out as a pattern of triggers from output 1. As you can see this is inconsistent and unreliable. Again, I don't know if this is firmware or hardware, but I have my toes crossed that this is something that a firmware update will set straight. The trigger out works great, but there's something still not quite right about the triggers which come out of the assignable outputs. Could be the length of the trigger. Or possibly the voltage. I haven't measured the output so I don't know. I've communicated with Roland about this, and while I doubt they'll take me up on my offer to help, I am positive their engineers are capable and will solve these hassles fast. I'm posting this to be a part of of the general dialog about pluses and minuses and issues as well as excitement around the TR-8S. It's a really lovely machine and I've got faith that these details will soon be sorted. #Roland #TR8S #rolandaira #problemesdamour

The Roland TR-8S allows the user to mix multiple patterns, rhythms and effects to create a compelling drum/sample/synth-based live performance on the fly.

This Roland TR-8S drum machine overview and demo was filmed at the Vancouver Roland Inspiration Center in Surrey BC, Canada as part of the Metro Synthesizers Vancouver synth meetup event in November 2018."

Roland Introduces TR-8S v2.5/TR-6S v1.5 Firmware & TR-EDITOR Update

video upload by RolandChannel

"TR-8S v2.5 and TR-6S v1.5 update load your Rhythm Performer with a stack of exciting new features. In this video, Dustin Good demonstrates the ins and outs of the new firmware and TR-EDITOR software updates.

Both TRs add six FM-based drum models—kick, snare, tom, clap, percussion, and cymbal. These models include new editable FM parameters which can be controlled from both the TR hardware and TR-EDITOR software for creating intricate, evolving sounds.

Rhythm tracks get a dose of unpredictability with a fresh sequencer update that adds probability, sub step probability, and master probability. Probability can bring your drum programming to life by setting percentage values to individual steps that dictate the chance of that step playing. The higher the percentage, the more that note will be played.

Quickly assign new sounds to your pattern with random kit and random instrument. Create spontaneous sonic changes in patterns and then easily restore back to the original kit.

Then run sounds through four new MFX options—Tone Fattener, Vinyl Simulator, Pitch Shifter Delay, and Ha-Dou Reverb.

Plus, upgrade the TR-EDITOR software to version 1.5 for deeper control of the new FM, probability editing, and more.

Roland TR-8S Performance with FM Drums only!

Patchwerks Seattle

"In this video resident expert Cedric of Patchwerks shows us just how capable the FM drum's are on the new TR-8S 2.0 firmware. Pay close attention to the CTRL knobs as that is where you will find the sound "morphing" happening during the performance.

From Roland:
Born of the most famous and influential drum machines ever made, the TR-8S combines the best of its Roland heritage with modern production techniques and comprehensive sound design. The result? The most complete drum machine to date—a forward-thinking, performance-tuned instrument unlike any other. Build your dream kit from the most iconic drum sounds of all time, otherworldly FM sounds, and the finest selection of samples from our vast library—or go even further by importing your own custom samples. Tap, tune, and tweak with hands-on controls and production tools that make your patterns move and groove. And why keep this kind of percussive power confined to the studio? The TR-8S was literally made to play live.

Stellar FM Sounds!

The FM sounds in the TR-8S are unlike anything this side of Mars, conjuring silvery drum hits and twisting tails to augment your tracks. The Morph parameter is an ultra-expressive macro control that lets you sweep through an array of sonic variations, wildly manipulating FM depth, ratio, and feedback with simple knob movements.

Roland TR-8S jam session

Published on Mar 5, 2018 cdmtv

"Nick de Friez (Roland) joined CDM's Peter Kirn for this one. We hooked up two new Roland TR-8S drum machines and used them to drive yet more gear - a MakeNoise 0-Coast plus an original Roland SH-101. The TR-8S also acts as an audio interface. Here's some of the madness that resulted. Lesson: it was a good time. We'll have to do more."

Roland TR-808 - Roland Cloud - quick demo

Published on Mar 6, 2018 Alba Ecstasy

"Next day after Roland announced their new Roland TR-8S, the Roland Cloud version of the legendary TR-808 is on my computer! This is just a quick demo, passing through the presets, nothing more."

You might remember the NAMM demo. Roland's cloud version of the TR-808 is now available.

"Features

The Thing That Goes Boom
In 1980, the Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer was released to an unsuspecting and somewhat bewildered public. To many at the time, its tweakable analog tones didn’t exactly deliver “traditional” or "realistic" drum sounds. It wasn’t until after a few adventurous musicians and producers got their hands on the TR-808 and started tweaking those knobs that the world would feel the impact it would leave on music forever. For decades since, the sizzling hi-hats and snappy snare, the clicky rim shot, the unmistakable cowbell, and yes—that booming bass drum—have been heard on worldwide hits and underground classics. Its influence is so deep that it’s been name-dropped in famous tracks, had albums dedicated to it, bands named after it, and is even the subject of a feature-length documentary film.

That 8 Oh 8
The Roland TR-808 is one of the most revered and sought-after electronic musical instruments of all time—and its influence only continues to grow. New musical genres make heavy use of the 808, with some utilizing it as the main instrument and defining sound of the style. The Roland TR-808 is so desirable that original units sell for thousands of dollars on the used market and it's often been imitated with sound-alike sample-packs, less-than-faithful apps, and knock-offs. But the 808 is a complex beast and far more than the sum of its parts. Its iconic user interface and the unique personality created by the sounds responding and interacting with each other are vitally important to conjuring up that authentic TR-808 mojo. And you know it when you hear it.

The Return of The King
Using our proprietary Analog Circuit Behavior technology, we’ve painstakingly recreated the original analog circuits that are the essence of the TR-808’s distinct sound. All the nuance and detail are accounted for resulting in a living, breathing Roland TR-808 for your DAW. This software adaption not only sounds and acts true-to-life, but it injects new and exciting enhancements into the classic 808 formula. Each pattern has eight variations so you can create evolving sequences that keep things interesting. The classic 16-step "TR-REC" sequencer can be expanded to include a sequencer lane for each drum instrument so you can program faster and more fluidly. The sequencer has adjustable flams and sub-steps so you can create detailed fills and ratcheting sequences. And each instrument has its own “last step” and shuffle settings so you can play with timing, experiment with polyrhythms, and dial in just the right groove for your tracks. You can even drag patterns from the TR-808 directly into your DAW as MIDI or audio clips!
