Why J3PO Keeps Coming Back to the Prophet 5/10

video upload by Julian J3PO Pollack

"The Prophet 5 and Prophet 10 (both the reissue and the vintage ones) are iconic synths—but are they still relevant today?

My name is Julian Pollack (AKA J3PO) and In this video, I share my honest thoughts after spending years with the Prophet 10 reissue: what makes it so inspiring, why I can get bored with it,, and why—despite its limitations—I keep coming back to it.

No FX. Very limited modulation. Mono output. No frills. Just that raw, three-dimensional sound that somehow cuts through everything and makes us want to come back for more.

🎛️ Get my Prophet 5/10 presets from my website: https://www.julianpollack.com/shop/p/...

Hikari MONOS: The Ultimate Chaos Synthesizer? [LivePerformance] [NoTalking]

video upload by Andre Bregegere

"This video features an live performance highlighting the Hikari MONOS, a unique synthesizer that generates a wide range of noise textures and rhythmic patterns through combination of a noise generator and an oscillating low-pass filter. The performance was recorded live, and is presented here with minimal edits.

The Monos is accompanied by the Kirscher Microfilter, a MS-20 (resonant low-pass filter) clone, and two devices by Error Instruments, the Control Freak and the Radio Sputnik uvb-76, here both used for CV modulation of the Monos and/or the filter cutoff. The Monos also goes through a mixer with Delay & Reverb send (UAFX Starlight Echo Station & Golden Reverberator).

Finally, the recording was lightly mixed and mastered in Pro Tools. Enjoy!

Additional parts

"Rebuilt of the ultra rare SYNTON SYRINX Dutch keyboard synth.
I cannot compare but the unusual filter setting of
2 bandpass and 1 lowpass VCFs, with 4 different routings
give a lot of modulation freedom and rendition of rather unusual
sounds.

Since I am not a fan of black gear. I tried my best in 2023 and contacted
ANALOG FX. And they had been so kind as to manufacture a
custom blue face synth which I have only seen in some
preproductions units and, of course, in the historic
SYRINX which was available also in red.

For the image angle had to use the wide angle and so only a quite low resolution. So there is not much detail. Sorry for that."

Yamaha DX11 coarse pitch ratios

video upload by Collector Current

"I learned today that the TX81Z / DX11 coarse FM pitch ratios are divided into four sequences. I sat down with a basic bell sound to explore if I can hear a resemblance.

Besides the harmonic ratios 0.5, 1, 2, 3, etc there are 3 other sequences of ratios which are multiples of 1.41 (sqrt(2)), 1.57 (pi/2) and 1.73 (sqrt(3)). Read more at https://blog.jacobvosmaer.nl/0050-fm-...

"The electricity of live manipulation breathes through every sequence as MSTRBLSTR transmutes the raw essence of the TR-606, MC-202, and TB-303 into a sonic incantation. Alchemical is transformation in motion: analog breakbeats pulse with crackling percussion, acid squelches growl and evolve, and rhythms dissolve and reassemble like matter through fire. The bassline becomes the bedrock of energy, conjured live in real time.

MC-202 w/ Tubbutec 2oh2 mod

Mixers: Boss BX-8, Alice 1228, Boss KM-4

FX: Tapco 4400 spring reverb, TC Nova Reverb & Delay, Korg SDD-1000/1200

Compression: BSS DPR-402, DOD SR-866

DAW: Ableton Live

This is the same setup I used on From Deep.

Backstory
I brought my TR-606 to Ramiro at Severed Machines to install a few long-desired mods: switch replacements, a louder BD via resistor change, and Robin Whittle’s Accent Trigger and post-volume individual outs. He left in a few patterns, including a breakbeat variation that really hit me. That inspired the synth parts. Next thing I knew, I was performing and recording the full track.

Recording Notes
I treat mixers as modular routers. For Alchemical, the Alice mixer’s direct outs went straight into my interface, while the Boss BX-8 worked as a submixer for overdrive and tone shaping. I panned certain tracks hard L/R into separate buses, then re-centered them on different mixer channels. I have owned many delays while the Korg units are among my favorites, the TC Nova is often a go-to for synths: it sounds great, has nice filters, tap tempo, and my favorite feature, easily accessible time divisions Protip: a buffered pedal in front helps them sound better. The Nova reverb is also very playable and has a dynamic ducking mode that helps it get out of the way, if that's what I need.

In post, I swapped the TR-606 kick for a TR-808 sample in Ableton - it just gave the track the weight it needed. There’s also a lone TR-808 clap halfway through. Other than that, what you hear is live with only some minor edits and additional processing.

__________________________________________________________________

For TR-606 lovers: I highly recommend Robin Whittle’s mods: https://www.firstpr.com.au/rwi/tr-606/

The Accent Trigger mod alone is worth it - it adds great performance potential. Robin credited the fix to me, but Ramiro deserves most of the credit. Robin's individual outs (post-volume pot) offer superior performance control and gain staging flexibility compared to the more common pre-pot version."

You Really Got Me by The Kinks from the album Kinks (1964)
One of me my fathers favorite music groups.

Featured the Moog Prodigy Synthesizer (1979)

This cover song series contains my own recreations of my favourite songs from the last 50 years. The original music from which I take inspiration belong to their respective owners. I recreate tracks only for personal passion and to pay homage to these tracks.
My intention is not to create covers that sound exactly like the original (if you want to hear identical sounds, please listen the original). It's more of an inspiration with my sounds from the old synthesizers from the past and of course the great appreciation for the original performers and producers."

"This is a Sequential Prophet-VS in excellent working condition, professionally serviced and tested by a former Sequential engineer in Japan.

Cosmetically rated "Good" due to minor touch-up spots visible on the surface.

These areas were professionally treated to prevent rust and ensure long-term durability.

Functionally, the unit performs excellently (except for aftertouch).

✅ Key Features:

LCD backlight replaced – bright and clear, with auto-off after 5 minutes of inactivity. Reactivates on touch.

Factory programs and waveforms fully restored – original Vector synthesis presets are ready to play.

Velocity-sensitive keyboard fully functional.

Aftertouch is currently non-functional due to a failed pressure sensor.

The part could not be sourced during service, so it was left as-is.

All other keyboard functions, including velocity and general playability, are working perfectly.

All sliders, buttons, and the joystick operate smoothly.

No audio issues, tuning is stable and accurate.

Internal memory is backed by a good battery – no patch loss."

Commodore Custom Built Circuit Bent Synth with Cynthcart and Screen

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this eBay listing

"Listing is for a custom built circuit bent commodore synth with cynthcart and screen. This custom build device was made around 2009 and has been used a few times but mostly stored. Honestly forgot I had it. If I recalled I think the purchase price was around 600 from the person who built it.
Some of the knobs are blank for future wiring mods. The ones I checked I listed on with tape. Octave changes, Volume knob, Filter on off switch, Filter cutoff. The cynthcart is the sound module on a card for the commodore sounds and can be played on the darker keys. The device works and was tested before listing however since this is a custom build some functionality may vary. It played sounds and sounds as I remember.
———
Listing is being sold AS IS so if there are any questions please just ask.
———
Functionality for the cynthcart I found is listed below.
———
cynthcart is a cartridge I developed for the Commodore 64 computer that turns it into a standalone analog synthesizer with MIDI support. The Commodore 64's SID is one of the most interesting 8-bit sound chips of all time, and I was unsatisfied with the available SID synthesizer software. Cynthcart supports the original Commodore 64 piano keyboard overlay (shown below), and MIDI interfaces by Datel, Passport, Sequential, and Kerberos. Cynthcart's key-command user interface allows it to be played and controlled without a monitor, making it especially suitable for live performance.
FEATURES:
● 30 preset sound patches
● Arpeggiator, portamento, vibrato, and tremolo effects
● Analog filter control and effects
● Control of attack, release, and other sound parameters
● MIDI support including pitch bend, patch changes, and controllers
● On-screen help
● Color visualizer display
● Mono stack, 3-voice mode, and 6-voice mode (with second SID)
● No latency
● SID hex editor for advanced users
● Ability to turn off video chip to reduce noise
● PAL and NTSC pitch tables with automatic selection
● Copies itself to RAM (cartridge can be removed after booting"

Complex System

video upload by Memetune Studio

"I was wanting a way of setting up an interactive environment to record sounds from some modular systems which could be the basis for some improvised performance based sound explorations

I figured that if I set up some cybersynth patches (ie patches that are evolving by themselves in some way, or are at least dynamically varied over time) and could record some long stereo samples (loops) that could be manipulated live, this might be an interesting thing to do

It occurred to me that the Octatrack, which I got a few years ago and use as a granulating sample mangler, might be perfect to pair with the modulars in this way

The thing about the Octatrack is that it is so unbelievably deep and sophisticated that it can be very difficult to set things up on. I see it as a truly Complex System (AI Overview definition: Complex systems are characterized by numerous interacting parts and emergent behaviors that are not readily predictable from the individual components) and the user manual is utterly hopeless beyond a very basic overview

With the Octatrack you have to basically tell it what you want to do for any given situation. You create a personalised environment inside it and then work within the limitations you set yourself. You have to think of a setup that you want to create, then you build it for yourself using all the different components. In other words, it's not a preset environment that does a few specific things, you have to decide what you want then make it yourself

So I thought it would be useful to have 4 stereo 'Tape Machines' that can be manipulated in real time, with control over the following in each: Pitch, Playback Speed (Timestretch), Direction (forward / reverse) basic Filtering (bandpass) and Delay with feedback. All the things you might find in a Musique Concrete studio in the 1950s (with the addition of granular timetretching)

I might do a more detailed breakdown of the Octatrack patch in the future, but I wanted to live with this setup for a while and make sure it does everything I want it to do in the most efficient way first

This is my first experiment with it, using the Buchla 200. There are two stereo outs from the Buchla - two independent patches running concurrently - going into the Octatrack's dual stereo inputs. These are then fed into the four "tape machines" I created in the Octatrack, which mixes them into one stereo output along with the two live feeds from the Buchla (so what you are hearing is a live mix of the Buchla's 2 voices plus 4 tape loops (30 seconds each) recorded as we go along from the Buchla. As I said, its a complex system 😁"

Buchla 200e Program Switch

video upload by verstaerker

"Initially, a straightforward sequence runs without any preset morphing or remote program changes.

After we heard the sequence a bit I connect the trigger outs of the 252e to the 225e Program Manager. At this point, you’ll hear the two VCOs begin to switch through their stored presets in sync with the trigger pulses — while the rest of the system remains unaffected, as only the VCOs are assigned to respond to remote program changes.

I’ll continue refining this setup with more modules enabled for remote control, and dial in more purpose-fit sounds to push this concept further.

Delay courtesy of the Strymon Volante, adding some extra flavor."
